They quoted $9600 for a completely new unit. I called another heating and air company to verify replacement was really necessary. The technician found a disconnected wire on the compressor. Upon reconnection, the system started right up and is still working. After speaking with the office manager at Alpha Heating and Air, she apologized for the mistake of a inexperienced technician that left the ac unit inoperable from the disconnected wire. Alpha Heating and Air will compensate my distress with a full refund of the cost for this routine service call.

He was done in about an hour. Today I had another electrician do two hours worth of work installing electrical for split unit. His price was $328 (including all parts and labor, and a 10% military discount), well below half of the other guy's price for a job that was much more involved. Lesson learned. I don't appreciate being taken advantage of, especially as a veteran who defended this country. I hate giving bad ratings, but being severely overcharged warrants this two star rating, which should in all honesty be one star.
