Our experience was pretty disappointing. Our camp neighbors were noisy after quiet hours and had little consideration for anyone around them. The bathrooms and showers were filthy. There are also no bear boxes available at the camp sites, which was surprising given the fact that we were warned that black bears are active and present within the campgrounds. The showers cost $1 for about five minutes, so it's highly recommended to bring quarters. Unfortunately, the shower area was the worst part of our stay. At one point, there were grown men drinking, smoking, and causing a ruckus inside the men's bathroom. It was filled with cigarette smoke that it basically felt like they were hotboxing the place. Definitely not something you want to deal with when you're just trying to take a shower. Most of the campsites were also noticeably uneven due to the campsites being sloped on an uphill incline. It made setting up more aggravating that it should've been. Considering how much you pay to reserve a campsite here, you would expect the park rangers and staff to do a better job maintaining the facilities and enforcing basic campground rules. Aside from that, kayaking was fun. The lake was nice, but as far as the actual campground, I would not camp here again. read more

Took a one night camping trip here for our grandson's 12th birthday. Rented the cutest little cabin that had electricity and large double size bunk beds. Close to the marina and restaurant as well as bathrooms. Went fishing from docks here and went paddle boarding. Nice people here and a lot of fun! read more

From what we could see it was beautiful. Didn't know or heard about this place at all. Until someone had mentioned it while we were in arroyo grande. You could go to it from the main road which takes you through the country side. Also wineries along the way which we found out. Along the whole stretch of the drive, there is no parking along the highway. Sucks that you can't get out for a picture of the lake. We finally made it to the entrance which there's a fee to get in. We literally just wanted to see the lake and get a pic. Give or take, 5 minutes or so. Spoke with the entrance guards, it was 12.00 per vehicle and as we had our dog with us, that would be another fee for pets. Instead, we just opted out to leave. Honestly, kind of sucks that you can't check it out without having to pay to get in. Not only that, they do offer camping which the camp site wasn't that far. Hiking trails as well as a boat ramp. The parking area when you enter is where the check in and customer service are. I believe there's a public restroom as well. We ended just getting out and stopping right at the gate to take a quick picture of the lake. From what we could see, there was people fishing right along the base. Curious to know if you could just leave your car at the lot and walk down to the water which was a like couple min walk when we left. Or maybe even that, you still have to pay a fee. Regardless, it was somewhat beautiful from what we could see off the road. Along the whole drive in till the entrance, no stopping or parking along the road. read more

Gorgeous campsite. We came here with the Boy Scouts. About 10 families. We stayed in 7-19 Mustang. Gorgrous!! A nice tree for the kids to climb. Flat ground for the tents, good fishing off a dock. Room for the kids to ride bikes, play baseball. Weather was amazing, we came in November. Would highly recommend. Close enough to the city. However, still quiet. Bathrooms were very clean and close. Had a wonderful time at Lopez Lake. It's been 8 years since my last visit and this time, what a difference a full lake can make. Perfect weather in the in 90s, surrounded by amazing wild life and of course family fun. From morning walks, to the witnessing the zip lining to bumming it at the lake, nothing could beat a great week away from work. This was a 2 1/2 trip for me and I would come back dinner than later. Only negative thing I would say, would be the restrooms. Besides a well needed update, a thorough cleaning and removal of spiders and webs is needed. Not. Deal breaker since I have a trailer but for those who dry camp, I'm sure a clean restroom(s) is what is expected. Overall, I had a wonderful time at Lopez Lake and recommend this to anyone who wants a family get away. Photos are available to view. read more

First off i have been camping here since the 90's. It used to be a great outdoor vacation spot to fish and camp and hike and a little boating on the small lake with various other activities. And like alot of buisness when they start focusing on straight profit they seriously suffer in any areas that concern the comfort or safety of its guests but today i have seen it all. We have bears here at lopez and as a result all the trash bins have to be bear safe so they are not attracting the bears directly into the areas of the campers. Well in an attempt to save a couple of dollars, as in the trash truck driver having to get out and unlatching each dumpster before dumping it into his truck, it would add a minute to each bin in the park he has to empty. I dont know the exact number but i would estimate 60 bins here so thats 1 hour of extra driver time needed to get through the park. So you would gather that removing the bear safety latches would save 1 hour a week, 30$...... thats is what the publics safety is worth to the county of San Luis Obispo. On top ofvthat they used to have an employee patrolling the park every couple hours making sure the rules were bei g followed, nothing dangerous was going on ect. I hate to say that is no longer the case, despite all their prices going up exponentially year by year their employee count has dropped drastically. Its gotten so bad that ive been here 24 hours now and havent seen 1 truck on patrol. Last night bears were raiding the trash cans, dogs were barking all night long, and people were partying well into the next day with nobody telling them some people actually enjoy their sleep. Its a sad day in america when this type of behavior is now become the new standard and money is now all that matters, not even the customers safety. Year by year the deaths on the lake here keep going up with this year so far being the most ever and we are barely a couple weeks into summer. As a local resident i would tell you, if youve come to party, get wasted, fight bears and dance with death then this is your place but bring a ton of money cuz your gonna pay substantially for it. read more

Depending on what you're looking for this could be a great spot. It's car camping in any area I've seen with areas for RVs and "primitive" sites. I've never been to the primitive areas. Being car camping you drive a paved road to an assigned spot. Spots have at least electrical outdoor plugs and nearby water for cleaning dishes and such. There are also bathrooms within a couple hundred of feet of most sites. Showers are located only in a few areas so prepare to feel less than squeaky clean. Right now there are no fire pits due to drought /fire hazard. It is a bit inland so it can get a little warm during day but generally cools off at night. Staff is pleasant but we brought no issues for them. It's not the African plain or San Diego Wild Animal Park but you will have close encounters with birds, buzzards, turkeys, chipmunks and foxes/ coyotes so be aware but it was no drama for me. Deer may walk near your site in the morning! You can find spots with nice views and/or shade. I was last here about 10 years ago and used the in park store/bar which was pleasant enough. They have a water park my kids once enjoyed. I heard it is still good but can be very crowded summer weekends. read more

Lopez Lake was really nice. Since the waterpark was closed I set up behind it and had the entire back of the campground to myself except for deer, turkey, squirrels, a raccoon, and a bear. The bear liked to hang out in a culvert nearby, but as long as I knew where he was it was fine. NEVER startle a bear! The store is nicely stocked and the restaurant/bar isn't bad. They charge $5 to connect to the internet, but I had great cell service in the park. Roads were in pretty good shape overall. Restrooms were clean and offered free (cold) showers. The website has pretty good descriptions of each campsite. I think I picked the best spot possible (Mustang 12) for my hammock. The only negative I could see? Many of the firepits had missing or broken grates so I wouldn't plan on cooking over a fire until I check it out first. Overall? Very nice. Thumbs up! read more

My family and I love camping at Lopez Lake. We have been camping there for the past 10ish years and have really enjoyed our camping experience. There is an abundance of wildlife and we've generally enjoyed our time here. However, this last trip over the weekend did leave me with a few reservations. First, the restaurant says they are open at specific hours but the 2 times we went there this past weekend they were closed (within their allowed business hours). I have worked in many restaurant locations and this is unacceptable; you should ALWAYS be open during your posted business hours. I understand there are circumstances (I've been there), but none that I can see that wouldn't allow you to put something out (cold sandwiched, salads, etc) until the your expected to close. Second, the amount of trash seen at our campsite when we arrived was extremely disappointing. Charging a cleaning fee should be added for those who do not leave the campsites in the a good condition. Third, this year we noticed a lot of dead limbs on trees and a branch fell right onto my RV; thankfully it did not fall onto a person, but trimming is necessary for the safety of your visitors. Lopez Lake still gets 5 stars because one camping weekend does not dismiss the great experiences. read more

Beautiful camp grounds well maintained and lovely staff. Family friendly they even had smoky the bear drive around and had a small ice cream social for the littles. Some sites are right next to a little drop off a bit dangerous for small children wish that was disclosed in a description on the site but it happens it's nature I wish there was better pictures to reference what the sites look like exactly how much shade what the area looks like. Fun recreation lake that's not too far from Arroyo Grande. We visit the Central Coast often and we were looking for a new place to explore. I saw this lake on Google Maps and decided to make a day trip out of it. We rented a pontoon and gave ourselves a tour of the lake. If you're planning on spending several hours at Lopez Lake a pontoon rental is the best way to explore, swim and have a picnic lunch all in the same afternoon. Simply find a cove, drop anchor, put on some sunscreen and relax... - There's a day use fee here ($10 parking). - High Street Deli in SLO has great sandwiches. We have been coming here for 15 years and we always camp for about 10 days. We secured what we consider to be a premium site here and were so excited. Unfortunately, on day 4 (a Saturday) part of a tree had come down in our site and we were forced to move our motorhome to a very small site close to the marina. The staff promised to clear up the problem Monday morning, and they did. By 1030 on Monday, we were back at our reserved site. No fires were allowed, as the probability of fire is high this time of year. There was a lot of dry brush and foxtail in every site and all over the common areas. Be cautious of this if you have dogs. June weather is almost always nice, and we were able to fish almost every day of our visit. We had parked our boat trailer at the marina parking lot, as we had reserved a slip. Unfortunately, it seems someone hit our boat trailer and broke a guide pole, which was a bummer. It would have been nice if they'd at least left a note, but this is not particularly shocking. We saw at least 10 deer in our site during night time, which was cool. No bears spotted, although we were told they were out. Trash pandas everywhere! We visited the Mustang water park (good for little kids), which was enjoyed by all. The number of children screaming at the playground until 10pm (easily tolerated by us as we knew what we were getting into when we picked the site that we did) and the people walking their dogs and infringing on our spot were the only real downfalls, and not the fault of SLO County parks. One guy- pretty sure he was highly intoxicated- walked between my motor home and our very set up kid tents and picnic tables (honestly, in the absolute middle of our site) in an attempt to get to the parking lot below. Some folks are just clueless. He hurried to the path after being corrected by my 3 large, leashed dogs. There were also many nice, respectful campers, which makes up for the few who weren't great. In any event, another successful summer of lopez camping. We love this place and hope our kids will take their kids here when they're grown. read more

Nature is our great calming agent now and getting outdoors feels like a sanctuary. Lopez Lake is almost full and offers lots of opportunities for enjoying the tranquility of nature. We drove out for a scenic drive and some fresh air on Sunday. It wasn't at all busy, but it was an overcast day. The road there is beautiful, with vineyards and parks along the way. The lake itself was welcoming boat riders, jet ski riders, and fishers. As we drove past, the boat launch was empty and we only saw maybe five boats on the lake itself. The lake winds around, and has interesting nooks and crannies to explore. I have visited with my kids and grandkids on other occasions and happily found a tiny cove to park the boat, dive in and enjoy the water. The drive itself was soothing and offered a welcome taste of nature! read more

After bugging the heck out of me. Me and a friend got together and went fishing at Lopez Lake. After a 3 hour drive from L.A. straight thru I was hoping for a good day fishin. With my friend bragging on how good the fishing is at this lake and how I'm pretty much guaranteed to catch fish. We rented a steel boat thats supposed to hold 6 adults . It barely held both of us with our gear But besides all that we sat 6 hours in a hard steel seat boat scorching sun with no The Bluegill and Bass were my target fish. I caught one 6 in. Bass in 6 hours that escaped. He caught one Bluegill to his delight YAY. So 3 hour ride up, 6 hour sit and wait then 3 hour ride back. My arse was KILLIN me. This is Bull S**t NEVA AGAIN P.S. Too many people packed in, blaring loud music, not peaceful or restful. This place is for loud party people. Can't wait to go home, will never come here again. I wish there was something that could be done about the blasting music. 10 pm quiet time was totally ignored and not at all enforced. Music went on till past midnight. I've been coming here for over 20 years. This is one of my fav places with childhood memories of camping. There's always been bears, deers, and turkeys to see when camping here. It's always been peaceful and beautiful. A few cons- the zip line isn't open during "off season" (when I was a child this didn't even exist) which is strange it doesn't need to be 90 to zip line. Also the lake is very very low compared to years ago which is understandable but still is sad to see no one out there wind sailing and swimming etc. When the wind blew we got many smells of bathroom stench while in Quail 33. We've NEVER smelt the bathrooms before so this was really gross and will hopefully be addressed. Other than a few things this is still one of my fav places to be even after 20+ years. read more

It was our first time to camp at Lake Lopez this summer. This campground is managed by SLO county so there were some restrictions, like no campfires and of course be cautious about your stuff because of wildlife especially bears. The lake was super low during our visit so the water was muddy and not good for swimming. Thankfully, the Munds Water Park (I will do a separate review) is just walking distance from out campsite so there was no need to go to the lake. Plenty of things to do here if you don't want to go to the water park. They have plenty of hiking trails and you can sign up for zip-line activities. The camp ground needs a little TLC but for the price we paid, its not really that bad. I can foresee us staying here again. read more

I camped for a week in the Quail area of Lake Lopez. This campground is huge compared to others in the SLO county system. There were A LOT of people here. Primarily families with tons and tons of children, so lots of noise well into the night. I blame myself, this campground caters to children with a water park, zip line, and obstacle course. Many families completely disregarded the 10pm noise reduction almost every night. The natural beauty is stunning. The abundance of wildlife is amazing. I had a momma bear and cub visit my site at 5am one morning. It was a nerve wracking event, but it turned out totally calm and cool. She lumbered along without incident. The campsites are relatively clean and well kept. The bathrooms are tidy, but could seriously use a new paint job. The showers, $1 for 5 min are terrible! People keep stealing the shower heads so you get a jet of water that hurts when it hits you. I will not be camping here again, mainly because of the number of people and the noise. I really prefer smaller, less crowded campgrounds. The park staff, was really great and super friendly. True professionals. read more

We just returned after enjoying 4 nights in space 22, of the Conejo campground. Here is my two cents on what transpired. PROS: 1) Great, hidden location about 12 miles from town. 2) Our lot had a picturesque view of the lake. Privacy was also good. 3) The marina, including the restaurant/bar/rec room. 4) Showers at the marina were spacious, with excellent water pressure. Not only that, $1 gets you MUCH more time than other sites. 5) Proximity to downtown Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach & Pismo Beach. 6) Pontoon rental was nice, and the water was refreshing. 7) Deer & Wild Turkeys were plentiful. CONS: 1) Bears were out at night, thanks to negligent campers that left food out. This is dangerous, especially when going to the facilities for a late night "tinkle". (Be responsible for your kids & others) 2) The tiered spaces are not very flat, giving your equilibrium a daily test. 3) No warm water in the bathrooms nearby. We did not shower there. All in all, the trip was perfect. Knowing bears were a mere 40 yards from us left my wife worrisome. This location will be removed from future endeavors, unless we stay in an RV or a cabin. read more

Right now it's Lopez Puddle. Got great sites- Squirrel 3 & 4. Walking distance to the restrooms (walked the nieces and nephew a number of times) but far enough away. "Complimentary" (cold) shower- didn't see anyone taking money nor did I desire to see them. No (AT&T) cell nor wifi service unless you bring your own hotspot. (which someone did) But if you're going to go camping, why would you need that sort of thing? Camped next to a family whose kid found joy in pounding the log next to our car with a metal rod and staring at us. To each his own I guess. The swear words from the family adjacent to us got old quickly. We had kids- they had MORE KIDS. Four letter phrases kept on coming...can't let other folks spoil your trip though! If you consider locking your bike up to a picnic table to be "bike parking" then sure, they've got it. Great to see my family, but that's about all this place has going for it in my book. read more

Annual fambam trip to Lopez Lake and I can't believe I have never written a review about this place. We have been going here for over 15 years. So many great childhood memories and now memories us being adults and continuing the tradition. About 20-30 of our family members go for about 3-4 days. So beautiful. The deer, fish, beautiful birds and we even saw a bear this year! Clean restrooms and bathing area $1.00 for 5 minutes in the shower. There is a huge water slide which is great for the kiddos. They have a store and a place you can rent kayaks, jet skis, paddle boards and anything else you can think of that you may need for the water. My uncle has a boat and takes us rafting on the lake. We have such an amazing time here. Memories we will continue to make for years and years. read more

This was a nice summer surprise. First, location brings cooler temps, which we were grateful for. Second, so much wildlife! Deer, turkeys, woodpeckers, hawks, turkey vultures. Great hiking trails. Two negatives: because there are no fires allowed, campers we're using their fire rings for garbage cans. Disgusting. Campsite is nice and organized. Check-in went smoothly, and finding the campsite was easy. It was breath-taking to see the families of deer that would appear in the early morning and early evenings to graze in the fields. Most importantly the restrooms/showers were well-maintained, especially for a campsite, and the water stayed warm the entire time! There were to be a lot of amenities (lake, water park, general store, restaurant) and activities to do here, which we did not get the chance to take advantage of. Lake Lopez in Arroyo Grande, CA is spectacular! So many great things about this campground. Hundreds of spots and tons with full hook ups. Wild turkeys, deer, fishing, are just some of the wildlife you may encounter at the lake. Vista Lago is a ton of fun for the kids with 2 zip lines and various ropes courses that range from novice to challenging. The patio at Vista Lago Adventure Park is a great place to watch the kids and enjoy an ice cold beer. There's also a water park there, but we've never been when it's opened. At the Marina there is a nice general store with a great selection of fishing tackle and all sorts of groceries and supplies. They also have a full bar and restaurant with a deck overlooking the lake that is just spectacular. Rent a pontoon boat, fishing skiff, kayak, or stand up paddle board and spend some time on the water. The campground rates are completely reasonable as it's a State Park and thus very well maintained. We always try to get the spots in the Eagle campground (1 or 2) because of the ample space and amazing view of majestic oaks throughout the canyon. The little town of Arroyo Grande is a great place to spend the day, have lunch, and explore the quaint little shops. Avala Barn is a local favorite spot with a petting zoo (goats, cows, horses, chickens), a country store that sells the most amazing pies, and a bbq take out window that serves SLO's famous tri-tip.
