DO NOT RENT with Sun Buggy. They will steal your deposit! They did NOT return our full deposit $500 and they charged $500 to another family that rented the same morning. They stole $1000 from us. I got a group of friends together for my birthday to go ride in the dunes on Dec. 20 2025. We called the day before and rented 3 Atvs for 2 hours, and another family we were with rented 5 Atvs for 2 hrs. We thought they would have solid safe vehicles for us to use since we signed the day before. After an hour my friends ATV broke down, and the other family had 2 Atvs break down. One of the Atvs was 50ft away from being returned and the guy was driving 5 mph and the belt broke on his ATV. And they CHARGED US BOTH $500! We had ordered all of these ATVs the day before so we could get the "early special". But instead Sunbuggy walked away with $1000+the cost of rentals for two families which was also well over $1000. They charged our friends family $500 on the spot and a week later charged us $500 on my credit card basically not returning the deposit and claiming we also broke the belts on there ATVs after riding them for one hour!? One ATV they claimed the family broke had a child on it going very slow the whole time. I am hoping to file a joint lawsuit and or get the news/ police involved with this company. They are clearly stealing people's money and making the county of San Luis Obispo look bad for allowing these scams to happen to so many families. This type of business will make people never want to return to Pismo Beach. That's bad business for the community, not just looking bad for Sunbuggy. Also there was another man in line trying to get his $500 deposit back from the day before and they told him to call there non existent 1-800 number as a joke. Clearly this company is scamming people and should be held accountable. How long will they go on like this until someone goes to jail? read more

I made a reservation on 4/4/26 for 5/4/26 and received a confirmation shortly after. I got to my reservation but the office was closed. When I spoke to beach rangers, they told me they have been closed since 4/11/26 and expected to reopen 5/22/26. I received no notice or refund no apology. I was left confused and disappointed because this was a planned activity for my short vacation. I called them twice and emailed them twice. They put it all on the customer to chase the refund. They ended up ghosting me so I had to resort to filing a dispute with my bank. The lack of communication, unprofessionalism and compassion for amending their mistake by far the worst customer service I have ever experienced. I will never recommend this place read more

My friends and I went atv for our annual summer trip and I would say we all had a blast! We booked ahead of time for 1hr. Most of us booked the 4x4 450cc ATV and two people booked the 2 seater UTV. It was so much fun, and instructions were well given to ensure our safety. There was a shuttle going from where we get our helmets to the actual ATV area which was super convenient. Our shuttle driver was nice and funny too. We will be back for sure!! Only downsides- our reservation was at 11am but we didn't get on our atvs until 12pm as we had to wait for atvs to be available. Also this place should use some bigger signs to easily locate as there are different ATV businesses next to each other. read more

If I could give zero stars, I would. Booked a Polaris RZR weeks in advance for a group trip--was supposed to be an epic first-time adventure. Instead, it was a hot mess. Showed up early, watched the safety video, had our goggles ready... but no vehicle. Staff shrugged and said it was "in the shop," but it'd be there in 15. (It wasn't.) After 30+ minutes of waiting, they offered us an ATV, even though my partner had just recovered from a broken foot. We agreed because what else could we do? Rode for 20 minutes, came back, and the RZR had finally arrived... broken. It barely moved. Turns out it was in "limp mode." Staff casually mentioned Sunbuggy is "known" for this--overbooking and renting out broken stuff. That wasn't great to hear. Also, not to mention that everyone in our group had issues! Not one of the 11 of us had a decent experience. Wasted hours, didn't get what I paid for, and left frustrated and my partner limping. We don't want a credit. The staff were all beyond helpful and encouraged our youngest to get his own quad (which is what he has been hoping would be possible). They took time to find the right fit for him and taught him to ride. Our oldest was upgraded to a bigger and better quad and he was ready to let it rip. Everyone was beyond friendly and helpful, explaining the damage fees and the reasons why our extra coverage wouldn't be valid, which was nice to understand. Even though this review is a bit overdue, we didn't want to let the experience pass without sharing some honest feedback. My girl and I came here on Valentine's Day hoping to enjoy the dunes, go off-roading, and make some adventurous memories together. It had also been a little dream of mine to get behind the wheel of a Maverick, which is the vehicle we chose. To start with the positives, the staff was genuinely great. Andrew, in particular, stood out, he was beyond fantastic. The "orientation" was straightforward and efficient, and we even had a brief interaction with the owner, who was also friendly. Now, unfortunately, to the part that matters most. The Maverick we were given did not have functioning four-wheel drive, the front wheels specifically, and it appeared to be equipped with standard road tires rather than something suitable for sand. As you can imagine, wet sand and improper tires, increases the likelihood of getting stuck... which is exactly what happened. To their credit, they do offer assistance if you get stuck. However, we were told help would arrive "as soon as possible," and in our case, that ended up being over an hour. During that time, we repeatedly called for updates and were left waiting in the dunes. And they were having a difficult time locating us, considering the QR code on the vehicles, which doubles as a location update had been torn apart previously, so we didn't even have that to zero in onto where we were. Eventually, one of the team members came out to assist us and switched our vehicle to a Wolverine, which I believe is a Yamaha. That was appreciated. That said, the most disappointing part of the experience was the lack of any meaningful follow up or gesture to make things right. After losing a significant amount of time and dealing with a preventable issue, we expected at least some form of acknowledgment, whether that be a partial refund, extended ride time, or another opportunity with the Maverick. Overall, the staff was kind and professional, but the equipment and handling of the situation left a lot to be desired. With better maintenance and customer recovery, this could have been an amazing experience. read more

We had a great experience at sunbuggy rental with our 8 & 10 year old. I was apprehensive at first because of some of the negative reviews on yelp but they were the only company with a dune buggy rental in Pismo. We did an hour rental and subsequently got stuck in one of the dunes. Captain Randy towed us out and then showed us how to get safely back to the trail. All the workers were very nice and helpful. The pros: - The young folks running the business were pleasant and sharp enough - Once you are out on the dunes on the ATVs, it is an absolute blast! The cons: - The drive from their check-in office all the way out to where the rental vehicles are is a slog, and there is quite a wait for the shuttle bus in each direction. Thus, while we were signed up for an "hour" event, between showing up an hour early, waiting for the shuttle, and then coming back, it was more like 3 1/2 hours in total - The ATVs we were given to ride were not in the best condition. They were worn out, and my ATV shut down multiple times out in the dunes due to electrical issues that we had to fiddle with. My seat also came loose during the ride. Tips: - If you are going to do ATVs and are of adult size, get the 450s with four wheel drive, it is well worth the expense to be able to power your way up the dunes easily read more

The check in process was a torture with just one check in Rep. The additional paperwork was unexpected as we thought all the forms were completed online. It took a whole extra hour to wait in line to check in, to get a clip board to fill out more forms then to have to get back in line wait some more and then to finally get our helmets goggles and then another 15 to 20 minutes wait for a shuttle to take us out to the beach to get our vehicles. Our reservation was at 10, we arrived at 9:15...and we did not start driving until almost 11. All of the staff was really nice. You'll definitely need more than one hour out there in the dunes. We booked two hours but only used about 90 mins. I really hope they make the check-in process smoother in the future. Also ATV vehicles were a bit outdated and beat up. You know you're about to be ripped off when you find out that 10% (1 in 10 as the clerk stated) of the people who rent all-terrain buggies from this establishment either end up paying up to $1,500 in repairs for a broken belt or must purchase $25 worth of insurance to cover a broken belt. The belt in question is a piece of the vehicles propulsion system. Failure of the belt can be caused by any combination of things including poor maintenance, over tightening, etc., and of course the renter is not given any documentation describing the last routine maintenance on the vehicle. Regarding the trustworthiness of this business and the reliability of their rented equipment, one need not go any further than consider these facts. read more

We were told to get there an hour before our time. Maybe it was because our appointment was so early... But we ended up waiting a long time and got on the doom buggy at 10 thirtyish. Our call time was 10:00. Anyway, it was really fun and the staff was very helpful. The call time response was very quick which I appreciated. The main guy that helped us through all the times we got stuck or something happened to our vehicle was Bryan. He was very kind and helped us get un sunk. we had a very good time. The dunes were great and it wasn't too crowded. Be forewarned, bring some form of eye protection. We ended up being able to buy some on the beach. But, it'll be cheaper if you bring it yourself. It was easy to get stuck, so avoid the soft sand. Nevertheless, I had a great time and would do it again. I gave it a solid 8.5 out of 10. read more

It was such a hassle to take out the map/phone and refer back to it (or providing GPS coordinates of the allowable area) --it would've been the most helpful if there was a guide who led us to the area we're allowed to drive around in. It's confusing to see others driving around the dunes, but those not being THE dunes we are allowed in --providing guidance on bringing items such as water, snacks and where they could be stored (not sure how I would store it on some of the ATVs) Overall, I had a fun time driving out in the dunes with Sunbuggy rentals though there could've been a few things improved to make the experience even better. read more

Super unprofessional people with horrid customer service. The California State beach is closed and they waited until the last minute to notify me. They called and offered a rain check to their Las Vegas or Michigan locations. Um, who is going to leave the state to use their credit? Weird. I suggested they refund my money in full and that is where the fun began. Rude employees who are completely incompetent. No management available to expedite a refund and one person said, "do what you have to do" when I told them I would be disputing the charge with my bank. Which is exact what I did. I booked Sunbuggy in Oceano for 6 people 1 month in advance. I called & spoke with a female explaining I wanted 3 UTVs so we could all sit beside each other. I was told I was paying for 3, 2 seater UTVs & paid over the phone. The afternoon before our scheduled ride, we were asked to show an hour earlier to accommodate the high volumes or riders booked for our scheduled time slot. The morning of Saturday, 920/2025, 2 female employees were operating the check-in windows. They both helped me that morning but the 2nd female helped me once my forms were filled out & gave us our helmets. The 2nd female to help us was Caucasian with very dark brown hair. When she handed me my helmet, I was surrounded by 5 people. I took a step back so I could have adequate space & for someone to help hold my things. The female employee became visibly aggravated, spoke towards me with an aggressive & condescending tone. She extended her upper torso out of the window & yelled, "You cannot move from in front of the window. I need to see if the helmet fits you." I attempted to explain why I stepped aside & she continued to yell, "You cannot hide behind a crowd of people." The crowd was the group I was riding with & I was in plain site. As she handed 2 helmets to people in my group, she quickly grabbed more without watching the others try on their helmets. Her behavior towards me felt targeted & was unprofessional. Once we arrived to the beach to start our ride, I found out I was actually booked for 1 UTV and 2 ATVs. I spoke with Brad, the manager, who listened to me & explained the current situation. I agreed to the 2 ATVs as what I originally thought I booked was "booked out." Brad explained the "yellow 2 up has an oil leak. I told my guys to check it out to make sure it's safe." One male & a female, Jocelyn/Josalyn (unsure of spelling), were assisting us on the beach. Jocelyn spoke to us with an aggressive tone once I brought up the oil leak on the ATV they were renting to us. She responded, "I don't know anything about an oil leak. All I was told was to get the vehicles on the trailer." She was visibly frustrated & handed our contract over to the male assisting us. He looked at the yellow ATV & said it was safe to ride. 15 minutes into our ride, the UTV stopped working and then the yellow 2 up ATV started smoking. If it wasn't for Robert, the most incredible staff member of Sunbuggy in Oceano, I would've requested a full refund. He came to our rescue, provided us with appropriate vehicles, & added additional time on our clock that was spent receiving help. Robert has amazing customer service; he made us feel heard & taken care of. Robert deserves 5 stars for his work ethic & kind nature during stressful events. This would have been a five star review, but the staff took the opportunity to wring every last dollar they could out of us before we left. We rented four ATVs and paid for the full damage and belt coverage. My friends and I enjoyed the two hours on four ATVs and were fairly conservative during our ride, but we did tip an ATV over in the sand. Despite there being no damage to the ATV, my friend admitted that the ATV rolled while doing a cookie (he was really just turning). We were told we would be charged for it, but when we turned in our gear, the staffer demanded 300$ cash, the entire damage deposit for a single ATV. There was no assessment of damage to the ATVs, only the sand on the handlebars was used as evidence. The ATVs were in poor shape when we rented them: every bit of plastic was ziptied onto the ATVs, and one was missing the instrument cluster already. When I asked why my four 60$ damage and belt waivers didn't cover it, he said that cookies were "reckless driving", which was not explicitly stated in the videos or documentation. Since he had four sets of 300$ damage deposits for the four ATVs, he said that if we didn't pay cash directly, he would have to take 500$ from our deposit for tipping the ATV to make up for the State Park fees and taxes. But this was all based off the unstated policy that anything that happens is worth the entire damage deposit (or more). There was not 300$ worth of damage on the ATV, and there was no statement or agreement that the entire damage deposit would be waived at the drop of a hat. That's not how damage deposits work. I can understand charging a fee for some incident to help offset cumulative damage that occurs over time, but our waiver should have offset the cost, and the shady strong arm tactics holding our entire deposit hostage over an imaginary damage cost was outright scummy. If you rent from them, they will be friendly, and then look for every last bit of money they can wring out of you without causing a fight. read more

BE WARNED BOOKING ATV'S HERE!! STRESSFUL EXPERIENCE TLDR: My group booked 4 wheel drive ATV's, received 2 wheel drive vehicles which caused us to get stuck in the sand - and was treated rudely by the staff and QA team after reaching out for help. Our bus driver was extremely kind however!! My group and I booked 4 (four) 4x4 Yamaha ATVs through their website as the four-wheel drive ATVs were advertised to not get stuck in the sand. However, at the location, my group received 2-wheel drive ATVs when we were given our vehicles. We did not notice until we went into the steeper dunes and ultimately got stuck in the sand. During our 2-hour reservation period, the 2-wheel drive vehicles continued to get stuck consistently, which resulted in time lost as we had to continually stop to adjust the vehicle. When we returned the vehicles, we informed the staff of this issue, and they told us to talk to the staff at the front desk where we checked in. When we checked in with the staff at the front desk and mentioned our issue with the reservation, they were extremely rude and blamed my group for getting stuck. They asked us why we would drive down a steep dune and get stuck in a pit... We were not planning to get stuck, and isn't the whole point of this experience to ride the dunes? I had intentionally booked a reservation for a 4x4 vehicle to avoid the issue of getting stuck, which was advertised in all of Sun Buggy's promotional ads. After that occurred, the front desk staff told us that they were unable to help us and said their policy is to offer 2x4 vehicles if 4x4 vehicles were unavailable. However, we were never told that all the 4x4 vehicles were unavailable - which I highly doubt, as we checked in at 10 am and there was an abundance of ATVs in the lot available. Furthermore, I had paid online for the 4x4 vehicles, and there is a price difference between the 2x4 vehicles and 4x4 vehicles. We asked if we could receive a refund, and the front desk staff then reached out to their manager who was unwilling to help us. It felt as if we had to argue with them to even get another point of contact. They ultimately gave us a phone number to call - where no one picked up. I ended up calling the number again a weekend or two after, and they directed me to Sun Buggy's quality assurance email to help. I reached out twice and received a condescending response after OVER 2 WEEKS from my original email. Overall, this was an extremely disappointing experience. read more

Will be getting the state park police involved. This is by far the worst rental place I've ever dealt with. In my personal experience, SunBuggy acted incredibly shady from start to finish. When I returned the vehicle, they tried to fraudulently charge me separately during the deposit return process, supposedly because they didn't want to pay state park police fees themselves. It honestly felt like they were trying to make me cover their own costs. The ATVs were in terrible condition -- completely unsafe. The tires were worn out, barely any tread left, and the tire pressure was awful. Because of their poor maintenance, the ATV tipped to the side and I suffered serious injuries. Instead of showing any concern for my safety, all they cared about was squeezing more money out of me. They kept pushing me to sign extra paperwork I didn't agree with, even while I was hurt. To me, this place is dangerous, greedy, and unprofessional. They don't care about safety, their equipment is poorly maintained, and they treat customers horribly. Do not come here. STRANDED WITH KIDS, SHAKEDOWN FOR MONEY, AND ZERO ACCOUNTABILITY This place is a disaster and honestly feels like a straight-up scam disguised as an ATV tour. Our ATV broke down THREE TIMES. Not once. Not twice. THREE. TIMES. And every single time, we were left sitting there for 30+ minutes, making several calls to their so-called helpline before anyone finally showed up. No proactive help. No check-ins. Just "call again and wait." The most horrifying part? Young kids were stranded out there with their dads for HOURS. No shade, no clear timeline, no concern for safety. If you think this is "just an inconvenience," imagine your kids sitting there wondering when help will come. Completely unacceptable. When the mechanic finally arrived each time, instead of fixing the real issue, we were later blamed for the breakdown, told it was "belt damage" that WE supposedly caused. Absolute nonsense. Then comes the real kicker: they refused to let us get on the return bus unless we paid $200. Pay first, or stay stranded. That's not customer service, that's extortion. AFTER all this, they suddenly claimed there is a $25 belt insurance that supposedly protects customers from belt damage. Funny how this was never shown, never explained, never mentioned at booking or check-in. Convenient how it only comes up AFTER they decide to charge you. Reading other one-star reviews confirms this is a clear pattern: * Old ATVs breaking down * Customers stranded for long periods * Blame shifted to riders * Forced payments * Owner responding with the same lazy "no refund policy" line That "no refund policy" seems to only apply when THEY fail -- not when customers are put in unsafe situations. The equipment looks ancient. Probably as old as the business itself (20+ years). We were never shown any maintenance or inspection reports, yet they're quick to point fingers when their junk equipment predictably fails. This place should NOT be taking families or kids. The lady in the trailer to book the trip was great, gave some recommendations for food and where to buy shoes and a sweater. The website says they recommend wearing shoes but not required. Soon as you get to the trailer a big sign that says shoes are mandatory. Unit was pretty beat up covered in rust. It's on a beach with salt water I get it and not the end of the world. I guess the most annoying thing was the "only low gear" rule. Unit topped out at 25 mph and wasn't powerful enough to make it up quite a few hills. My golf cart goes faster lol. 1 Star - Very Disappointing and Stressful Experience We had a really disappointing experience with Sun Buggy Rentals in Pismo Beach and I would not recommend them, especially for families. About 10 minutes into our ride, the buggy completely broke down. We were stranded in the sand dunes with two kids, which was both stressful and unsafe. We tried calling the company repeatedly -- it took six to seven calls before we could finally reach someone. Even after that, it took them around 30 minutes to come out and help us. Instead of taking responsibility for the equipment failure, they blamed us, claiming that we went into the "wrong zone." There was no clear explanation or warning provided beforehand, and nothing indicated that we had done anything wrong. Overall this was a disappointing and scary experience, largely because of Sunbuggy but also because of the dunes in general. With Sunbuggy I made a reservation two months in advance after researching the exact vehicle that we wanted. On the day of our reservation, they didn't have the vehicle that I reserved (which is especially upsetting because the price of your experience is dependent on the price of the vehicle that you rent). I appreciated that they tried to make up for it by letting us try two other vehicles. The map that is provided is WOEFULLY lacking! Granted, a map about sand is challenging in pretty much all circumstances, which is why there should be signs in the dunes to help you navigate better. About 3/4's of the dunes are entirely fenced off right now but this isn't indicated on the map. We got completely turned around and trapped in zone 4 for over an hour. We asked four separate people for directions, including a park ranger, and literally every single person had different instructions on how to get out, none of which were accurate. We called the Sunbuggy helpline but it is someone that simply has the map in front of them and can only dispatch for drivers to come help if you're stuck in the sand. Once we finally were able to make our way out, we did get five seconds worth of wet sand only on the driver side door (there was no wet sand ANYWHERE else on the vehicle, just on the driver door) and we were charged $200 for this!! After being charged, they tried to sell us on coming back again for a discounted price (cue eye roll here). They literally wiped the sand off of the door and then put the buggy back in rotation. Now a note about sand dunes... I didn't realize that sand dunes are essentially sand cliffs that you can't see until you're literally at the very edge! It was terrifying and the sand blindness was super disorienting, which is why signage in the dunes feels completely necessary. If you get lost, don't go along the fence edges, they're surprisingly treacherous; follow the numbered markers in the middle of the dunes only. This was a very expensive, very disappointing experience that I do not recommend. read more

I rarely leave reviews, but after the experience we had with Sun Buggy in Pismo/Oceano, I feel like I have to warn others. What was supposed to be a fun and exciting day turned into an extremely frustrating, chaotic, and honestly disrespectful experience. We feel like we were robbed -- of our time, our money, and our trust. We had a reservation scheduled for 2:00 PM, and we showed up early, excited and ready to go. But from the start, everything was disorganized. No one gave us clear directions, the staff seemed annoyed we were even asking questions, and we ended up waiting around for over an hour and a half. We didn't even get on a buggy until 3:30 PM -- and that was only after chasing people down and asking what was going on multiple times. When we finally got the buggies, we were given two vehicles. One of them broke down after just 20 minutes in the dunes. Not only was that dangerous, but it completely ruined the already shortened time we had left. The equipment was in terrible shape, and honestly, we didn't feel safe riding them to begin with. It felt like the company just wanted to push people through and didn't care if the vehicles were even functioning. The transportation to the dunes was also ridiculous -- not well explained, uncomfortable, and made us feel like we were being shuffled around like cattle. The staff was rude, dismissive, and didn't seem to care at all that our entire day was ruined. We calmly voiced our concerns, hoping they would take accountability or offer a partial refund for the wasted time and broken vehicle. Instead, they offered us a "voucher" to come back to their broken, poorly run operation. Seriously? As if we would ever come back. We spent a lot of money for this experience, and all we got was stress, disappointment, and a deep sense of being taken advantage of. The negligence of this company left us paying for their mistakes. My family and i have rented before and loved riding the dunes, were always very safe and mellow it was a family trip we were being exceedingly safe driving at 15 mph when our car broke down. We checked the car and out of 4 springs three were clearly brand new, and the broken one, completely rusted and old. We were nearing the end of the hour we booked and were stranded in the sand. 30 minutes on the dunes in cold weather and we're finally picked up in an again less than ideal vehicle, when we get back we are expected to pay for the obvious old and rusted part, which turned out to be an issue with the suspension for anyone wondering, and not only for the part itself but also for the time it will take to repair. We watched the safety video read the important information stayed in safe zones and followed every rule possible. Vehicles have wear and tear I understand that but it should be fixed before customers are put in the vehicle, and not to mention being expected to pay for the entire thing. They gave us an old vehicle that was bound to fail, our path shows that we followed the safest most responsible route possible, I understand paying for some of the repair but we were left paying for the entire thing leaving us renovating their faulty equipment. We were calm in negotiating and the staff was negligent and acted as if we were at fault despite evidence of faulty equipment. We are experienced drivers and have done this before we know what a quality RZR looks like and what we were given was below standard. We were safe and did everything in our power to avoid this type of situation the company was unreasonable in making us the people at fault. When they needed a new repair they simply let us look like we broke it when in actuality they needed to get it fixed anyway and instead of using there own money they gave us a terrible experience which resulted in being a free repair for them. read more
