Fun divey gay bar! My only gripe is that it feels extremely local, almost to the point of being uninviting on certain nights where a drag show is happening and there is nowhere to sit. Everyone knows each other, and that's great, until you are being stared at by 10 people the second you walk in the door. They have Karaoke some night which is also fun, open to all and much more inviting than the crowded drag shows. Then again if you want your ear drums intact you might need to bring earplugs. Some of these performers belt into this broken speaker system as if their life depends on it. My ears were ringing quite a lot after exiting that night. I consider myself a local, a recent one but a local none the less. I don't want to rag on this place as it is the only gay bar for a couple miles, but it feels just OK to me. The decor is minimal, a bit dated, not much you can do. The space itself feels a bit cramped, and there is a door connecting the neighboring restaurant which causes occasional food smells to waft over. For a dive, what you see is what you get. Not about to drag all my friends away from Hell's Kitchen to come see where Mizz Cracker used to hang about, but if I'm in the mood for a Tuesday night Karaoke I will probably pop my head in the future to see if anyone good is up. There actually have been some amazing voices in there, almost Broadway level, so there is hope. read more

Suite = sweet My attempt of trying to be cute. I just started working in the area and was pleased to find out there is an LGBTQ bar on the UWS, an area not known for this community. The bar has a very old, cheesy 80's (but in a good way), dive ambience to it. Drinks are pretty reasonable for NYC, $6 bucks for well drinks. For being on the UWS, the bar has a very diverse crowd; maybe that is due to the presence of Columbia University. I've only been here a couple of times, but I had a good time on both occasions. It's the kind of place where one can be social with strangers or be social only with your cocktail. The clientele seems pretty unpretentious and relaxed. On both of my visits, the male latin bartender was great. Since the bar is adjacent to a roti take out place, order food from next door is pretty easy. A decent gay bar in the UWS. I've been going to suite for a couple years and love the atmosphere, bartenders, drag queens and the regulars. Drinks are also cheap and very good which is great because so many spots in the UWS are so ridiculously expensive... There are a list of negatives about suite though: get really crowded and loud on the weekend, some regulars and locals can be overtly hostile to new comers, people kinda stick to there groups a lot of time, and the mens bathroom stall doesn't have a door. Nonetheless it's a nice low key spot to hit in a pinch. read more

This was my go-to Neighborhood spot last year when I lived in the UWS. My girlfriend and I got along well with staff and other regulars. One of the best things about New York for us. Victoria Chase hosts the karaoke nights on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays and I wish I had it in me to go every time, because i appreciate her providing a space for folks like myself to be able to decompress with my social anxiety and participate without leaving my seat at the bar, and just stare at the screen in front of me versus getting up on stage. I don't typically like any bar scene - especially so with most gay bars - mainly because the balance of fun, flirt, comfort, and acceptance rarely happen. This is particularly the case in NYC. Blessedly, this is FAR from the case (from what I've experienced) at Suite (caveat: I was there on a quiet night. But the staff set the tone, and these staffers are awesome. So I'd be willing to go back during peak times). Affordable drinks, love the dichotomy of their "loungey left" and "bar right" set up, cut WEE stage, decent bathrooms, super affordable drinks (and well-mixed L.I.I.T.'s!), and right next door to Bombay Frankie, WIT a window to bring in food so you don't even have to step outside. Suite is a quaint, dimly-lit gay bar on the upper west side. It's usually more on the low-key side, except when they are airing new episodes of Ru Paul's Drag Race. Those days tend to get packed and rowdy! They have a cute little stage because they have the occasional drag show. The last one we stumbled upon was hilarious! When you walk in, they have an extensive bar on the right, and on the left are a few circular booths where you can get cozy in. They also have a small food menu where you can order in Indian food from the restaurant next door. The popcorn shrimp and fries are delicious! The prices here are outstanding. The beers can be as low as $4. I never understand when their happy hours are but it seems to be an every day thing. The cocktails are usually about $8 which is still very good for a Manhattan bar. Their cocktails are also pretty strong. Sip slowly. The bartenders are always attentive and friendly. Even when it gets busier we never have a problem ordering a drink. I've been dying to try their Suite Ale but they always seem to be out whenever we stop by. This has definitely become one of my favorite bars. read more

Went to Suite once and had a good time. My partner, on the other hand, was there numerous times before we even met. He always had a great time. The bartenders still remembered him! I enjoyed it. We had some nice drinks, good conversation, and even enjoyed the drag show. Will I ever go back? Likely not. It's full of Columbia students and I have a personal rule about drinking around them. This place isn't that bad, but it's not that great. But after reading some of the negative reviews, I wanted to add my two cents. Sure, this isn't a "destination" bar. This would not be the place to go and spend your entire Saturday night, if you wanted to go out and party. Then again, if one really wanted to be out partying on a Saturday night, they would not be on the Upper West Side/Morningside Heights area of Manhattan. This is a nice neighborhood bar. Given that it's close to my apartment, there are some nights I go here with friends when we don't feel like getting dolled up and going to chelsea, EV, WV, etc. But, it's something gay to do uptown. The crowd is mostly Columbia kids and locals. I find some of the drag shows slightly annoying and can go on for a bit too long, but I guess that comes with the territory. But for some people, that's the perk. But, what I do like is that it's a neighborhood bar, without the dingy feeling that sometimes neighborhood bars have. I think of this place more of a neighborhood gem, kinda like comfort food. It's not going to attract people from other parts of the city, but for the locals, it's a nice, fun place to hang out. read more

Well...I trekked Uptown to this place to see if I was missing anything. I wasn't. Let's see: 1) Waay too small and not enough seating. 2) WORST drag show EVER. I thought that "drag" meant that they were in woman's clothing and not that it meant a commentary on the quality of the show. Dull,verbose and the worst part...not very FUN. 3) The waitstaff was friendly...but it didn't detract from the general crappiness of the place. If you live up that way...go. First time visiting last Wednesday. A friend brought me here for drinks because this is his spot. I had 2 samosas and an order of some chicken dumplings that were recommended by the young bartender. A couple of hours later I had the worst stomach cramps in my life. The cramps came every 5 mins or so. Never had food poisoning before and this was a first. I couldn't move cause I thought any movement would aggravate the cramps. I sincerely doubt it was the drinks or the samosas. It was those dumplings. Dear Suite and the NYC LGBT community, My friends and I regularly visit your bar. In fact one of my friends loves it so much because it's so inclusive. It's a place where gays, straights and everyone in between would feel accepted and not judged. On Saturday night (September 3, 2016) however, that wasn't the case. It was drag night, which was always fun. I admire drag queens because of their freedom and not give a fuckery attitude. In fact one can say that it's an outlet for those who are oppressed and made fun of. This persona is freedom, it's expression, it's everything that allows "the others" (like us) to finally experience life as it is intended. I have a terrible memory with names, but the person performing that night as Tina turner, was definitely slaying. I was pretty much intoxicated and having a fun time, that is until "Tina" drags me on stage. I mean, I was definitely willing to get up cause girl, I'm always DTF. But what happens after was quite a shock. When I got up there, she asked me where I was from. Now this question has always been hard to answer when I'm sober (I was born in Indonesia, raised in California and now living in NYC), so I just blanked in my deeply intoxicated state. Then pretty much shit hits the fan. Someone (if not her) suggested Thailand just like Danielle the bartender (I'm sure danielle is NOT from Thailand), then Bangkok, then it quickly turned into an escalation of other racial Asian slurs that seemed to be completely acceptable since everyone was laughing and having a grand old time. NO one said anything. I was left there on my own. It felt belittling and completely hurtful not because I'm not used to these slurs , but because it's coming from a community that I'm a part of. A community I deeply love and am constantly fighting for. A community that has experienced discrimination, prejudice, oppression. I was made an "other" in this supposedly inclusive community. Race is not just black and white. If someone were to ask the queen who was performing where she came from ("Africa!" "Uganda!"), I'm sure that would be considered somewhat insensitive (as it should be). I'm not expecting much because hey, this is the type of place we still live in now and it's part of a larger social problem (and I'm sure has happened in other gay venues). This is the type of world that still sees me as an underaged feminine Asian bottom from the exotic land of Bangkok, Thailand (is that the only Asian country you prejudice fucks know other than China?). I would ask though that you guys should be a bit more sensitive to these issues. Recognize that disenfranchising other minorities (even the invisible "model" minorities) are not okay. There's making fun for the sake of "jest" and Then there's flat out being mean and oppressive. You guys know what it feels like to be put down. Suite. Oh, my favorite homophone of a homo bar. I have a considerable bias in Suite's favor since it's the only gay bar within walking distance of my dormpartment, and, much like flattery, propinquity will get you everywhere. Suite isn't breaking new ground, but it's also not really trying to. It's a friendly place and the ample seating makes it easy to talk to and meet other people of varying ages and genders. The drinks are okay--not terribly strong but not terribly expensive, either. There seem to be drag shows most nights of the week, and they thankfully manage to be both entertaining and brief. In my mind, I've kind of categorized Suite as a good weekday bar, but I recently attended on a Saturday night and had a grand old time. After a certain point, they turn the music up and get a sizeable dance party going. What is, in fact, rather novel is that you can order food from Roti Roll, the Indian fast food restaurant next door, and they will bring your food to the bar. Good stuff. I suppose there isn't any need to venture far and wee to Suite if you're not already uptown, but definitely stop by if you find yourself in the area. read more

This is one of very, very few bars or restaurants that I'll genuinely miss now that I no longer live in Morningside Heights. Suite is crowded, fun, very gay, very loud, and extremely affordable. The whiskey sours were solid. My friends and I were able to pile into one of their fabulous horseshoe booths and have it all to ourselves for the night. There was also a really exciting drag performance going on that involved mostly wo/men of color, which was inspiring in its own way (though one of the drag queens did a really problematic rendition of Rihanna that involved domestic abuse as its major punchline [no pun intended]...). It would be worth the trek if there was a good drag show going on, but otherwise there's nothing else around to hold my interest. read more

Saw an amazing drag queen here once with a friend. She back-flipped in high heels and this is not an especially spacious bar. Cute bartenders without being the beefcakes you might see at Boxers. For the most part a laid back fun local gay bar, tends to attract an older crowd but is near Columbia so you get a good variety. I want to go for more of their theme nights (karaoke, etc.) read more

The music was good. The crowd was fun. Didn't realize it was a "gay bar" until someone pointed it out to me. Very interesting reactions from the guys I was with. Fun people watching. We ended up sitting next to an awesome dude with dreadlocks and his friend. He proceeded to give the two guys I was with sh*t about how, as straight men, they were uncomfortable because they were very arrogent. How straight men thought that every gay guy wanted to sleep with them and how they were wrong about that. It was a fun dialogue. When we were leaving, this same guy gave the them tips on when to go to pick up on straight woman who go to a gay bar and become frustrated that no men are hitting on them. Interesting... Great atmosphere, fun bartenders, and one amazing drag queen diva! Karaoke (Thursday) nights is the best time to go. I'm not much of a karaoke singer (nerves combined with a weak voice), but the crowd is incredibly supportive and you don't have to bring 100 friends to get applause - even if you suck! The drinks are a bit overpriced, but the friendly atmosphere almost makes up for it. It's a great escape from the crazy gay midtown scene. read more

I guess visiting an old co-worker? It must have been a REAL good friend 'cause I don't think I've EVER seen him that far uptown. Anyway, he naturally mapped out the closest homosexual drinking establishment, which is what led him to the fine establishment we all know as Suite. That's not to say it's bad or anything. It's just fairly adequate. I remember coming here once when Caitlin K. lived around the block. It was just after it opened, and I pretty much had the run of the place. That was nice. Last night? I don't know where those people came from... it wasn't sexy Columbia students like Alex thought. Pretty fair ratio of girls to guys, and I'll be judgmental and say that this place is VERY lesbian friendly. Judgmental because I was judging them to lesbians because they were two girls dancing together. In lieu of anything else, this place was fine. Alex and I had a few beers and had a few laughs, but don't necessarily make it your destination. This place was AWESOME! Stumbled upon it thanks to Yelp with the girls last night and it was SOOOOOO worth it. First, the midnight Drag show was awesome. I couldn't have been more happy and excited. The Queens were JUST that: Fit, funny, and fabulous. Everyone was very chill and friendly, the drink specials weren't too bad (especially for NYC). I liked the environment and the people present forced me to do some self-reflecton. Especially regarding ascribing sexuality to people. Over all, a very good and low key spot to visit. It's worth checking out Thursday and Sunday for karaoke. Definitely need to be prepared for the atmosphere, but very welcoming establishment. If ever there were a gay Cheers, this is it! This neighborhood bar is as eclectic as they come. Tuesdays and Thursdays the queen, Ms. Jackline Dupree MCs karaoke nights and they are not to be missed! The crowd consists of boys from all over - uptown, downtown, queens, brooklyn - a small, but vocal straight crowd, younger-side lesbians and a fantastic mix of ethnicities and races. You cannot go wrong. Danielle is a fabulous waitress, Billy and Michael, the bartenders, can mix drinks with the best of them, and Ivan, the amazing owner, cares about his clientele. While the place isn't bad for a quiet drink, the parties usually start around 10pm. The place can get crowded very quickly and starts to spread thin after 2am. The best 4 hours of your life will happen in-between! If you start craving a bite to eat, the Roti Roll next door serves through a window at the bar. There's also a connecting door if you wanna take a breather for a bit. How can you top a bar that has good drinks, no-attitude, multi-cultural crowd and food next door? But I received completely rude service from the new bartender after the guys changed shifts. I remembered that Roti Roll (a Yelp recommendation) is nearby and decided to do take-out. Wait, what is behind that door? A BAR! It's called Suite? SWEET!!!! Attached to Roti Roll is the little bar/lounge with YES, a happy hour (until 8). I have a very bad taste in my mouth from Suite last night, and it isn't from the glory hope I'm sure is in the bathroom. After being charged $40 for four totally mediocre shots of well alcohol, the saddest Boy George impersonator crushed every last hope I had for the damn place. We were four of about 7 people in the bar (and that's a generous estimate) and he refused to play a song we requested. I mean, what? We are the only people in a gay bar, who is going to be annoyed by Lady Gaga playing by request? I (used to) love Suite. Now we're that weird couple that broke up and still have feelings for each other, but don't know what to do with them. Pros: I've been going consistently every two weeks for about 6 months, and the Friday and Sat drag shows are always a crowdpleaser. (I bring all my friends who haven't seen one, and they love it!) I usually order a few (cheap!) drinks and chat up with the bartenders. They make good cosmos and gin/tonics. The crowd is a bit varied - ranging from your boys next door to (non-DILF) dads, but I guess that's because this is the *ONLY* gay bar in the UWS. I'm not complaining, most guys are cute. However... Cons: I went back now that it's summer, and a lot has changed. It's almost like the change most NYC high school girls get between their junior and senior years: you notice they're different (it's probably the nose), but you can't quite put a finger on it... My go-to bartenders no longer work, and the owner now storms around with a chip on his shoulder. Obviously high on some power trip (or in a constant state of panic because he can't keep employees), he hired a twink-y boy from Columbia who demands you order 2+ drinks immediately upon walking in. I understand that times are tough, but at least let us ladies sit down first... especially when a show is going on! We didn't order anything, and the bartender bounced over to the owner to tell him. Subsequently, we were told to leave - all within 10 minutes of walking in! And during the queen's performance!! Who interrupts a Queen when she's singing?? I wanted to talk to the manager to understand. Within 5 minutes of our conversation, he interrupts to go turn on the next song of the performance (understandable), and then spend the entire song flicking the light switch on and off so there was some "stage effect" (not understandable). I ended up paying for my drink that I couldn't even finish and left with my friends who were kicked out. It's sad that this is the only bar Upper West Side gays can flock to, but I guess I'll just have to suck up with the subpar bartenders and new management until something better comes along. read more
