On the day of the reception, the band set up and everything went smoothly! We asked the band to do some additional scripting at the last minute and Jim did a great job with his "on the fly" cake cutting announcements. Lavonne was at the reception and made sure the night went smoothly. The music was everything we had hoped it would be and we were so happy that Terry took the time to learn a special song just for us. Overall. Surthing made our wedding reception the magical night we had hoped it would be. The music was great, the band and manager were professional and our guests had a wonderful time. Lavonne (the manager) called me 3 or 4 times a day for 2 weeks before the wedding. She could not process the timeline I had created & when I asked a few simple questions (how much would it cost to have them play with no breaks, etc.) each one became so convoluted that I stopped answering her calls & just waited until the end of the day to call her back once. She made it so painful to deal with them & get a plan into place that we ended up giving up some of the playing time that we paid for just because it wasn't worth it to deal with her anymore. She would tell me something was fine & then call me back the next day & tell me no & every time I got on the phone with her it was a 30-minute conversation. Fast-forward to the wedding day. We had agreed that the bandleader, Jim, would MC even though the band wouldn't start playing until after dinner & introductions were at 7:30. I went to talk to him during cocktail hour & he had 1 sheet of the 8-page timeline & said that all he was told to do was the bridal party introductions. The insanity of this blows my mind. I talked to Lavonne about this at least 6 times & she made me write down an exact script for him to do the introductions (which I did). By no means did this mean I didn't want him to introduce the toasts, first dances or cake cutting. You are a BAND LEADER who is MC-ING A WEDDING. I am a wedding planner; my timelines are eight pages long & insanely detailed. Having "Bride & groom cut the cake, 8:05 PM, Song title, & Jim's name" by it isn't enough? You can't handle reading that & saying: "The bride & groom are now going to cut their wedding cake!" I was flabbergasted. Jim on the other hand, wasn't fazed & didn't seem to be bothered by the fact that this was all supposed to start in 30 minutes. Lavonne told me she would be there all night, so I asked Jim where she was; nowhere to be found. I called & left a VM for her & went through all of it with my brother so that I had a back up if Lavonne didn't show up & work this out. At 7:15, I had the bridal party lined up & went to tell Jim we were going to be starting soon. Jim wasn't there. I called Jim, left voicemail. I called Lavonne, another voicemail. Finally at 7:25 she called me & told me Jim was on his way into the building. Seriously? 5 minutes before he's supposed to start announcing he's not in the room? I told her that was ridiculous & my brother was already on the mic. Apparently neither of them could be bothered to show up 5 minutes before it was supposed to start. Dancing began & Lavonne stood around all night taking photos & hovering around the dance floor. A bunch of people asked me who she was because it was weird & awkward. The band: good musicians, but they didn't read the crowd at all. Lavonne said they played straight off of the list that my sister & brother-in-law gave her but part of their job is to read the crowd. We wanted people dancing, when you play a song that clears the dance floor, kill it & do a song that will get people back. That's why we HIRED PROFESSIONALS. They did shameless self-promotion. "We're ShurThing come see us next weekend!" So inappropriate to do at a private event when someone is paying you thousands of dollars and after the 2nd time I went up & told them not to do it again, lo & behold at the end of the night, one more shameless plug. Sigh. The party ended, Lavonne came up & said "I'll need the check now." Lovely. I asked my parents about it & found out that my mom had completely forgotten her checkbook in the chaos of getting to the hair salon that morning. I explained that to Lavonne & asked if I could meet her at 7 AM with the check (we were staying downtown & my parents live on 192nd St.) & we wanted to hang out with our family & not drive 30 minutes out & 30 minutes back that night. I said it was our fault, we forgot it, but let's cut each other a little slack since the MC didn't actually MC at all, we both messed up (I used a different four letter word, which later she claims meant I was swearing AT her.) She was adamant that they weren't leaving until they got the check & she was going to call her lawyer (really?), so we went to get it. She called 3 times to ask where we were. Lavonne, I already explained to you that it was going to take an hour to get there & back & you wanted to wait, so wait. I followed up after the wedding, she was not apologetic at all, didn't see any reason why the MC should be there two minutes before he's supposed to be on mic. announcing the bridal party. It was all my fault, she argued with me the entire time: it was like dealing with a 3rd grader (no offense 3rd graders). If I could give them half of a star I would, b/c I guess you should get half a star for showing up & remembering to bring instruments. They did that. There are better musicians that will not make your event a living hell.

They have you fill out a questionnaire with preferences, scheduling, etc. for your event. Then our DJ, Roger, called me the week-of to talk about what vibe and music I was looking for. This gave me a lot of false hope about how the night would go. The introductions and toasts went fine, but I wasn't expecting any hiccups (very simple stuff). We did provide a meal for him, but he took too long eating because when we wanted to start the video he wasn't ready. The biggest issue was the music he played throughout the evening. I had provided a very extensive list of songs and artists I like so he could really get the feel for the types of music I wanted him to play. We even talked about it beforehand. But he was way off for the whole night...at one point I saw two of my bridesmaids at his booth making a list of songs for him to play because no one was dancing and people weren't liking the music. I was pretty annoyed, because I had specifically taken the time to write out the kind of music I wanted. I asked for specific songs also, and I'm pretty sure I didn't hear ANY of them. I asked for a special announcement to surprise my new husband, and again didn't hear that either. I felt like my bridesmaids did his job. I also feel like I wasted precious pre-wedding time making a whole list of songs and artists to play, which wasn't even used. I have given very few one-star reviews, but the DJ was the one major flaw in an otherwise amazing reception experience.

Bandstand Music Omaha: Adds More Stress to Important Events…read more Bandstand Music was hired to provide the music equipment and DJ for our wedding reception. Prior to the event, our interactions with the group were very positive. Bandstand staff met with us several times, was attentive and intelligent about music, and seemed very capable. The night of the reception however, we were shocked at their lack of professionalism. The DJ showed up to the event almost an hour and a half late. Thinking the reception would have no music, the groom was forced to call Bandstand repeatedly as he was preparing to walk down the aisle. When the DJ did arrive he was in dirty, sweat stained clothing that he explained away puzzlingly by saying he had "just come from the farm." After the ceremony ended, as the family was taking a few moments together to take photos, he kept interrupting to ask the newly married bride and groom questions, interrupting a sweet family moment with small details that should have been asked prior to the wedding day (we had been told we would receive a confirmation phone call from Bandstand prior to the event and never did). We had established a reception order and a playlist beforehand with Bandstand, yet the DJ seemed confused about helping the reception move forward, and actually complicated the process of giving toasts and cutting the cake. Throughout the reception, there were long periods where he would disappear, only to be found later by the event planner in the kitchen having a cigarette or eating leftover wedding food. During one of his absences, some wedding guests tried to change the song themselves, but ended up pressing a wrong button and shutting the music off entirely. Rather than coming in to see what the problem was, the DJ remained gone for several minutes and other wedding guests had to climb into the DJ booth to figure out how to get the music back on, which they did. The DJ from Bandstand was the only real source of anxiety for our family in an otherwise flawless night. It is possible that their other DJs would have been better or more professional, but I would not recommend this group to anyone throwing a wedding because of the chance of hiring one of their inexperienced ones. In hindsight, I wish we would have saved the money, simply rented speakers from a rental company, and had a friend in charge of an ipod.

We had a keyboard that we had asked him to hook a speaker up to and then mic our officiant. On the day of our wedding he was setting up as we were taking pictures and finishing up as guests arrived. He didn't have the right hook ups for our keyboard and then his mic was not working at all. Thank goodness we have an amazing family and they brought a new keyboard and the proper hook ups. Mike explained that he had just got the mic back from being worked on and didn't know why it was breaking static noises every time we used it. It was kind of frustrating having this happen at our reception. Our videographers saved the day and let us barrow one of their extra mics. We found it kind of humorous that he would ask my husband and I what we wanted to drink and then he would never bring us anything back. We were told that our DJ would have back up equipment and if they needed anything they would be there in plenty of time to run back and get whatever they need or someone would bring them their supplies. Mike was a great DJ he really did a nice job putting the music together and keeping everyone on the dance floor. I would say all-in-all he did a very nice job. I would recommend this vendor to a friend but warn them to get certain things in writing.

He knew how important it was to me to make the day special for my husband, who's a huge Husker fan. They have all of the speakers and equipment already set up and it was one less thing for us to worry about. We first spoke with Jesse, who I believe kind of runs the company and went over a list of what we wanted. They have multiple DJs as part of this company and we were paired with Laci. I have to say it was a spectacular experience! She played the songs from the list of guest requests we had gotten when we asked for RSVPs, she was open to day of requests, and really knew how to keep people coming back to the dance floor. She payed enough attention to notice what types of songs kept people entertained and really made everything flow perfectly! She also played a variety (even some polka for my Czech family.) We got a lot of compliments from guests about the DJ and we could not be happier. The wedding party also really enjoyed that she was friendly, helpful, and funny. I would absolutely recommend this company (and especially Laci) for any event!

Then things took a turn. The entertainment didn't show up. When no one arrived after 20 minutes we tracked down the owner to see what was wrong. There was some texting back and forth which resulted in the owner stating there was some miscommunication and that the entertainment would not be coming instead they offered a face painter and a refund. The face painter may have worked for a kids birthday, but this was a birthday party for adults. Adults who had been looking forward to the artist that had been paid for. Fortunately we could offer up more booze and the adults forgot about the mishap. If this had been a kids party it would have been ruinous.
