Rented a damaged kayak from this shop, No lid for the dry box or seats . We got stuck with it and they didn't really care about any of it . The shop is nice and trendy. They shouldn't rent out equipment that is not fully prepared to rent out with lots of missing parts . The entire kayak filled with water and things could have been very dangerous! Came here because jet skis are out of season. The staff is really nice and we rented a paddle board. Prices are reasonable and it's super easy to go right across the street to the beach. Cool vibes, would rent again. They also have a bathroom in the back. read more

Super friendly and HELPFUL staff. I wasn't sure what I needed to get out and enjoy the Galveston waves. I had two kids with me. They helped me rent the perfect boards (we loved them) and we picked up some sunglasses while we were there. Loved the shelling/surfing recommends from the staff who knew the island, and also for the tip to put the aloe in the fridge for when we inevitably arrived home sunburnt. bought a $500 board for my son. The next morning he decided he wanted a one wheel instead for his birthday. The board was still in the wrapper. I brought it back and they wouldn't refund me. He said the board was damaged and they couldn't sell it due to too tiny indentions where we had it roped down on top of the roof rack. The foam was dented in about 1/16" but not the board. He told me even though they couldn't sell it the store my best bet would be Facebook marketplace and I could get full price. lol he wouldn't even take a picture and send it to the owner for her to look at just told her on the phone while he walked away from me that it was severe dents from a strap even though it was a rope that was barely tightened. if you come to this shop, you know that every single one of their boards that they rent out has dents and Chuck's taking out of them. They also sell used boards that are slightly damaged. I asked if they could give me something for the board, even if it was heavily discounted and they said no. Customer Service goes a long way definitely won't be coming back. read more

Love this place! Close enough to the beach that you can make sure it's not flat before you go renting something. They are always very nice and helpful, no pretentiousness here. We've rented longboards and SUPs, both were perfect for what we needed. Lightweight foam for beginners! They will let you know where the best places are to take your rental and have fun that day. read more

I was born and raised in Huntington Beach (until age 20), was in the HBHS surf program, worked at Huntington Surf and Sport for a couple years after high school, know several people in the surf industry, have a few friends who are former pro surfers, and spent another 23 years living and surfing regularly at spots throughout Southern California (Salt Creek, Trestles, Swamis) before a job relocation landed me in Southern Texas; I live in Pearland and work in Houston. ALL THIS TO SAY THAT SOUTHERN SPEARS IS THE REAL THING WHEN IT COMES TO AUTHENTIC, HARDCORE SURF SHOPS! I bought my 12'6" Voyager from Southern Spears about 4 years ago and love it. I mainly paddle on back waters and bays in the Galveston area but have tried numerous other boards and types when I travel. The Voyager is the best for me. I'm 65 years old weigh 165 and in decent shape. I always take my 30 dog. This year we are planning on doing some extensive travel so I started looking into inflatables. I shopped online and read all the reviews about inflatables. Ultimately I decided on a Riviera Voyager inflatable with the fiberglass collapsible paddle. I tried it out today and it is awesome! Inflation took a little effort. The board handles just a easy as the epoxy Voyager. I really can't tell a difference in performance. It glides effortlessly across the water and tracks great. It's a little more comfortable to stand on and being lighter makes it much easier to carry. I got a Riviera adjustable fiberglass paddle. I think I like it better than my carbon fiber adjustable paddle. Best of all Damien is extremely knowledgeable and a pleasure to do business with. As for price, Southern Spears is very competitive. My Colorado teenagers had their first experience surfing with Southern Spears! I wish I could remember the name of the instructor, but he was wonderful! Such a great value at $100 for both of them for 2 hours of instruction, and they had their own instructor. Also, it was more like 2 hours and 20 minutes! The only complaint is now my kids are hooked on surfing, but we live nowhere near an ocean, ha ha! read more
