Most amazing hike ever!! We took the trailhead right after the lighthouse overlook and it was absolutely stunning!! Take the trail that goes to the right for ocean views! The thick foliage reminds me of the hikes we took in Hawaii. So pretty!!

There are three state parks a short distance apart that may be accessed a short drive from Coos Bay off US 101 with the first being Sunset Bay. We stopped for the view of the sandy beach and sea cliffs.

Lucky rain-free sunrise at their beach!

Campsites come with enough space for 1, maybe two small cars. Nice privacy from trees and bushes. Picnic table and fire pit. Careful booking during wet season. Our site A38 was flooded, had to stay in A36. No "pad" to prevent the flooding. Luckily we were the only people camping then so it was easy to move sites and camp host didn't mind. Both are also very close to the main road. Lucky for us, we came at a low traffic time but summer time may be a hassle. We fit our 2 person tent well still close to the table though. A larger tent may require moving the table, if it moves. The location is spectacular. If you go down the road maybe 1/10 of a mile, they have beautiful cove beach access. Great for sunrise and sunset! The cove also keeps it warmer during the winter months. We didn't explore much of the town, we just traveled the coast during the day. If leaving your campsite for any amount of time, be sure to lock it up!!! Theft is an issue with camping in general but particularly in this area. A state trooper stopped us to warn us and check a description of someone he thought he caught. I'm sure this addressed by local police. We felt safe and had no issues whatsoever. Overall we had a great time but summer may be a better time to visit. Although we have the feeling is probably extremely packed which may limit the "camping" joys of getting away. We stayed for 2 days and only came to the campsite after dark so read through other reviews too :)

Everybody enjoys Sunset Bay State Park!

What a stunning place to watch the sun set over the Pacific! Great beach, lots of tidepools, and generally plenty of room for the number of people who frequent the place. After more than 30 years living in the area, I'd have to say, beach visits more often land us at Sunset than perhaps any other place. It has great parking, restrooms, and plenty of beach to wander on. Nice place for a family picnic, or just an evening stroll on a magnificent beach. For those who enjoy photography, this particular cove offers unlimited photo ops. Never been there when it wasn't simply... stunning! Okay, I guess I've been there a time or two when some "party" is going on and folks have gotten a bit unruly. However, it didn't take long to control, since the parks along Arago are very well patrolled. You'll enjoy your time here! I'm sure of it!

Just got home from spending 3 nights here, after a few days exploring the redwoods of NoCal. Sunset Bay is a nice State Park, the Park Rangers we're very nice and friendly. The showers/restrooms are a bit outdated but that was fine by us as we were just based here and were gone all day hiking and exploring. We will definitely come back in the future. It was quiet by 9:00 each evening which was awesome.

Stayed here recently to go to shore acres for their Christmas lights! Went hiking on one of the trails here and it was beautiful. My -1 star deduction is mainly for the camping area. Some of the camping spots are very close to each other and I think this could be a much bigger issue if it were summer. The yurt that we stayed in was slashed all the way through by the lock and it was just taped over. Didn't really make me feel safe leaving anything in there.

We stayed Insight D30 very quiet close to clean bathrooms and showers. The camp host sells firewood and fire starters. Close walk down to the beach cannot beat this part. Also close to Trails that lead to other great spots. Would not be disappointed in this part.

I am a local, so I tend to forget how lucky we are to be surrounded by such beauty. This is definitely a tourist spot, but incredibly beautiful and great nonetheless! If you go during low tide you can climb and walk out onto the rocks that are filled with tide pools. You can find sea anemones, crab, starfish, sea urchins, sea slugs, fish and more! The campground is nice, very shaded by trees and the spots are fairly separated, there is a giant spot up the road that can hold up to 75 people for camping, it's very late and private and overlooks the ocean. Would be great for weddings or large party camping trips!

Place is beautiful if you go during the non stormy time of year. Beautiful views, love the long beach and exploring the rock structures.

Pretty beach. Small with easy access, some tidal pools when tide is low. Too many people during summer months.

Ask the Community - Sunset Bay State Park

    Is there wheelchair beach access?

No not really there is a parking lot that is fairly close but as for beach access there is not. Sorry for that but it is a really great place

We have a reservation in August for the campground, but it restricts you to 1 vehicle. We have to take two vehicles. Is there a place to park nearby?

Would depend what you mean by vehicle. if just a standard sized one, there is space for two; but you have to pay an extra fee--$5 I think--for the second vehicle.

The area has quite a few communities beyond the namesake Coos Bay, including North Bend, Cooston, North Bay, and others including Charleston. Charleston is a set of rolling highlands that separate Coos Bay from the ocean. So if you want ocean, go West! There you will find state beaches and the Bastendorff Park of Coos County. There is an overlook of the beach, down the cliff. To get to the beach, walk back down the road. There is a children's play structure, parking and a grassy area at the overlook. Continue up the hill for RV-type camp spots with water and power hookups and a bathroom structure. The individual camping areas are shaded, and carved from the brush, providing some privacy from adjacent campers. The group area is at the top of the hill and largely unshaded, grass covered and sunny when it's clear. Though there is not a view of the ocean from there or any of the camping spots, it can be heard. It's the gem of the park camping areas, with its own bathroom shower structure, clean and with a huge supply of hot water. There is also an electric cooktop, sink and kitchen counter under a roof with picnic tables for your group. Each camping spot has a fire grate, but bring your own cooking grate with a finer mesh to hold whatever you are grilling. Great and unobtrusive park staff. We had a great get-together here to honor a local fisherman friend lost at sea with 3 generations of families participating, from up and down the Western states, Coos style. We are all Oregonians. As a Portlander I honor all the people all over the state. I understand that they cut trees, graze cattle, grow crops, mine, fish, hopefully over the long term. We are all in it together. I like to support the small businesses when I get a chance to visit too. Like in Coos where fishing has had some tough times with the closure of the Sacramento River salmon seasons and some slim fish runs for the Klamath basin. Sounds like those fish are back strong this year. So thinking of all you in Coos, and encourage Yelpers to visit the Southern Oregon Coast and the small towns supporting its awesome oceanfront!

Charleston Marina is one of the top recommendations for crabbing from shore. It's easily accessed, spacious, and can be productive. I was amazed at how many people were hanging out trying their luck. We dropped our first crab ring, and after a few minutes we pulled it up and found a lot of crabs! None were keepers but it was so cool to know all of them were hanging out.
