I love this place. I have been going here for 20 years. They have the best special fried rice, crab Rangoon, and homemade sweet and sour sauce I have ever had. I avoided them for almost a year after their horrible health review (which is why they lose a star), but I couldn't resist and have started going again. The flavor of their food cannot be beat. I am not a big fan of their combo plates. For me, it is all about the special fried rice, crab Rangoon, and SS sauce. Ugh. I feel sick. However, I'm 99% sure this had to do with how quickly I scarfed down my food and NOT the quality of the food itself. Somehow, even after the epic FAILURE I experienced at Hunan Kitchen a few days ago, I was still left craving hot braised chicken today. I did a little digging (not TOO much digging, thanks to Allan's 'North County Gets No Love' list!) and settled on Sun Restaurant. I called in my order, and I was on my way. Having no way of poring over the menu in advance, I went with the old standby -- Hot Braised Chicken. The woman on the phone asked me if I wanted the combination platter: it included the chicken, fried rice, crab rangoon, and a wonton. For the low price of $5.10 (plus tax!), I couldn't turn down this offer. I arrived and picked up my food. I examined the goods in the car. Looked decent. I tried the rice. GOOD! Tried the crab rangoon. Decent...not the best I've ever had, but edible! Finally, I took a deep breath (yes, I'm dramatic like that) and tried the hot braised chicken. It was....tasty! The sauce was tangy and had a bit of a sweetness to it. I definitely could have used more spicyness, though. I like my food SUPER spicy! The food was so good compared to Hunan Kitchen that I practically inhaled it! I guess that's why I felt a little queasy when I headed back into work. Or maybe WORK just makes me sick! (ba-ching!) Anyway, the food was good compared to Hunan Kitchen (sorry to keep shitting on that place, but it really wasn't good!), but not as tasty as other Chinese spots in St. Louis (Bo Fung, Guo Bin, etc.). This might be a regular spot during the work week for me, but I would never make a special trip out here from Shrewsbury. All in all, a pretty solid (and cheap!) spot for lunch. I popped in here to pick up an order and I was IMPRESSED! Sun Restaurant offered one of the best deals I have ever had. We got a half order of veggie lo mein and a half order of veggie fried rice for only $9! What's even better is that the food lasted us for dinner, breakfast the next day, and part of lunch. They also have drive through which is not something I have seen at many restaurants. Great bargain, great food, great restaurant. read more

I went to this restaurant on 1-16-19 I ordered a half order of chicken and broccoli- she charged me $7.12. I knew this was too high because most other similar establishments charge $4.55 give or take 50 cents, I looked for verification of sales price and could not find the item on the menu or on the board. I mentioned this to the lady who appeared to be the manager. she was very rude and said she could give me my money back. I said that was fine. she gave me no cash back but allegedly showed me a void sale sheet. I contacted my bank and to this day I never got my money back--they stole my money!!! The place was dirty and they do not give back receipts to prove they report sales tax even though they charge you sales tax-and only one serve safe certificate was posted but at least four people were working with food and probably not haacp certified read more

Below average. Chicken was VERY good quality, the sauces were ok for the most part. The crab ragoon is made in house- but they left the flavour somewhere else. If they add flavour across the board it would be pretty good. read more

Sun Chinese is in a sketchy part of town (border or Berkeley and Hazlewood) and from the outside appears to be just another hole in the wall. However, once you taste the food you'll quickly understand why this place usually has a line of cars wrapped around the block attempting to order at the drive thru. Visiting family in St. Charles, they wanted me to try these chicken gizzards!! Wow, it was a 20 minute drive to get there but man oh man was it worth it!! Never heard of a Chinese Restaurant specializing in Gizzards!! Got to sit and talk with the owner wile waiting for our order...my uncle has been going there for 30 years so they are good friends! After inquiring about how he came upon serving gizzards he told me many, many years ago they cooked so many chickens, all of them coming with the bag of giblets and he thought he should put them to use instead of wasting them so he put them on the menu, his own special marinate and coating for frying. These were absolutly the best gizzards I have ever had, kinda sweet, tender and just a hint of spice. They also serve them topped with chopped onion which really made a difference. Very, Very nice. While chatting with the owner he told me they fry an average of 2,000 lbs. of gizzzards a week now, so they can no longer rely on the giblet bag they get out of the chicken! If you get chance to stop by do it, you won't regret it I promise. Also very inexpensive, try the Chicken Wings also, they do the entire wing and they are huge. Hands-down best cheaper Chinese restaurant in St Louis! I am not a fan of livers & gizzards...but they were very good! The combination fried rice was excellent with nice chunks of meat & shrimp...great ratio of rice to meat! They actually have real crab sticks here...not bits and pieces like i've had at so many others (imitation crab but good)! Will be back to try more!! This place is quick and convenient for me when it's time for lunch! They also have have a drive through window, which is uncommon for Chinese restaurants but it is very useful. Try the gizzards...add a little red pepper to them; they are the best in town. read more

It pains me to say this, but I used to eat there every time I was in the area. The food is pretty good and cheap. The problem is that my brother is a police officer in the area and he responded to their alarm going off in the middle of the night. When they entered the building, he said all he could say to describe it was that the kitchen appeared to be alive there were so many bugs. He said there were chickens sitting in sinks at room temperature another were bugs everywhere. He said the kitchen was riddled with dirty dishes and that the pans were disgusting and sitting on the stove as of instead of cleaning them, they just come in and fire up the stoves and start cooking again. I have eaten there 100 times and so has my brother and it made me sick to my stomach when he told me this. The people there are so nice and knew me and my family by name. It disgusts me that they would have so little respect for their customers with such a blatant disregard for cleanliness and the health of their customers. read more

lets face it, when it comes to chinese food, who knows how many health violations it has broken, REGARDLESS of its location or who knew so and so. the same health violations are bring broken at ur local mddonalds, u just dont see it bc there are uniforms and attracting colors. anywho the crab rangoon here is awesome. got a little chive thing going. the lo mein is delicious! and the veggies are super fresh, can totally tell. eggrolls are really good. and their rice is pretty tasty. its just one of those things u grin and bear...but dont be fooled and think there is any such thing as a clean rice spot read more

I love Sun. The duck is amazing, fried rice is awsome, egg foo young is one of my favorites. The chicken sandwich and french fries are super good. That's right..a chinese restaurant that serves french fries. I get extra seasoning on them. Its like a salty sweet blend that they dust on the fries, very good. They are always very friendly!
