Wow, this was a very different experience for me, but I have to give top of the line marks for the reflexology services offered at the Sunshine Foot Spa on Dale Mabry in Carrollwood. The spa is located in a very nondescript strip mall at the intersection of Dale Mabry and North Village Drive, roughly diagonally across the street from the shopping plaza that holds Carmel Café & Wine Bar and Chuck E. Cheese.
I had a klutzy sports injury a few weeks ago when I stepped down too hard on my right heel, and ended up with a bruise on the bottom of my foot that was slow to heal. I mentioned this to my extremely adorable girlfriend and she suggested that I go to a Chinese reflexology spa to have it treated. She is a nurse, and spends long hours on her feet, so I figured I should listen to her advice and give this place a try.
I made an appointment for Saturday afternoon, and showed up at the spa without a clue in the world of what to expect. I was shown back to a private treatment area, and the technician set out a bucket of warm water infused with some herbs and bath salts. I was instructed to sit back and soak my feet in this bucket while he prepared everything else.
Now I have to confess....the bottoms of my feet are incredibly ticklish, and the thought of me paying to have someone play "This Little Piggie" on my tootsies was not giving me the warm and fuzzies. But, I promised to be strong and bear with the agony of someone dragging their fingers across the bottoms of my feet while I bit my lip and tried not to giggle like a little schoolgirl.
The technician was fantastic, and he explained what he was doing as he started massaging my feet, my toes, my ankles and my calves. He was applying pressure on the bones of my feet and then rubbing and lightly pounding in other areas as he released the tension and manipulated my feet and toes. (Pop, pop, pop....ahhhhhh!) He spent about 30 minutes on my feet, and dug in with his thumbs and broke up the sore spot on my heel. Think of something like acupuncture without the needles -- just the pressure from his thumbs on various parts of my feet. Oh baby, baby make it hurt so good!!!
But wait, we're not done yet... Next came a neck and shoulders massage where he had me sit on a stool, and then lean over from the waist as he once again used his thumbs and found all of my tensed-up pressure spots across my shoulders and up my neck. His manipulations helped to relax my muscles, and he once again popped the tension in my neck and shoulders. By this point I was feeling like Jell-O, but magically all of my aches and pains had disappeared.
This whole treatment lasted for about an hour, and I was charged an amazingly inexpensive $39 for the service. While I have experienced chiropractic massage in the past, this was my first time enjoying traditional Chinese reflexology and I am sold on the benefits. I will definitely be back to Sunshine Foot Spa for another treatment. read more
