They don't toast the pita bread. They are Gyro (lamb) is very good the kebab (beef) and I would preferred My meat more chard. They're not perfect however there's no place else on Staten Island you can get a decent tahini sauce on your kebab or anything else for that matter. I've been told by regular they never see people come in and out but theyre still staying busy so I assume they make a killing from delivery and within the first 15 minutes of being thereI was proven right; the phone didn't stop ringing and the delivery kid was all over the place. The hummus was freshly ground chickpeas I could tell cause it was a couple of chickpeas that had escaped the grinding it was garlicky lemony with some green herbs. The lamb itself was crispy and tender on the inside. the mixed meat grill consisted of lamb chops, minced meat kofta, grilled beef grilled chicken and shavings of lamb shawarma. It was served on a bed of yellow rice and a side salad of tomato cucumber and lettuce. The entree itself was good for 2 people but I will probably order double just in case. There's a nice selection of dessert and Mediterranean Teas. The service was good and kept coming back to us asking whether you were happy. This is definitely a smaller operation so be patient it's definitely worth the while. There is a free delivery as well good to know. As a first time review of Sumac I would highly recommend this place. We stopped by Sumac as we had a yearning for falafel. My wife ordered pickled vegetables and a falafel sandwich and I ordered the falafel sandwich and a lamb gyro sandwich. We received a Meze platter and a side order of pickles and the sandwiches. The stuffed rice grape leaves are served very hot which we were not accustomed to and the lamb gyro had a hot Mayo type dressing. The pitas were a little old. Awesome little find on Forest Avenue. Small space dishing out delicious Mediterranean food. We have tried almost everything on the menu and haven't been disappointed. Chicken shawarma is one of my favorite. Falafel sandwich is delicious too. I came in here to bring my family for a quick bite before grabbing ice cream and have no regrets! The food was absolutely delicious, i had the shrimp gyro and it was yummy. The rest of my kids and husband had the chicken shawarma. I don't eat meat, but based on how fast they ate their food i was able to tell that it was great especially because my boys are picky eaters. We were extremely disappointed by not only the two hour wait for delivery but in the quality of food from this place. The food was cold, the portions were extremely small - it seemed as if someone had already eaten half of the meal. Additional what was left of the food was old and the salad was brown and spoiled. When my fiancé called them to try to get our order redelivered we were first told that there was nothing we could do and then we were yelled at and told that there is nothing wrong with their food no one ever complains and they hung up on us. This isn't Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or Arabic food. This is garbage, plain and simple. For those of you who've eaten here or will eat here do not be fooled into thinking this is authentic food. Try any other Middle Eastern restaurant on the planet or even a friggin' food truck and you'll know what I'm talking about. It should be a crime to disguise brown sewage as Hummus. The staple of any Arabic restaurant, Hummus, and these fools can't even get it right. I ordered the Falafel Platter, Muhammara, 3-way Labneh, and Kunafa, which is a dessert. Anyone who knows Kunafa knows that it's an Arab cheese pastry with sweet syrup and pistachios, which is what it says on their menu. Google it and you'll see exactly what it should look like - like a thin slice of pie with a layer of cheese, pastry, and pistachios. Instead I got a shriveled string pastry, similar to Kunafa but in a circular shape with nuts not pistachios and no cheese. When I called, the order taker on the other line said, "I don't know how Kunafa's supposed to look like but that's Kunafa. The cheese is made in the dough." What!?!? Are you kidding me? Instead of 3-way Labneh, they sent Hummus. Fine. Let's try it. Brown water. Absolutely disgusting with the wrong consistency and no flavor. Next. Muhammara? Watered down red pepper. Not surprised. Now the Falafel, the main dish. I opened the container and found a pile of yellow rice with 4 pieces of burnt brown balls on top. Against my better judgement, I tried it. Yup. Dried-up turd. I dipped it into the tahini, hoping to drown this black rock with flavor. Think again, sucka! The tahini tasted like someone gargled with it then spit it back into the container. This place is a real disgrace. I was actually excited by the idea of having a restaurant with a decent Mediterranean menu nearby, but if you can't even get the staples right, it's time for you to close up shop and find another business. Ordered from Sumac today through Grubhub based on the majority of reviews on here. The mixed reviews were right- some of the food is great, some not so much. (-1) Star right off the bat because my order took over an hour and 15 minutes from when it was placed. GH estimated 40-45 minutes. I live less than 2 miles from Sumac & most of what I ordered were cold, pre-made dips. Restaurant definitely lives up to its name, as the Turkish spice is heavily used. If you've never tasted Sumac, it's really tart and used in place of lemon in a lot of middle eastern cuisine. That being said, the chef had a very heavy hand with it in all of the dishes I tasted today. Falafel- Too dry. Way too dry. Burnt breading on the outside. Couldn't taste the inside because of that bitter, burnt flavor. Hummus- One of the better hummus (hummuses, hummi?) out of the Mediterranean and middle eastern restaurants on Staten Island. Babaganoush- This was actually delicious. Muhammara- Gross. Looked unappealing and I'm not sure what even was in it. Roasted Pepper & Walnut Dip- Tasted exactly like it sounds. I liked it. Tzatziki- Tasted good, but was really runny. Sumac Fries- Not bad. Soggy because of the tzatziki and feta on top. Should've probably been fried a little crispier to hold up. Pickles- Had an off-taste to them. Wasn't a fan. Chicken Shwarma- Surprisingly good. Really large portion for the price. Overall, I WOULD order from Sumac again, if I wasn't starving & was willing to wait forever. Small establishment. Came here with my friend who's Egyptian and we had desserts. We had the Baklava and Kunafa. The Baklava was amazing and so was the Kunafa, I only wish it had the cheese in it. I had ordered a Turkish coffee thinking it was the same as "American" coffee, but I wasn't a fan of it. We also smoked blue mist hookah. Not bad at all. The food at Sumac is wonderful & delicious. The service at Sumac is not. I STRONGLY advise that anyone looking to eat their food either eats at Sumac or picks it up themselves to take it home. Reason being is that Sumac does NOT have their own delivery driver. They are piggy-backing on another restaurant's delivery guy next door to them to use to make their deliveries. While this does not sound like a big deal, it seems like their orders are last in priority and get delivered extremely late & very cold. When I contact Sumac on this via telephone, they have a very non-answer response and keep telling me 10 minutes, 10 minutes etc. Meanwhile, they have no idea where the driver is because it is not their driver.
