This is a great place to golf! For all ages. Such a gem. Pro shop staff, starters, rangers - everyone is there to help. Friendly and good to introduce themselves and find out about you. Grounds crew is awesome. Troon took over service contract for the county in 2024 and improvements are awesome. They continue to work on the driving range and short game practice field but by Fall this place will shine. It's July and in this heat the tee boxes, fairways and greens are super green. Even the pro shop has received updates. Weekends are busy as expected but Why would you play anywhere else? Excellent value for the money. read more

Great course with great staff. The course is friendly for newer golfers and the staff talked to us and it was a good time.

This review is for the 18 hole course. I got on around 930a on a Thursday. It was quite busy and I had a slow solo walking in front of me. I had a fast solo riding behind me so it was not my preferred pace. The course plays well overall. The fairways are wide open, the greens and tee boxes are in decent shape for the most part. Some of the white tee boxes were in bad repair with very little grass. The green sizes are standard, not very large but they are all in pretty good shape for the most part. Number 15, a par 3 over the water with a bunker close in on the left side of the holes is a real challenge, especially with the wind in your face. There are 3 holes where you are hitting blind shots off the Tee which is always a challenge when you're playing a course for the first time. Overall this is a decent course and @ $25 with cart for Senior isn't bad. The carts are old, slow and in need of repair. read more

Arrival: I was waiting behind a gentleman chatting up the person behind the counter to check in and pay. Another gentleman walks in and goes around and is serviced first. Frustrating. Playing 18 today: we expected it to be busy for the holiday, so we weren't too surprised when on the front 9 we had to wait a little at 6 of the holes to tee off. Then, on 13, the course asks if they can add a person to our group- odd but ok. At 16, they come to talk to us again: "Um, the people behind you complained that you're slow so, um, could you play faster?" We finished our round in 4 hours and 5 minutes. If the employee had just checked with the starter on when we teed off and what time it was, they could have handled that with so much more grace. We were, by general rules, not playing slow. Service aside, the holes are right on top of each other and people from 3 different holes at 2 different times were hitting off our fairway. For the price I paid and service my friends and I had, I am not planning to return to this course. read more

We recently went here as part of a bachelor weekend. I can't say enough about this place. The best thing I'll point out are the workers who went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. The accommodated us at every turn and we couldn't have been happier. If you're a pro golfer, the course itself won't impress you, but for the cost and for the skill level (very low) we had as a group, it was fun which is what we wanted. I've been going to Sunset Hills for a little over six months now, the same amount of time I've been playing golf. This is me and my wife's favorite weekend activity because every time we walk in the club house the staff is very welcoming. Also, the people who play here are very friendly and understanding with beginner golfers. Not to mention all the nature that decorate the course, such as deer. We've played a hand full of public and semi-public golf courses and Sunset Hills, for it's price, is in great shape! It has a good combination of challenging and forgiving holes. Beware of hole 8 (par 3 hole) - there is a house behind the green and today I hit a ball over the green and a girl came in with a very aggressive attitude saying that my ball hit her car and she "wanted to punch me in the face" but I offered her money instead. Felt like a scam, but I wasn't willing to waste a lot of time - just be aware! Long story short, we totally recommend Sunset Hills other than today's incident, it has always been a great experience! read more

Love the Short Course. It's a great walk and a really nice course for the beginner or novice golfer.

You can't beat the value of playing here. The only downside is how busy the course can be, especially on the weekends. It often means waiting for the person ahead of you and someone waiting behind you. Some of the tee boxes are in rough shape, but I suppose that's expected with the number of people coming through each day. All things considered, I'd say they do a great job maintaining the course, and they do their best to make sure you have a good time. The "short" (par 3) course is in better shape and a little more quiet. I enjoy playing both courses. They also have nice areas to practice chipping and putting. read more

Just okay. The soccer balls were all old and beat up. The course is on an active golf course so you're constantly in each others way. It's nine holes I think? Most foot golf are 18. No scorecards so we had no idea what the pars were or even where the next hole was at. Grass around the holes wasn't cut on a few and other holes were above the ground by an inch or two so had to pop the ball up to get into the hole. I'm sure there's better courses in Charlotte. read more

First time here. Had a great time on the 9 hole 3 par course. They also have a full 18 hole course, and driving range. A great place for a cheap day in the sun. Not overly busy so it's a great place for bad golfers like me. You don't get pressured to play quick like you do at the fancy golf courses. The staff was very friendly at check on. Ive only played the par 3. Its a bit of a beat up course, but the price has been fair for the course youre playing. They also have a pretty open practice area for chipping and putting. Having played Sunset Hills a number of times over the past two years, I maintain my claim that any form of golf is better than a day in the office. Two things keep my friends and I coming back to Sunset Hills from time to time: location and price. It's a good place for us to meet after work for a quick round, and you can't beat $22. It is a part of the Charlotte Public Golf system and includes a children's learning course as well, which makes it a perfect place for the beginning golfer. The full-size course is what it is though, and what it is, is a short inexpensive muni track with uneven tee boxes and hard, furry greens that are the smallest I've ever seen. Even with a wedge in your hand, you are looking to land the ball short of the putting surface if you want to wind up putting. It is also one of the most dangerous courses I've played. I've never heard "fore!" yelled so much on a course before. A lot of the holes run parallel to each other, and tee-boxes are perilously close to greens on some holes. It's definitely a place you want to stay on your toes, and maybe even throw a hard hat in your golf bag. All that being said, one of my best moments on a golf course occurred at Sunset Hills earlier this summer. My friend Dave and I were out there one Wednesday afternoon, trying to get in a late 18. It was crowded, and we were waiting on the 2nd tee box when the twosome playing behind us asked if they could join us. We said yes, and as they introduced themselves, I found myself looking up at James Worthy, all 6'7" of him. UNC star and '82 Final Four MVP James Worthy, 3-time NBA Champion and former Laker James Worthy, recently voted one of the top 50 NBA players of all time. I almost fell down. Worthy just happened to be in town to support of an upcoming golf tournament benefitting the Boys & Girls Club of Gastonia, his hometown, and his friend dragged him over to Sunset for a few holes. They only stayed for the front nine, but we had a good time chatting it up between holes. Perhaps most importantly, he was a personable and gracious guy, which is what you hope for out of all your sports heroes. As Carolina basketball fans, it was a great moment for Dave and I. As a result, Sunset Hills has become a special place to me. Not the purest or best maintained course, but for a quick, inexpensive round, you could do worse. Sunset Hills is kinda a pain in the butt to get to (about 10 minutes or more from downtown Charlotte), but the price is always right: it's less than 30 bucks to play an 18 hole round. That's pretty darn good considering the course is never crowded and is in pretty good condition for a public course, all things considered. I like playing here a lot for those reasons. You can show up and get on within 15 minutes at most, and the course moves pretty quickly, so you're rarely waiting around at holes for groups to pass or finish up. The course is decently challenging, too, and like I said: it's not a bad course in terms of upkeep. It's a good play. read more

Played a couple of rounds here to get a good feel for it.. and I'm not impressed. Will likely not be coming back here. I'm +18 handicap golfer and I didn't like this course very much. It's a pretty simple layout, but what makes it so bad is two things: (1) cramped course; and (2) terrible greens. On a busy Saturday morning tee-off, while riding, my cart got hit by an errant golf ball while getting ready to tee-off on the second hole. A little later on that same round, another ball went sailing and bounced up near my buddy's head. The problem is the course is so tight that teeboxes are really close to one another. Not enjoyable having to fear getting hit in the dome. Majority of the greens were not tended properly. It was uneven at points and had definite burn here and there making it difficult to read the green before a putt. It's cheap though so if you want to play a round of casual golf, go fer it. Just played this course today( 7/6/10) The greens are destroyed, no grass just dirt. They have signs up saying the greens are in transition, but Its worse than that, its almost unplayable. I would thing they could make temp greens but perhaps not. Nice people, the course is 29 bucks and you get 4 bucks off for the greens. Still not good. I cant see them repairing this or being up to standard until fall at the earliest. So one doesn't think Im a snob golfer, I have a 30 handicap. So when I say its bad, you can take that to the bank. read more

Of the 15 public golf courses that I have played in Charlotte, I must say that Sunset Hills was my favorite. You cannot find a better deal in terms of course course condition and the price you pay. The staff is always friendly which unfortunately I didn't see everywhere. I recommend playing this tricky but fair golf course. As a Perks member, I have played all the public courses in the area and have been very satisfied. However, Sunset HIlls was a disappointment. I called a head for a tee time, but when I arrived I stood in a line of 8 people. Two groups had no tee time, but were told to go ahead. There was no T- paper in the Ladies Room or paper towels. There was no soap in the Men's Room. The front nine was in fair shape, but the back nine had several holes that were like playing in a cow pasture. Many of the greens were in terrible shape. The gentlemen covering the desk, was also attending the snack bar, which accounted for about a ten minute wait in line. I will not be returning to this course. read more

This place is best for its value - 30 bucks for 18 holes is pretty decent. Unfortunately, the conditions are just not good. The greens were burned and difficult to putt. I was in disbelief at how terrible this course is. The tee boxes are uneven, the fairways and the rough have the same length grass, and the greens have the tallest grass I've ever putted on. It was essentially like putting on your living room carpet. On top of all of that, I had to pay $24 for NINE HOLES at 6pm. What am absolute ripoff. I'll be sure to warn others before wasting their time and money at a course that clearly doesn't care about their quality. read more
