Fire pits and wood available. Great service, privacy, and comfy rooms. Rooms were small, but space well utilized for whatever you might need. It has some character and love behind its New Orleans meats, English Garden atmosphere. If the yard space with corn hole , huge yard chess , six campfire sites with wood provided next to a relaxing Hamic wasn't enough. We had a death in our family and we are still waiting on our deposit that the owner promised we would get in 5 to 7 business days. Its now 7 days and all I get is a run-around from them. Plus I've never heard of a hotel that takes a 50% deposit up-front? I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau on them. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

STAY AWAY!! I can't even give this hotel a true 1-Star. My sister booked this hotel for a family reunion and blocked 16 rooms. Each room was $162 plus tax and came out to $205. I've travelled around the world and this hotel is worst than staying at a hotel in a 3rd world country. Bugs were in several of our rooms, hair on the floors, pee stains on the mattress. The rooms are dirty and not well maintained. Worst part is that my mother who is 91 years old had to go up a long flight of stairs when she has a disability and cannot walk. One of the employees had to help by carrying her. Teri the manager refused to give us out money back. Argued that bugs were normal for this area. The good - the staff were friendly and they have done the best they can with the property they are working with. The pool area was extremely well maintained. The bad - there were numerous bugs on the walls and ceiling when we first got to the room. They were large stink bugs. We spent the first hour knocking them down with a towel so they could be removed without releasing their odors. The wooden floor was uneven and had large chunks missing in some places that were a splinter hazard. The blinds did not darken the room and were essentially worthless. The bed was small, with a saggy mattress. Not the most comfortable. The promised WIFI never worked once. The ugly - if you hate dogs, or if you dislike constantly barking dogs, DO NOT STAY HERE. They were so many dogs staying here during our 3-day stay. Dogs were routinely left alone in the room by their owners and they would bark incessantly. One would bark and the others would follow. The people in the next room left their dog alone all day for two days in a row. Despite complaining about the constant noise, the property manager said there was nothing they could do. That meant we just needed to deal with it. Not acceptable. We certainly don't mind trying quirk, independent places to stay, but this place had too many issues. We have been going to South Haven for years. This trip was going to be a weekend trip so we didn't rent a VRBO but instead stayed here. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. We needed up booking an extra night but had to change rooms and they went out of their way to make sure our new room was cleaned immediately so we could get resettled. Both the rooms we had were clean. They are older but they were clean. The refrigerators did not work the best and every room is set up differently so you won't know what you are getting until you get there. The photos on the website must have been taken several years back because everything looks much newer in the photos than in reality. The rooms are also smaller than they appear in the photos. The grounds are kept up nice and they have grills and fire pits which they provide all the supplies. The pool was well maintained. We like to stay within walking distance to town and the beaches and there wasn't anything walking distance from the resort. Everything was about a 5-10 min drive. Overall we were pleased I just don't think the location works for us. read more

I booked this room using AirB&B, and this is not the room that was advertised to me. When we arrived we were very disappointed. When we finally got to our room it looked like it was a different room than in the pictures. It was dirty, the floorboards are rotting away, there are gaps in between the door/windows and the wall which offer no privacy. To make things worse when we pulled back the bedsheets there were several spiders living in our bed. We made it about 10 minutes in this room before deciding ultimately to go and stay somewhere else. read more

We really wanted to enjoy our quick 2 nights as a place to sleep while we were working a wedding in town. I am a wedding planner with a VERY aggressive schedule over the weekend. All I required was a place to get some much needed sleep after working intense 18 hour days on Friday & Saturday. The rooms are nothing like the photos. I knew it would be tiny but not THAT tiny. My college dorm room was bigger. Regardless of the size, we were just there to sleep. We went out and bought new pillows, coffee supplies & toiletries since there is none in the room During our stay on Friday night, we had issues with the TV, which wasn't too a big deal, but just the start of a series of awful sleep. Its satellite & didn't have reception. The remote didn't work for the tv, only the satellite box (no power or volume control).When getting up in the night to use the restroom, I stepped on earwigs, and realized there were at least 4 on the floor. I tried to get more sleep, as I needed to be up for a very grueling day of work starting at 7:30am on saturday. Early Saturday morning, while in the shower, the fire alarm started going off, while I tried to deactivate it, bugs started falling out of the fire alarm. I thought I had it solved & resumed my shower. It went off again, We had to pull it off the ceiling, while more bugs continued to come out of the ceiling. We made the split decision to check out immediately. I had a very busy day, and could not take up more time trying to figure out a solution. Upon check in we were told the front desk would be open at 8am, which we did not have time to wait for. We vacated the room & I went to work. When we came back later that morning, (after having to rearrange my busy wedding schedule to make the trip back) the interaction we had with the front desk went from cordial at best to downright rude. The woman at the desk told us they were booked full & there was nothing to be done. She told us we should have called the front desk about the fire alarm. I was in a towel, with shampoo still in my hair, and barely covered, I could not have someone in my room at that moment - we were also in a time crunch. She mentioned she could move us to another room, but couldn't tell us if there would be bugs there too. If there was bugs on the 2nd floor, surely there's bugs on the first floor. She told us there was nothing to be done because I booked through expedia (we did not, we booked through United Hotels). She told us we needed to speak to a manager, but then was offended when we asked for the manager's phone number & was shocked we would actually call. I tried calling & emailing, and of course, there is no response. This place is horrible, I can't imagine having wedding guests or a wedding here like they advertise. I'd be mortified. read more

First off, the resort is wonderfully located in a quiet place, yet easily accessible to all the fun spots including Mcintosh Orchards. Secondly, the facility has got unique historic features with a quaint lake and vast yard. That being said, it is not as new as all the glass buildings or corporate lodging spots. But for folks who enjoy a low-maintenance stay close to nature, it was perfect. Thirdly. The staff were just great. I realized I messed up my booking WHILE driving to the facility. Upon hearing our situation, they promptly extended their hands and our vacation was saved, albeit a very very busy weekend at the resort. We look forward to our next stay! read more

We chose Sun N Sand mainly because the options in downtown South Haven were out of our budget range, and partly due to availability. *Tip: If you do choose to stay here, book early, because surprisingly it books up quickly. Driving up the place looked promising... what's the expression: Good from far, far from good?? Check-in process was easy however the front-desk girl was positively unhelpful with tips on the area, restaurant reccos etc. We stayed in room 301 - Lake. Pretty view, and evening sun as you can see from the photo. The room was tiny tiny. Just enough room for a bed, and your luggage. The walls are PAPER THIN. Our headboard was up against the headboard of the room next to ours, where for the two nights we stayed - there was a crying baby. It felt as if she was in our room. I have all the sympathy in the world for parents trying to do their best however I blame the "resort" for no sound-proofing! The washroom was dingy, the TV was from before I was born, and the pillows were flat and lumpy. The bed was comfortable surprisingly. The pool was actually quite lovely. Parking was no problem. For $190 USD per night (high season) the value was just not there for us, and we definitely would not embark on a return visit. read more

We have been wanting to stay here for years but always opted for bb or we rented for a week at a house but this trip was a weekend getaway so my first thought was to call this place! Justin was great in taking our reservation, awesome on check in and accommodating to our needs! The grounds are beautiful and the kids loved to explore and stretch their legs! Free firewood for their fire pits (4!!!), liquor service (required here you can't bring in your own drinks) and a clean salt Water pool that the kids enjoyed!!! We were in the lake house so no smell as others complained about. Clean rooms and odor free! We were offered free ice for our boat ride and the few issues that came up were addressed quickly!!! read more

The saltwater pool and the event space make it a good spot for a group. Staff and owners are hardworking and very accomodating. Keep supporting this business. The staff here were very kind, helpful and friendly. Bob, Ken, Ampy and everyone else who works here are super helpful. We rented out the place for our wedding weekend and they did a wonderful job prepping and taking care of our needs. The pool was the biggest hit and everyone had a blast hanging out there and grilling. The grounds were well kept and really beautiful. I really would love to give 5 stars since the staff and the grounds were amazing, but due to just a few issues I'm leaving a 4. (Electricity issues in a few rooms and a few rooms had ants/other little flying bugs). I look forward to returning though and seeing the updates they have planned! I made a reservation (request) which states they will get back to me if there was availability. They instead charged my credit card in full instead of contacting me. It ain't the Ritz, that's for sure! It's rather quaint...read...small, but a charming "resort" nonetheless. Initially, I tried emailing to request a reservation for a 4 person room. Took more than two days to get a response that they didn't have any for the dates I was interested. Then I called about two weeks later with different dates. Over the phone was much more helpful and they were quite pleasant, turns out. Here's my small caveat. I asked about the room for four because in pictures it almost looked like a suite and I had planned on sharing said suite with my sister, her husband, their infant son and then myself, my husband and our two toddlers. In describing the situation to the lady on the phone she said, definitely go with the bigger option. So we did. Turns out my sister and her family couldn't make it so it was just the four of us....we barely fit in the room ourselves and the fact that it was two rooms might have been a miscommunication or misunderstanding. The only other room in there is a teeny, tiny bathroom. Otherwise, it's two full size beds and that is all the room fits. Our pack n play didn't fit in the room. The good news: we went in the early fall. It is set in amongst a ton of gorgeous trees and the view is lovely. The little pond is adorable to pull up a chair and have a glass of wine. There are two firepits so we had one to ourselves. The pool wasn't open, but also didn't look like we were missing out on a whole lot. If you have plans to be out and about then you are really only sleeping here and if that's the case, it's fine. Just don't expect a ton of bells and whistles. We stayed in the beachouse I think - it was the second floor and I believe there are only the two buildings. If it were just the two of us, I think the cottage would have been more to our liking. I'd go back again, but my expectations would be in check. read more

DISGUSTING! This was our second visit to the Sun N Sand Resort and we will not be returning. We booked two rooms, for us and another couple. The first night I woke up at 3 am with a large bug crawling on my head and then it happened again about 45 minutes later. The second morning, we found more bugs. I emailed the resort when we returned home and did not even get a response from them. The resort has lost is luster and quaintness that we first experienced 4 years ago. My mom, sister, and I decided to take a girls trip to Michigan and found this hotel through a deal site. We were so excited when we pulled up it looked so cute and vintage, a place out of an old movie. We checked in and service was great the woman running the desk was very nice and gave us the low down of the area and a younger boy came right out to us and offered to help us with our bags. The three of us opened the door to the room and it was much smaller than we were expecting, but we were only there 2 nights and so it didn't bother us too much. It appeared to be clean and well kept. After being in the room for about 5 minutes we heard the smoke detector chirp as if the battery were low. My sister went and told the boy and he grabbed a battery off of the table in the check in area and said that they had had problems with this room's smoke detector before. He changed the battery and then started going down the stairs when we heard it again. He came back and fiddled around with it some more and then said it should be good. He left and it started chirping again. We decided at this point to just take the battery out and risk our lives with a fire since they obviously knew of a problem before we even got there, but didn't really want to do anything about it. After our first night we woke up and I took a normal hot shower. Well, as I was in the shower all of a sudden the fire alarm started going off even with the battery out, because the heat of the shower. From then on we all had to take luke warm showers, which wasn't so great. We went out and enjoyed our day and came back that night to a pitch black second floor because none of the lights were on which was weird because they were on on the first floor. We managed to get to our room since it was a corner room right after you get up from the stairs, but if you had a different room it would have been harder to find (as we learned from our neighbors the second night when it scared us half to death as they started punching their code into our lock keypad. When they realized it wasn't their room, we assumed they must have told the staff as the second floor lights mysteriously came on. When we opened our door to our room it was obvious they hadn't cleaned our room because our beds weren't made and there were tea stains in the sink from when we had dumped out some old iced tea earlier that day. Also, when you looked up into the light fixture there were a bunch of dead yellow jackets, so that was special. As if this all wasn't annoying enough, what really got us was the fact that they had the nerve to put a tip envelope for the cleaning ladies, seriously? Overall, it was an ok stay. We weren't expecting the Ritz, but we thought the things mentioned above would be pretty basic hotel owning 101, so thank goodness we didn't pay the standard $125 a night fee and instead got it on our deal site. What's also alarming is we picked this hotel too because it was rated #1 out of 11 hotels in South Haven, so I wonder what the other ones are like. It's really sad, because the staff was very friendly for the most part (slightly different at our check out, when the woman asked us how our stay was and we told her about the fire alarm and she just made excuses and no apologies), and the grounds were beautiful. The beds and linens were some of the coziest we've ever stayed in. The buildings were also darling and you can tell if they just put a little more love and effort into this place, it really could be a wonderful getaway. If they fixed some of these things we would recommend staying here. read more

Nice place! Waterfall is very nice but grasses need to be trimmed as it hides the waterfall. Very nice amenities, hammocks and fire pits with chairs and they provide fire starter and wood, which is very nice! We've stayed her in the past and enjoyed the salt water pool, but this year there is NO water heater. ..water is very cold. Bummed because the lake is freezing right now and with no pool heater you can't really enjoy this pool either. Even tho its July, except to take a quick dip. Not fancy but reasonably priced. Heard rumor it has new owners, maybe that's the reason for cold cold pool. They used to have flower baskets ALL around the porch and it looked so beautiful. but those are gone too. Unfortunately, yelp settings didn't allow me to leave less than one star. My fiancé and I booked this resort for a weekend vacation with family after reading a few positive reviews. Pictures seemed nice enough and the listed amenities almost too good to be true for the price. I would like to note that when things seem too good to be true, it would be best to take a step back and take a moment to evaluate. Now, let me tell you the story of sun and sand...as the mapquest voice announced "you have arrived at your destination" we pulled into an empty gravel parking lot. We exited the car and began aimlessly wandering around a graveyard of trailers completely devoid of human life. Not a single sign beckoned us to a check-in location. After some time we entered what we believed to be a a building containing the front desk. We approached the desk, rang the bell, and an adolescent girl informed us that no outside alcohol was permitted on the premises. You can pick through the website with a fine tooth comb and nowhere will you find a whisper of this policy. We reluctantly signed a contract stating that we would not bring any "outside" alcohol onto the premises. As if it were to be some solace, the girl informed us we could purchase alcohol from the front desk. Mind you, do not envision beautifully crafted cocktails from a resort bar. Available for and overpriced purchase was a poor collection of subpar beer and wine choices in a small mini fridge on the floor behind the desk. After collecting our money, the girl disappeared into thin air and we were once again left wandering aimlessly to our room. We ascended the dry-rotted stairs of the dilapidated "beach house" and found the door to our room. After fumbling with the aging lock, we opened the door and were smacked in the face with the scent of mothballs and mildew. After collecting ourselves from the putrid smell we understood was coming from our room, we were able to truly take in what we were facing. In our resort room was a bed, a sink, and and a small television from the early 2000s. An air conditioner was hanging by the skin of its teeth from the window next to the bed. Each window was encrusted with the shells of crustacean-like beetles from centuries prior. I have never been to prison, but I am certain the size of that room was roughly the size of a cell in Jackson. I sat down on the toilet and as I rose to flush, I was greeted by a large beetle swimming in my urine. I couldn't help but hear the soft hymn wafting through the air "Last thing I remember, I was running for the door I had to find the passage back to the place I was before 'Relax' said the night man, 'We are programmed to receive. You can check out any time you like, But you can never leave!'" Needless to say we left sun and sand even though they refused to give us a refund. They can have my money, because if we were to stay I don't know if we would have made it back from this little piece of hell off of blue star highway. read more

The room was very clean, had everything we needed including microwave & refrigerator, and the bed was extremely comfortable! The rooms are a little small but that was not an issue what so ever, as the amenities and cleanliness completely outweigh the size. Great balcony right outside our door with table and chairs. The grounds were beautiful. We played horseshoes, corn hole, napped on the hammock, and enjoyed the wonderful pool. First of all, this is not a resort by any means of the word. The pictures and description online are very misleading and fabricated. The only air conditioning are old window units. The beds were full beds instead of queen size like it was told online. You have to sign a waiver to not bring any alcohol to the resort unless you buy it from them. Very unprofessional staff and very unhelpful. The rooms don't have keys but combinations to unlock the door which is the room number and then the number 1 so you know everyone's code to get in their rooms. Not secure at all! The rooms were dusty and not clean when we arrived. Very shitty place to stay would not recommend at all! read more

NO STARS DON'T TRUST THEM WITH YOUR CREDIT CARD INFO Terry the manager wouldn't let me cancel my room the week before and I explained to her I had a family emergency. She tried to guilt trip me by saying that the person who booked the block of rooms would get penalized even the week before. I said well I understand and certainly wouldn't want to do that but I cant come up for this wedding and I am calling you a week in advance. Terry said to wait until the wedding was over and she would call me on Monday about my refund. Then I waited until Wednesday, since I thought she was too busy to return my call. Then she tells me some girl name Haley said I said it was okay to stay in my room free. I don't even know a girl named Haley. She tried to say my cousin said it was okay and my cousin said she did not even know her. Terry NEVER even called me to get my permission. She said they called me and I didn't ever answer. I had NO missed calls from them that weekend and NO VOICEMAILS. Who can just take your money and do whatever someone supposedly told them to do. So I left her a message asking her to call me again because this whole this is so bizarre, unprofessional and to be quite frank SHE STOLE FROM ME. I am pursuing this with my bank and inquiring with an attorney if I can also press criminal charges. DO NOT TRUST THIS LADY AND SHES THE ONLY ONE THAT HANDLES THE MONEY. read more

This is a throwback '40's resort/motel so DO NOT expect much more than a comfortable bed and basic necessities. We stayed at this resort 15 years ago with our dog and it has since been remodeled but still needs quite a bit of work. We booked in last minute for the 4th weekend and were pleased to get a room at a fair price. The hotels in town and chains were charging ridiculous holiday prices. First of all, the view of the pond/waterfall was lovely and the sand area looked nice for kids....the pool is a big bonus too and boasts salt water rather than fluorine. Sadly, the Sea Wolf Restaurant which used to be world class is long gone. Our room was sparsely furnished but had an electronic fireplace, small TV, and mini-fridge. The bathroom could have used a new sink. There was rust around the drain and a hole where the a faucet (?) was missing. The water does NOT stay on unless you hold it.....so it was hard to wash and brush. Another thing we didn't like was the 1/2 inch of space under the door so bugs, and maybe even mice could crawl in....I think the room could have used a new mattress and pillows but the comforter was just perfect and clean. No real complaints for the price. If you are not fussy and don't mind a little bit of rustic-ness, why not spend the night here rather than a chain? read more

I am kind of divided on this place. A friend and I stayed in one of the Beach House Suites, which is two rooms with a bathroom between. The rooms were much smaller than they appear in the picture on the site but were very clean. The bathroom was tiny but, again, very clean. When we checked in, there were four or five large bags of dirty linen blocking the entrance to my room. I had to lift my luggage over them to get into the room. The bags remained there until later in the evening. The ad I looked at on the South Haven site said that there was a bar and diningroom. No bar, and the diningroom are evidently only used for events booked there. When I revisisted the site before writing this review, mention of bar and diningroom had been removed. The salt water pool is LOVELY! The "beach" area that overlooks the pond is just a small dug out area filled with sand, but would be a nice place for children to play. The bed linens were clean and crisp but the mattress on my bed was terrible, sunken in and uncomfortable. I notified the desk of this on checking out and they were very apoligetic. The electric "fireplace" in my room did not work. All in all, I would probably stay at Sun 'n Sand again, but I am not sure the Beach House Suite was worth the $159 per night price. It is located within a few minutes of downtown Suth Haven and is a very quiet location, which was nice. read more

We started coming to the Sun N Sand Resort on Blue Star Hwy 6 years ago when my kids were 2 and 5.The place it had just been renovated by the former owner Frank. But each year we find that it's a little less maintained and cared for. It was a sweet little place - a gem really - when we first found it and great for families with small kids. But this year, for it being the Blueberry Festival weekend, I was surprised that the place wasn't sold out like past years. This year the pool needs painting badly, the pool towel basket was empty until we told someone, our bathroom door handle fell off, the non-slip tape strips on the walking ramps are peeled and nearly gone, the ramps need paint, our room never got made up, they've stopped wrapping the flower baskets around the main building and just hang the front. I know these aren't deal breakers but the lack of care has never been so obvious before. Maybe now that my kids are 8 and 11, it's time to head north and explore beyond South Haven. Sun N Sand had a nice run, but I'm not willing to be further disappointed next year. read more
