Miguel and his team at Sunshine Brickpointing did an excellent job repointing the entire back and side of our historic Capitol Hill rowhouse. From start to finish, Miguel was incredibly communicative and easy to reach, which was so refreshing. Their estimate was detailed, the crew was as tidy as you can possibly be on a job like this, and they finished right on schedule. I was also struck by what a great team Miguel has. The guys genuinely seemed to enjoy working together, and Miguel himself was on site frequently throughout the project. Everyone was professional, pleasant, and clearly took pride in their work. We're extremely pleased with the finished product and would absolutely hire Miguel and Sunshine Brickpointing again for any future masonry work. read more

A few weeks after Miguel and his crew finished, I noticed a small area (3.5cm X 1cm) of brick mortar that had not been filled. I called Miguel, and he immediately and cordially arranged to come back to fix it. No hassle at all. He skillfully matched the color and texture of the new mortar to the 77-year old original so it's nearly impossible to distinguish new from old mortar. Miguel and his truly is truly a craftsmanship treasure of skill, efficiency and affability. I think his wife also works behind the scenes keeping the whole business running smoothly. read more

I've had another terrific experience with Sunshine Brickpointing! The latest project involved transforming my "nothing" of a backyard lawn into a dramatic lower patio and driveway turnaround (so I no longer have to back into a blind alley!) Miguel asked tons of questions to make sure he understood my vision of what I wanted - he even did a "test drive" with a car similar in size to mine to make sure the circle was large enough to accommodate the turn! I wanted permeable pavers and he offered choices that go perfectly with the colors of my house. Miguel is very good at keeping you informed of the project's status; he and his crew work really efficiently but they don't skimp on any details or excellence. As part of this latest project, Miguel poured a new concrete base for the deck steps (the previous owner had simply placed the bottom of the wood stair on bare ground!) and he added to the concrete area underneath the deck that he constructed previously, so I can more easily pull out my trash bins. I totally enjoy working with Miguel and I'll be using him for more projects in the future! read more

Miguel and the Sunshine Brickpointing team did an amazing job repairing an exterior wall of our historic east Capitol Hill row house. We got several estimates for the work, and Miguel's was the most detailed and reasonably priced. We're very happy with the quality of the work from Sunshine Brickpointing. Miguel was extremely communicative throughout the process, providing updates with progress photos. He also noticed some small additional issues that we were previously aware of but hadn't fixed yet, and offered to take care of them for minimal cost. He even removed an unused satellite dish base from the roof for free. The work was finished on time and on budget, and we felt extremely confident in the quality and informed throughout. I will absolute be calling Sunshine Brickpointing for any future masonry or chimney work. read more

Miguel and his crew do great work, and they do it neatly. For the past 2 weeks they have been working on a major job along the exterior wall of my house, and multiple neighbors have told me how impressed they are at the cleanliness of the work. Miguel clearly plans out ahead of time how they will prepare the site to manage the work and the debris, they clean throughout the day as they go, and always finish the day making sure everything is neat and tidy. Miguel is the first person I'll be calling for any masonry work I need done in the future, and given his clear communication and competitive pricing, will likely be the only call I make. read more

One of the best experiences working with a contractor in a long time. Professional, transparent, honest, punctual, and competitive rates. I had a botched concrete job from a previous contractor that seemed beyond salvageable. Sunshine tore it down and rebuilt it even better than the original and did it promptly and punctually. It's rare to find an expert contractor these days who is as honest, fair, and dependable as these guys. I can't reccomended them enough. read more

I had a great experience. Responsive, detail oriented, and very high quality work. I would strongly recommend.

Incredible Masonry and Water Intrusion Work - Highly Recommend Miguel After years of struggling with a persistent issue involving a large masonry crack along a shared wall, I started getting quotes from contractors. That's when I found Miguel, and I only wish I had found him years earlier. From the start, Miguel stood out. He was quick to respond, brought sample bricks that closely matched the 90-year-old masonry on my home, and offered a quote that was about one-third the cost of other estimates I received. He was also incredibly flexible with scheduling, which made the process smooth. Miguel and his team set up scaffolding, taped off windows and the porch, and ensured the work area was clean and safe. He even noticed an issue with water pooling on a recently poured cement slab and proactively recommended I follow up with that contractor, a sign of his keen eye and integrity. Problem Solving Above and Beyond After the crack repair was completed, I mentioned a long-standing water intrusion issue. Miguel came back a few days later with advanced tools (including a moisture/infrared meter) and began a thorough investigation. While his original work area was dry, he kept digging--literally and figuratively--until he found the true source of the issue: the French drain wasn't sloped properly, causing water to pool near the house's interior footer. He proposed a thoughtful plan to fix it and gave me a very reasonable estimate. Miguel lives in the same neighborhood and really understands older homes in Brightwood, Takoma, and Petworth, which was reassuring. Precise, Clean, and Thorough Execution Miguel: Excavated down to the footer in front of the house. Repaired the exterior foundation, applied a waterproof membrane, and regraded the soil. Installed a new drain and verified functionality before backfilling. Worked cleanly, even covering piles of dirt to minimize disruption. Neighbors even commented on how organized and tidy his worksite was compared to others. During excavation, he discovered an old unused gas pipe acting as a tunnel for water. He sealed it and repaired nearby masonry, including around a damp window. Interior Work - Just as Meticulous On the inside, Miguel cleaned up poorly done previous work. He removed loose 90-year-old plaster that was causing problems, rerouted and re-sloped the French drain so it properly connected to the sump pump, and eliminated any water-catching pockets. Again, he: Taped off the area. Left no trace when finished. Double-checked everything before closing it up. Results and Follow-up After several heavy rains, Miguel personally followed up to confirm that the water issue was resolved. For the first time since I moved in, my basement stayed completely dry. He also helped with several odd jobs, like mounting my Blink doorbell, securing the cable wire neatly to the brick, and making sure the HVAC input and output were up to code. In summary Sunshine Brick pointing was Thorough and thoughtful in his assessments. Uses modern tools and techniques. Maintains a clean, safe, and efficient work site. Communicates well and is incredibly fair with pricing. Truly understands the challenges of older homes in DC. I highly recommend Miguel for any masonry, water intrusion, or foundation work, especially if you're in an older home. His combination of skill, care, and value is rare to find. I only wish I had hired him sooner. read more

I live in a 1912 DC row house. A brick retaining wall, as well as the bricks on my front walk leading up to the house were all in serious need of repair and/or replacement. Miguel Mejia, owner of Sunshine Brickpointing, along with his crew, did an excellent job. Miguel's rates were quite reasonable, and less than 2 other estimates I received. They worked tirelessly to complete the job in one day, coming back the second day only to wash all the bricks and to make sure the job was done to his and to my satifaction. They left the work area spotless. I would add that dealing with Miguel and his crew was a pleasure. I am happy to give Sunshine Brickpointing my highest recommendation. read more

Sunshine redid some stone stairs and walkway for my client. Not only was their work done quickly and very well, but Miguel reached out to me, before I had realized, and explained that he had accidentally charged for one item twice, and he refunded the difference. Anyone can make a billing mistake, but I really appreciate that he caught it and corrected it. I will definitely be calling them next time I need this type of work done. read more

I had a great experience with Sunshine Brickpointing! I had them perform repointing on the front wall of my 1917 Columbia Heights rowhouse. Miguel and his crew set up scaffolding and taped off all my windows. It was clear they really cared about doing good work. They worked for several days replacing old/deteriorating mortar and replacing it with fresh mortar that was a very close color match. I'm really beyond happy with the final results, I'm so glad I went with Miguel. I have no doubt that Sunshine Brickpointing is the best repointing contractor in DC! read more
