Sun Ray was terrific. I went to their office and ordered pea gravel for my driveway. Talked to Helen in the office and she was very nice and took my order for 4 cu yds of gravel. Then the following Monday Roger pulled in early and did a great job dumping the gravel along my driveway by letting a bit out as he drove so that all was needed was spreading with a steel rake. I didn't order enough so Roger suggested he go get more. Good call. So I called Helen and ordered more gravel. Apparently with all the rain, it was no problem and Roger had the time to do it. The raised bed blend I received from Sun Ray is horrible! I ordered 6 yards of soil to fill several raised beds I built. After planting all my plants, I wondered why the plants in the raised beds were doing so horrible and the plants I have in pots where I had used store bought mix were doing great. I was using the exact same fertilizer and watering schedule on all the plants. So, I broke out my soil testing kit. The ph of the soil is 4.5!!! I thought my testing kit was wrong, there is no way a landscape supply would sell such acidic soil, so I bought another ph tester and the results were the same. I different areas of the raised bed the ph tests were between 4.2 and 5 with one coming in at 3.5! For those that do not know, ideal ph for most vegetables and plants is 6.5-7, which is what my Fairfield clay soil tests at. Ph is also the slowest component of a soil to change. I will have to add lime to the soil and give it 2 months to incorporate into the soil. Then I have to retest and probably apply more with how acidic this soil is. So for half of my growing season I have to "fix" the soil I paid good money for Another issue with the soil is it is completely depleted of nitrogen. Phosphorus and Potash are high, but almost no nitrogen. This is easier to fix than the ph, but still not acceptable. A third issue is what is in the soil. They say their raised bed mix is half humus and half topsoil. They say their topsoil is the best in the area containing 10% sand, 20% organic material, 70% fine soil. Nowhere listed do I see rocks or clumps of clay the size of a baseball. I specifically bought this soil for my raised beds to avoid the clay soil that is common around here. It appears that their "topsoil" is comprised of a decent amount of clay soil and where do all the rocks come from? They are all fairly small, like fingernail size, but they are everywhere! In two minutes, I picked all the rocks that were sitting on just the surface in a 2x4ft section of my raised bed and got a whole handful of rocks. I counted them. 64 rocks, just on the surface of a small area. Bottom line is that I would have been better off buying some sand and manure and tilling them into my Fairfield clay and putting the plants in the ground. It is too late for me and I am going to be paying for it this entire growing season and hopefully get the soil where I need it by next season. If I buy soil again, it will not be from Sun Ray! read more

I was going to rent a dump trailer before I went here. The staff was helpful and courteous. I had a very disappointing experience with Sun Ray yesterday. I went out & ordered & paid for 14 bags of dirt that my landscaper was going to pick up the next day. After getting pushback, to the point I asked if they really wanted my business, they finally said they would have it ready the next day at 11. When my landscaper got there, it wasn't ready & a guy working there said he was waiting on him so "they", meaning my landscaper & him, could load it. I had specifically ordered & paid for it to be ready so my guy could be in & out. He called me & left. I called out there & asked why my order wasn't ready & the same woman from the day before said "they" were told not to get it ready because we might not show. I told her the damn order had been paid for so what did it matter. I told her to refund the money, I would never do business with them again & that she was being very rude. I bought 4 cu yds of humus thinking it would improve the clay soil . Everywhere I have mixed the humus into the soil, all plants have failed to thrive or died as if the humus were a toxic material instead of soil builder. Not even a single weed will grow where I have tilled this humus into the ground. I tested the humus and it has no Nitrogen. I don't know how to test for what else is in it. I have come here several times to buy the flat stepping stone rocks. Every time I go to weigh them and load them myself, a very nice man comes over and takes over to do it for me. I really appreciate their customer service, and taking the time to load my rocks for me, which saves my strength for unloading them and placing them at home. I have done business with Sun-Ray many times. I have ordered rock, flagstone, soil, and humus on serveral occasions for different projects. Their products are good and so are their prices, but their customer service is downright awful. When you call or go in, even when you know exactly what you want, they try boss you around, act condescendingly, and tell you you should be ordering more. I am a math teacher, I can calculate volume, and I have never ordered the wrong amount...but with every order there is an argument with them trying to boss me around and tell me what I should be ordering! It's very annoying. Now, with my most recent order...they've mixed in the lowest quality gravel/road base with my nice/expensive 1.5 in. grey river stones. Now they've combined poor customer relations with sub-par product. This is not acceptable. read more

I've had dealings with half a dozen landscape and brick/rock firms in Solano County and have to say that this company is the best for several reasons. I checked prices for landscape stones, and Sun-Ray's prices were significnatly less than the firm down the road and the major brick/stone company in Solano County. Plus, when you order two yards of one item or three yards of two items, local delivery is free. If your order is too small to get it delivered for free, delivery is just $20. Outlying areas pay minimal amounts. Beside the price, the folks at Sun-Ray are a joy to work with! They let me hand pick the stones I wanted, allowed me to exchange stones that I found weren't right for my project, and let me return what I didn't use. Jo, the owner, is a pleasure to work with. The guy who helped me load my truck was super nice, and the two friendly fellows who delivered the rocks unloaded the material carefully right where I wanted it all. This company does not have a huge selection but does have lots of different soils, barks, chips, sands, rocks, concrete mix, decomposed granite, gravels, stones, large slabs of flagstone, and boulders. Check them out before going elsewhere. If you call them, they are very good about giving prices and estimates of what you need for a particular job.
