Denver Decks just completed the work on our new deck. From the very start to the finish the…read moreproject has been great. The new deck replaced an old wooden deck that had seen it's better days. The understructure of the old deck was beginning to fail and the understructure supports the roof that covers most of the deck. Before hiring Denver Decks to do the job we used AI to recommend good deck companies in the Denver area. We contacted four companies, three responded and Denver Decks was one of those three. Our deck is 17' x 20' and the estimates to do the job were similar. We were promptly contacted and set up a meeting with Paul Koehn from Denver Decks. We met with Paul and quickly realized that he was much more that just a salesman for the company. He had built many decks before moving into sales so his knowledge of what is needed for a new deck was extensive, readily available, and we actually enjoyed discussing our project with him. Paul also indicated that Denver Decks always complies with the codes and permit process that exists for such projects in Denver. One of the companies that we contacted said that they do not pull permits for work in Denver and if something goes wrong during the process it would be our fault! Paul had lots of photos of other projects that Denver Decks had completed. The photo collection was extensive, well organized, and included pictures of stairs, railings, deck surfaces and lights that have been used in other projects. It really made it easier for us to decide what we wanted for our deck. After deciding on what we wanted for our deck the deconstruction of the old deck began and we got to meet/talk with Jay (project manager), Mike (site manager) and Jim, the craftsman for our deck. The communication throughout the project was great! The roof, that covered most of the 17'x20' deck, was supported by three 4"x4" posts that were set upon the deck surface that was supported by two 2"x8" boards on edge. I was very nervous that the aging understructure might fail and drop the roof onto the deck. Denver Decks installed 3 caissons to support the new 6"x6" posts that would now support the roof and 3 added caissons to support the outer edge of the deck. Each cement caisson was 19" in diameter and 36" deep. My worries about the roof falling ceased to exist! After the old deck was removed Jim began to build the new deck. I do not have words that can adequately express how impressed we were with the craftsmanship, construction knowledge and care that Jim displayed in building our deck. The skill that he displayed in all aspects of the construction were amazing and the best that I've ever witnessed in all of the projects that I've ever hired or been around. He built our deck the way that I would've built it if I had his knowledge, skill, equipment and his many years of construction experience! Thank you Jim! Such decks are not cheap and the price for Denver Decks to do the job was similar to that of the company that said they would not pull permits! Building a deck is one of those many situations in life where you truly do, "get what you paid for" and we didn't pay a cent until the job was finished to our satisfaction. Apologies for such a long review but a short review just would not do in this case. Denver Decks did a great job for us and we wholeheartedly recommend them for your deck. They can add us to their lengthy list of references who will be glad to discuss Denver Decks with you for your project! Thank you Denver Decks for a job well done!

Even phone records if they would like. I called on Wednesday, July 10, 2024. There was no answer and I left a voicemail. Never heard back from them so I called again on Wednesday, July 17, 2024. I started to leave another voicemail and my voicemail was randomly disconnected in the middle, which was weird (also a feature many networks let you do if you preview the voicemail and decide not to proceed). So I sent a text and he called me back immediately. This part felt better honestly, finally able to talk to someone. I sent him my name and address via text, he will send me date and time options for scheduling. Later a few days later, the team texted me saying they would like pictures instead. This is Friday, July 19, 2024 per the text timestamps (can be provided for verification if needed to Yelp or anyone else). He requested pictures and was obviously not scheduling an appointment. I was not able to take the pictures immediately the same day. They were sent over approx one week later on July 27th as I had a personal emergency to prioritize. Instead of a poor quality pictures, I decided to take my time, do a detailed walk through and take two videos. I even took the time to zip it up for him and upload it to dropbox (public easy to download link, industry used for over 10+ years and intuitive). They responded by telling me that: "Your videos are not viewable. I don't believe I will be the best contractor for you. The major delay of response is not a good first sign for communication for me. Also I am not available to look at your project this week. Let alone start till mid October. I wish you the best and hope your project goes well." This is laughable, they were hard enough to get ahold of the first time, they never came out to give an estimate as agreed in first phone call and then they give me an attitude when I go out of my way to give them a detailed video instead of crappy pictures. Obviously I am proceeding with someone else, but this was a weirdly disappointing experience. This business is blacklisted and blocked in my books and they are not welcome to bid of any of my work, ever. I find it weird they have so many other 5 star reviews that contradict the experience I had so I am exercising my first amendment right to share what happened with me. P.S. I can tell team is not tech savvy with the basics when they request info from you, i.e., you cannot play a video inside a zip file, you have to unzip first.

We appreciated their prompt response with communication. They were open to discussing different ideas and questions for the project. However, this type of project seems to be something they do frequently, which is good. We needed a permit from the city. This slows things down. However, it didn't take too much time to finish the project. I appreciate how they integrated the existing roof line into the new roof. You can't tell it was even there. They did subcontract the roof and gutters. But that's not their specialty, which is okay. They stated they could have done the roof if needed. In all they did an excellent job.

Having Tiaan and…read moreJorge complete the project (backyard deck w/pergola and front steps/deck) is one of the best decisions we've made while remodeling our house. On a personal level, Tiaan and Jorge are two of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Neither hesitates at explaining in great detail what and why they are doing what they are doing. Along the way, they made some great recommendations on how to improve the structures, as well as improve the aesthetics, of the decks. We also had numerous discussions about non-work related topics. Being great friends promotes excellence in quality, and this relationship is no exception. On a professional level, Tiaan and Jorge provided the highest quality work one can imagine. I can't count the number of times Jorge got out his level to ensure perfection. Both Tiaan and Jorge are as meticulous and detail-oriented as can be. Not only are they superb craftsmen, but they are true artists, too. The steps have a flow to them that I had never even thought about. The steps are also inlaid with decking that was used as the picture frame. A subtle, but incredible enhancement. Tiaan also recommended a louvered pergola, which not only checked the box for a covered area over the grilling/table section of the deck during inclement weather, but it can be opened to gaze at the stars at night. Being aluminum, it also checks the box for a maintence-free future. Once Tiaan and Jorge started the work, one or the other or both were here every day and put in a full day's work till the job was complete. Once we complete the landscaping of our yard, they will return to complete a couple minor details that need to wait until then. We've already discussed having them do some other jobs for us. If you need a new deck, don't waste your time calling around. Call Decks By Rhino and your new deck will be the talk of your neighborhood!

This was not a great experience. Initially, I contacted Aaron, the owner, to replace a basement…read moreshower door, after the - likely original - shower stall door started to come off its framing, before my neighborhood handyman (who charges less than half of Aaron's day rate) fixed it. I regret that I didn't simply leave the situation there, keep my old shower stall door/frame kit, and save $1K. However, at the time (June 2024), I had high hopes that Aaron could become my general contractor, for me to eventually hire to renovate my kitchen & bathrooms upstairs. So I hired him to test him, with 5 specific projects: 1) Basement Shower Stall Door/Frame: - Given I was a new homeowner, I had no idea what I was doing, told him as much, and asked for his help. I measured the shower stall, told him some ideas of that for which I was looking, and - given he's a General Contractor, who told me he's originally from New Jersey, and was hired to renovate an entire house in Mill Valley, CA (posh NorCal) during the pandemic, I mistakenly trusted him. He told me to find shower stall kits on HomeDepot.com, have it delivered to the store, then he'd pick it up at the store in his truck, and remove my old shower stall door/frame. What he failed to do was verify the kit I sent him - before ordering - matched the measurements, after I specifically asked for his guidance/help, and he offered to help me. Then - worse yet - he was unethical, unlike my neighborhood handyman, as he never told me during the install that it was the wrong measurement / size, for that shower, installed it anyway, removed my old shower door/frame/kit, without discussing this with me, told me to get out of his way and go upstairs and "trust him," then I realized after he left that it was the wrong size. Worse yet? He removed the tile, grout, caulk, and new paint, and when I contacted him to fix it in June 2024 - before my July 2024 Breast Cancer Diagnosis, hence the delay - he never replied to come fix it. 2) Crawl Space Access Door: - Same goes for this. He told me he has a jigsaw, so he could fix the wood frame and install the door properly around it, that I'd already purchased through my HVAC contractor, only to leave the wood in piece meal around it, allowing bugs to enter my home, which was the entire point of his work. Then he sloppily sprayed fire foam around it, and it looks significantly worse than if I'd just hired my neighborhood handyman with a day rate less than half of Aaron's to do it, in the first place, who I now need to hire to fix it, including creating a wooden frame with a proper fit, flush screws, and a cement bottom, to match the wall. My handyman quoted me $187.50 for 1.5-hours for this specific project. 3) Bedroom Vent: - When my HVAC technician moved one of the vents in my primary bedroom, the base board needed to be patched, as well as the carpet. Aaron bought the wrong base board at the wrong Home Improvement shop, told me that was the only option, only for my neighborhood handyman to tell me - yet again - that Aaron was wrong/lied to me, and that my current baseboard is still replaceable with an exact match, so yet again, I need to hire my neighborhood handyman to fix Aaron's work. 4) Kitchen Calendar Wall Hook: - I know this was simple, but while he was here, I thought he could help me make this more secure, but - yet again - my neighborhood handyman had to re-do it. 5) Flag Anchor Front Porch: - Yet again this was done with the wrong hardware, that was not aesthetically pleasing, so my neighborhood handyman re-did it. Overall, it's not just the fact that Aaron's rate was near double my neighborhood handyman, it's not just the fact that he made numerous mistakes, after reassuring me I could trust him, as I told him these were test projects for bigger scale work, it's the fact of how Aaron handled the mistakes, by ignoring me, hiding the shower door mistake, and refusing to fix the mistakes, over 1-year later. Whereas, my neighborhood handyman has made mistakes before, and he owns up to them, and fixes them without any issues. We're all human. :)

Aaron paid close attention to detail at every step of the project, was on time every day, did the setup and cleanup well, and also paid attention to safety. To boot, he's a nice, friendly guy as is his nephew Jayden who assisted on the last day of the project. Highly recommend.

Unfortunately, that kind of deflection and blame-shifting is exactly what we experienced throughout the entire project. It should also be noted that many (if not all) of the favorable reviews on this site have been written by Stonebridge employees and family members. The initial sales pitch was good, and then the job started. They misrepresented the cost-plus mark up on the job. They implied that had schematic design capabilities, but did not. They said they had top-notch subcontractors but in reality they were mostly inexperienced and poorly managed. The project construction manager was inexperienced, antagonistic, and said that he did not read emails which became obvious due to the constant mistakes, delays, and complete lack of accountability and the number of re-do's on the job. The most serious issue was with our master shower. Stonebridge assigned the installation to Morrow Flooring, a subcontractor with whom they had no previous experience. Both Morrow Flooring and an independent licensed professional later confirmed that it was an "installation failure." The shower pan did not drain properly, the tile walls were uneven, and worst of all--upon removal, we discovered that Morrow Flooring had installed an incompatible drain system without our knowledge. This deviated from the agreed-upon plan and caused functional issues from the start. The only solution was a full tear-out and rebuild, which cost us $15,000 out of pocket. Additionally, our hardwood floors were significantly damaged due to negligence. The construction manager taped protective Ram-board directly to the flooring, which destroyed the finish across the entire upper level of our home. When we raised the issue, the construction manager dismissed our concerns, blaming it on "tape residue." It wasn't until we brought in our trusted hardwood floor installer for unrelated repairs that the full extent of the damage was discovered. While Stonebridge acknowledged responsibility and agreed to reimburse us, they have not followed through on that promise to this day. Finally, while we were in negotiations to reach some sort of settlement, it became increasingly clear that Stonebridge had no real intention of reimbursing us for our damages. Every attempt at compromise was met with new, more onerous demands, along with outright bullying and accusations--ultimately leaving us no option but to end negotiations and consider legal action. If you value your home, your time, your money, and your peace of mind, do not hire Stonebridge or Chris Tolar. The lack of professionalism, substandard quality of work, and refusal to stand behind their own mistakes make this contractor one to avoid at all costs.

We hired Stonebridge Builders for a major home remodel based on their promise of being a "custom…read morebuilder" with top-tier subcontractors, strong supervision, and a commitment to quality. Unfortunately, our experience was anything but that. Due to the blatant lack of communication within the Stonebridge team, we had to re-explain the scope of work multiple times. Instead of taking accountability, Stonebridge blamed us for "changing the scope," when in reality, they misunderstood it. One project manager even admitted to not reading emails, which led to repeated mistakes and miscommunication. The job suffered from delays, poor workmanship, and repeated re-dos. There was little oversight or quality control, and subcontractors often lacked experience. When we raised concerns, the owner, Chris Tolar, refused to take responsibility--often pushing back by saying our expectations were too high and that the work was "workmanlike quality." We had to push hard on nearly every detail just to get things done right. There was virtually no proactive quality management--only fixes when we insisted. We've shared photos of the results so others can judge for themselves. Also, be aware that many of the five-star Google reviews appear to be from employees or family members. If you're looking for professionalism, accountability, and high-quality results, we recommend looking elsewhere.
