Sunrise is one of the two independant gas stations in my neighbourhood that I like to go to (the other is Pronto). It seems to always have the cheapest gas prices; in fact, one of the owners once proudly told me "we have the cheapest gas in Austin." Usually there is a line for gas because Sunrise initally only had two pumps. After a renovation, they now have four so no more waiting (good times!). I'm adding on one star for that. Wish they had installed pay-at-the-pump, though. It's a slight hassle to go in, possibly wait in line to give them your credit card, go back out to pump gas, go back in and, by this time, for sure wait in line to pay out. read more

You complete me, Sunrise Super Stop 9. Sure you carry all the beer I love just like very other convenience store in town, but you're the only gas station on the planet that has all the fixings I need to make a wicked reuben sandwich at 1:00 am. Yes you are. So what if I have to pay $1 extra for organic salad mix and Odwalla carrot juice? You've got a Boarshead deli counter and I'd do worse things to not take a 1 hour hiking trip through HEB. What I'm trying to say is you had me at "roasted cashews." P.S: The counter guy wouldn't let me buy a bag of spinach that he said "didn't look fresh enough" so he went and got a better one for me. Then he carried everything to my car. It may look like a gas station, but I like to think of it as an International Drinking Paradise. What, with the array of flags hanging from the front and the cases full of every type of alchol-infused beverage one could hope to find in a gas station, I don't know what more I could hope for. But they are about three steps ahead of me on this one - in a true demonstration of consumer empowerment, they let you make mix and match six packs. And don't even get me started on the vast and exciting selection of chocolate, candy, and prepared foods. It's like the red-headed step child of Whole Foods and I like it. More than a mini mart, that's for sure! If you're looking for endless wine, beer, small flag, and chocolate selection then this is your store. For real. I was blown away by the selections! This is where I will be picking up drinks and snacks for those little impromptu friend gatherings I am so fond of hosting. This place will definitely have me covered. Living right next door to this gas station is HEAVEN. I agree with Nicholas B. in the fact that it's the Best. Damn. Corner store. This store has the largest selection of beer sold by the singles that I've EVER seen in a gas station. It might rival that of Central Markets, but I'm not really a beer drinker and solely go to look at the plethora of different labels. I really don't know how they do it, but the number of vendors they must have has to be in the high double digits. Not only is there a large variety of beer, they also have a vast variety of chocolate, local ice cream and gelato, candy, wine and household tools. Yes, household tools, from contracting belts and rope to teasing brushes for hair. From the corner store this used to be in 2005, it's a must, must to stop in and gawk at the assortment of items that are enclosed in this building. I am also a fan of the humor of the family that runs it when they asked me if they could get me a chair so that I could sit down while my eyes scanned away at all of the objects on the shelves. Sunrise is your run-of-the-mill neighborhood gas pump and convenience store. A quick-stop for many Hyde Parkers, I am grateful for Sunrise, but not entirely impressed. Like most corner stores, they have virtually anything you'd need (emergency or otherwise) at jacked up prices. The two gentlemen who run the store are often on their cell phones and are anything but friendly, but I can't complain because the damn place is always open. They have no minimum credit card purchase (thank you!) and they have a little side business of selling kegs at discount prices (thank you....i guess). Thank you, Sunrise, for accommodating me when I leave the water boiling on my stove to sprint to your counter for that $2 gallon of milk for my macaroni and cheese. I review sunrise, becuase it offers all the ammenities that a convenience store is supposed to offer. Most importantly they regulary stock Real Ale Full Moon Pale Rye. I also Appreciate the fact that they have a healthy functioning air compressor, albeit slightly overpriced at 75 cents. They are also supportive of local taco vendors who operate out of their parking lot. Gas there is nto too ridiculous either. read more

Behind an unassuming facade lies what is possibly the greatest convenience store in the world, and definitely the most eclectic. You'd drive past it a dozen times as it looks like the most generic inner-city Shell gas station you've ever seen. You might notice the low gas prices or the signature flags out front, but you could easily miss it on your way to something else. Even if you stopped to get gas, there's nothing to lead you think you might need to go inside. But you'd be mistaken. Your first tip is how busy this store is, all hours of the day and night. The gas prices are good, but they're not that good, you know? Your first impression on walking in is that the store seems little cramped and you can't see it all. There seems to be stuff everywhere, packed from floor to ceiling. Take the time to look closer, and you find that along with the Milky Way bars, there's all sorts of gourmet chocolate bars. Every brand of Haribo product. Austin nuts. Every sort of weird premium food you can imagine. Premium cigarettes. Obviously, this is a store for more discriminating tastes. The fountain drinks aren't even Coca-Cola or Pepsi, they're Maine Root full sugar sodas. But then, on your right is the holy grail. A seeming never ending wall of every type of beer you can imagine, plus an impressive wine selection to go with it. You name it, they have it, and I'm not kidding. The beer selection exceeds even that of The Flying Saucer. Best of all, they're all available as singles -- never again do you need to waste a bunch of money buying a six-pack you'll never finish. Every time I go in this store, I get lost and I end up finding some treasure I've never seen before, or a curiosity I wonder how it landed there. It's truly the Toy Joy of gas station stores. As I walk through the aisle, I am half-expecting the curtain to rise and see a little man walk from behind the curtain and say, "I AM THE WIZARD OF OZ!" I don't know how they're doing it, but the mix and match 6 pack of your choice, international cheeses, crackers, snacks, and the occasional need for a screwdriver or usb cable, they've got it all here. I had to look up the name to post this review because my friends and I all refer to it as "The Best Gas Station in the Universe." Directions: 1. Walk in front door; turn right. 2. Think, "wow, this is an impressive wall of beer." 3. Think, "oh god when I turn the corner there's even more beer." 4. Slowly realize that you quite possibly have never seen this much great beer and wine in one place. They stock everything. You could quite possibly go a decade without drinking the same thing twice. Sam Smith's oatmeal stout? Check. Trappist ales? Check. Everything Left Hand? Check. Those weird beers you only want to get because of the comical/sexual names? Check. Extensive (though not quite as impressive) wine selection? Check. Light beer selection so tiny you can tell they're sending a message? Check. Easy mac? Check. I think they sell gas too. read more

A-m-a-z-i-n-g. It is a wonderland right down the street. Who would've thought I'd stop in for decently priced gas and come away with that candy bar? The people that work there are so friendly and it's fun just wondering around in there. You might be in trouble if you want to just stop by for a quick in-and-out, though. read more

This place is fantastic. It's like a splash of New York in the middle of Hyde Park, which is exactly why I love it. First, cheap gas. That's why there's sometimes a line for it. Tends to be at least ten cents cheaper than anywhere else. Secondly, you can mix and match your own 6-pack of beer, choosing from a gigantic selection of brews from all around the world. My guy goes CRAZY every time he goes into the store for that reason. Third, fantastic selection of wines, chocolates, and various specialty items. Finally - and most importantly - the service is amazing. I always chat with the owner, who is both friendly and hilarious, and I'll probably keep going back long after I leave the neighborhood just for that reason. Holy crap. They just basically ordered every beer the distributor would sell them. They have some of the oddest things like wrenches. They have 2 foot long wrenches. Why, I don't know. But who cares!
