We stopped by for Trivia Night on a weekday and the parking lot was completely full. I ended up parking on the street a few minutes away by foot. Ambiance (3/5): Rob Ray's is a casual, no frills, open air taproom. Most of the seating is at picnic-style tables. After a while, I grabbed a chair to have some back support. There's also no A/C so I imagine it can get pretty toasty when it's hot outside. The walls are covered with flags of different colleges. I found my alma mater, the University of Michigan, which was pretty awesome! Service (4.5/5): You order at the bar. The service is friendly and even Rob Ray was there. He introduced himself and asked if it was my first time. There was a bit of a line at some points but it moved quickly. Food (N/A): While they don't serve food, they do allow you to bring food. There's a taco joint across the street and they have a menu at Rob Ray's. You can call in and pick up your order. Drinks (4/5): Now this is what we're here for! They have a nice selection of beers on tap and bottled beer. I'm all about the variety and trying new beers so that's what I did. Every single beer I tried was one I had never had before. They also have some seltzers. If you're looking for a deal, you can buy tokens at a flat rate. They also allow you to make donations with your purchase to firefighters, nurses, police officers, etc. which is a really nice touch. It makes giving back easy if you'd like to do so! Overall: While I wish they had A/C and the seating was a little more comfortable, I would definitely return to try out some more of their beers. Trivia was a good time too. When we got there the reservations of the picnic tables was not the case. Perhaps that is only for special events? I did see that some of the events had an event fee, so those reservation requirements may only fall on those dates. A lot of picnic tables. A lot of space to put down a picnic blanket or have chairs available. There is a small playground for children, and there were a lot of play toys (balls of all sorts - basketball, soccer, volleyball, etc.). I am not sure if those belong to the site or if people brought their own. There is a little stage where a musician was playing live music. There are highball tables up by the concession stand area. The parking lot of very large, gravel. There was a little plastic pool that was filled up with water and ice for pups. I am not sure if that belongs to the site, but after the dog adoption people left the pool stayed. The only negative was that there is only one women's bathroom at the time that I visited. Luckily it wasn't too busy when I went, but I could imagine that would be a nightmare. All in all - it is a very cute place. They are active on their Facebook site and their website and they have some YouTube clips. Nice concept.

Someone takes the time to do a small chalkboard "art" for each of the beers on tap. I like that they have 8 oz pours for half the pint price. Maybe it gets crowded in the evenings or on weekends, but usually there are only a couple of folks there when I visit. Outside seating if desired. The literally adjoining restaurant serves a Vietnamese fusion menu similar to Nobi. Where else can you fill your car up with gas, buy a unique $13 bottle of beer, sample a variety of craft beers, and get a bahn mi?

When I tried to order a 2nd round, she flat-out refused to make any more espresso martinis, claiming they were "out of espresso." That would be believable... if I hadn't watched the two other bartenders (who were very nice btw) make them for other guests right in front of me. After being told they were out of espresso by the red headed bartender, I went a couple chairs down to the other bartender on duty who happily made me more espresso martinis. That's not just bad service -- that's lying to a regular customer for no reason. It was lazy, petty, and extremely unprofessional. If she can't be bothered to do her job, maybe she shouldn't be behind the bar. Management needs to take a hard look at who they have representing their business, because one arrogant bartender shouldn't be allowed to wreck the reputation of an otherwise great place. If the red headed bartender with the centipede looking thing for a tattoo on her left arm is working, avoid at all costs.
