We were really looking forward to eating at Summit Smokehouse since I was very much in the mood for a brisket sandwich. It's located at the peak of the mountain at Northstar California Resort, which is a nice setting and looked like a really nice spot for lunch during our ski day. When we arrived for lunch between 1:30 and 2:00 PM on a Saturday, we wanted to get in pine but the restaurant employee in the end of the line told us that those are the past people ordering and the kitchen will close now. According to their posted hours, they officially open until 3:00 PM, so I really did not expect the kitchen to be closed that early on a busy weekend afternoon at a ski resort. It was extremely frustrating and honestly disappointing -- especially after planning for it and being excited to try the food. We didn't even get the chance to order anything. Maybe the food is great, but if the kitchen closes this early on a Saturday, that should be communicated more clearly. As it was, it completely missed expectations. read more

What a great location to take a break from hitting the slopes! Even on a Sunday it was not too busy. There are a lot of chairs to lounge in outside on the snow as well as some seating inside at family style tables. Ordering food is easy to do, just have your Epic Pass available to scan (either a hard copy, or use the app on your phone) to get the 20% discount. The bar has a decent selection of drinks and they can make you a great cocktail for loosening up after shredding some black diamond runs on the backside. I ordered brisket loaded tots, and they were topped with brisket, coleslaw, and BBQ sauce. On the table was some more sauce if you want to sweeten it up some more. My friend and I are long-time Epic pass holders and stopped into the Summit Bar yesterday excited to celebrate closing day with a simple glass of champagne. From the moment we walked in, Lindsay seemed visibly irritated by our presence. It took her several minutes to stop chatting with her coworker before even acknowledging us. What followed was, without question, the most unprofessional and hostile interaction I've ever had with a member of waitstaff. As someone with 14 years of experience in hospitality, I cannot fathom speaking to another human (let alone a customer) the way she spoke to us. From the start, she made it clear she had zero interest in basic courtesy. When we asked if they had champagne, Lindsay rolled her eyes dramatically and snapped, "No. There's no champagne, it's closing day obviously" with zero effort to offer an alternative or even be remotely polite. I then asked if they had rosé, and instead of answering, she mocked me and said "What did I just say? Do I need to spell it out for you?" Her tone was sharp, sarcastic, and clearly intended to belittle. I was stunned by the level of her condescending tone. I quietly noted that rosé is an entirely different beverage and asked if the mid-mountain lodge might have any. That's when she cut me off, scoffed and barked "How would I know what they have down there? I clearly don't work there, I work up here." She said loudly, sarcastically, and with a smirk; as if humiliating guests was her personal form of entertainment. The escalation didn't stop there. When we asked for her name due to how unnecessarily hostile and loud she was becoming, she covered her name tag and said she wasn't required to give it. Then, in a moment so childish and inappropriate it left us speechless, she snapped her fingers at us like we were dogs and aggressively pointed toward the door shouting "You need to go. Now. Get out! Leave!" repeating herself over and over, loudly enough to draw attention from everyone in the lodge. Other guests stared on, appalled and confused. We walked outside visibly shaken up when another guest said he saw her name tag said Lindsay and that he was stunned by her treatment towards us. We thanked him and decided to ride down to mid-mountain. Thankfully, the bartender down there greeted us warmly, no theatrics, no attitude, just kindness. She poured our celebratory drink with a smile, showing that the issue was never our request, but rather the person behind the Summit Bar. We told her what happened, and she was visibly appalled. She apologized on Lindsay's behalf, confirming her name to us as well. To Northstar management: Lindsay should not be representing your mountain in any capacity. Her behavior was disgraceful; deliberately rude, needlessly aggressive, and in direct contradiction to the high standards Northstar is known for. I understand that everyone can have an off day, but this wasn't that. This was targeted, unprovoked hostility toward two polite guests asking basic questions. One toxic employee like this can seriously undermine the reputation and goodwill you've spent years building. I sincerely hope this is addressed appropriately, because no guest should be treated the way we were. read more

This review is not just on food and drinks offered, but more on the level of customer service. I have visited this spot multiple times over the ski season, and every time I see staff go above and beyond, one employee in particular- Lindsay. She works at the bar, her and her coworker (male) are on always on it. Fast, efficient, yet friendly. Prices are high, but that's expected when at a resort. This past visit I actually lost my cell phone on the mountain and Lindsay was so kind and helpful, giving me some ideas how to trouble shoot. They have 10% off after 2PM for season pass holders so remember to show your season pass unlike my boyfriend who forgot and ordered the wrong food the second time. The food is a great value if you get and share the BBQ plates with tri tip (delicious for the location) and brisket which was just okay and a little dry. Of the sauces I liked the classical one and the mustardy Carolina one the best. The corn bread was delicious, I highly recommend that for the side, as the Mac and cheese was forgettable. The fries were fine as well. The second time we were here my boyfriend got us the chili with another chili side. Both were way over overpriced and not that good, especially considering you could get a giant plate of BBQ for about the same price. Beware! read more

Delicious BBQ at the top of the mountain. Even more expensive than you'd expect, though. Beware: they have raised all of their prices, but as of Dec 15 2019, have not updated the menu. When I noticed I was charged more, the manager just said, "oh yeah, we haven't update the signs," and seemed surprised when I expected them to honor the advertised price. Mac n cheese was great. I came here a few days ago and boy is the line always super long. I ordered the $18 smoked ribs entree and was pretty happy with the meat itself. The coleslaw was underwhelming and the cornbread was decent. The side of beans was disappointing as well. My friends weren't a fan of the mac and cheese sides. My friend ordered the brisket and she said it was just ok. I ordered the turkey entree a few weeks back and it was so dry drenching it with sauce didn't help. My other friend said the mushroom entree was good. All in all, don't expect amazing food. Treat the food as fuel and you won't be totally disappointed. I've been here twice so far for the ski season and between December to January, they still don't have it down. Employees are scrambling in the back and the lines don't move fast. The employee apologized as they are still working through kinks. I'm not sure if I'd eat here again. Btw, I miss the black bean veggie burger. Two stars for the smokehouse food, one star for the "bar" section. First, the food. The smokehouse food ranges in price from $8 for some lackluster sides like mac n cheese, to $16 for sandwich with your choice of pulled pork, smoked brisket, or smoked turkey, to $24 for a meal with choice of meat plus 2 sides. Their smoked meat is ok. Even at high altitude, and hungry from hitting the mountain, the flavor all around seems lacking. The line wasn't very long, and can't ever be that long for that matter because the space inside is very small, but moves very slowly. Service was good and attentive at the food line, their saving grace. Second, the "bar". It took a very long time to get any attention from the 2 bartenders, if you can call them that. No shots or on the rocks drinks allowed, and neither seemed to know how to make a mixed daiquiri or margarita. The only kind they knew were frozen, and needed a blender, which they lack. There's some signature drinks with tongue in cheek names like Dirty Snowman, ranging from $12 - 18, but all made with well liquors. The bartenders' knowledge seemed to be restricted to the signature drinks menu, and basic highball mixes (liquor + some soda). Expect a simple name brand highball mix like Jack and Coke to run about $22 with tax. For that price, I could bring a whole bottle of Jack! I thought I remember this summit eat spot was better last year, but can't find details on what it was before. Northstar in 2018/19 season seems to have changed a lot of its food options, so far for the worse. read more

Cozy lodge style restaurant on the mountain. Really good Bacon Bloody Mary (it has blended smoked jalapeños and local Outlaw ale in it apparently :) and awesome waffle chili fries. My husband really his tri tip sandwich. We went for later season skiing and didn't encounter any kind of waits for drinks or food. read more
