We ended up trying this spot because it kept popping up on our Instagram feed, and since we both love dim sum, we figured why not. We ordered a little bit of everything: shrimp har gow, shrimp siu mai, shrimp rice rolls, BBQ pork, Young chow fried rice, egg drop soup, crab meat soup, chicken feet, ginger scallion tripe, and xiao long bao. First thing I noticed most of the shrimp dishes tasted really similar. I get that they're all shrimp-based, but the har gow, siu mai, and rice rolls kind of blended together flavor-wise. The siu mai was packed with shrimp, which I appreciated, but it just didn't stand out. The chicken feet were actually good though. The xiao long bao was probably the most disappointing for me. It was dry and didn't have that juicy, flavorful broth you expect. The BBQ pork was also on the dry side, so the sauce definitely helped carry it. The fried rice was okay nothing special, just your standard fried rice. As for the soups, both the egg drop and crab meat soup tasted pretty typical. Not bad, but nothing memorable either. I was honestly hoping for more crab in the crab soup I think I got like one strand in my bowl. Overall, I'd say the place is just average. It's not bad, but it's not something I'd go out of my way for either, especially considering the price. Most of the dim sum dishes are around $6-$9+, and I've definitely had better (and cheaper) at other spots. I typically go to Jasmine or Emerald whenever I'm wanting Dim Sum, but decided to give this place a try after seeing it on Yelp and I am glad I did! Met the owner and he was confident that his food was better than the other places mentioned AND much easier to find parking as the lot is huge. They push the carts around as traditional dim sum should be, the food comes out hot, and my party and I were happy. If you don't see the item you want on the cart, you can always make a request and they'll notify the kitchen to have it prepared. The restaurant was spacious and the atmosphere was chill. The food was very good and well priced. I think I found my go to spot in the San Diego area! My friends and I went on a day trip to San Diego. Being from San Gabriel where there are an abundant of dim sum restaurants, Diamond Place is truly a diamond in a rough. The dim sum dishes were absolutely delicious and well presented. Usually, I feel like there's a balance between how good the service is vs the taste of the food. Diamond Place definitely has both. Dim Sum doesn't taste mushy from being over steamed. The staff were very attentive - making sure we had the sauces we needed, making sure our tea pots weren't empty and making sure we had a great experience. I was truly amazed. I've never heard of this Chinese restaurant until my visiting relatives from Boston came down and recommended this place for dim sum and roast duck. My other relatives who also live in San Diego like me didn't know about here either as it's located very far southeast. We were all very excited to give this place a try! It's located in the same lot as Northgate Gonzalez Market a little east of City Heights (not sure what this area is called...) on 54th St. There is a huge parking lot with ample stalls that won't ever be an issue. The restaurant is HUGE. It's a Chinese and dim sum restaurant that provides catering and banquets for big parties. The dim sum selection wasn't that big, but the restaurant provided quality food. My relatives ordered a bunch of dim sum including pork shumai, chicken feet, shrimp & beef rice rolls, spare ribs, etc. They also ordered some vegetables and roast duck from their Chinese food menu. According to my visiting relatives, this was one of the few good restaurants that had really good dim sum and especially a really good roast duck. They didn't have any good ones back in Boston and came to this restaurant quite often to order their duck. Coming from Hawaii, I grew up with delicious roast duck and wanted to compare the ones here to there. And I got to say, it was pretty good! It was crispier and had really good comparable flavor, something I really missed when I left Hawaii. The only con about the roast duck was the lack of meat. But still great texture and flavor! I came another time with my boyfriend, brother, and his fiancée. We ordered only from the dim sum menu unlike the previous time I came with my relatives. Again, the dim sum was delicious! Great quality and plump items. Yum! The only two small items were honestly the egg tart and the beef rice roll which were both meh in my opinion. The beef rice roll barely had any beef which looked sad. Comparing this visit's beef rice rolls to my previous visit, the quality of it went down in my opinion. But my brother's fiancée liked it. The only downside was the prices of the dim sum which I feel is normal in today's economy and in San Diego. The prices range from $6.69 to $10.99 depending on the type of item you choose. Majority of the items we got were either $8.29 or $9.39 each. But thankfully, the quality and how big each individual item was, such as a single shumai, were great. That made the food worth the price! Our server in our most recent visit was soooo funny. He was chatty and very easy to talk to. Loved making jokes and honestly brought the energy. His coworker also did the same with another table too. Great way to pass time on a slow weekday. A favorite within my family. You are sitting there thinking you are in control and then a cart pulls up with a stack of steaming baskets and the lady looks at you like she knows you are about to fold. And you do, like a cheap lawn chair. Service is fast and friendly in that West Coast way where people smile at you without looking like they want something. They keep bringing plates until you start questioning your own mortality. And the parking lot is enormous. It is the kind of parking lot that makes an East Coaster emotional. Diamond Palace is a West Coast legend with East Coast energy. It is chaotic in the best possible way. Every other dim sum place in SD has seemed to have fallen off over the past decade but the food here still tastes fresh and they have all my favorite options! I love that during lunch hours they still have the carts although dim sum is able to be ordered all day I believe! I have had some of their non dim sum items and they measure up to the other local Canto-style cuisine. I like the service here but I can also speak Chinese so take that as you will :) They have a lot of tables and some giant ones if you're looking to bring a big group! I like this place.. probably close to authentic as it comes, but the only downfall is the floors are slick. Super slippery anywhere you walk. I wish I had stuck do Din Tai Fung because I know how to order there and pricing matches the amount of food you get. The restaurant was clean and pretty....surgical. And we got seated right away. Don't get me wrong, the food is pretty good, but that's where it stops. The service is straight forward so if you are looking for service to match the price you spend, you won't get it. When I asked the gentleman that served us for help on how to order and the pricing, he just pointed at the menus without a word and expected me to understand. He also literally just threw things down on the table from our food to the check. I don't care if you can't speak English well but service with a smile or even to get someone else to help us would've been greatly appreciated for a grand total of $104 bucks for an order of tea, Chinese broccoli, honey walnut shrimp, 2 steamed rice, and 3 dim sum orders. This place is legit and totally authentic Chinese food. I got their lobster and add noodles and that was so bomb!!! Flavor is spot on, lobster so fresh, and noodles cooked to perfection. Their snow pea sprouts were so good too, portion was generous and they made it just the way I like it with garlic, the right amount of oil, not too soggy so there's still some crunch and seasoned just right. We also had their crab and fish maw soup and that totally hit the spot. I love the texture that the fish maw adds to the soup. It was served with white pepper and red vinegar, just like the OG Chinese seafood restaurants does it. Although this is a hole in the wall and not fancy, their chef and service is top notch. Good value for the price but honestly pretty unwieldy because you couldn't even eat them in two bites let alone with chopsticks without making a huge mess. This spot is in the hood, right next to a Northgate Market. But, at least there's ample parking, and you can grab some cheap groceries and Mexican ready-to-eat hot items after. Except, I noticed that their filling to pastry/bun ratios were not the best. Most of the time, the wrapper/carb to protein ratio was too much, so it would dilute the flavor of the item. Prices are comparable to other SD dim sum spots. So it might look like the portions are big, but it's a lot of filler carbs. They have a good selection, and food items seemed to go in and out quickly, which usually means items aren't sitting too long, and they're likely fresher. XLB--the pastry seemed a little stale, and maybe too thick for my liking. They had run out of shrimp rice noodles, so we had the beef, and that was just fine. We also had roast pork, and that was also decent. Not gummy, but crispy. Large shumai and dumplings. Service was your typical dim sum--a little clarification needed for some requested items, some extra insistence on not wanting certain items, and so forth, but, harmless. I finally found someone to try this spot out with me. As I stepped through the doors the chandelier gave me instant Chinese wedding banquet vibes. It's spacious and well lit. We had lunch on a Tuesday. They weren't busy at all. We almost felt like it was private Dim Sum service just for us. You have the option to order from the menu or roll the dice and choose from the carts being pushed around. Worth noting is the size and portions of each dish. The dumplings were significantly larger than your typical Dim Sum houses. We enjoyed everything from chicken feet, siu mai, hargow, steamed shrimp rolls, bean curd rolls and BBQ pork buns. One of my fave dim sum places in San Diego. I come here with my family for celebrations and holidays like Christmas. The food is good and classic dim sum. I always get the chicken feet, sui mai, turnip cake, tripe, and rice rolls. They have the traditional dim sum carts which is a fun experience that not many places in San Diego still does.
