Ordered this food to go and it was yummy! I got the Greek salad with chicken kebab on top and I also got a special item they had (you probably have to ask periodically if they have it as he said it was for catering) which was branzino (fish) over rice with roasted almonds and rice. The Greek salad with chicken was super fresh. The chicken was juicy and well cooked. The branzino was delicious but my biggest issue was it was mostly rice and a very small amount of branzino. I paid about $19 for it so I was at least expecting a fuller piece of fish and it was only a few pieces over rice. But what was there was well cooked, tasty, and fresh! Would come back for the full sit down meal for next time!

We had a great time here. The staff is delightful and super excited to talk about their food. We tried the spinach pie (great), the dip w yogurt, garbanzos, little spiced up pita crisps, and pine nuts. There was a lot of it and it's so good we finished it off! This is a must-try item when you go. Also a must try? The stuffed grape leaves had the perfect ratio of rice and spices, lemony zest and firmness (they didn't fall apart on the first bite). For meat, tried the chicken shwarma wrap which was tasty but probably should have used more garlic sauce. I'm an omnivore but would be certain to be satisfied taking vegetarians or vegans here and skipping meat entirely. The ambiance is cute and clean. We were fortunate to find street parking easily but it may be tough on weeknights when Highland doesn't allow parking during rush hour. All in all, a very nice experience and maybe most importantly these days, the prices made sense for the portions!

Delicious food and super nice staff. We live in the area and decided to walk to this spot to get some dinner. Food was amazing!!! Limited on alcohol selection but they just got their liquor license so I imagine next time will have more to choose from. We will definitely return. Thank you Sumac!!

We came in and ordered the food, specifically chicken shawarma. We waited for 45 min. I was hungry and it was just a big disappointment to wait for 45 min for a simple food. About the shawarma. One of the worst in my life, I'm sorry that I have to say that. It's so weird, basic, and free of taste that I had no chance but write this review. After my order I didn't have any desire to try anything else. If it's long wait time but tastes good - it's ok. But damn ... if you give that kind of shawarma and force people to wait for it for 45 min ... that's frustrated

This restaurant opened recently, taking over the Highland and Lexington corner that had been various other restaurants over the last few years. At present, they have a couple well-spaced tables outside, and one or two more inside. The inside has a bit of a boutique vibe, as they seem to sell some clothing and other items as well. There's a QR code on which to grab the menu, and I ordered at the counter. All of the staff seemed super friendly. I got the chicken kabab plate, which came with a choice of hummus or baba ghanouj, along with pita, French fries, rice and pickles. I also subbed in a Greek salad for the choice between fattoush and tabbouleh at their suggestion, and I added a side order of falafel, as well as baklava for dessert. Probably more food than I needed, but I wanted to try more things rather than fewer. After ordering, I sat outside, and in timely fashion, my meal arrived. At present, they're putting everything in takeaway containers. While I would assume that's because of the pandemic, in a couple cases--that of the falafel and the Greek salad--the relatively deep containers made it a little tricky to cut things. In general, the food was quite good. The star was the chicken, which was perfectly cooked and flavorful, especially when you slather on a bit of the garlic sauce that accompanied it. Also, the accompanying rice was delicious, and I appreciated the acidity of the pickles. The falafel was good--though it could have been a little more tender and moist (perhaps it was slightly over?). In hindsight, I should have just picked it up and dipped it in the tahini rather than trying to cut it first. The baba was also good, and the pita was fine but probably the least interesting part of the meal. I actually preferred dipping the French fries in the baba--which I did by accident--to using the pita. The Greek salad was refreshing, but at present it's being served in a round takeout container that makes it harder to eat than it could be; the high rim means it's hard to cut these large chunks of feta, peppers and other items, or to toss the dressing well. Obviously, in a perfect world they'd move away from disposable containers altogether, but in the interim, a wider, flatter container/plate/bowl would make this salad easier to eat. This stretch of Highland is fairly quiet in terms of pedestrian traffic as it gets later (plenty of cars, and they can get loud), though if you're eating outside, be mindful of your surroundings--it's Hollywood. All in all, a nice addition to the neighborhood. I'd certainly return to try other things.

It is absolutely NOT the best Mediterranean place in town, everything wilted and NOT fresh. When we walked in, there was only one table with customers so it was empty. By the time our food order was taken, 17 minutes past despite being completely empty which would be normal for a busy restaurant, but there was NO ONE except 1 table. We did not feel valued at all and sat there waiting around. Once ordered, the salad was wilted and NOT fresh, like it was the last few pieces out of a bag that was about to go bad and yet still served to paying customers. The food (steak) was cold and stale and the PICTURES on the screen are NOT an accurate representation of the quality of the food - it is WORST than a fast food food chain. I love Falafel and am very familiar with Mediterranean cuisine but they served the WORST burned Falafel with absolutely no flavor either. It's like you were eating a stone-hard cookie without any flavor. There was a theme that everything we ordered seemed "old" and nothing fresh. We were excited about this place but left extremely disappointed and will not go back. read more

called ahead of time to ask what oil they cook with and the boy on the phone told me they cook with just olive oil-- this is the only reason we chose to go here instead of somewhere else (i have a sensitivity to canola oil). we got there and after asking about the oil again in person, found out the food is cooked with canola oil; it was whatever, i overlooked it. the food was decently good, however, they kicked us out 45 minutes after seating us/less than 10 minutes after serving us our entree with no warning-- SUPER uncomfortable. the boy did not give us enough to-go boxes, so we asked for more and he told us to put our food in the same box... after asking again *multiple* times, he finally gave us more boxes. the chef stared us down while standing passive aggressively next to the door as we packed up all our food into to-go boxes, still in shock of what was happening lmao. he made a bunch of weird comments while we were gathering our things-- the ambiance was quiet and awkward otherwise, so in all it really wasn't worth it at all. won't be coming here again. advice for the restaurant: if you're going to kick out your customers at 9pm sharp, you should at least warn them before abruptly dropping to-go boxes at their table and telling them they have to leave. also, can't help but feel like you shouldn't be seating people at 8:15p without telling them they will be kicked out at 9p sharp. just a thought! was a very unpleasant dining experience overall read more

Fantastic find in Weho. The baba ghannouj was outstanding, with excellent olive oil and pomegranates, and the most delicate pita I've ever encountered. I had the beef shawarma wrap and my wife had the falafel wrap, and both of us were delighted with the flavors and textures. And the baklava a revelation. I stopped by Sumac when I had a craving for Mediterranean food and was not disappointed. It's a nice little spot in Hollywood with a casual atmosphere and pleasant service. The food was the best part though (that's the main attraction anyway) I ordered a gyros plate and wow the lamb meat they use is so flavorful and tender. Really showed what you can do with authentic cooking as you can find a mediocre gyro anywhere but not here. The baba ganoosh was also very tasty as an appetizer. I will definitely come back for a second round. read more

I was in the area and was in the mood for some Lebanese food. Walked in and was greeted right away, very cozy spot and I could tell that it was a family business right away. I really wanted to like this place. Their instagram page looks delicious, the restaurant itself was very warm and inviting, the food however was poor. I ordered a very basic taboulleh, humus and ground meat kebab with rice each of which is a staple of the cuisine. 1) Taboulleh was not washed correctly so you could taste the grit the herbs were grown in and it lacked any citrus. 2) Humus was very good. The bread that came with it was however dry and thin and probably not freshly made. 3) The meat kebab was also flavorless and too fatty to making it very chewy. The accompanying rice was soggy as if it was overcooked. $38 for the three items was a cheap price to decide the whole experience was not worth repeating. Why 2 stars and not one star.... well it had a nice ambiance when I went in to pick up my food, the service was warm and the humus was good. read more

Sumac is so delicious! I didn't expect the inside to be as cute and clean as it is. We got the tabbouleh salad which was so fresh and tasty. Loved the lentil rice and crispy onion with the yogurt dip. We wanted a little bit of everything so we got the falafel with humus, babaganoush, techina and tzatziki. Everything was fresh and tasty. I wish the pita and rice came out hotter it was lukewarm. Oh we also got the lentil soup, that was puréed, I didn't like how it was puréed and it was too much sour lemon and not hot enough. Overall great place and I can't wait to go back! read more

May just be the best gyro wrap I've ever had! Came with a Mediterranean salad and rice that made for equally fresh and delicious sides. The Tzatziki sauce was outstanding! The worst Mediterranean restaurant that I've been to. Not sure why this place has such a high 5 star rating. At the server's suggestion, we ordered the chicken kabob plate. We also ordered the chicken schwarma plate. Chicken kabob at other restaurants usually means grilled but this one tastes and looks pan fried with zero grill marks or no grill flavor. Schwarma at other restaurants might mean roasted meat from a vertical spit but tasted closer to shredded dry chicken with no flavor. The pita was thin and arrived cold on the table. The hummus and garlic sauce was also not great either. Even Trader Joe's hummus tastes better than this. The rice was as so wet that it had the consistency of Chinese congee or cream of rice. There are so many other great options for Mediterranean food in the area so this was very disappointing. read more

Sumac is a hidden gem in the heart of Hollywood. My friend and I gave it a shot after seeing all of the great reviews and this place exceeded our expectations! The owner, Eli, was exceptional and gave us the VIP experience, telling us all about how this family-owned business came to be. He was extremely hospitable, funny, and made us feel right at home. And the food was DELICIOUS!! We both got the chicken shwarma plate, which had a little taste of everything. Every food item was seasoned so well and you could tell it was all made with love and care. I will definitely be making this place a staple in my restaurant rotation! read more

I'm sad to say this but I've tried authentic Mediterranean food and this unfortunately wasn't good. The server was really nice and I wanted to tell her that I didn't like the food and to take it back but it's not in my nature to do it. To the owners you need to put more flavor on the chicken shawarma it was really bad and I could tell they microwaved it which was upsetting bc it wasn't busy. The pita tortilla fell flat and the Turkish coffee with dates tasted like old coffee. Lastly the beef shawarma the tortilla was stiff and it fell flat. You have a beautiful dining area but the food wasn't good. It hurt paying the 50.00 dollars to be honest. read more

Love this restaurant. Location is great and the food is even better. Family-owned and the staff is amazing. The owners make you feel so comfortable from the moment you walk in. Stephanie and Eli’s love story began at a wedding, where fate brought them together. Before they knew it, they had fallen in love. Eli proposed in the romantic city of Prague, and the couple sealed their vows on Valentine’s Day in Venice, Italy. Their celebration continued with a grand three-day wedding in the picturesque French region of Switzerland.
