During this time, there were two executive directors who came and went. The more recent one lasted over 2.5 years. She was a pathological liar who stopped showing up to work on a regular basis about half way into her tenure. Everybody she hired was either related to her or a friend of hers, so there was no accountability. Residents were regularly neglected, physically as well as emotionally. I informed her boss about it in January '24, and her boss' boss (!) in October '24, but she lasted all the way through December '24. In between January '24 and October '24, when my mom left, there were numerous phone calls, Zoom meetings, and in person meetings with the Executive director's boss and other concerned family members. We were always promised that things will improve, but they never did. It's worth noting that the place is particularly awful for wheelchair bound residents, as I found out during my mom's last 5 weeks there. Nobody ever wheels them around the beautiful garden, as grossly misrepresented in the video on the main page of the Summerfield website. If they're lucky, they will be taken to the activity room, but often they are just left behind. Many families hire a private caregiver for their loved ones in Summerfield, but even those have all left in disgust. As the saying goes, "a fish rots from the head down". ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PLACING YOUR LOVED ONE IN SUMMERFIELD: Be aware that many of the reviews are written by Summerfield Employees and folks who just came in for a visit.

She has been here since August of 2023 and our family has been very pleased with her care. The facility is relatively small, secure (locking gates and door to public areas), and I am not worried at all about Mom wandering out. The staff is very loving, caring, and attentive to mom's needs. I've also had the pleasure to dine with her several times and the food is always very very good! The facilities are clean and well maintained, and there is a lovely activities room and backyard/patio area. I can't say enough about how kind and accommodating the staff and management have been. I have an uncle who spent a lot of time with her daily, into the evenings, and he also raved about how wonderful my mom is cared for. As her care and medical needs have increased, we recently brought in hospice. They also commented on how much the med tech knows about my mom, and were impressed. Hospice and Summerfield are now working together to make the rest of mom's days as comfortable as possible. Is it perfect? No assisted living facility is ever perfect. But when there are issues (room needs cleaning, for example) it has always been addressed quickly. The staff is prompt at calling me when there is an issue with mom. The med techs and caregivers usually know off the top of their heads, what kind of day my mom is having. If there's been a shift change, whomever I ask always looks up the med tech notes and lets me know how she's been that day. We have many family members visit Mom, and they are always welcomed and never rushed out or made to feel obtrusive or in the way. In fact, lots of love and visits are strongly encouraged, and the staff is always so accommodating! There are many different types of facilities in San Diego area, and I recommend that Summerfield be on your list to check out if you have the need for memory care assisted living for a loved one. They are very competitively priced, and with the wonderful care, good food, activities, and kind people, this place is definitely worth a look.

We were hopeful it would be a good fit and after almost a month, Westmont surprised us by exceeding our expectations. The health and resident providers are caring and incredible. Concerns are addressed immediately. Donelle the executive director,and the entire Westmont team- especially Stephanie -have provided the highest level of customer service to both the resident and their families. So far, Mom says the dining room produces tasty and nutritious meals. The dining staff tries hard to please. The common areas are lovely and always clean. The hallways smell great and fresh on our regular visits. However, the best part for our mom is the combination and superior quality of the resident activities. This combined with the Westmont community have made a tremendous difference in keeping Mom engaged and busy. We didn't realize how much mom needed this aspect. Living here seems to have cured her loneliness that had crept in the past year and that she tried to hide from us. She continues to be very involved with her family, but now she has the much needed social connections without the increasingly strenuous effort it took on her part when she lived alone. Live music, field trips, holiday celebrations, current events -wow! Lots going on...Every. Single. Day. Fellow residents have welcomed her and the staff encourages interactions. I knew I had found the place for her after touring the facility and meeting with Kitty, the Community Relations Director, and Randal, the Executive Director. This is a fairly new building (just a couple of years old) and it has a lot of light and lovely artwork in all of the hallways, where music is often playing. There's a fireplace and grand piano in the spacious entry room (it's so much more than a lobby)! The apartments, (studios, and, 1 and 2 bedrooms) are good sizes and have high ceilings, kitchens, full-sized washers and dryers. The apartments and bathrooms also work with wheelchairs so your loved one can "age-in-place" if necessary. The Westmont of Encinitas staff and residents are friendly and kind. My mother has now been there for about a month and is happy there. My sister and I are relieved to have her in a place that is designed for assisting her as her needs increase and also for her to be in a place where she is safe and can make friends. The social element here is up to the resident to a certain extent. There are activities and outings, as well as dining, for social opportunities. Also in the building, there is a small indoor (very warm) pool, a courtyard, a movie room with large, comfy seats, a dining area, a recreation room for activities. There is also on-site physical and occupational therapy. When first working with Kitty on selecting an apartment, filling out forms, sending forms for others (ie: doctors) to fill out, I was overwhelmed. Kitty was so patient, kind, and accessible. She worked with me and my out-of-state mother and was always reachable or would get back to me within 24-hours. She also could always answer my questions... of which I had many! I've also noticed (and heard from my mom) that Randal, Anisa, Christine, and of course Kitty, will go to the lengths necessary for their residents to be happy and feel that they are HOME. They are all enthusiastic and ready to help with any issue big or small. It truly is impressive. I feel very fortunate to have found Westmont of Encinitas for my mom!

We looked at Carlsbad by the Sea, the Meridian San Marcos and Santianna by Oakmont. We landed on La Costa Glen. From the very beginning, La Costa Glen exceeded our expectations. The campus is beautifully maintained and feels more like a vibrant neighborhood than a "facility." What stood out most, though, was the staff. Every person we interacted with--from the sales team to the dining and activities staff, and the executive director - are patient, professional, and truly kind. They took the time to get to know my mom as a person, not just a resident, which gave our family tremendous peace of mind. My mother has settled in wonderfully. She has access to a wide variety of activities, social opportunities, and amenities. It's clear that residents are encouraged to live full, engaged lives, and the community has a positive, energetic atmosphere. Many residents in their 80s and 90s along with 70s, for which my mom is 76. As someone who lives nearby and visits often, I can confidently say that La Costa Glen feels like a place where seniors are valued and supported, not managed. My mom had been in home support care living at home for 10 years. I only chose RanchView after a long and dedicated search. My decision was wonderful and I can't recommend RanchView enough. RanchView staff is like family and the facility is our home. When I bring family members with me to visit mom, staff remembers them and also offers to help them to make their visit with mom more comfortable, such as sharing snacks or meals, or providing any type of comfort or conversation that makes their visit to my mom more enjoyable. Dealbreaker.... I will not have my mother's caregiver made to sit off to the side of the dining area like a second hand person...like an underling. Who is going to be upset if a patron has some help with them? La Vida should post their severe restrictions upfront so people in a very difficult time don't waste their time.
