An exceptional stay--this was one of the most comfortable and pleasant Airbnb lodgings and by far the most sustainability focused stays I've had. The rooms were cute, very well-kept, and extremely comfortable--exactly as the pictures illustrated. Lisa took time to show us the premises, complete with all of her amazing projects. The rooms feature water recycling, solar-generated electricity, composting, and on-demand water heating system (very cool). Beautiful surrounding area with soul-warming views of the distant mountain range. Easy drive from downtown (yet far enough for a refreshing & secluded feel) and delicious restaurants--just ask Lisa for some recommendations. She was very helpful in offering suggestions to explore the culture, food, and geography of Santa Fe. Spartan review I had the opportunity to stay in a vintage 1940s travel trailer on my recent visit to Santa Fe. Also known as "the Spartan", has been lovingly restored to original era interior finishes, amenities and appliances. I was a little hesitant about the size initially, as am over six feet tall, but once settled in I easily navigated the kitchen, living room, bedroom and shower with ease. Really enjoyed the coziness of it. Aside from the interior the spartan is flanked with a front porch with views of the sangre de cristo mountains and a backyard with trees and shrubs creating a unique welcoming space. Worthy of a destination itself the spartan is sure to please with all it's charm and creature comforts. read more

I couldn't be happier with my stay at Suitable Digs. It's nestled away off Route 599 so it's the perfect distance from Santa Fe if you're interested in a little privacy/quiet. While making my way through Santa Fe from LA to Austin, I stayed here two nights and got some of the best sleep I've had in months. The house itself is gorgeous. It's spacious but all the hallways and rooms are tucked together so it feels very warm and homey. The owner was sweet and showed my boyfriend and myself around when we arrived later than scheduled one night. She had one or two things to keep in mind (Santa Fe's water conservation, etc.) that I appreciated. We stayed in the lowest-priced room and it was still amazing. I can't imagine how great the other rooms are. If you're looking for a little Santa Fe getaway, check this place out. You get quite the bang for your buck. read more

Awesome! This place is just 4 miles from the plaza but offers plenty of quiet and privacy that I didn't expect to find in a city. The setting was beautiful and had an authentic Santa Fe feel. The grounds are very unique with plenty of off-beat artwork and gardens. Also, this place provided a homey and comfortable feeling that you just can't get from a hotel. Lisa was a sweet lady and made us feel right at home. We liked that Suitable Digs was off the grid and self sustaining. We'd never experienced something like that before so it was unique in that we were able to get more of an understanding of environmentally conscious living. It's not so hard after all! read more

I came to Suitable Digs for the 20th time or so...this time, with a new and wonderful man in my life. We were still in the early stages of getting to know each other and basking in such beautiful and lively surroundings, I learned some new things about him (one can't help but express themselves openly while visiting Suitable Digs). The interest and the pleasure he took in retro, vintage style items was new to me--and only enhanced by our getting to stay in the unique classic, the Spartan. We were already excited by the incredible vegetable and fruit gardens growing in this desert Eden, alongside the various and fascinating water catchment, solar and other energy-conserving systems. So much to see and take in! But when we stepped into the Spartan for the first time, wow...he came alive in a new and different way than I had seen before. His eyes gleamed with wonder, like a little boy on the first eve of Chanukah. The trailer was adorned in time period style, authentic in its original form with all the little extras that Lisa had taken the time and painstaking effort to locate and attach, no distance too far or too wide, no fixture unaccounted for. My beau settled in on the couch to read, out loud, several pages of Red Sky at Morning, a 1968 novel by Richard Bradford that takes place in New Mexico. I listened to him laugh and reminisce all over again, as he had when he first read it years ago. That evening, we sat in chairs on the patio outside the Spartan, gazing at the bright moonlit sky and feeling dreamy about where we had landed together. I recall the moonlight as it shone into the Spartan and landed on soft pillows, just as the warm morning sunlight welcomed itself into our cozy abode to gently awaken us the next day. Being at Suitable Digs for the 21st time was just as familiar as ever...and at the same time, it was as unexpected and fresh as traveling to a completely unfamiliar and exotic destination for the first time. We stayed in the Sun Room for a few nights in early November. The room was very comfortable and homey and the location was great! We were out of the downtown area and at the end of a dirt road that let you feel that you were a bit "off the map". Lisa checked us in and made sure that we had everything that we needed. It made both of us feel a million miles away from Chicago the whole time. The longer you were in the room, the more little added touches that you found. I have already recommended Suitable Digs and the Sun Room to my family if they are ever lucky enough to get to Santa Fe. I sure hope that we can get back again soon. read more

Short version: Being greeted by an acre and a half of brilliant wildflowers was our first taste of Suitable Digs. The entire property was lush with vegetable, berry, and herb gardens, a geodesic dome with fig trees and rosemary bushes, a greenhouse with olive trees and wild grasses, a beautifully landscaped deep, cold, stone plunging pool and an entire property of trees, plants, and whimsical fun. We stayed in the beautifully restored 1948 Spartan travel trailer. The restoration project is documented on her website. It was appointed with all era-appropriate items and the front and back yards were private, intimate, and lush. The view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains was spectacular. The exterior and interior areas of the property were neat, clean, tidy and in excellent repair. The proprietor, Lisa Sarenduc, was Santa Fe-savvy with great information for travelers and very respectful of privacy. She has lovingly created an extraordinary green space in the harsh landscape and we are forever grateful that she so generously shares it with us. We will always return to Suitable Digs. Long version: Upon arriving at the entrance of Suitable Digs, we were greeted on the right by an acre and a half of brilliantly colored wildflowers which were a unique sight in the desert landscape. We would come to learn that this wildflower garden was Lisa's (the proprietor) current project and there would soon be the addition of 100 to 125 trees to be planted. We would return to this garden in the cool mornings to witness an army of hummingbirds, listen to the bees which covered the bee balm, and take some of our most beautiful pictures of the trip. Meeting Lisa was our next treat. She immediately gave us a tour of the property which represented 13 years of her adventures in creating this lush, serene, and lovely space. The opulent vegetable, herb, flower, and berry gardens were in full bloom. The geodesic dome was bursting with ripening fig trees and rosemary bushes. The greenhouse contained olive trees and a wild garden of grasses and flowers. The entire grounds contained the normal indigenous junipers and pinon pines that were probably there when she arrived. However, the fine gravel pathways were lined with additional trees and plants that Lisa lovingly planted to create a cool haven from the hot and harsh landscape. Chairs strategically placed around the property gave the impression that Lisa might take the occasional break to enjoy the view or appreciate her labors. Peppered throughout the setting were whimsical articles that brought a smile, just enough to be clever and fun but not kitschy. Lisa found a way to make use of artistic cast-offs and recycled material such as tumbled glass and hub caps to add interest, fun and beauty. Arriving at the Spartan was the next surprise. The fully restored 1948 travel trailer would be our nest for the next three days. The restoration project is fully documented on the Suitable Digs website as well as in a feature article in Atomic Ranch: Mid-Century Marvels. It's hard to describe the feeling of fun and joy to stay in the Spartan. In addition to the exquisite blonde wood interior, the attention to the era-appropriate details was remarkable. From the front deck entrance with the glider and milk box to the interior with 40s fabrics and fixtures, the appointments were made with careful thought to create a complete retro experience of time-travel. Of special note were the books, movies, refrigerator, Osterizer, step chair, dishes, sofa, radio, coffee table, iron, and many other items that any child of the 40s or 50s would recognize and love. The front deck was the perfect place to enjoy a cool morning, moving to the back Hobbit garden as the day warmed up. The cool, intimate setting of the Spartan was a flawless vacation setting or us. We enjoyed every second of our stay there. The next joyful wonder was the stone plunging pool. The cold refreshing water was the perfect beat-the-heat option. Beautifully landscaped with a view of the mountains, it was also intimate and serene. The woolly mammoth companion overlooking the pool was an example of whimsy that gave a smile. The nearby outdoor dining table with solar lanterns hanging above completes the picture of beauty and serenity that characterizes the property. All aspects of the exterior and interior space were neat, clean, tidy, and in excellent repair. Great care has been given to maintaining the many details of this outstanding property. Lisa has the greenest thumb and the biggest heart. She has lovingly built a green space (see suitabledigs.com) for her guests to enjoy. Staying at Suitable Digs, you get the feeling that you are participating in green living that respects and nurtures the earth. Lisa is a rare individual who seems to have humbly taken on the privilege of being a fine steward of the earth in her little part of the planet. Suitable Digs is amazing! If you are coming to Santa Fe, you should stay here! Lisa was a wonderful host and gave us the most amazing dinner recommendation, Vinaigrette, which we loved. When you stay at Suitable Digs you are staying at an eco-friendly retreat for less than the price of just an ordinary hotel room. There is a soaking pond with mountain views. Our apartment had everything we needed for a perfect stay. The beds were super comfy and the sheets were so soft. You can even book her multiple places for a wedding, retreat or conference. Several outdoor rooms are perfectly decorated and you get to enjoy them all. We have done quite a bit of traveling and this is one of our favorite places. read more

I came to Santa Fe to make art and found myself living in a work of art at Suitable Digs. Lisa Sarenduc, the proprietress and owner of this enchanted place, has created a lush comforting whimsical refuge in the desert sand; she extends hospitality with thoughtfulness and care. For instance, If you are planning a hike there are water bottles for your use, a soft insulated cooler to keep your sandwiches cool and an umbrella in the event of rain; for your morning coffee Lisa has provided an elegant French press. The flannel sheets, plush comforter and down pillows guarantee a perfect night's sleep and, if you ask Lisa, you will find that most of the furniture and cabinets have been custom-made for your lodging. My husband and I had a wood burning stove in our room that took off the chill from the high desert air. Pure unadulterated comfort on the inside. And on the outside there were gorgeous gardens on the cusp of growing figs and berries and there were fruit trees in full blossom and big tangled bushes of fragrant rosemary and in their growing season there will be flowers and vegetable and dozens of trees just newly planted. If you happen to be lucky enough to stay at Suitable Digs and don't feel like dining out at one of Santa Fe's many fabulous eating establishments, you can eat in and cook that locally sourced food you bought on Saturday at the Santa Fe's Farmers Market in a fully stocked kitchen complete with sharp knives, cork screws, pots and pans and wooden cutting boards. And you can eat it, weather permitting, under Lisa's pergola at her big outdoor table lit by a dozen globes of light under the stars. And, did i mention the swimming hole???? OK so many good reviews here's mine. Although the spaces in which to stay are unique & fun & well cares for I found the owner Lisa S to run hot & cold. She did not honor her word.(which I could prove via an email) She was abrasive in her attitude. She spoke about people staying at SD behind their backs. I found she candy coated everything. I came away feeling that all she cares about is the money she make from folks. I would NOT recommend this place to anyone read more

The name "Suitable Digs" reflects the down-to-earth humility of it's wonderful and very interesting owner, Lisa Sarenduc, as it is far more than "suitable"! If it were our choice to choose. it would be hands down "Heavenly Digs" - peaceful, relaxing yet stimulating and fun........ Lisa has a lovely design sense and always seems to be involved in creating or doing something quite interesting on her amazing property! There is much to take in here/learn if you are so inclined....Lisa knows all the things to provide her guests to make them feel at home. Needless to say, we did not want to leave at all. This beautiful place was beyond anything we ever expected. We stayed there last July for four days and it wasn't enough. The Sun Room was spacious and cool and comfortable. The details is the construction and design were instantly enchanting, but the real treasure was exploring the oasis that Lisa has created. I really love this place. It is a magical, quirky and delightful guest house, made extra special by the proprietor, Lisa, who has an eclectic, exuberant and up-to-date kind of decorating genius that has nothing to do with kiva ovens or adobe, combined with an earth-conscious (but not sanctimonious) philosophy. If you know what to expect and you're the right sort of person, there's no way you could dislike this joint. It's not downtown, but that puts you closer to the desert. You'll need a car and the ride down Chicoma Vista is pretty bumpy, but it's worth the ride. We stayed in the green room and it was super-comfortable and quiet. Lisa was very helpful with Santa Fe and surrounding area suggestions--Tent Rocks rocks!--for travel and food. Be aware that it's a guest house and not a bed and breakfast; there's a great natural market about a mile and a half down W. Alameda though, so you can go get a bag of freeze dried mangoes and some organic fair trade coffee and bring them back to this solar-powered paradise to feel total immersion in the highest pleasures of the liberal bubble. read more

What a gem! A tranquil Santa Fe oasis on 2.5 acres 12 minutes from the Plaza After our harrowing 9 hour drive to Santa Fe we arrived late in the wee hours of the night at Suitable Digs only to find the owner/proprietor, Lisa Sarenduc, awake to greet us with genuine warmth. We were looking for a quiet retreat way from the downtown Santa Fe plaza scene but only a few minutes away from town. And we found it in the private casitas of Suitable Digs among the sweet gardens and meandering walkways that would suddenly open into hidden seating areas of magentas, reds, oranges and turquoise golds; each successive oasis uniquely designed amid the pinions. And the Spartan....oh my!! What we did not expect to find and what will bring us back was the zero chemical and fragrance cleaning products and soaps, the ecologically minded design and use of the property, the architecture, the zero pesticide and herbicide acreage, and the proprietor's way of naturally warming your heart without invading your privacy. Recently spent a week+ in the super-cute and comfortable "sun room". It's a funky little apartment that is packed with amenities and little special touches that make it special. In addition to everything else, Lisa, the owner, provides a superb annotated restaurant list that guided us to places for wonderful meals in town. The location on the outskirts of town made us feel like we were living in Santa Fe, and not just visiting, but the location was also just minutes from everything, and therefore really convenient. My husband and I have stayed at Suitable Digs several times over the past few years and we are never disappointed. The environment and accommodations are excellent.
