Stopped in for a quick bite to eat. No menu or prices displayed for the various sizes of food offered. Was unsure of the meat offerings because they have frosted coverings in the buffet style server behind plexiglass. They also only take cash. I assumed they had curry goat like most Caribbean carryouts and ordered that. I inquired about the sizes and was shown various styrofoam containers. I chose the small which is the next size up from the mini. My container was filled with rice and a dry slaw first and was followed by a small spoonful and a half of the meat mixture. Surely this serving should have been reserved for a mini. I took my order of rice with the small serving of goat home. It was flavorful but mostly bones. Listen...if you want to have THE BEST AUTHENTIC JAMAICAN BREAKFAST Sunsplash is the place! From Peanut Porridge to Ackee and Saltfish with butter beans I mean EVERYTHING! And it tastes soo good. They make oven baked dumpling if you don't want it fried...the fritters/fish cakes looks so good but I'm allergic to fish but I buy it all the time for my friends and they love it. My order is liver with boil dumpling and callaloo! Now not every Jamaican restaurant makes callaloo without saltfish and from the time I see they do it I was SOLD!. Now lets talk about the BAKERY component.....WOW let's just say I haven't been back to Champion Bakery in the Bronx for 5 YEARS ok! FRESH HARD DOUGH BREAD HOURLY...what does that mean? This restaurant lost 3 stars on their rating because the younger female staff have no manners. I entered the establishment greeting them with a "good morning ladies!" Not only did they not respond, they didn't even acknowledge my presence. They continued to chit and chat behind the food display so I said "good morning" a second time, again no response from the younger female staff. One older woman who was referred to as Auntie, finally greeted me and took my order. I proceeded to the juice bar, and this young man provided FIVE STAR customer service. He even went as far as to check out my food order that I was patiently waiting for (he realized that I was waiting so long) yet unsurprisingly, the younger female staff alleged no knowledge of my order. Found Sunsplash through a Restaurant.com deal. Customer service was so so poor. Total turn off. Cashiers were unaware of how the deal worked. They seemed ticked off by my coupon use although that was what brought me to the restaurant (I will never understand this phenomenon). I asked to see a menu to confirm the prices I'd seen online. "We have no menus". When I asked for prices: "Market prices. Everything's different." No tangible menus is almost forgivable, but giving a customer arbitrary prices and getting frustrated because they ask? Wow. I watched the server dish up my food while I waited. Somehow, this prompted the servers to talk about me as if I wasn't in earshot of their snide comments. One to the other, "what she watching you for?" Unbelievable. It baffles me that people who hate their jobs take it out on customers. Truth is, the food is good. My sister went here once and raved about the friendly Rastafarian juice-bar attendant who introduced her to wheatgrass shots. Too bad he wasn't there today. I'd love to have enjoyed my tender stewed oxtail, perfectly cooked kale, and well-seasoned coconut rice and beans without the stench of attitude. I know that location for serving one of the best beef patties and their freshly baked jamaican bread, but I must say that the food their severed is also very delicious and tasty. The Oxtail dinner with rice and beans and cabbage was great.The service is also excellent. They give you so much food that you can eat and still have some left-overs for later. I get the oxtail with rice and beans and a very green smoothie on a weekly basis. This spot is very convenient and has a lot of options. However, the women at the front could do a lot better in terms of customers service. Especially Nidia and Trisha who I had to check a couple times. I always had a great experience with the juice man from Dominica. The other women have been rude and inappropriate. I decided to wait until I had visited this restaurant a couple of times to write my review....and this place is definitely a favorite! Breakfast: the codfish/ saltfish fritters are Delicious little nuggets of FLAVA, their fried dumplings are fluffy yet moist on the inside but ooh so krunchy on the outside, saltfish with okra is great, callaloo, liver and kidney are awesome too. Lunch/ dinner: oxtails are flavorful and tender, curry or brownstew chicken is perfect and of course you can't go wrong with their juicy yet crispy fried chicken or the well seasoned Jerk chicken. Juice bar: try one... Any one, they're​ all good,made nice and fresh when you order I love the Kale String and the GuavaMama. Their Spinach patties are so good I don't even miss the Beef ones. I love their saltfish fritters and porridge. This is my go to spot for breakfast... they only disappoint when they are out of my salt mackrel or cornmeal porridge. Which is often times because I am late to the party and there are other hungry hippos like myself that gets there early. The fritters are everything!! The cornmeal porridge is every jamaican's breakfast wish. I can't speak on their lunch or dinner menu, but give me the breakfast every morning and I am sure to have a productive day. They recently renovated and I love the new set-up. I am also told by my husband and his friends that their juice bar is amazing, never tried it myself, but I take my picky husband's word for it.... oh and when my Mom is in town their patty is a must have. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. I purchased food Saturday October 21, 2017 and Tuesday October 24, 2017. On both occasions the food quality of the food was poor. This is highly unusual for this place of business as their food is well prepared and tasty. The reason that I am taking the time to write this review, is that I live 45 minutes away from this restaurant and I purchase food from them every week. Needless to say the location is not convenient for me, but type and quality of the food brings me back time after time. What is makes this disappointing and most frustrating for me is that I purchased food on Tuesday October 24th where the vegetables were 'NOT' properly cooked. You can tell that they vegetables had just been cut to be prepared to steam. I purchased more gravy and onions than actual tofu. This is NOT the expectation that any LOYAL and REPEAT customer wants to experience. This was the same experience on Saturday as it relates to vegetables. It is my hope that either the owner or another person that has a PERSONAL investment in ensuring that the quality of food presented to Sunsplash's customer base, is one that they can proudly state reflects with them pride. Please please take the time to speak to your cooks to ensure that the preparation and quality of food is done with care. The guy who helped me was so nice, but the food and quantity leave a lot to desired. I ordered oxtail...who can mess that up, right....and it was dreadful. I brought it home and ended up throwing most of it away. They gave me a big portion of rice and peas, which was tasted old and dry, and very little oxtail. I've heard great things about their freshly prepared juices, but I'll go elsewhere for food. read more
