My first session, we did basic stance on sand then we were in the water with an instructor who was pushing me onto waves. He just kept talking with other instructors and wasn't really teaching me anything. When I asked questions on form or technique he'd give me short answers in an agro tone. During one of the wave rides I fell off the board and it hit me in the throat and I was under water for a little. No one noticed lol not one instructor. Maybe because they were too busy talking about the surf spots like to go to. Second time my session ended up being on a day of a storm and the waves were insanely big. They still got us out into the water - I was scared since it was my second timer ever. I think it was stupid for them to hold the session instead of offering to come back another time. I could barely get over the waves and was flipped over multiple times. When I come out to Rockaways I always see that instructor I had my first session with and he acts super agro still. Maybe he doesn't like women bc he seems to get on with the guys. Don't know what the deal is but I'd recommend doing a session with a private instructor in the area instead of this school.

We did it on the beautiful Manasquan River, which felt really private. Sandy has such a friendly, warm spirit and her yoga sequence on the SUP board was meditative and restorative (I think she knew just what I needed that day). Don't be fooled--it's a great workout too. What an amazing program. The owners Melissa and Chris were so warm and friendly and all the coaches were great with the kids in and out of the water. The energy was amazing. They kept the kids engaged the whole time. By day 3 my daughter was confident enough to start catching waves on her own. My son watched and decided when camp was over that he would do a private session with his sister. Their coach was Jason and he was great and my son loved it so much that we booked another and this time with Julian. My daughter had Julian as a coach during camp and she liked him a lot, he made her feel comfortable from day one. The surf shop has all your surf needs and more. The cutest apparel and accessories plus really friendly and knowledgeable customer service. I highly recommend Lucky Dog Surf and can't wait for camp again.

I've surfed before, but wanted to try this school out since it's been a while and was unfamiliar with the waves. I did the $90 group package and it was definitely worth it. They provided the wetsuit and board, so all you had to bring was yourself. The instructors were super friendly and encouraging. The guy I had did a really great job of just simply explaining key points so you can get on your board and ride. The amount of time spent surfing is plentiful and you will have a ton of chances to ride nice waves. My recommendation is to google the wave heights and coordinate the best time to ride. Would definitely do it again, and I think for next year I'm contemplating on buying a 10-pack package so I can go more often. Surfs Up!

They provide thick hooded wet suits (with shoes and gloves) that keep you cozy (for reference, it was mid 50 degrees when I went). Shawn (or Sean?) took time to teach me how to paddle effectively and to pop up on the board. Shoutout to Kwame too for helping me even get into my wetsuit. He helped me get going on so many waves to the point where I felt like I could get the hang of it. The only tip I can provide is make sure you are ready for an intense workout! I would start off with a 1 hr lesson private first lesson if it's your first time and your cardio levels aren't up to par (like me). Overall, I definitely recommend checking out NY surf school. I actually started looking into lessons with a competitor (Locals surf school) but my class was cancelled last minute and they never followed up for rescheduling. I'm glad I took a chance and booked with NY surf school instead. Looking into lesson packages too!

Can't complain about that! There's plenty of street parking right in front of the boardwalk as well as residential parking nearby. Since I visited after the summer season ended, I had no problem finding a spot at 12pm. If you're going during the season, I would suggest coming much earlier if you want to get a good spot closer to the beach. During the summer season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), beach badges are required from 9am-5pm on weekdays and 9am-5:30pm on weekends/holidays. It's $13 per person. Children ages 11 and under + active military and their dependents are free of charge. They don't accept credit/debit cards, so remember to bring CASH. The beach is beautiful - clear, blue water and clean, soft sand. The crowd is more mature and family-oriented. They do have a lot of rules (no alcohol/smoking/cannabis/canopies/tents/sound systems), but I don't mind. It's not rowdy here, so you'll have a peaceful experience. There are bathrooms, a playground area for children, and a boardwalk. The boardwalk is small, but charming. There are benches for you to sit, relax, and enjoy the ocean view. There aren't many restaurants, bars, games, or entertainment around. They have a snack/food pavilion, but I'd suggest driving a few miles away to Asbury Park or Long Branch for a better dining and night life scene. Seeeeee yaaaaaaaa at the shore!
