I had a great time renting through SUP. Pretty easy to find their setup on the beach. I went to the 29th and seawall location and recommend that one since it's near some of the bars and decent restaurants. You can easily hit up Float, the pool bar, before or after your rental/lesson..which also has a shower head. There is a public restroom/ shower along the sidewalk at 29th. If you're hungry, you can easily walk 2 blocks in the pleasure pier direction to Chick-fil-a, or Bubba Gump. I walked the other direction past the Poop Deck to The Spot since I was in the mood for a burger. I decided to just do the regular rental instead of the class since I'm a proficient swimmer, have good balance and used to other types of boards on the water. The female instructor gave me a 2 min lesson about the equipment before going out and I felt as long as you do everything she says, you will be just fine. The best tip she gave was stand up when the board is actually moving through the water after paddling to get some speed, not when you're at a standstill as tempting as it may be. Of course she doesn't tell you about encountering jellyfish or other water hazards except for the rocks, stay away from the rocks! There were patches where the jellyfish were hanging out, just don't fall in those areas! I saw a dolphin swim about 10 feet from my board near the end of the pleasure pier, so that was pretty cool. Yes, you will fall at least once if it's your first time, but it's not a big deal...just get back up on your board, get on your knees for a couple minutes, then start to stand again. One of the most enjoyable parts was paddling under the pleasure pier. The water is more calm under there, and of course shady, but don't go if you don't feel comfortable navigating through the concrete pylons. Incredible price and value for a 1 hr rental. I felt they probably gave me more than 1 hour out on the water since it was my first time, so that was awesome. read more

Our first experience with Stand up paddle board and Marlo got us pointed in the right direction. She is an excellent SUP teacher. We were worried being in the Gulf, but it made for an exciting adventure. We will definitely do it again as they rent boards @ the Galveston Seawall at 29th. Marlo gave my family and me a great rundown about how to safely navigate the gulf coast while paddle boarding. The waves were not dangerous but still fairly strong and we felt confident once we got out there. Great value. I would highly recommend giving this a shot while visit in Galveston. read more

Booked an individual lesson. Booking online (you prepay) was very easy. It was simple to find the location near the Galveston Pleasure Pier. The instructor, Marlo, was very encouraging and gave specific advice. She stayed close by in the water with me the first hour of the lesson, and then critiqued from the shore for the second hour. I improved a lot --from zero experience to standing up and actually surfing!--during this first try. (I am a young adult.) I recommend bringing a water bottle and using plenty of sunscreen. There are showers and restrooms nearby. Lots of fun and a great workout. Small but professionally-run operation. Definitely would recommend. read more

I had never SUP before today. So many options to learn - privates, 4 person group class, or just wing it with Marlo's instructions (which is what I did because it was already late in the day). No experience needed, but must be willing to have fun and just keep paddling! read more

We first saw Marlo/SUP Gulf Coast on Instagram. We sent her a message just to get some info, and she responded quickly and was very helpful! She messaged us updates on weather conditions and we gave her a heads up when we were on our way. When we got there she met us with a mask on and gave us a super helpful mini lesson. She was great about answering questions and checking in on us during our 2 hour rental, she even pointed out some dolphins! Great people and great company! I made reservations online for the beginning SUP class for myself and my younger brother. I have some experience paddle boarding on lakes and rivers but never in the ocean from a beach. My younger brother, only 12 y.o., has never done it before. Our instructor, Marlo, was so kind and patient. She made sure my brother was comfortable and safe, but also made sure he had fun, and he did! He was nervous at first but at the end of the lesson wanted more! She was also very patient and encouraging with me trying to get used to the current and the waves! She also gave us some great recommendations For our next outdoor adventure! I will definitely bring going back to them the next time I'm looking to SUP in Galveston! read more

Made a reservation online after reading great review from past clients. Marlo texted me the day before to let me know of a location change due to conditions in the gulf. Directions to the new location were clear and the spot was quickly identifiable. The boards and paddles were in great condition and Marlo gave us a quick refresher on how to turn etc. My husband and I had both been paddleboarding before with a full lesson elsewhere so a quick refresher was perfect! We paddle boarded after a morning yoga class, and the combo rate for both was a steal! The SUP employees were super helpful and explained how to handle the board very clearly. It was a challenge getting up on the board since it was a strong current that day, but I thoroughly enjoying being out on the water, even if I was on my knees the whole time. My fiancé and I wanted to prep for our honeymoon SUP reservation, so we booked a SUP Gulf Coast Beginner Class. The booking included one hour of instruction on the basics of paddle boarding, including both on-shore and in-water instructions and practice with Marlo. This was DEFINITELY handy and worthwhile - we had virtually no SUP experience and would have been falling the entire time without help. Absolutely worth the extra money to take the Beginner Class. Marlo is so kind and patient - she makes the learning/falling fun and easy. The wind picks up throughout the day, so I was glad we signed up for the 10:00AM class instead of a later class time. After the beginner class portion, you get an additional hour to practice your new skills and go out on your own. No need to stand the whole time, you can also kneel or sit on your board and enjoy the wildlife and sunshine! We will definitely be back! read more

Super convenient and easy to rent a paddle board on the beach vs carrying your own gear. Quick instruction and you're in the water. Definitely a plus for locals or visitors to the island. We rented our boards early in the morning, which provided a cheaper rate. We can paddled about twenty feet from a pod of dolphins! Highly recommend! read more

Did the two hour bit with lesson for the whole family. None had ever been on a paddle board before. The lesson was great and the basics are easy to pickup. So glad we did this on the gulf side and not the bay side. The waves made it a lot more fun. Will definitely be back. read more

Sun, surf, and dolphins.... what more can you ask for? Never had tried SUP before and this was a great experience. SUP Gulf Coast has boards for either rent or instruction that are brand new and in great shape and offer the experience to challenge yourself out in the ocean for a unique experience. Went out on a Friday morning and it was a bit of a challenge at first, but the kind that is rewarding once you get out there.... and then you are at peace with nature as you see Galveston in a little different way than just standing at the seawall wondering why the seagulls are so annoying. Instead you get to wonder why you must be able attract dolphins easier than the opposite sex? I digress, I'm sure its not everyday, but once out past the jetty, Mr Flipper and his kids (is there a name for kiddo dolphins?) joined me out there, to probably laugh at me as I tried to stand up on my paddle board and use my paddle as a fake selfie stick. Only some of that is true... up to you all to find out, but its a great experience, my core mocked me the next day for thinking 5 sit-ups a week is a good workout, but I won in the end because I was out on the ocean, trying something new on a Friday while the proletariat of the world cringed at work while everybody asked what they were doing this weekend. Looking forward to a summer of hitting up SUP Gulf Coast at Porreto Beach, these guys rock! read more
