Verdugo Aquatic Facility - Daughter loves it

Being able to swim more frequently on a beautiful day is such a gift out here! I was on the lookout…read morefor local community pools and went to check out Verdugo at Mary Alvord Recreation Center. Like most community pools, it's in a beautiful neighborhood of Burbank and has some playgrounds and tennis courts near the pool. The locker rooms are kept up really well and the pool's temperature is kept at just the right level of cold and the chlorine level doesn't feel drastic as some places. The staff are great and helpful. The day rate depends on if you live in Burbank or not ($6-8) for lap swim and keep their schedule updated on their website. Bring your own swim gear as they are not provided by the aquatic center! Depending on time of day and when you go, the lap swim can be metered or by yards, as the layout of the pool can change (with kids swim, open swim, aerobics) nearby. Theres also a nice outdoor area for family events or kids birthday parties. Theres street side parking and they have a good size parking lot but it's pretty busy on weekends; people leave frequently and usually are waiting for your parking spot when you head out! A local who has been coming here for years encouraged me to try Mccambridge Recreation Pool (which I have yet to)!

The area is fairly spacious, and there's a pool you can jump into if the playground gets old. The downside, though, is the time limit they impose. They have two playtime slots: usually from 11:30 to 1:00 and 1:30 to 3:00. That's only an hour and a half of playtime, which my kids absolutely hate. Every time their playtime is interrupted, it leaves a bad impression. They enjoy the place, but once they have to leave due to the time limit, I hear about it nonstop. I personally prefer the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center. It offers unlimited play from open to close, but they do a quick equipment check every hour, which is understandable. It only takes about 15 minutes, and once that's done, you can go right back in. Here, you have to leave and buy a new wristband, about $3 per kid to return, meaning you're paying double if you want to stay longer than 90 minutes. This is definitely something they should reconsider, as I'm sure many people aren't happy with this setup.

We originally started our son in lessons at 8 months young but didn't continue on, I highly suggest once you start them keep going. Our son struggled with not wanting to get water in his eyes or even put his head under water but the consistency of coming day after day he got more comfortable. Since these lessons are free the Saturday of swim sign ups you'll see a long line of people attempting to sign up for all the lessons at once. My husband went early that Saturday morning, while I attempted to sign him up online. I eventually got through & he was one of 10 children ages 4-6 to be in the preschool swim courses This time we are going to continue his lessons at one of the year around pools open.

The people at the front are really friendly. It is cash only and they do require that you have a bathing suit. If your child is under 7 they do require that you go inside with your child so make sure you have an extra bathing suit! The parking sucks there I'm not gonna lie it's difficult to find parking there so I would suggest you come earlier to find parking. It is free but there is meter parking as well. The teachers who taught the swimming confidence to beginners are very friendly and help the kids build that confidence in the water. I would highly recommend to sign up the kids during the summer because the classes are free all summer long.

What was frustrating is that we were not allowed to enter the pool at all, and they didn't even offer us the option to join the class instead. We are local residents and cannot easily come back at another time, so this was very inconvenient. If the schedule changes, it should be clearly updated so people don't waste their time coming here. Very poor communication and customer service. And baby cried all morning because I promised him to go there.

Over the last few months, I visited several times, and each time there was a young employee named Vardges who consistently went above and beyond. He was incredibly helpful, patient, and genuinely kind -- the sort of person who doesn't just do his job well but quietly elevates the entire atmosphere around him. What stood out most was the way he interacted with my young daughter. His patience and warmth toward her were sincere and unwavering, and that kind of care stays with a parent. It certainly stayed with me. People like Vardges make a real difference in their community, often without realizing it. I truly hope he gets the recognition he deserves. Thank you, Vardges, for setting such a wonderful example and for making every visit better than the last.
