***NOT ACCOMMODATING FOR NUT ALLERGIES*** have been here before in the past but came here with my boyfriend with a severe nut allergy. I was so excited to show him this spot. We asked for a sanitized scooper and to scrape off a little bit of the top of the ice cream tub to be safe that he would not have a reaction from cross contamination from the scooper. The owner came out and apologized but said that they could not accommodate scraping off the top of the ice cream container due to "not having enough ice cream". We were not offered a different flavor or anything so I don't think it would have mattered which flavor we ordered. They did refund his order. We have never had an ice cream shop refuse to scrape off the top of the tub or offer to scoop from a fresh ice cream tub in the back for added safety so this came as surprise. In fact, ruined our night since we had been looking forward to this and waited in line for 10-15 minutes just to have this happen. The owner, Kim is wonderful. Our family LOVES her Lemon Meringue ice cream and look forward to it every summer. We're devastated if it's not available but my brother-in-law always begs her to make some and she usually does, whenever it's possible. The pistachio is also delicious...oh and the Key Lime... I haven't had a flavor I didn't love and the portions are always big. The inside has super cute soda shop vibes but service is outside since Covid. We adore Sundae Best! We used to go here all the time when we had a place in NorthWildwood. That's right, it was so good we drove 20 minutes over on many summer nights. It is always busy, but I think that shows how good it is. The ice cream is homemade, and delicious, speaking of homemade the waffle cones are also and they are the best I've ever had! I got the blueberry crumb, which is fresh blueberry ice cream (had pieces of whole berry throughout) with crumb topping from a local bakery folded in. Not too sweet, nice smooth texture. Have been a long time fan and customer, and the price seems to have increased as portion sizes go down. A double scoop of ice cream is $8, while a pint is $10 (but can't order a pint after 7pm apparently). Also charge $3.50 for a pup cup (aka small amount of vanilla ice cream and whipped cream with a treat), when most of the other places on the island are free pup cups. read more

Horrible customer service. Went to the dune drive location to get ice cream for 5 of us. They wouldn't let us in the store due to "Covid." Really??? It's June 17th, 2023! COVID's been over. So next we ask to try a few flavors. Every other ice cream place in the world will let you try a flavor. The rude guy said no. I said "what if my 6 year old son doesn't like it? Kudos to the very great staff at Sundae best. I love their set up by having people order outside and the staff deliver it. I've been there a handful of times just so I can keep trying new flavors so far Keylime is my favorite. I especially like that their ice cream is not served in a cone but instead in a cup and they're happy to put a cone on top for you. With the weather being so hot and the kids not being able to eat ice cream on a cone fast enough this is the smartest way I've seen it served. Although I don't live in the area anymore, my parents still do. After Sundae Best opened, it was all they could talk about. I've been to Sundae Best a couple of times during my visits home to South Jersey and (as someone who has tried ALL of the local ice cream shops) I can easily say this place is the best place to get ice cream for a number of reasons. Sure, it's cash only, but that's true of a lot of places in a small town; just plan ahead! Sundae Best MAKES THEIR OWN ICE CREAM, which is becoming harder and harder to find nowadays, and it's delicious. This means that they rotate their flavors regularly, although they seem to have a selection of good ol' standbys (Avalon Mud being one of them). Even when it's super busy (and expect it to be if you arrive anytime after 7pm during the summer), the employees are more than happy to let you taste samples (but don't be *that* person who asks to try 20 flavors...have some decency!) or ask questions about the flavors (some of them aren't self-explanatory and you can't always see them in the freezer). Have I mentioned the price? No? It is stellar! It's $4.50 for a single scoop, which is excellent for a touristy place. The single scoops that I've gotten have all been a large portion (and bonus - if you get a waffle cone, they typically give you a bit extra). Even if you have your favorite ice cream place at least give this one a shot - who knows, you might even like it! read more

Probably the worst ice cream I've had in my entire life. I got cookies and cream ice cream. It was like 75% cookies and 25% cream. Should be the opposite. Whoever mixed the cookies in did a terrible job. My mouth was literally parched after eating it. You are supposed to crumble the cookies into a fine powder and then mix them in. This place just sloppily threw in some barely crushed cookies and hastily mixed them in. And the line was super long to order; we waited like a half hour. This place gets business because there are very few competitors in Avalon. Next time, I'll drive to Happy's in Wildwood or Sea Shells in the Crest. Better and cheaper at those places. read more

Very disappointed with this establishment. They decided to dispose of their practice of getting a new tub to scoop from for customers with allergies. Instead they will now only clean their ice cream scoop. This means many can no longer eat here due to high risk of cross contamination. Sundae Best truly is the BEST. Their homemade ice cream includes the typical flavors, including mint choco chip and cookie dough, but also includes unique flavors, such as coffee cake and funky monkey. I ordered one scoop of funky monkey (banana ice cream with peanut butter and chocolate chunks) and one scoop of death by chocolate (chocolate ice cream with dark/white chocolate chunks and chocolate fudge swirl) on a sugar cone. All I can say is wow. The funky monkey ice cream is now my all-time favorite flavor, and i imagine that it would be even better in a cup with hot fudge poured over it. The servings were HUGE (each scoop was probably a little smaller than a softball), unlike other nearby ice cream parlors that give skimpy portions and charge a ton. As I walked out, with a smile on my face and my ice cream in hand, I most definitely got stares from salivating customers waiting in line. The service was impeccable as well. The sign on their door said the closing time was 8, but I arrived at 8:15 only to find a line out the door and the employees still serving ice cream past the scheduled closing time. They usually have upwards of 30 flavors on deck, all home made with epic quantities of cream, making this the dietary equivalent of Fat Man. But you didn't come here to diet now, did you? We have been to Avalon three times and this is the first time we have ever been here because my cousin loves to go to the ice cream place in Stone Harbor with extremely long lines. But I'm so happy we ventured out on our own- this place had better ice cream, shorter lines, more interesting flavors, and much more pleasant seating outside under the lighted trees. An unusual collection of varied flavors made this a very enjoyable ice cream treat. The service came with a smile and the sever didn't mind explaining what each of the flavors were despite the fact that it was almost closing time.
