Sunsets West Co-op is way above 5 star level. The owners are so wonderful. This is the only grocery for miles and has all of the essentials. I was so happy for Sunsets West because I had to make an emergency trip for emergency items such as diapers (I really thought I might be out of luck!), detergent, freezer bags, and eggs. They even have all of the ingredients to make homemade laundry soap, which I will make the next time I am up this direction. The Co-op is divided into two sections: The Market and The Eatery. They are part of the same building and are not separated on the inside. You simply walk past the grocery area into The Eatery and order breakfast or lunch. The coffee is wonderful! They have a medium roast or a dark roast. The dark roast is my favorite. The coffee is made in a French press--my favorite way to make coffee! During my coffee break my daughter drew pictures, Terry painted, and we all talked about art. Neither Jane or Terry minded that my children played their piano and actively encouraged both to play because "It's here to be used." After that day they remembered my children's names and would ask about them if they weren't in the co-op with me. My daughter had a great time during the visit and asked "When can we visit the nice people again?" My hope is to visit frequently this summer. I will be back with my husband next week. He can't wait to try their black beans and rice. read more

Stopped at the co-op looking for a quick snack before continuing on with our drive to Cape Flattery. We expected a typical convenience store, but it turned out to be small store with a small eatery. The people there were very nice and welcoming. When we asked what they had to eat, they told us they had a very limited menu, but if we were looking for a regular restaurant, we could drive about 2 miles up and get a bite to eat by the inn. We decided to do that, but picked up a few treats to go. They carry chocolates, chips, beverages, herbs, spices and more. read more

On my summer trip around the Pacific Northwest I ran into some amazing and incredible people. Two of them told me that I simply HAD to go here. I am so very glad that I did. On my drive out to Point Flattery ( a MUST do ), I passed through Clallam Bay. The shop didn't open until 10 or 11 and I was an hour early, so I drove on through and made note of where it was so that I could hit it on the way back. Its hard to describe the vibe of a place, but it seems as though Sunsets West Co op is a sort of neucleus around which the people of the area gravitate. In an area with spotty cell phone reception and no big box stores, Terry and Jane's are happy to offer you the wifi password so that you can sit in their tiny eating area and look up directions or contact home. Around the store I saw signs advertising night time jam sessions for locals wanting to get together for music and poetry. I only wish I could have stayed. Their food. was. incredible. I got a big bowl of black beans and wild rice for lunch, served with sour cream and fresh salsa. Jane made sure I had a second helping of sour cream when she saw that I had finished mine early. I have never tasted anything so simple, yet so flavorful! While I was relaxing after eating, the owner of a hagfish catching company? came in to talk to Jane and Terry. They wanted to make sure that the noise from their work was not bothering them at the store (they live nearby), and asked if they could buy lunches from them each day... It was really special to see two businesses working together and helping each other out like that. So. In summation: Eat their food. Buy the local jewelry. When in Clallam Bay, do NOT miss this place! Jane and Terry are genuinely good people. Their soups and burgers are incredible and their coffee is French pressed right in front of your eyes. The store is a delightful old school with a bit of everything.....my husband and I LOVE it! My friend and I were driving back to Seattle from Cape Flattery, and we were a little desperate for a cup of coffee and some WiFi to look up directions. We stumbled into Clallam Bay and happened upon Sunsets West Co-op, and were overwhelmed with the hospitality shown to us by the proprietor (I think her name is Jane). Individual French press coffees (delicious!!), snacks on snacks on snacks, plus we were invited to join a group of people in the kitchen to learn how to make preserved lemons - evidently the pharmacist in town also likes to cook and holds these classes at Sunsets when her time permits. Before we left, Jane made sure we had a taste of the salad the group had made using some preserved lemons. They also had WiFi, so we were able to look up directions to our next destination. Thank you, Jane! I'll be back again in November! read more

Great place. We stopped and had a cup of tea. Cozy room with family style tables. Lots of magazines and games to play, you are encouraged to sit, visit, and stay awhile. We were referred to the Co-op by one of our neighbors in the nearby motel where we stayed overnight. When we asked him to recommend a good place for breakfast, he said "The Co-op might fix you something, and the food is very good." They had just opened when we arrived, and although the owners Jane and Terry don't normally serve breakfast, they were very gracious and fixed two wonderful bowls of oatmeal with tasty fruit & nut garnishes. After a day of seeing the Makah Neah Bay Cultural Museum and hiking up to Cape Flattery, we stopped in again and had some soup. Both times we had wonderful conversations. We mistakenly left a favorite Greek fisherman's hat there, but we mentioned where we were going next. When we arrived, there was a note from Jane saying to call her about our hat. She mailed it to our home in Seattle. Thanks so much for your kind hospitality and graciousness, Jane and Terry! Meeting you was one of the highlights of our winter vacation to the Olympic Peninsula after working for over a year on the Obama campaign. read more

I was staying in Sekiu before doing a hike near Ozette and felt like we were basically on the edge of the earth. Very little around here. The only restaurant in town looked very sketchy and had bad reviews. We came here hoping to find a can of soup or something we could heat up. What we didn't expect was to find a spectacular little restaurant. The owner of the restaurant is a lovely Australian woman who is exceptionally friendly and a PHENOMENAL cook. The food feels more like going to a friend's house for dinner than being in a restaurant, only your friend seriously knows how to cook. I got a bowl of zesty tomato soup and a salad. The salad was just beautiful. I was expecting some wilted bagged lettuce and shredded carrots with bottled dressing. What I got was a large bowl of local mixed greens from a coop farm topped with homemade pickles, fresh cherry tomatoes, sunflower seeds, goat cheese, cucumber, and a homemade vinaigrette. It was DELICIOUS. The zesty tomato soup tasted like what I always hoped carrot ginger soup would taste like. Creamy with ginger and chili oil, very unique, delicious, scraped the bottom of my bowl. My dining partner got the chili stack burger and it too was incredible. He ate every bite. I HIGHLY recommend this place. I was totally blown away. I was expecting nothing and got something I'd be happy to eat even in a big city. Not to mention it's super affordable. Our dinners were about $16 total for both of us. We had a very strange experience at this co-op recently. We took our children on a walk into town to search for a treat after a long morning of beach combing on a vacation weekend. We stopped in at the co-op and noticed they sold ice cream by the scoop. The owner/employee made an off-hand, unsolicited comment to us that we should only buy the no sugar ice cream for our children, as sugar causes cancer. We shrugged this off. Then, after being ignored for quite some time, we finally asked to buy ice cream for our kids and the owner made a comment such as "I'd rather not sell you any as it's not a healthy choice." At that point we left, deciding not to spend our money there. Our kids handled the situation very well, backing our decision to not support a place that would mistreat us this way. We ended up going into Seiku the next day after a day hike to find ice cream there. We all know ice cream is a once in a while treat, but a treat to have on vacation for a special occasion. Why have it in your store if you're not willing to sell it? We felt mistreated and discriminated against. read more

What can I say, this group of people that run this shop are of the very highest quality found anywhere on earth. NOT HYPERBOLE! These are great people, period. We were on a fishing trip in the neighboring town of Sekiu, WA and had rented a small cabin there. Upon arrival and inspection of the cabin, that was suppose to have a fully outfitted mini-kitchenette, we discovered that the kitchen didn't have the proper utensils and kitchen ware (pots, pans and bowls) to cook any kind of meal. We contacted the management and they basically told us we get what we get. They recommended we go up to Sunsets West Co-Op to get what we needed. Sunset West didn't have the pots, pans and bowls that we needed (because they just don't sell that kind of stuff), but the gals at the counter asked us what we needed and lent to us what we needed from their own personal supply!! What? Yup, their own supply, from their own kitchens! No charge. Just requested that we bring them back and to pay the good forward... Oh yes, we will! Thank you so much Sunset West, you saved our trip and simply made our year! These are very good people and you can trust them. Folks like this make this world a better place! God bless :) read more
