Red bean bun
Kimberly H.

Small dumpling shop inside 99 ranch market. $1.99 each for a red bean bun & beef/onion bun. You order at the front. Red bean bun 2/5 - red bean was not sweet and the bun & filling was cold. Beef & onion bun 3/5 - was stored inside a styrofoam container and given to me. Yummy, but just not hot enough and it was a beef like patty that separated from the bun. L

The original flavor pork bao are fantastic: moist inside & the filling had good flavors. Chive & egg not as good. The wonton soup was ok, but def not as good as cantonese wonton soup

I've been coming here for baos. They have so many flavors to choose from. All baos are made fresh daily. You can actually watch them making baos at the restaurant. I liked the original pork baos. I will definitely go back to try more flavors.

Green Onion Pancake

Located inside 99 ranch market, we've always seen Sunny Dumpling House and made it a point to stop by to finally try some of their food. Inside is very unassuming with a small amount of tables. You get to see the workers pumping out all of the dumplings/baos. I love the fact that you can also buy some frozen to-go. The Beef & Onion bun was really flavorful and moist inside. The Chive & Pork dumplings were filling and delicious. I really liked the wrapper texture and thickness. The Dan Dan noodles had a perfect balance of szechuan pepper flavor. I prefer mine not too strong and so if you are really looking for that true numbing flavor, this might not be spiced enough. The Green Onion Pancake was flaky and chewy; perfect to munch on between our other bites of food. And lastly the Juicy Pork Xiao Long Baos were amazing and my favorite dish we got! So much flavor!!! For the price, convenience, and flavor, Sunny Dumpling House is the perfect spot to grab some quick eats!

Best pork hun and dumplings I could think of in the US and they're willing to try new things all the time. Only concern is the container they used for the take away. It's not safe to put steam hot buns in this materials. Surprised that no one brought this up for so long.

I honestly go here for just the pork buns (bao zi) - #1. My parents are huge fans of this place, and told me that the taste is very reminiscent of their childhood. They haven't been able to find the same taste in NY. I find the buns very tasty as well, and like to add a bit of sriracha to it. We don't come too often so it's pretty much a nice treat to grab. I had it once earlier this year as the remaining part of the last few months I have to monitor my blood glucose. Husband is a fan as well. Today I managed to make it here as I was picking up some groceries at 99 ranch. I'm in my third trimester - full term for those who don't know. It was very smooth to order, pay and get an already prepped box, and then go on my way. I prefer to come here when they just open as they usually make a plethora of their #1. My to go to order is just getting a box or two to go. They don't accept cash and only card. And this review is solely for their pork buns. I think they also stop making the pork buns later in the afternoon, but do recall my parents did make an order ahead of time to bring them back to NY. So possibly arrangements can be made if you wanted to pick it up for later. I do order in mandarin, so can't say much for the experience non-chinese patrons go through.

Pork xia long bao

I see Sunny Dumpling House almost every week while shopping at 99 and I am so glad we finally made a plan to eat there. The beef and onion bun was juicy and the bao was so soft. Green onion pancake came pre ripped up and I loved that detail. It was a little greasy, but it was still delicious. The wontons were filled to the brim and had great texture. The xia long bao were also packed with filling and soup and had great flavor. Dan Dan noodles were spicy but not too spicy, they fit in well with everything else we ordered and reheated well the next day as leftovers. I love that they sell bags of frozen dumplings and wontons for a reasonable price. I know where to go when I need some.

Fresh steamed Xiao long bao

Authentic and Full of Flavor! The buns were freshly steamed and served warm, with a clear view of the team working in the open kitchen. The cashier was friendly. We ordered the Xiao Long Bao, and it was delicious. It's a very casual, laid-back spot, perfect for a quick and satisfying meal.

Pork and Chive Dumplings

These were so freaking delicious!!! It's so unassuming, located in the corner of the 99 ranch. I got the pork bun and pork and chive dumplings. When I say these were gas, these were GAS!!! So flavorful, so tender, so perfect. The girl that helped me was also so so sweet!! I love that you can see the women in the back giggling together and making the dumplings fresh. Could not have asked for a better lunar new year meal.

My first time going into 99 Ranch in a while. I saw this dumpling place and decided to give it a try overall the food and quality was delicious. We got XLB and pork fried dumplings. I prefer the pork fried dumplings over the XLB. There was more broth in the dumpling but overall it was pretty good. I was very surprised and it was fairly cheap. The XLB for pieces was 1099 and the pork fried dumplings for 12 of them was 1399 overall give this place a try, wasn't too bad at all.

The best bao in the US! I am so tired of eating those frozen bao zi until I found this place. Their bun is freshly made daily. The congee is also NOT instant food, which is common in US. This reminds me the old days I lived in Beijing. The pickled vegetables and soy milk are also great!

Shrimp and pork panfried dumplings - yum!
Amber E.

I see this place nearly every time I shop at 99 Ranch, and finally had the chance to stop by. You can watch the dumplings and buns being made fresh from dough and toppings in the kitchen space behind the glass. I got an order of shrimp and pork pan-fried dumplings $15 for 12, and they were very tasty. Next time, want to try the scallion pancakes!

I've had Sunny Dumpling House bookmarked for a while, mostly because they sold frozen dumplings at a decent price, however I never came in. That is until recently. One thing to note is that they recently changed their menu, Many items are now made fresh in the restaurant and they have expanded the menu greatly. Anyone who says their items arrive frozen has not sat watched the dumplings being made. They do batch them, so not everyday the same dumpling is being made. I've watched this many times. You can see people who are lovingly folding the buns, The food, okay well I've been trying to get some new items, but I've definitely found my must haves. The pork bun is fantastic. Beware, it's not always served warm, so you may want to warm it if you are taking it to go. If you sit inside, they will warm it for you. My son is a picky eater and he loves these buns, it helps it's just pork and no visible veggies, so they are right up his alley. I've tried the pan fried pork dumplings as well as the pork and chive. Both are fantastic options. The green onion pancake is one of the best I've had, it is very crispy and flaky with lots of flavor. The wonton soup is great. My son and I ordered the large pork wonton and the small pork wonton version, both without the mini dried shrimp (sorry, not my thing). The broth was good, very basic but nice. The wontons were great. I was expecting the only difference to be the size, but they had different flavors in the pork filling and the wonton skin were also different. The small were more tender and yellowish an the large thicker and white. Both were good, just a matter of preference. I've also tried the Dandan noodle but this was probably the most underwhelming item. It definitely needed some kind of a sauce. I did appreciate it was not loaded with a bunch of fillers like cucumber. Today I tried the seasonal pork moon cake. Wow, I am blown away. The crust was more like a puff pastry that was super flaky and the meat was very flavorful. These are awesome. While they are not make fresh in store, they are made at one of their other 3 locations and brought down frozen. They are a must try item. All of the employees are very nice and welcoming. Ivy, who is usually at the counter is very sweet. This is definitely one of my new favorite spots. For easiest access, go to the back of 99 Ranch and park there and enter, it's right when you walk in on the right. Plenty of parking too!

Got the pork buns. Very nostalgic flavor and style. It's very hard to find this style of baos, so I'm glad we have this in SD.

Make sure they print out a slip as proof so you know your order was placed. As far as price, it ranges from $6.68 to $11.88. Average was $9.68 like the siu mai. That's $2.50 each! Price increase and quality went down. The har gow skin was thick, the siu mai was bland. Chicken feet was decent. It has free parking. Inside was bright and they have a private room.

Ordering is done via an ipad at the table but they're available for any menu questions and quick with water refills. Food is SO GOOD. You can really tell the dumpling wrappers (for dumplings, xiao long bao, and wontons) are handmade. They're more springy and al dente and beautifully wrapped. We ordered a ton of food and everything was really tasty I didn't react fast enough with photos. Xiao long bao are a MUST - and you gotta enjoy it with the vinegar and ginger! The cucumber salad is WAY better than ding tai fung's in both taste, texture, and portion! Chili oil wontons were big and deliciously fragrant, not spicy. Pan fried pork buns were crispy on the bottom with a soft and pillowy bread and juicy meat filling. We also got the combination fried rice which was beautifully golden eggy and full of meat & shrimp. The green beans were flavorful and not overly oily. Fried chicken wings were one of my favorites! Last but not least we also ordered the chonqing spicy chicken - not too spicy, full of numbing peppercorn goodness, fried lightly and very criispy. The restaurant is well decorated and clean, very spacious and good for groups. There's a cute gazebo table right at the front too. Plenty of parking in the plaza lot. . After some search on Yelp, we decided to try Eastern Dinasty on Convoy Street. Upon arrival, we knew the restaurant was legit when we saw shiny and beautifully roasted ducks dangling in a display box. Inside, it had a casual décor, with seating for 60 guests. The courteous waitress guided us to our table and brought the menu and water right away. For this visit, we ordered the following dishes: West Lake Minced Beef Soup: The portion was large enough for 6 people. The lightly starched broth was nicely seasoned with hint of white pepper. In the soup, there were bits of minced beef, chopped green onion, and stirred egg whites. The simplistic soup was warm, velvety, and pleasantly flavored. 3 Item BBQ Combo (House Special Chicken, Roasted Duck, and Pork Belly): The house special chicken was nicely steamed, lightly seasoned, and with beautiful gelatinous skin. The roasted duck pieces were plump, with crispy skin and succulent meat. The pork belly had crispy thick skin, and tender meat with nice rendered fat without being overly greasy. Walnut Shrimp: The portion was quite generous for the price. The lightly battered shrimps had a nice firm texture and were covered with mayonnaise and sprinkled with sweetened and crispy walnuts. What a beautiful blend of taste and aroma. Left the restaurant heart-warmed and extremely satisfied. Highly recommended.

Beef noodle soup - excellent flavor overall, including a strong broth and a nice, soft texture to the noodles. Out of the countless Chinese restaurants I've visited for beef noodle soup, this makes its way into the top three. 5/5 Lamb skewers - wayyyyy too dry. This is certainly not their specialty, and asking for extra cumin to sprinkle on the lamb did not redeem the firmness. I struggled to slide the meat off the skewer and ended up just eating it while still on the stick. 1.5/5 Fish fillet - so good. Easy to eat texture-wise. Caution -- a bit saltier than it looks. The bell peppers in particular were seasoned spectacularly. 4.5/5 Dry fried green beans - a delicious option for vegetables to add to the table. Most people will enjoy this one in my opinion. A bit more crunch than I expected, which is not a bad thing. 4/5 Double cooked pork - I've never seen it cooked this way, and am not a fan. I'm used to a more oily version of this dish. It contained a bunch of dried and crunchy... yams? Potatoes? Overall, the dish was mainly crunch with no flavor, and contained a relatively small amount of pork. 1/5

The decor is honestly one of the highlights, it's got this cool, atmospheric mashup of Hong Kong street food vibes and an old-school Shanghai saloon. The bar area was super lively, full of people grabbing drinks and Chinese food, which gave the whole place a great energy. As for the food, we mostly came for the Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings), but they were unfortunately a bit of a letdown. The meat filling wasn't very flavorful and the texture felt pretty rubbery. On the bright side, the Fried Rice was solid and hit the spot. We also tried the Kung Pao Chicken, but it felt more like the "old-school Chinatown" style I remember as a kid as it's very heavy on the sweet fried bean paste and a bit too sugary for my taste, rather than being authentic Chinese. The service was impressively swift; even with the crowd, our dishes came out fast. However, parking was a total headache, and honestly, the total cost felt a bit steep just for a casual meal. Great for the vibe and a quick drink, but the dumplings might not be the main event here.

Both dumplings we tried were really good. The reason I went from four to five stars when updating my review. Omg the LAMB ones are some of the best I've had in San Diego. Easily.
