Let's be honest all the places in Sanibel are rustic and way too expensive. We would always stay at the more expensive sister hotel, but I saw this amazing deal Sunset Beach had so I thought I would take a chance. First of all we got a garden suite which means no view, but it was HUGE. Way bigger than the rooms at the other place for way cheaper. Additionally it's the same amenities as the sister hotels which includes free biking kayaking tennis courts and obviously they are right on the beach. Their breakfast spread which is included is also impressive. Found our new favorite place to stay in Sanibel. read more

This is a cheap motel on the beach. Kitchen stuck in the 70's, they attempted some kind of unusual renovation but huge miss. Floors were dirty, bathroom walls & doors are full of stains, door kept sticking since wood expanded. The tub was clean but mildew building on grout & caulking. Dead bugs on walls. AC unit not working properly, hot at times. Nightstand light kept flickering. The one positive thing we're the sheets were clean and smelled good but the bed was so uncomfortable & noisy. $568 for 2 nights, ($15 resort fees) Rip off! We were very happy with our stay. After just reading some of the reviews I have to think upgrades have been made and maybe a change of staff. The cleaning staff were professional and polite. Abe at the front desk could not have been more accommodating. Our room was clean with what looked like new carpets and bedding. People need to realize they did not book a 5 star resort. This is a beach resort. The salt water destroys everything quickly. I recommend they stay at a hotel at Montauk Point on Long Island see what you get there. For the hotel I recommend raising the mirror over the "desk" and make it a dressing area. No one uses a desk anymore and wrapped plastic cups no glass in the bathroom. Love the breakfast basket and free coffee and tea in the lobby. Good amount of parking. Does need a bar/restaurant. So few in the area. I do recommend stay read more

DONT DO IT!! WOW. SO BAD!! Cleaning staff is extremely rude and disrespectful. Yelling back and forth to each other at the crack of dawn. This is NOT the peaceful retreat you are seaking. The complain to each other about the management and who they are allowed to work with. I can give you explicit details because I HEARD EVERYTHING FROM MY PILLOW!! And the BUGS!! Omg the bugs. The location is right on the water, which is wonderful, but this place is run like a side-of-the-road motel. We were told the place was pet-friendly and ordered a room with a balcony. Instead, when we arrived we were duped into staying in what I think is a converted utility closet that is very small. It is hard to move around and filled with a hodgepodge of ill-fitting furniture. You cannot even sit at the desk because the chair in the room is too large for the desk. The TV does not face the bed but faces a window so you can't even watch it comfortably. Plus, when we arrived the floor was covered with sand and hadn't been properly swept. Everything in this place is run down. When I asked for a different room I was told there was nothing they would do for us. There was a sign asking to leave a Trip Advisor review, so here it is. OK. This is a place where you need to know what you're looking for. If you want a high-end resort with all the amenities and activities, this is not that place. If you want to enjoy the beach and the island - and just need a nice place to sleep, this is that place. Amenities? Beach towels, bikes, kayaks, beach chairs, umbrellas, breakfast. All free. You could spend more money to stay in a fancier place, and still have to rent/buy all of that. Not here. The staff here was friendly. The location is great--right on the beach. The AC was cold, and the water was hot. Down side? The wifi was intermittent, the TV was confusing. The breakfast was all carbs, the balcony was tiny, and the room was oddly shaped. But - we weren't on Sanibel for wifi, TV, or the room layout. So, for us, none of this mattered. We'd stay here again! read more

Property is located right off the beach. Other than that the beach is very shelly and had a funky smell not like a nice ocean/sea smell. Stench could be from the red seaweed but not sure. Beds were ok til we noticed blood like stains on the floor. Could be from bed bugs. Had a full size fridge and stove. Our patio was screened in and had a "partial gulf view" but not like I imagined. Good location but I do not recommend this spot. I'm usually not anal or too picky about a spot but right here, I just can't look past. But they do have a nice little breakfast basket they drop off to you. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE!! Made reservations 5mos in advance. Called hotel DIRECTLY, talked for 30 min to verify everything, bc of wife knee surgery we had to have a ground floor room. We were told that we did , and they even reserved ocean front w/wrap around screen porch we were satisfied! We arrived and was told our room was the top floor gulf front( which would have been amazing if not for my wife's surgery) when I told and showed on my paperwork, the lady at the front desk what we reserved she just said she didn't have that room available. I was furious, I had made reservations 5mos in advance. She told me she didn't want us to stay if we were not going to be happy and she could cancel our reservation and we could go somewhere else! We would just lose our deposit. Of course this late there was no where to go and she knew it. I asked for the GM to call me he never did. Don't stay here too rd expensive and not worth it read more

Your room is Literally steps from the ocean. Nice small place. Friendly helpful staff. And when we were there the other guests we encountered were friendly as well. The room was clean and non smelly (huge plus). The little baskets for the continental breakfast were a neat idea. A small bottle and milk and oj are put in your room fridge everyday. They bring the kayaks and boards out to the beach for you. Lots of live sand dollars about 50 yards off shore. Don't take em. But they are cool to see living instrad of dead in a store. The pool was clean and there is a bin of toys and nets to scope up shells. Nice quiet place. Would go back. read more

TIRED TIRED TIRED ..... it's like walking back to the 1970's without the charm . The staff that were there did their best , however it is very obviously short of qualified staff . You are instructed to move when the take in the beach chairs at 5pm ( sunset at 8pm ) .... Don't expect an early or late check out , the rooms were still being cleaned at 4pm while we waited and on the flip side we when asked if we could extend check out by 2 hours until 1pm were told it was a $50 charge , which sums up how cheap this place is . Until they renovate and change the management , forget this place and stay at the Marriott! (It's interesting that they make a big deal about the nesting turtles yet hand out plastic straws in your " breakfast basket " every day ...) read more

The grounds are very nice and it is in a great location right on the beach. Out room for as not cleaned everyday and towel and sheets changed every other day unless you let them know. Can I give a 6-Star rating?!?! The stellar customer service at this hotel makes an already good thing even better! The rooms are SO clean, and you are only steps away from the gorgeous beaches of Sanibel (See Also: Beach towels, umbrellas, and loungers are included in the price of your stay!) or a fresh dip in the resort's pool! This is a really great little hotel! Right on the beach! I booked this hotel on hotels.com for a special the rate was great (September has amazing rates for FL hotels!) It was only $120 including taxes and fees a night. I got there at about 4pm on saturday, just staying one night for my birthday for a relaxing and fun "staycation". The front desk area was quaint and the woman at the front desk greeted me warmly with a smile! There were 2 other hotel staff women in the front office as well and they were also extremely friendly and even complimented my hair (so sweet!) When the woman at the front desk heard it was my birthday she even gave me an upgrade, which was amazingly kind! The room was great. There was a nice kitchen area with a little dining room table with 4 chairs a mini stove and oven, sink microwave and a big fridge! All stocked with essential kitchen utensils (awesome for someone who wants to save by cooking or entertain guests while on vacation!) The room had 2 queen beds and was very spacious and clean! Nice sized TV with a DVD player (we brought a movie so that was excellent). A nice little vanity area was right next to the bathroom which had a shower/tub and was also very clean and tidy. To top it off there was a screened in patio with 2 chairs and a side table, which was lovely for listening to the waves a night time but without the worry of beach bugs and critters! The location is great! Right on the beach! The pool ws very clean and well maintained the hotel had FREE bikes you could rent, free chairs with umbrellas on the beach and in addition to standard pool chairs the pool also had 10+ wooden chairs with comfy yellow cushions and matching umbrellas! Walking distance to Doc's beach restaurant and driving distance to lots more! At night you can see the milky way! There is little to no light pollution so you can see all of the stars! Magical! Next time I want a staycation this is the place i'm coming back to! A new favorite for sure! read more

This is such a cute little hotel. This hotel was a lot better than we thought. It was decently priced, the room had a mini kitchen; and every day the housekeeper brought a basket of breakfast for your next day (bagels, yogurt, cereal, milk, oj, coffee, granola bars) that was enough for the number of guests. The property was well taken care of. It has a big pool, great room on the beach with lounge chairs the staff would set up and take down every day, they even had beach towels at the front desk for you to use. They have kayaks and paddle boards available, however they were being repaired while we were here. They offered for us to go down to their sister property, however we were not able to make it there due to the wedding we were here for. I would definitely recommend this hotel. read more

I cannot wait to return! This little hotel is directly on a private beach which means tons of peace and quiet with loads of sunshine. The hotel puts out beach chairs and umbrellas every morning, but be sure to put dibs on one early because they go FAST! The hotel had a great pool, shuffleboard and tennis courts. They also provided free bikes for guests that want to explore the island. Kayaks and fishing gear are available for rental. The room was clean and comfortable. It included a full kitchen and all cooking and dining utensils. The room also had a lanai that overlooked the pool which was a lovely place to drink a morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine. The sunsets on sunset beach are to die for! All in all a fantastic hideaway. I am already planning my next trip! read more

This is a run down motel with nice toiletries. All of the free tours and amenities they advertise are not at this property. You have to drive across the island to another resort. The WiFi was about the worst I have experienced anywhere, so don't plan to get any work done. The free bikes are in pretty poor condition. We arrived to our room and unfortunately we were disappointed. The room had a moldy smell, and stained carpets/furniture. The worst part was that we noticed the mattress had been flipped over so we removed the sheets to flip it right side up to find a small dead cockroach and more stains on the mattress. We immediately went back to the office to request a refund. However the staff was understanding and apologetic and issued our refund without a problem. read more

We had been staying in Key West and had our return flight home from Fort Lauderdale so we decided to drive down to Sanibel ..might as well make the best out of the situation. We found this hotel via our Garmin and what a great find. This place is a gem! The staff was very understanding about our situation, gave us a great room for a great rate, told us to just let them know if we needed anything or needed to extend our stay. The location of this hotel is great right on West Gulf Drive. Right on the beach, great room, large screened in balcony. Nice kitchen and bathroom as well. The hotel property is very pretty and the ocean views were beautiful. Nothing can beat the sunsets that you can view from their beach and the shelling is great as well. One suggestion though , although they have free bike rentals for hotel guests, the bikes are in very bad shape. We took a ride through JN Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge and i think we got the only two bikes that were in good enough shape to ride. That being said , this was a great hotel, great location and we will definitely be going back. read more

Excellent service, the staff went out of their way to help us with what ever they could. They offered plenty of free services such as bikes, towels, grills, beach chairs, kayaks and hammoks although the bikes were a bit run down. They provided a breakfast basket every morning that included pastries, bagels, apples, yogurt, milk and oj not bad at all for being free. Our room was very clean and we didn't find any bugs anywhere in our room. There was a full kitchen including most utensils you'd need. The pool was great!!! And heated!!! A huge plus :) Very close to a nice beach with a view from our screened in lani. Honestly my biggest complaint was that the pillows were too soft lol read more

PROS: friendly staff, nice grounds, direct beach access, complimentary beach gear (chairs, umbrellas, kayaks, SUPs) and the young man who sets all the beach gear up is like the energizer bunny from dusk til dawn! CONS: Noseeums - little biting insects that tore me up in the evenings. Obviously nothing to do with the Resort but do take bug spray if you go. They're on most of the island from what I hear. DO NOT stay in ROOM 102 if you do go to this place - it was repulsive! Bloody, dirty patio door drapes, dirty and outdated chairs, dirty room in general (floor, corners, doors, carpet). Old janky glass patio-type table that needed painted (REPLACED) HVAC loud and seemingly on its last leg. WORST OF ALL there was a funk to this room that was so disappointingly nasty we had to wash all of our clothes twice when we got back home, keep all of our luggage, shoes, etc out in the garage for a week and felt like we smelled like it (and kept smelling it for days after we left). Mad at myself for not asking for another room. I said something to the front desk and they gave the typical answer for older, tired beach resorts, "that's just a byproduct of being by the water (sea) and from the high humidity". BS! Will NEVER stay here again! Should've paid a little more elsewhere as this place not worth the relatively high price paid. read more

This company left us stranded upon arrival. We made reservations in October 2019 for a stay 2/28-3/1/2020 through weddingwire but the hotel refused to honor the reservation due to the discounted price. The front desk workers seemed to try to help but only made matters worse as we went back and forth with the wedding wire booking agents for 4 hours. Ruined our entire first day of a quick weekend trip to celebrate a friend's wedding. Thankfully weddingwire was able to relocate us to another hotel on the island no thanks to sunset beach inn. read more

Disappointed with our stay here. The front desk staff were friendly which gets them a one star review. Otherwise the room we were given was outdated and I immediately noticed the moldy smell walking in. It was a complete difference from the rooms at the Sundial Resort which we visited friends at and were airy and clean. I wish we'd spent the extra bucks and stayed there instead. We used some of the bikes on one evening only because most of the tires lacked air and definitely needed some repairs. We also used the pool which had a lot of bugs and leaves floating inside. The ground around the pool was very dirty so you had to keep your sandals handy. Then came the housecleaning. Years of traveling I've never encountered such awful service. We went for a morning walk along the beach and as we're getting back to our room the housekeeper says she was just about to clean our room. An inconvenience since we're just about to get ready to go back out but we said ok go ahead. We waited outside on some lounge chairs for about 30 minutes while she cleaned and while she was also on her cell phone talking. When we went back she said she couldnt touch our bed because we had our belongings on it. Well obviously we hadn't expected to have the cleaning yet so we didnt put away our belongings we were just about to take out again. Overall no cleaning was done to the room and we wasted 30 minutes waiting for nothing. This seems to be the norm at this hotel. I would never recommend this place to family and friends. read more

This place is a dump! The website is very deceiving and I was extremely disappointed with booking here. The room was dirty, and there were BED BUGS!! There were holes in the towels and blood stains on the sheets! The entrances to the beach are blocked off, so you have to go the the hotel next door to get on the beach. The tide is so high, the waves crash right up the beginning of the beach, so there is no room to lay out. The bikes were the only positive. read more

We stayed here for an extended weekend and even tho the weather was still windy and cool from hurricane sandy, we had a lovely time. Our flight was cancelled home and the hotel was more than accommodating our situation. The room was clean, the view from the balcony was such a welcome change of scenery from our Brooklyn kitchen. The staff was super helpful in telling us where to go and what to do and who has the best dinners. When the weather warmed up we took full advantage of the heated pool and did some shelling. Yes some hardened city folk can bend over and scour the sand for shells and enjoy it. Sanibel is amaze-balls. We will definitely be back there and to this hotel. Highly recommend. read more

We were very happy with this hotel. We had a 100 level room. It was quiet and very clean. The cleaning staff was attentive and friendly. The pool was enormous. I've never seen a hotel pool this large. It was also like stepping into bath water. Warm and relaxing. The only problems we encountered was that you could not plug in to many of the outlets. They did not handle dual plugs. Also, our lampshade was covered in mold on the inside. These were the only two minuses. However, I would stay here again. You are right on the beach, the room was clean, the staff was friendly and the beds comfy. read more

It's run down, damp and smells like cigarettes and pee. Sure it's right on the beach but $1200 for three nights! Ridiculous! Great location on a great beach with tons of shells and they have a nice pool. The rooms are pretty good in size and clean. The only issues I had with this place are that the doors were very hard to open with their key cards, took on average 10 tries before getting in each time. Had to leave a day early due to our 11 month old son getting a bad sunburn. We booked thru Travelocity and when we returned home contacted them to see if we could get a refund on the 1 night we didn't use and they said they would have to contact Sunset Beach and confirm with them that we left early and then they would refund us the 1 night but when they called and spoke with someone named James he said it wasn't their problem and hung up, so therefore no refund for us. Now about the inn itself. The room was terrible, the carpet was dirty, the bathroom moldy and the a/c very noisy. There are so many nice places on Sanibel to chose from so stay away from this run down over priced place. Another thing we didn't like was for a place that has over 50 rooms they only have about 10 sun umbrella's and 20 chairs on the beach, most quests were never was able to get any. This place needs to be updated because right now it's so run down it's not worth staying there even at $50 a night. read more

I was here two years ago and loved it!! When my husband told me we were staying there again, I was so excited! But the room was completely different!! We didn't have the kitchen or portch like we had last time. We had room 108 which was literally built in the parking lot. We could not open the windows because we would be face to face with people parking. The room was so small. Honestly, if you stay make sure you stay in a suite and not a guest room. read more

Definitely a good value for a hotel next to the ocean with a great pool! We booked a garden room that was pretty huge with 2 queen beds, a kitchen and a screened balcony. Stay away from the Sanibel rooms, they are in the basement! We stayed on a weeknight and paid just over $100. The breakfast is not great, (muffins and Little Debbie type pastries), just get your coffee fix and then go find a good breakfast on the island somewhere. Don't waste your time with the "free bikes" they offer. They are pretty terrible and most were broken or had flat tires. They do put 6 umbrellas with chairs out on the beach every morning, but people get up very early to claim them and keep them all day. Good luck with that! haha All in all, I would stay there again. Clean, spacious, friendly staff and great location on the beach. The pool was nice and very clean. Would have tried it out if we had more time. read more

Amazing. Stay here! It's the cheapest hotel for the amazing location. Right on the beach. They have complimentary beach chairs and umbrellas and kayaks and bike rentals. They have microwave fridge coffee maker hair dryer and toaster. They have laundry room that takes quarters and they sell the soap stuff. Best complimentary breakfast I've ever had. My room the sanibel room was big with a desk and a table and another table and chair. Oh and a DVD player. And the shampoo,conditioner, and lotion bottles are huge. The beach has so many shells if you don't collect them then they will just breakdown and become part of the sand so have fun! The waves are pretty strong here so if u have kids take them down to the public beach where they can have a safer time cuz not only are the waves soft Bt the kids can go out farther without it getting deeper. Bt if it's just the grown folks then stay on the private beach no need to be with the crowd cuz there will be no one else in site in the afternoon it'll be like your own private beach which is nice. The sunset won't appear over the ocean so if that's your thing go to the northern part of captiva island. I wish I would have known. $6 cash only toll to get on the island. If u forgot some beach stuff buy it before u get only the island cuz it's very expensive. Everything closes at 10pm. Anyway great stay great service I will definitely be back! read more
