I booked a 'Wildlife Discovery Tour' through the concierge at the Jasper Park Lodge for the evening of August 3rd. Fairmont's brochure talked about being brought around to various points and a stop at Maligne Canyon to go for a walk. The concierge said that it would two to two and a half hours long and to be in the lobby by no later than 5:30. My girlfriend and I arrived at 5:25 to the front lobby and sat patiently waiting. We sat patiently waiting for 15 minutes and still no guide has arrive. Another 10 minutes go by and as I'm about to head back to the concierge to get a full refund, one of the door men come in and I overhear him ask a trio of others if they're waiting for the Wildlife Tour and then leads them out. If I hadn't chased after this guy to ask about the other two guests he seemed to have missed...we really would have missed the tour...so horrid marks for Fairmont service level, and just as bad for the tour operator that can't show up even close to the appointed time.
We finally get on to the small, crowded bus...and departed. The driver did a great job for the first 7 minutes of the tour talking about the lay of the land and some unique features. He also gave us instructions to keep our eyes peeled and to yell out if we saw anything.
After these instructions, he then proceeded to drive at least the speed limit (if not faster) so that basically everything was going by as a blur. Even if we had been able to see anything...we wouldn't have stopped in time regardless, as was proven later on in the tour.
We got to the east side of Jasper and stopped along with the rest of the highway to look at a rather large bull elk laying in the long grass by the highway without any care to the masses of humans huddled around him...and the driver let us get out and snap some pictures. After which we were off again at breakneck speed and a quick note about Jasper Lake, which really isn't a lake...yadda yadda yadda.
We continued our tour for about an hour without seeing another animal (not totally the drivers fault) and proceeded to head up towards Maligne Lake. Again...going so fast the trees were just a blur. The only reason we saw the Elk in the forest is because again, we had people pulled over to warn us. This time he wouldn't let us get out for a better vantage as he didn't want to block traffic (there was only us and the lady already stopped).
We continued up to the lake for a pit stop and an admonition against going down to the lake as we didn't have time to loiter. When questioned about the Canyon walk, the driver told us this wasn't that tour and didn't know who told us it would be.
Basically it was "get in, sit down, and shut up while we go where I want to go".
By this time, it was starting to get dark enough to the point where you would not get a great shot without a flash, which would scare the animals, or have a decent pro lens. Seeing as we couldn't get out of the bus...the flash would have been useless. But we continued on regardless.
Again, continue down the road at blurring speeds until we get to the intersection towards Jasper Park Lodge...and just as we get near the bridge, someone was able to spot a coyote or two off the road. After yelling out three times...the driver finally stopped, and promptly put the bus into reverse, thus letting off its beeper, and startling the coyote. And then we continued on. Getting darker and darker.
By this time, it's nearing 8:30 and we have a child in the back that has definitely been bored for a good while now. Insert all the wonderful cliche 'trapped with bored children' horror stories you want and you might come close...
As it was getting significantly darker now, we thought it would be time to call it a night...but nope...he had to show us this other area on the other side of Jasper and towards the turnoff to the Tram. We did see some animals...but even with a 200mm f/2.8 and an ISO setting of 2400...I couldn't get a decent picture to even tell what it was.
We figured that would be indicator enough that it was time to pack it in. But nope! He wans to go check out the area by the tracks where a bear has been known to feed on spilled grain. Nothing there either.
We finally pack it in and stop at every lodge on the outskirts of Jasper before being dropped off at JPL around 9:30. We've missed our reservation and they don't take anyone after 9. I'll save my review on JPL for later...but it was a complete gong show.
TL:DR
Booked a tour that showed up way late. Didn't get the tour we asked for. Went too damned fast to see anything. Went way too long for anyone's level of patience. Bus driver might get paid per kilometer traveled.
DO NOT BOOK THIS TOUR! Get a field guide and head out on your own. But please, be safe when you do so. Animals are amazing, but also unpredictable. read more
