This Giant Tiger is an Express Store, which means it's much smaller than regular Giant Tigers. It feels a bit small and dingy, and is essentially a discount convenience store. The regular Giant Tigers are discount stores, similar to the now defunct Bargain Harold's in Toronto, or Bi-Way (which shut down, but I heard they will re-open a slightly re-branded store on Orfus Rd in Toronto (it will be called "Bi-Way $10 Store")). So the quality of the clothing there is not great, and the toys are usually not brand names, but they have inexpensive grocery items. Giant Tiger is a Canadian company and it originated here in Ottawa (the very first location was in the Byward Market, and it's still there). I've only been in this location a few times. It's not my favourite, but is convenient for the local residents.

All of the designers are women and Canadian (many of which are local) which makes this store totally unique in Ottawa. Some cool labels include: Annie 50 and Soit Disant (both out of Montreal) and Dagg & Stacey whose latest collection feature tweeds in collegial cuts. There is also a funky line designed completely out of recycled sweaters! The store environment is inviting and chilled out with nice familial chatting amongst staff and customers. Something else worth noting is the community spirit that the shops on this street seem to have. They all seem to know each other and don't hesitate to recommend a visit to their neighbouring stores for something specific you might be looking for. OMG, why did I not know about these designers earlier? Their pieces are gorgeous! Most of the clothes in the shop are somewhat quirky with a bohemian vibe to them, some with slight steampunk elements, but there are pieces that look more mainstream too. They also have unique jewelry pieces, hair accessories, belts and purses. Prices run the gamut from less than $1 (vintage jewelry) to over $150 (new clothing). New clothing starts at about $35 for T-shirts and goes up to $100+ for dresses. The shop is small and is in an old converted residential unit in the Byward Market. The new clothing is "environmentally friendly" and it's often made out of recycled clothing material with some really great patterns. The clothing is usually made in Tibet (fair trade) or Canada, including some work by local designers. The clothes are usually quite nice and Bohemian-inspired, although the prices run a bit high sometimes. However, they often have a sales rack and trunk with some great pieces, including my favourite coat that probably gets more compliments than any other article of clothing I own. The quality is pretty good for the price that you pay. You can also get maple syrup, ice wine chocolate, plushies, and more. There's a clearance section at the back of the store. A male staffer was talking to his female counterpart about some person who came into the store and caused a disturbance. He made mention of filing a grievance with the police. He then left the store. i had found a t-shirt that I liked. I went to pay for it. The woman at the counter said that it was cash only. There was a payment machine on the counter. Interesting. I let her know that it was unfortunate that it was strictly cash. I put the article of clothing away and left this store. As a tourist, I don't carry a wad of cash on me. As a Canadian, I don't either. It's such a ridiculous restriction placed on tourists and shoppers who want convenience and don't want to handle cash post-pandemic. This store does not have an ATM to withdraw cash. Instead, you need to walk over to Rideau Street to find a bank, figure out how much money you need to withdraw, and head back to this store to make a purchase. Highly inconvenient. If you are dying to make a purchase here, I recommend arming yourself with cash before dropping by. Otherwise, don't come here thinking that you can use a debit or credit card to make a purchase.
