We rented ATVs from Arnie's this past weekend and honestly had a really great experience. I was a little nervous going in because I've seen a lot of mixed/negative reviews about ATV rental companies in the area, but Arnie's had the best pricing so we decided to give it a shot. I'm really glad we did. The front desk person was super friendly and made check-in easy. Our group was split into two for the walk through, and I ended up with Zach while my kids were with another staff member. I'm specifically leaving this review because of Zach. He took the time to walk us through everything, explained things clearly, and made sure we felt comfortable before heading out. Our group of six were all first-timers, so we were excited but definitely nervous. Zach completely changed that for us and made the whole experience feel easy and fun. On the other side, my kids had a different experience. The other staff member wasn't very engaged when they asked questions. His responses felt more like he was talking to experienced riders, and he didn't seem very interested in helping or being there. I ended up asking Zach to help them out. Overall, we still had a really fun time and felt taken care of thanks to Zach. If you're booking with Arnie's, I'd definitely recommend trying to go when Zach is there--he really makes the experience. read more

Fantastic experience. Took my 15 year old son today for Spring Break. We made it at 3pm today, just in time for the last booking on the spot. Office staff was friendly and professional. After taking care of business, she directed us to the beach, where we were shuttled to where they keep the ATVs. Our guide, Zack, made everything clear, explained the lay of the land on the map, and let us know where we could safely go. We booked an hour and had an absolute blast. Beach wasn't too crowded, nor were the dunes. We were definitely able to open our ride out and really "rip" as they say. We got plenty of dune riding in, took in great view, got some nice photos and returned to home base. Everything went off without a hitch, and we were shuttle back to the shop. This place is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. We took a 2 seater, but next time we're coming back to go individually. read more

We had a group of 35 to go ATVing. We rebooked with them and they did a good job with our large party. There are helmets, a safety video & instructions on the beach. Parking is on the side streets and not too far but the street they are located is traffics because of all the campers. The kids had a blast. Our mixed group had a variety of renters and they were able to accommodate all of our wishes. I was very glad that we rented doubles because the have more power to go over dunes. We rented from Arnies 10/12/25 for the first and LAST time. Having rented from STEVEs in the past we were disappointed to find out they had no availability and read great reviews on Arnies and decided to give a try. This is a much smaller business, a bit cheaper, and there is no safety video or instruction for new or experienced rider and that should have been a huge red flag. Why, because this is the dunes and conditions are varying and how to handle the ATVs here is different. The quality of the ATVs seemed ok and only given helmets not chest shields like at STEVEs Rental. The first 30-40 mins was mostly smooth except a few stallings and then our 25 yr old son was thrown off the ATV by one of the ridges!!! We got his helmet off and saw foot was bent sideways...it happened so fast honestly. Other riders near by stopped to help give our son a ride back and helped ride his ATV back and I picked our son up by the entrance to the state park and drove him to the ER. I know weavers were signed, but between having rented lower quality ATVs and none of Arnies staff showed up to assist nor have they reached out to us AND that says a lot about this company. If we were to ever rent and ride in the dunes again I would rent from a safer company with better equipment to be honest. Yes you pay a bit more but it's worth it. Our son had surgery on his ankle once we got home since we were from out of town and endured 5 fractures, has 14 screws and will not be able to put any weight on it or drive for 4 + months...the stress this has caused our family is overwhelming and it could have been a lot worse read more

As a first timer at the dune (ATV) the price is the lowest. We rented the 250cc manual transmission. Oh boy they look bad and not powerful enough to climb the hills sometimes. If we only knew they were in bad condition, we would have rented the 400cc instead. The helmet they gave me initially was soaking wet with sweat. The lady the office is super nice and accommodating. We cut our trip shorter, we parked the atv's where we got it from, the guy with longer hair said , we had to move and park it on the other spot. He said get your helmet back and wear it to move it to another spot. The guy was too lazy to move it for us. We just let him do his job. I might try steve's or sun buggy next time. This was our first time ATV riding and it was awesome! The staff at Arnie's from start to finish were very nice and helpful. They were efficient and also made sure we understood the map/layout of the sand dunes and how the ATVs worked. There were 1,400 acres of sand dunes for us to ride ATVs on! We did the 2-hour rental with automatic ATVs and had a great time. They had a phone number that we could call if we had questions or got stuck while ATV riding. If I made my girlfriend happy, I'm happy. Take my money and take all of it. It was her first time doing ATVs and she loved every bit of it. Being someone who has rode them at Pismo Beach in the past, I wanted to give her the same experience. Getting the ATVs was the easy part. You sign a couple of waivers, pick the ATV that you wanted. They came in different CCs. The CCs on an ATV refer to the engine's cubic centimeters, which is a measurement of the engine's volume. The higher the CCs, the faster and the more power the ATV will have. The only downside about ATV renting is that they give these outdated and horrendously long "safety videos" for you to watch which overcomplicates the whole ATV riding process. I came out more confused after watching the video. Not having reception and waiting for the video to buffer wasn't fun either. Once we got to the sand, we were doing donuts and going at high speeds like no other. My girlfriend even made me eat her dust a couple times. It was definitely a fun time for the both of us. read more

Horrible horrible experience . these guys are the smallest ATV merchants/biz here and they have zero and really bad customer service. Really really bad service. I went here due to the price and as they say you get what you pay for. When you go to the beach and see the SHACK and their operations you will see how unprofessional and old beat up ATVs they have. ATV died and stuck for 1 hour back and forth, spent time talking and waiting to get help just pathetic service. Wish I had paid more and gone to the other ATV merchants to get a better experience. Arnies is hands down one of the BEST Rentals I have been to in the SLO Area!! I have rented ATV's for the dunes multiple times with other business and this one I have had the best experience with their customer service and ATV equipment as well! They are also the closest to the dunes and do not have to drive from the rental place to the pickup site. There is also plenty of parking on the side of the road. Ended up booking the regular semi-automatic 250 ATV but when we arrived the lady asked if we wanted to ride the new version for no additional cost which had the shifter gear number visible rather than the old ATV which you couldn't tell what gear you were on! When we signed the paperwork at the front office, we hopped in the SUV which took us to their site on the beach! This is where they have all the ATV's loaded and where you get geared up and head out to the dunes. The workers were super informative and professional which I really enjoyed. Many of the other businesses weren't as professional as the other ATV shops. We ended up riding for 2 hours and was enough time for us to reach the end, take pictures, and enjoy our time out there without feeling rushed! I also recommend going in a group of 4 or 5 people because the fewer people you have the more work you have to do if someone gets stuck or needs help! It will get tiring! Having at least a couple of people is always good in case something happens. Overall, I really liked my experience here with Arnies. The equipment was great and the service was awesome. Some tips I recommend is to wear something comfortable and dont mind getting sandy, bring sunglasses and water and a backpack just incase. read more

Great experience riding the ATVs on pismo beach marred by horrible customer service. We were a group of beginners that never rode ATV's before so we booked a few honda 250 recons and honda 250 EX's. The website says both of these are fun for riders with little to no experience, so we thought it was a good fit. The experience at the rental office was good. The lady at the desk was friendly and gave us some tips on how to be safe on the ATVs. But once we actually went to pick up the ATVs the experience went downhill. The staff at the ATV pick up spot were unfriendly and very unhelpful. One guy asked how much experience we had, and when we said none, he acted dumbfounded like "what??? Really?? The EX are sport bikes.." to which we responded the site said they're suited for beginners, but he had no response to that. Sidenote that if you are a complete beginner it's best to go with the Recon model which allows you to shift with your hands (up/down buttons) as opposed to kick shift like the EX, and the Recon also has a led indicator to tell you which gear you're on which the EX doesn't. The guys were completely unhelpful and mumbled some unclear instructions about how to operate the bike. They were irritated when we asked clarifying questions as if we were wasting their time. Actually riding the ATVs was a very cool experience. Even as a beginner you can stick to less hilly areas and have a lot of fun. If they can completely revamp the training/info session part then I could recommend Arnie's but otherwise i imagine there's gotta be more welcoming places for beginners. read more

The experience: This was my second time going on the Pismo Beach / Oceano dunes, and it's a blast. Most first-time riders will likely start out more tentative and go slow, but would definitely recommend enjoying your time out there as it will be up very quickly. I think 1 hour is perfect if you're a first-timer or casual rider, as you can ride through the majority of the area and arrive back at the check-in point comfortably. The ATVs have a thumb-controlled throttle, so between thumb soreness and the constant vibration of the vehicle, you'll likely be low on energy after an hour. Need to know: You have to arrive 45 minutes prior to your reservation time, which we were unaware of (likely our fault). Even though we only arrived 15 minutes prior, they were able to get us out to the dunes fairly quickly, so we still got 45-50 mins of riding time. Notable: Make sure to listen to their instructions so you know how to do things like reverse, or get an ATV un-stuck. It's far easier to do it yourself rather than having to call them to help you out. read more

I don't like to give bad reviews, I prefer to address my issues directly, but after 2 follow up emails with no response, here we go. I rented 4 Honda 250 EXs on July 1st. They did not have 4 available even though I had booked weeks in advance. We were given 3 EXs and a Recon instead. That Recon was a problem the whole session. It stalled several times then stopped working, stuck in gear and could not restart. We were out in the dunes waiting for 1 and a half hours. The first guy that came out clearly knew that particular ATV was a problem. And I quote, "Ohh no, they sent this Recon out?!" He couldn't fix it and said he needed a tool. So he left and said we need to wait with the ATV. Then waiting for half an hour, another guy showed up with a wrench, and fixed it. We went straight back to the counter after that because we had no time left. The first guy said we were 20 minutes late, clearly not remembering he was the first guy that came out 30 minutes earlier. I know these things happen, but there was a clear breakdown in sending out an ATV with a known problem. This issue was exacerbated with the incorrect assumption from the first guy that it was a rider problem, hence showing up with no tools even though we detailed the problem to him in a phone call. So we had 20 min ride time out of a 2 hour rental. No apology, no attempt to make things right, ignoring any follow up. Also, they are not equipped to shuttle us from the rental office to the dunes. We had to use the bus from Steve's ATV business. Go with the bigger, better organized business! Stay away from Arnie's. read more

There were a lot of major problems with renting here, which I have to say is a little surprising given that this is a top rated business on Yelp. First off though, I have to say the staff at the rental office was extremely nice. She chatted with us and hung out with us while we waited for our rental time, and she was really helpful when we called ahead of time to make adjustments to our rentals, comment on weather conditions, etc. She is probably the best part of Arnie's. Now all the problems - 1. The biggest problem was when we arrived for our rentals and were told the owners decided to drop by and take the ATVs for a ride. Apparently, they wanted to extend their time because they were having too much fun and our reservation time has been pushed back an hour and change. Like what!? How incredibly rude. So now, if my group had made any other plans, they're ruined. Not like it would be easy to make another ATV rental for a large group elsewhere on the spot. 2. Some of our ATVs didn't have flags on the butt of our vehicles. They said it wasn't a problem. But, once we got out into the dunes, we find out it's ILLEGAL to not have the flags. A cop pulled over my friends and asked them to turn back. So, there goes about 15 to 20 minutes wasted just going back to the shop and remedying this situation. 3. Some of the ATVs don't start randomly. The ATVs will turn themselves off when you idle for too long sometimes, which is fine, but then sometimes they won't turn back on. You have to jump on them weirdly and very forcefully and hope they turn themselves back on. Luckily enough, we were able to get our ATVs going again, so not a major complaint, but definitely kinda a yellow flag about the state of these ATVs. read more

Let me start this review by saying we came on an off day. I chose Arnie's based on all the glowing reviews... We booked a 9am ATV rental for two hours and it seems like they were short staffed that morning. The staff were super friendly and chatty, and helpful in explaining how to get around the dunes. They were super patient with my nephew who was a bit anxious about riding ATVs for the first time. However, due to being short staffed we did not get out onto the dunes until about 11:30.... so a bit of a long wait considering our start time was 9am. Thankfully we were waiting out on the beach so at least had a nice view to keep us company. Part of that was due to the fact that we decided to wait for an automatic ATV as opposed to a manual for my older son, and needed to wait for them to get it out to the staging area. 5 stars for the friendliness of the staff, but minus several stars for all the hiccups that morning. I'm sure this is a one-off experience as it looks like many others have only great things to say! read more

Like everyone else, we did a cost analysis between Arnie's and the other places nearby for 3 ATV bookings for Mother's Day. Ended up going with this one based on reviews and we were not disappointed. The office staff was efficient and communicative, also talented at multi tasking. The gentleman who drives you out to the dunes in a suburban was super friendly and has a great information packed spiel about rules of the dunes and how to not get ticketed by the rangers for speeding in low speed zones. He dropped us off at their storage trailer at the entrance to the dunes and the staff there got us set up with helmets and a tutorial on how to use the bikes- we have all ridden before but its been YEARS. The guy working with us was so friendly and patient and nonjudgemental, plus he wished mom a happy mothers day which was sweet. Then we were off and had a great time! It took us maybe 20 min to get used to shifting and how to make the bike do what you needed it to do but overall LOVED our time, mom said she felt 30 again (: We will absolutely be back! read more
