I'm giving 4 stars because I love the Yummy Kitchen fast food counter inside Sunny. The staff are nice and friendly, the prices are quite affordable, tons of variety, and great quality for the price you are paying. My go-to favourites are the sweet and sour chicken, deep fried chicken wings, deep fried tilapia fish, and the vegetable fried rice. The Cantonese Chow Mein and the deep fried drumsticks are okay too but I had better. Every week they usually have Flyer Specials and In-Store Specials for some food items which makes it even more affordable. Overall, Yummy Kitchen is a great, affordable, and fast option for fast food! Definitely better than your typical Chinese fast food counters like Manchu Wok. read more

They're okay but they never seem to do a quality or best-before date compliance check on their products. Moreover, the food court isn't anything special. I would extend to say...don't eat there...it doesn't taste good at room temperature, cold, warm, or in any condition. It tastes best when you're not eating it to begin with. read more

But seems like this Sunny Foodmart trying to be a International Supermarket: Chinese, Indian, Filipino, Middle Eastern... You will find everything here... but not really anything that are really unique and interesting!! Maybe trying to have much a variety with different ethnic background makes stocking the shelf a challenge.. The usual hot table of Chinese food, Sushi Section, Dim Sum. Wow Jennifer K. is soo fast. She beat me to writing the first review. I added the business not long ago and she already went and reviewed it. I was here yesterday on the official grand opening. The soft opening was on June 6th and the official was yesterday. It was ridiculously packed..should have known its a Chinese thing. First impression when I went in was pretty bright. They had a variety of produces, price wise is very hard to tell at this point. I see some items that are less than Foody mart but some items more expensive than T&T. So I don't know how to rate that. For you all to find out by yourselves. I believe it's a business owned by Chinese and Indians. I saw them all in suits and walking together with a glass of champagne. who says chinese and Indians can't do business together? Russell...Lol... They have a halal meat section which is quite interesting becuz I usually only see halal sections in fridges not a department of halal. that's interesting. The usual pork dept, seafood dept., bakery and hot food sections all there. One extra thing is they have a deli counter which I like. This rating is for the sushi. I went there around 8:30pm just to see if they were clearing out the sushi. At this time, there was not much left except 2 platters of $11 rolls and sushi combo, and a few containers of sashimi. The platters were marked down like 70cents. I had a craving so, i picked one up. I asked if the sashimi had any clearance price on it, she said NO. I think if the sashimi doesn't sell, they keep if for the next morning.... hmmm. I'm not sure if sashimi that is cut and sitting there all day, would be fair to sell the following day at reg. price. Also, let me tell you that Sushi that you buy at the end of the day... taste like crap. You don't know how long its been sitting there... the rice gets hard and tasteless. Don't do it !! The produce is the best quality and tasting produce that can be found at an average grocery store in my opinion. There's a good variety & rarely disappoints. The rest of the store, however, lacks in variety. This place has a mix of Chinese & Indian cuisine based products. I believe since they went for a mix you can only find a couple of things per culture. There aren't much chips, snack variety, or frozen food. They do, however, have enough to be able to find food for a hot pot! I just can't ever find the drinks or snacks I like here. Their bakery is good, as far as the simple buns go. Your average Asian grocery store in East Markham neighbourhood. Opened six years ago, Sunny Food Mart has a wide variety of Asian cultural foods in fresh produce, halal meat, isolated fish area, bakery, ready to go eats, snacks, spices, etc. for a variety of Asian foods. I love purchasing their dried fruits here, it's about $2.99 for a pound of dried cranberries which is about $2 cheaper than the bulk barn next door. The produce here is fairly reasonably priced (not as expensive as T&T supermarkets, and even cheaper than Foody Mart). There's plenty of parking in this plaza and there's two doors for entrances and exits so in the winter you don't have to be in the freezing cold if you parked closer to one side than the other. read more

This is a review of the Markham Road branch of Sunny Food Grocery. There are only few things you would consider when rating an Asian Grocery: First is variety and freshness, close second is prices and third is cleanliness. Unfortunately, customer service will not be at par with your ubiquitous grocery chain like Loblaws, etc. (You can't expect much as the hardworking staff you bumped into like restocking clerks, butchers, etc. don't usually speak English and do not want to be disturbed at all). So, here you go: 1) Variety and freshness - Deserves a high rating like 3.5 to 4 but would not be at par with T&T or other larger grocery chain. The everyday kitchen staples like green vegetables, eggplant and tomatoes including fruits would greet you at the entrance. The fish and seafood section is not worth visiting unless you ran out of option. Meats have both the halal and regular but mostly stocked with pork, beef, lamb and chicken. This is an excellent store for South Asians and Middle Eastern shoppers. 2) 2.5 stars. Prices are relatively high compared to Walmart and Foody but a little bit less than if not comparable with T&T, particularly the vegetables and fruits. Prices of fresh meats vary but in most cases competitive. Fresh spices like mint, thyme, rosemary, etc are cheaper here compared to other stores. Frozen items are priced competitively. 3) 3 stars but trending downwards. Generally clean market area except the restroom where they have 1 common and gender-neutral, which is so so. Not the worse but certainly not the cleanest and driest. By the Chinese grocery standards, this is not the worse that you can find. Try the one at Foody and see if you can even touch the hallway leading to their washroom including the access door. A lot of shoppers are attracted to Asian groceries because of their hot food/ meals section. Sunny, at times, are better in taste (except for their noodles and sushis) and prices than Foody but not comparable to T&T which is among the best. They don't have BBQ and their fresh bread section has decent stock but nothing compared to T&T or Foody. The long and short of this is that you might want to have a specific shopping list when you visit them as you are a damn fool if you plan to have a one stop shopping trip when you grab a cart. read more

At first I was trying to find out who was saying it, until I realized it was a recording of some sort. The produce here, in my opinion, is more fresh than T&T or Foody, especially the fruits. They also have some huge discounts, for example boxes of Papaya for only $9.99 (I get them at Lucky for about $24.99!). I also like how they divided the sections, with the seafood section tucked around the corner of the store and the meat section neatly organized. They also have a nice food court section, with a wide variety of selections. The cashier lines, however, were disorganized. I did not notice an express section anywhere (though it might have been in the far corner of the store). The psychology of the store made everyone line up at the first cashier, with pretty much nobody in any of the middle counters at all! Also, the cashier I had was somewhat confused at some of the produce I bought...being unable to remember what the prices or the codes are. Avoid this place at all cost especially the fish department. Bought a fish for 8.88 per lbs. At check out, they charge me 10.98 per lbs. I ask why. They replied, because the fish is still moving, hence the higher price. But this is no where posted. Did they just make up the price on the spot. Another friend of mine also got over charged so much. I come here for 2 reasons. Their veggies and their beef ribs (uncooked! I cook them low and slow and they are amazing!). Unfortunately, everything else about this place is meh. Service is meh. Prices are mehh. Parking lot is mehmmmmmm. Shopping carts are mehhhh (so damn dirty). Selection is ok. I prefer Foody Mart, which is across from my house. I don't want to give any star actually, sunny at markham is nasty, no customer service at all, a stupid woman at the "customer center" doesn't know how to talk with people, she just knows how to "fight" with customer, but doesn't have good ground except being rude. The hygiene is a problem, the basket is always dirty, some area smell like "old socks" , and some meat, vegetables and fruits are not fresh at all, many fruits are gone bad inside and taste terrible, be careful they overcharge you also, I won't be surprised that they are losing more and more business. I will never go back, I will switch to No frills nearby or other chinese market, they are cleaner, fresher and have better price also. read more

There's a lot of Asian groceries in Markham... Maybe way too many. Sunny Foodmart took over the old Food Basics on Markham rd. & 14th Ave. This place is a bit unique and separates itself from the typical asian market. They have a halal meat section and a deli section. Their ready made food area have a good selection as well as their sushi area. Since it's new-ish (1 or 2 yrs) store, the place is quite clean and well stocked. There's lots of parking in the plaza, especially when Canadian Tire is closed. Something they are missing compared to Foodymart or Orientalmart is their barbeque section or the savoury buns... Once in a while I just crave for some cha siu or a bbq pork bun. I am here to review the cooked food meals area. They used to be very good about 4-5 years. We went quite often. They had more variety, and was less salty and more delicious than places like T&T and Foodymart's cooked meals. My bf and I haven't gone there for about a year now, so we went back, and we noticed how there was like no one, thinking it was odd, cause usually it's very busy anytime of the week. We bought a whole bunch of things, after eating some items, and we had a major stomach flu for like 2 weeks. It was unbearable! I think their food isn't fresh anymore because of low turnover. The meals seems ok at surface level when you eat it, but the aftermath is not pretty. I'm giving it a 2 stars because they used to be good at one point (customer service is still good), and I really don't know about their grocery areas which I haven't bought from before. read more

Huge Asian supermarket with a variety of fresh produce and packaged goods from all over Asia, the Middle East and the Caribbean. I noted that another reviewer mentioned they have only "Chinese & Indian" items but this is a gross over simplification. The fresh produce is very good and contains all sorts of exotic fruits and even green veggies which are tough to find. The pantry items are my favourite part - from spices, to dried mushrooms, hundreds of varieties of sauces and pastes etc. I love it. If it's not at Sunny, it does not exist. I cannot comment on the meat and fish section as I usually find it overwhelming and intimidating to order from those counters but they seem to have tons of stuff too (including a halal butcher). In terms of their take-out food, I AM IN LOVE. The sales are amazing! A whole carton of noodles for one dollar!? YES PLEASE. The sushi and bubble tea always seems to be on sale as well and it does not disappoint. On 12th September 2015, I purchased two packets of Deep make Multi-grain chips from your 7700 Markham Road location . The purchase was made using my credit card. I destroyed the receipt as it was of no use to me. Today, when I opened one of the packages, it smelt very profoundly putrid. My wife ate a piece of it and she vomited. Immediately I rushed to Sunny Foomart at Markham Road from where they were purchased and talked to the counter girl at the Returns and Exchange counter. The girl was very rude in her attitude and asked for the receipt. When I told her that the receipt was not available but I had the reference number and the date when the purchase was made, she said that we were late by a week in returning and said that even if the manager was called, he would not take the products back. She refused to listen to us and became oblivious to our presence. Our intention was not to claim the refund since the value of the products was too low but we wanted the staff to realize the quality that we found in that package. Some one can fall sick using this type of quality and if a child happens to eat it, it may result into undesirable consequences. We left both the packages at the counter stating that we were not in need of them. The counter girl did not have the basic courtesy to ask us to wait for the manager so that we could talk to him/her. Please take up the matter with your Markham Branch and check the quality of that product to avoid any untoward incidence. read more

I noticed this new establishment quite a while ago.., I will simply put it this way, it's worthwhile giving it a try! The parking lot is easy due to location, plus the lot of Staples across the street, it's right on Markham Rd.(right at the intersection between Markham rd. & 14th) , and has ShopperDrugMart & McD/ Can.Tire close to it - great location! I'm thankful for it serving cooked meals/ Fastfood session, easy for a single like myself. Sunny the interior strangly enough feels like a combination of Foody (both the Warden one and the Hwy.7 one), Loblaws (!?), T&T, and Food Basics. Plus the fact that there's an equal mix of Chinese, Mandarin, Shudra, Guyanese (couldn't tell all), like another reviewer's post - this place does indeed giving me a good vibe shopping, considering the neighborhood and ethnicities. Things are working! Didn't got the time to purchase more goods, though have seen people picking up different stuff including the bubble tea, so I'll be heading back shortly after. It's a welcome addition to the Scarborough/ South Markham regions. More of these markets and Asian plaza establishment offer wonderful varieties to the otherwise plain old big-box type retails and cuisines(all those food courts with their fried foods...)! Ultimately, these stores really work depending on the locations they're in. For food court food, seriously, I recommend the Galleria at Steeles & Yonge, but that will be in my later reviews. I went to Markham Sunny Foodmart this morning and grabbed a few items without a basket. I went to the express lane to pay. The customer ahead already paid and the belt's empty; so I immediately put the items on the conveyor. Well, after I did so, the cashier named Jenny lecturing me using an annoying and unhappy tone saying "next time you have to wait till we tell you to put your things on the belt". I had no idea so but is it a big mistake? Not sure how the cashier can be so impolite and not even treated me as a customer but sounds like I was her kid. Even it was due to pandemic but can they not be more polite and use a softer tone to inform a customer of their new policy ? A supermarket is not just selling groceries but service should also be part of the package, correct ? Called them and complaint. So, beware if you are going there during this time and be ready to be treated like someone's kid when you cash out. read more

Selection is more towards South Asian than East Asian. I also noticed the shoppers were predominantly South Asian. Compared to Sunny in Eotbicoke, this one seems a bit dirty and grotty. Produce was also not as nice as their Etobicoke store. Also, as they cater to local demographics, this one does not have a Latino food section and not as many Caribbean products. Of course, like in Etobicoke, they have a good selection of Indian and Pakistani food. read more

Very clean grocery store compared to Foody Mart and Oriental. They sell halal meats and they also have a bakery, deli and hot food section. Their Hot food items are usually a hit or a miss, but generally not great. Their groceries are fresh, and you can usually score some great deals under the tables for reduced produce which are still really fresh to me. Ok The Big Hype about Multicultural foodmart ! Sunny FoodMart Markham,their produce is good but honestly their service blows, I was there and wanted to buy Frozen fish. After standing near the Halal counter for almost half an hour I gave up. I later asked the girl at the checkout and she told me that I actually have to line up and pay for it first and then take it the counter ( don't know which one I'm supposed to take to !!!) to have it cut, there is absolutely no instructions near the fish station as to how an I supposed to get it cut or I actually can't have it cut at all ! The people in the Halal Section seem like they work for the govt. They look at you but don't even ackowledge you, as if to say I don't care about you, don't even bother to ask you if you've taken a token for the counter or provide any sort of assistance. I go to the No Frills nearby and there the employees will not even let you stand for ten seconds before they ask you if you need any help. Same goes for the T&T at Markam, When a businesss is opened they have a responsibilty to the public and the customers and if they are too busy then need to staff appropriately. In two occasions I've bought fresh fish from Sunny and both have been bad, I always buy my fish from T&T and have never once experienced either a bad service or poor quality. Best tip is to shop around and pick the best while being beware of displays and merchandising tricks. A cursory look at the hot food section reveals a clean and well maintained kitchen and birthday cakes that are tastefully decorated. On the downside, gone are the days of the initial good bargains and shining floors. There is no doubt that Sunny Foodmart is nice/clean with food around the world but the customer service was the worst I have experienced at this store. I live very close to this place and I have been a regular customer from the time it opened. The cashier and customer service staff doesn't know their job at all but they are good in arguing with customers. Out of 10 times, there were atleast 6 times where I was overcharged. Let me give you a few scenarios where I was overcharged. One day, I bought 5 rice bowls that was on special for 99cents each. I went home and found that the store charged me $1.99 each. On onother ocassion, I bought chicken that was on special, I don't remember the price but again I noticed I was overcharged $8.00 when I got home. Recently, I bought a bag of brocolli that was on special for a dollar but I was charged a total of $4.65 which was the regular price of $1.70 per pound. I ultimately got a refund but t it was a hassle going back twice. I just want to warn people to double check their bills before leaving the store and not go through what I have went through. Yesterday around 7pm , at my regular trip to Sunny, spent $65 but had the experience where I will think twice before entering the store again. The cashier ran out of paper and somehow she couldn't reprint my receipt. With the bad experience especially with overcharginging, I insisted on a receipt. A customer service girl took me to customer service desk . It was not the regular girl that I used deal with. I waited for atleast 15- 20 minutes just to get my receipt. I could see it clearly that this girl was either new or she didn't know what she was doing. Her computer monitor was facing towards me and all she was doing for that longest time was moving her mouse around and clicking on a few different screens. My kids were getting bored and while trying to play with them, I accidently kicked the small wooden door on the side of the customer service desk and the girl turned around and looked at me as if she was going to kill me. When I asked for an update, she started yelling at me saying that I can refund everything. Why would I want a refund after spending an hour picking up my grocery. She then started arguing with me, insulted me in front of my 2boys and made my 63 years old mother wait so long just for a receipt. I am in customer service myself and I know how important it is in this modern world. Customer service is the key to the success of every businesses and Sunny will definitely lose customers if there are no improvements in their service. They should take some lessons from Markham garage doors on Bullock dr. In Markham. I got my garage door replaced in June and they have provided the best job and service.
