Ask the Community - Sunbrook Academy

I am a brand new single father that has to have day care and Pre-K for my 3, soon to be 4 year old son. I have read really great reviews about Sunbrook but they are all from years ago. Can anyone give me a very recent review of this facility?

I was in the water with my 8 & 11 year old children because I feel like it is the responsible thing to do when you take your children to a pool regardless of their swim capabilities. I allow my 11 year to attempt the test for fun. The lifeguard wanted them to swim the length of the pool which my children can do. However, the lifeguard would not pass my child because the swim stroke was not perfect. I have personally been a lifeguard, swim instructor, and swim team coach for over 20 years. My children know their strokes but I have not forced them to be on teams or swim long distance. Do I want them to, yes. But I have not forced it. My children have good strokes for more than half the pool distance but get tired toward the end and get sloppy but are not in danger. The strokes just don't look as nice as they did. Our children visit our neighborhood pool just about everyday in the summer and swim unassisted with no issues. It is winter and perhaps the kids are a little out of practice in the 4-5 months since it has been warm enough to attend the neighborhood pool but again, not in danger and swim fine. But not competitive swimmers. We were told that my daughter did not pass the test even though she could swim unassisted the length of the pool. So we just tried to enjoy our time in the pool and planned to try again another day. However, then the lifeguard reprimanded me multiple times because my 8 and 11 year old swimming children were outside of an arms length of distance from me. Again they swim on their own, and I am in the water with them if they need me. The swim test expectations are too high and I now understand why there were no other families there on a Saturday afternoon. The swim test expectations are too high and the lifeguards to strict on their arms length rule for families to enjoy this pool. Again, I have been a lifeguard, instructor, and swim coach for 20 years so I have a solid base of knowledge with which to make this assertion. I attempted to connect with YMCA on this via email. My email was forwarded to the Aquatics Director and I have not received any response. We are planning to cancel this membership as our children cannot go and enjoy the pool because the rules are too strict and I understand this industry better than most. With rules this strict, the lifeguard is really a waste of money as they basically don't allow children in the pool and only adults may swim. I would still love a response but If I do not get one, we will continue with cancelation. Good luck if you have children and planned to use this pool.

They couldn't wait to tell us about everything they had learned and created, which made for some fantastic dinner table conversations all week long. A special thank you to Ms. Simmy and Ms. Miles, who were incredible with the kids. Their enthusiasm, kindness, and ability to make learning so much fun truly stood out. It's clear they care deeply about creating a positive and engaging environment. Thank you to the entire ClubSciKidz team for providing such an exceptional camp experience. We couldn't have asked for a better week and will definitely be back for future camps! Note: they have multiple locations around Atlanta making it convenient for families to find a camp near them. Definitely check them out!

The counselors are mostly younger, college-aged kids, but unlike other camps, they seem to be well-trained in childcare as well as keeping the kids engaged. The kids get to do so many fun activities that are also teaching them important STEM skills in the process. I love the before/after care options are longer to accommodate working parents, as well. We've done camps at the Duluth and Decatur locations, and each experience was just as good. Highly recommend checking this camp out if you've got a STEM fanatic kid, or just need something different to keep them busy for the summer. They might as well learn a little something while being busy :)

The assistant director was amazing. She thoroughly explained the school learning curriculum and everything that I needed to know. I love the way the classes are set up and they have everything you need to know outside each classrooms. Safety is a big concern as well. I love that you must enter a code to enter in the building before even reaching the inside of school. I recently moved and I loved my previous daycare but the distance was an issue. However, looking for a new school that was comparable this was the perfect match. I am not that parent that will drop my child off at any school just because the price, because its around the corner from home or I'm rushing to put my child somewhere asap. I'm willing to pay to put him in a quality school. First impressions are everything and this school has me willing to start him today if I could. I'm excited for his first day of school here and to see how he progress through out the year.

My child was always safe and well looked after but also given independence that was suitable for a 5 year old. She had a decent class size of 20 and two awesome teachers. All three directors were such a joy to work with and communicate with. Breakfast, snack and lunch were provided daily (through Georgia Pre-k program) and I was very thankful she received such health meals and portions. A full menu was listed every single month to view in the lobby. She learned more than I expected and during her kindergarten assessment, the teachers were impressed. She did plenty of hands-on learning in different "centers", play time outside, daily naps (or quiet time if she couldn't nap), and she did so well with the routine. The center itself had safety protocols in place, each parent had passcodes assigned to the to enter the building, and we also used an app to communicate with all staff and teachers. I received daily photos of what my child was working on or participating in. The center was clean, bright, welcoming. They held different events throughout the year where families could attend and enjoy with the staff (I loved being able to be involved!). They also held curriculum nights to learn more about what the children were doing and learning in class. They had plenty of theme days and really kept things "fun" for the families and parents. Even "Muffins with Mom" or "breakfast on the go". Directors Lisa, Leslie and Cheryl were absolutely wonderful. All staff members I came in contact with were always loving, caring, professional. I am truly so thankful we had a great experience and that my child was always safe. We love and appreciate the Laugh and Learn team!
