Pulling up I thought it looked super cool. That all changed when I got to my room and found a dead cockroach on the floor. Fruit flies in the kitchen and moldy bread In coolers. Worst of all was that there was raw meat sitting opened in the fridge. It was a sickly greenish grey color. Id say the price was a plus, but you're getting exactly what you pay for. I stayed there from October 25 thru October 28. Basic accommodations at a reasonable price per night. 7 day stay limit. Large shared kitchen. Home style hostel. The # 2 bus stop is 2 blocks away , costs $ 1.00 ( Oct. 2024) , makes stops near the Rail Runner ( commuter train) , the Railyard and downtown Santa Fe. Very funky back to 60s hostel furnished with old salvation army type furniture. I have stayed there 2 times about one year apart and have met interesting and life enhancing people on both stays. The first time, 3 film crewmembers, robot creator and guitar player, a woman who flew in from San Antonio to attend S.F. Opera week, and a single mom over the EPA in Maryland with her 2 kids visiting were there. Free food and shelved supplements from whole Foods. Last visit, 2 young youth from New Jersey area who restored positive outlook for me. The food was a bit "Ripe," but still free. Less comraderie from this group so not as much visiting between guests in the common areas. Good and easier jobs are snatched up early for cleaning and, of course, you are also responsible for your room. We are the maid service. At $35 a night ($25 prior) 2 days+ must- that is still a deal- $10 returnable key deposit. Shared shower and toilet area. Probably the only youth hostel that has this low of rates in the USA! May your stay be more like my first time - the guests really make a difference! One of the film crew fixed an Italian dinner dish for all of us and a guitarist supplied some tunes! read more

FYI 1: You can only stay here if you are from out of town. NM residents are not allowed. They require you to show out-of-state ID upon check-in. FYI 2: There's a $10 key deposit upon check-in (cash only). This place is pretty great. ROOM OPTIONS: According to their website, you can only make a reservation via snail mail. However, you can book via Airbnb which is what we did. Find "Santa Fe International Hostel" and you can see all their listings there. There's the shared dorm option at the lowest price. Then, there are private rooms. There's a private studio with a full bath and a kitchenette (that's what we got), a private room with a full bath, and a private room with a half bath (community showers near the office). The prices vary based on your room choices as well as season, it seems. We paid $45/night for the full bath and kitchenette option and that was the most expensive unit at the time. A week later, it jumped to $60/night. No matter which room you choose, you still need to make/break down your bed (they give you sheets and towels upon check-in) and clean upon check-out. STUDIO: We stayed in the studio so I'll elaborate on that. It was quite nice for the price. Spacious and included a kitchenette (stocked with cups, plates, utensils). FYI, you can't eat in the other rooms but our room had a kitchenette, microwave, and fridge so eating was allowed. Pretty clean and pleasant. No problem with the bathroom - water pressure was good. KITCHEN: Everyone has kitchen access but the lower priced rooms (definitely the shared dorms but not sure about the other private rooms) have to do a daily chore to use the kitchen. We had access w/o chores since we paid more for our room. Anyway, this was the best part. Whole Foods donates food (expiring or slightly expired). There's a large fridge as well as bins with fruit and vegetables. The fridge was generously stocked with eggs, cheese, meats, salad, guacamole, ready-to-go meals, etc. They even had vegan items available. There were bread products, pastries, pasta, cereal, condiments, herbs/spices, coffee/tea, and much more. I seriously ate better here than I do at home (I can't afford to shop at Whole Foods, haha). The kitchen also had pots and pans and basically anything you needed to cook a full meal. Obviously, you are expected to do the dishes and clean up after yourself. CHECK-IN: Simple. According to Airbnb, "volunteer staff is available 7AM - 11PM and resides on property." This is great if you are getting in a bit later. The staff member explained everything to us, gave us a tour, and walked us to our room. PARKING: There's a parking lot (not big but not tiny either). We stayed here in March (Friday - Monday) and never had an issue finding parking. WIFI: $2 per day if you wish to purchase it (regardless of which room you're staying in). read more

So cute, nice staff, good price. I was traveling with a friend and we spent $45 for a room of our own (sleeps 4) and a private bathroom. The hostel is partnered with a nearby Whole Foods so the kitchen was stocked full of wonderful ingredients for cooking (literally anything you would need to cook with) and there was a beautiful courtyard to eat meals in. The hostel had a nice community feel. The only downside was that our shower smelled like pee. read more

You have to work for your room here. Not really. You do have to do chores if you stay more than one night. If you stay one night you have to sweep and mop your own room. Basically they want it looking the way it was before you got there. No big deal. They also have free food. They get donations from some of the local grocery stores. Most of it is day old or a few days old so be careful. I didn't end up partaking in this part. A comfy place to sleep. $25 plus a $10 deposit which you will get back, will get you your own private room with a shared bathroom. read more

The hostel functions as a non-profit / nerve center for creative hi-jinks. The accommodations are dated, but rich in nostalgia. They offer dorm or private lodging, but in each case there is a $10 key deposit. I believe they are a cash only business. They do ask that all guests perform a simple housekeeping task (clean part of the kitchen, take out the trash, sweep+mop the lounge, etc) - as such, there is a task signup sheet. Every Sunday the owner picks up expired/throw-away food from the local Whole Foods and provides it free to hostel staff and visitors. There is a large refrigerator and freezer setup for guest to utilize along with storage lockers in the kitchen. Coffee and other small baked goods are provided in the lounge. Wifi is available for $2 per day. Located on a busy street are a variety of stores/food options within walking distance and the downtown plaza area is only about 2 miles away. I have stayed here three times traveling to Santa Fe since 2012 and have always really enjoyed it. I love the eclectic feel and friendliness of others here. It's pretty cheap and the chore is no hassle. I used to live in a coop so I never had an issue earning my keep to stay on the cheap. It takes like two minutes anyways and is no sweat. The only recommendation I would give to the owner is that the mattresses should have bed bug covers from what I've learned of living in high volume places. Anyway, I would love to come back in the future for a fourth visit and on. I hope this hostel sticks around to last in the future. Thanks for hosting us! It was worth it third time around. The first two times I was single and with groups of friends so we stayed in the shared rooms and that was fun but this last time I stayed here with my husband in a private room. If you are a couple or family I definitely recommend the private rooms. It's only a little more and well worth the privacy. read more

It was a great experience. Really nice guest and staff. Whole food donates food and they have a huge industrial kitchen that is open to all guest. I ate like a queen and never paid a cent. They have great outside chill spots to hang out. The dorms are clean and comfortable. My only complaint is that the room was so hot I had to sleep in my car the last night. They do provide fans but it wasn't cuting it for me. However, no one else seemed that bothered by the heat. It's located close enough to downtown but maybe not walking distance. read more

Fun &a memorable !! I stayed two nights in November. Cheap beds, friendly/family vibe,good location. The rooms were clean and it was quiet while I stayed, with only one other guest in the female dorm room. The dorm rooms have bathrooms with toilets only, but the two showers are not far- located inside the main hostel building and a short walk. All the facilities are cleaner than most hostels I've stayed in because the guests are asked to chose one participatory chore to contribute to cleanliness during their stay. There is a huge kitchen with and abundance of free food and snacks donated by Whole Foods. Would stay again! Loved Santa Fe! read more

There may be no better kitchen in a hostel here in the States. It's huge, allowing many people to be working all at once. Pots, pans, knives and dishes beg one to pull them down and test out their cullinary skills. Worse, the hostel stocks four (or more) refridgerators full of food that is free to use. Anyone who likes to cook will immediately find my rating be just. Don't worry... it gets worse. Stateside hostels are known for being the most pricey crashes to be found in the world. They're usually lower quality as well. This is one of the handfull of hostels in the U.S. that break this pattern. It's $15/night for a dorm bed. There's a key deposit (a few dollars) that you get back when you turn back in your room key. The only extra money you may spend would be the $2 that gets you Internet access... for the entire day. The owner has been in the business for a while, and with multiple hostels. He's an interesting guy, with plenty of eccentricities to keep him edging alongside the line between genius and insanity. A few of the workers seem to come from the North-East, as they can be direct, blunt and impatient. Anyone who doesn't need a whipping has nothing to worry about. Each person gets a single chore to do in the morning, just as with many European hostels. If you wake up early, then you get to take your pick of the chores. Finally, the hostel is right on Cerrillos--the main street for Santa Fe. That means downtown is a bus (or walk) away. read more

Upon entrance I was informed that there was a $10 key deposit (which would have been great to know in advance when dealing with a cash only facility - to make sure you had enough on you). In addition, at 11p or so and after a long day of hiking, etc I was dead tired and planning an early start the next day. It was awesome at that time to be informed that I would have to do a chore between 7a & 11a the next day. I informed them of my plans to just shower, sleep and leave super early so they "allowed" me to do my chore that night. It was late, for only 1 night and I was too tired to find somewhere else. Needless to say, I chose something quick and easy as possible. Some random employee actually stood there and watched me do the chore the entire time. As I did my chore, I got to watch them spring this little piece of information about the chore requirement on others and see their reactions. It was pretty amusing - not for the desk staff but for me. The next am, as I'm leaving I'm 3rd degreed by a 3rd employee as to my chore. He wouldn't even check me out or give me my key deposit though I had already given him the key! That is until he checked and verified that I was the one who had done my chore the night before. WTF? You made me pay you and do a chore to stay in your questionable facility with uncomfortable beds and then give me crap at a** crack in the am to give me back my KEY deposit? And if I hadn't done my chore? What? Were they going to keep my "key deposit" or refuse to let me leave? (Yes, the vibe was that creepy.) Just say NO! read more

I really looked forward to staying here on my XC drive. I like to check out hostels and was also super poor so the price was right. The night I arrived was totally 1-2 stars. The second half was 3-4 stars. We originally planned to stay in town for 2 nights, but decided to hit the road after the first night, we later would've liked to have stayed, but we already had set ourselves on leaving. Night: The guy at the desk was really hard to deal with and seemed a bit like a sociopath of some sort. He treats you like you are unwelcome in-laws staying in his bed while he is on the couch. He kind of looks like a Canadian Mark Wahlberg. The room was cold and technically has a bathroom, but you can't access it. The heat didn't turn on so we tried to switch to another room. Luckily we were able to, but it was a bit of a hassle. We were here in November and arrived late in the evening - it was very cold at night. I adjusted my car, which was loaded with all our belongings from moving across country. Apparently it was a handicap spot, which ticked the sociopath guy off, although I apologized emphatically. We were also given a stern warning about how the cleaning routine works. Day: I woke up early so I could get a good pick of the chores and also took my girlfriend's chore for her (wife now, perhaps because I'm good like this?! - haha). I think I swept up crumbs from the toaster and wiped down a table. Although poor, I'd rather have paid a few bucks extra to avoid this and being treated like a roommate instead of a valued guest. I chatted with another one of the workers, a cool artist guy who used to live in NYC. He gave a good cafe recommendation (Aztec Cafe) He was a cool guy and the other workers were too. If they checked me in I would've had a totally different experience. The guests staying there were cool and very eclectic. Students in town to volunteer to rehab one of the local parks, a mother visiting her son, other nice folks. The kitchen is huge! And whole foods donates slightly old food so there is a smorgasbord of free options to be had. The volunteers were leaving town and hooked us up with tons of top shelf meat and salmon and stuff that they had left over. Summary: Totally a Jekyll and Hyde experience. The lack of free wifi and seeming nickel-and-diming of folks might help account for the low cost, but I've seen cheaper hostels that are run better too.. The location is not great either, but not terrible if you have a car - I prefer walkable though. The street is an old school route 66-esque strip (hence this throwback hotel-cum-hostel). I don't know if I'd go back, but I would still kinda recommend or stay if I had to. read more

Great stay, the staff we encountered was kind and accommodating. Room was sufficient and clean. Our only issue was communicating via Airbnb with Preston, who was a pretentious a**hole and made us feel like we weren't welcome. We booked not knowing that they only accept out-of-state IDs only, as it was nowhere to be seen on the initial listing. Luckily we were still able to stay as we were traveling from out of town, but Preston made us feel dumb and terrible for this insignificant oversight on both ends. Alright. Santa Fe is a cool town, but it's expensive. This hostel offers a good, clean place to sleep that isn't far from center town, and the prices are the best you'll find. You have to do a light chore (cleaning bathroom, vacuuming, sweeping, etc.), you have to pay $1 for Internet, and you have to make sure to look over the food you're eating. Those are the "downsides." Truth is, the chores are easy, the food is plentiful, the Internet is quick, and the people are good. There were three people behind the desk while we were there. College kid who we had a long conversation with about religion, An angry gnome who was almost comically unfriendly, and a totally awesome & helpful (Susan?) woman who was full of warmth and info. My grandpa was turning 90, we had very little to spend, and needed a cheap place to stay for a couple days. This was much cheaper than any hotels in the area, and we didn't have much choice. The place has its charms, but overall...ehhhhh. It was kind of gross. We got a private room for something like $45 a night for two people. Our room had a double bed AND two bunk beds. The room was clean enough. There's a kitchen full of food you can use for free. There's a common area with board games, a piano and guitar, and it was kind of fun to hang out and chat with the employees and other travellers. The hostel volunteers I met were pleasant enough people. The downsides: The furniture and carpeting in our room was dilapidated, the shower dripped constantly so the bathroom floor was always wet. The knob on our door locked, but the lock itself was gone and a plastic grocery bag was stuffed in its place. Whoever had the room before us left a big wad of hair in the shower drain. You have to pay $2 a day to use the Wi-fi, which was slow as molasses. I've been in bands and gone on tour, so I've stayed in worse places, but I'll say that I've never paid money to stay in a worse place. Would I stay there again? Yeah. I'm broke and love my grandpa. But I wouldn't recommend it if you can afford someplace nicer. read more

I had a great week here. The atmosphere is friendly, and it's easy to socialize with the other guests. A few of us even formed a pick-up band with the musical instruments lying around. Downtown Santa Fe is a 30-minute walk, which isn't too bad in pleasant weather (i.e., all the time). There is a generous food supply, so you'll be well-fed. The accommodations are clean as far as hostels go, and the mandatory chores are reasonable, considering that they help keep costs down. Preston, the chairman, won't win any awards for congeniality, but there are enough nice people around that he shouldn't put too much of a damper on your stay. read more

Look, the bottom line with the hostel is that you're going to get what you pay for. I've stayed here numerous times because all I wanted was a place to sleep and cook some food. Is it fancy? no. Are they going to invest any money into renovations of any kind? doubtful. Plan accordingly. The dorms are $10/night with a chore, which can be as simple as sweeping the front stoop or taking out the trash. The beds are not always very comfy, but if you bring a sleeping bag it can make a world of difference. The private rooms are better and equally affordable if you have 3 or 4 people splitting it. They have a huge kitchen, very convenient if you want to cook your own meals. The folks running around there can be pretty interesting. It's quiet at night, people generally leave you alone. Let me start by saying that I have stayed in hostels on 4 continents and in 15 countries, I love hostels and the community they foster, but this place was awful. The staff seemed friendly at first and the rooms were as expected, though the bathrooms are too far away and there were not enough outlets in the rooms. I was in town for a work conference and was informed upon check-in that I was expected to perform "light chores," please see the attached photos of what they consider "light." Due to scheduling conflicts I was not able to perform my "light chores" in the mornings as they prefer. I attempted to compromise by offering to do the ridiculous chores in the evening, or to double up on the days I had a more flexible schedule. Rather than work with me even slightly, two desk attendants got aggressive and accused me of being irresponsible and raising their voices until I left. I returned after my conference and promptly cleaned out my room and checked out. I met three other individuals at my conference that had the same experience and were forced to find a new hotel at the last minute for the same reason. If I could give this place less then one star I totally would. At first this place seemed legit and being on a crew who travels through the area we had already planned on making this place our normal stop. The girl at the front desk who was working was very sweet and polite the entire time we were there. But only about an hour after we had gotten into our room the owner came up to us and started throwing a fit because some other guy had tried to come in with his emotional support dog. How that guy and myself, came to be connected as customers I have no idea. But he told us we needed to leave so we packed our bags and on our way out we handed in the keys and he told me in a very rude smart ass tone told me I was now in Tresspass of his property and needed leave. So I left and waiting for one other guy to return with our third room key, and he refused to pay me more then $20 of the $85 I payed for the night until everyone else had arrived but wouldn't let me back on the property to collect it myself. Customer service in this place is as bad as it gets - 0 The rooms too -0 I do not, nor will I ever recommend this place to anyone. Feel free to take your chance but I'm sorry for them, they lost a good constant customer their first day because they kicked me out for someone else who wasn't even with me. My boyfriend and I were coming into Santa Fe and looking for somewhere that was cheap, outside of the most touristy area. We opted for this hostel rather than one of the motels on the same street because it was slightly cheaper than the others (we paid 30 dollars for a private room here). Had we not stayed at an awesome hostel just the night before in Flagstaff, AZ I might not have had such high standards for what a hostel in the US could be like. But we did, so sorry Santa Fe hostel, you just didn't really cut it. First of all, the man working the front desk in the afternoon was not very hospitable (I'm putting it nicely here) from the very beginning. He didn't let us take a look at the place before committing to staying there (citing "security reasons"), and didn't really seem like he wanted to answer any questions at all until we paid. When we did, he was happy to leave his post and show us around and give us a rundown of the place. You have to do chores here. There are a limited amount of chores you can do, so if you get up past 9 am or so you'll get last pick. My boyfriend cleaned one of the bathrooms as our chore (wasn't that bad) and I had to clean our room before we left. You have to put your own sheets on when you get there, then take them off and vacuum the place before you leave. There is no air conditioning, and we had a fan that barely even blew a breeze. It was hot. When you leave, they will come with you to check that you did everything correctly, and they're not very nice about that either. Basically, everyone who works there could use a serious lesson in manners. I imagine that if you stayed here for more than a day like we did you'd get used to it, and the bathrooms are actually pretty clean and the kitchen is nice. They get food donations from the local Whole Foods after they expire, so you have to pick through what's still good. It's a good place to cook if you're trying to budget. I really wouldn't have been so down on this place if they had been nicer. read more

It was fun staying at this hostel with my family or 3. The host was friendly and a traveler as well who decided to stay on for a few months. Very warm atmosphere. My wife and I were tired of the normal motel fare and decided to stay at a hostel during our visit to Santa Fe. John, a street performer/artist, who makes balloon animals in the old Santa Fe square, recommended this hostel to us. First off, you have to have out of state id, you must agree to do chores the next morning, you may not drink, smoke or do drugs while in the rooms. There is a $10 deposit per room key issued which they return to you in cash the next day. Oh yeah, it's cash or traveler's cheeks only so go to the ATM first. You have a choice between communal lodging, private room with shared bathroom, or private room with private bathroom. The prices are cheaper than a motel because they don't have to pay for house keepers because the guests (us) do the chores in the morning. I think I chose to sweep the hallways. Everything in the kitchen that isn't marked with someones name, is up for grabs. They get a lot of their food from the local whole foods as a donation because they are not for profit hostel. There is a piano in the lobby as well as computers that you can use. The rooms have hard shiny floors which you must sweep in the morning, and the beds are old metal frames with comfy mattresses. Old flower power curtains were a nice homey touch. It's a pity there weren't more travelers on our visit here to mingle with, but definitely worth a stay if you're low on dough and want to add some spice to your travel itinerary. read more

They scam free food, from the local food bank. Charge $2 a day for wi-fi;and to stay at the hostel during the day. They get an extra star for the price. I paid $25, for a small private room. Morning chores are required. You must also clean your own room. The staff are unpaid, and it shows. The parking lot looks like, a flashback out of Sanford & Son. Loaded with old cars and junk. Met some cool people here. If traveling solo on a budget, it's a good deal. Otherwise, you can do better on Hotwire. Sadly, this is the only budget option here, besides camping. This hostel is so welcoming and comfortable! The staff was very nice and accommodating. What really stood out about this hostel was the large well-equipped kitchen filled with a big variety of food and ingredients! They get donations from Whole Foods and other grocery stores in the area, so you have a large selection of good quality food to cook with or take on the go. Guests are asked to do a chore every day which I think is a great idea because it alleviates some of the burden off the hostel staff so they can continue to keep it running so well. All the guests pitching in with chores also contributes to the communal environment in which everyone is working together, which is awesome. read more

I've stayed at many hostels and have to say this is one of the best I've stayed at.... you feel comfortable like your at home and oh did I mention the abundance of food in the fridge... So generous! Will be back next time I'm in town for sure! read more

Sante Fe Hostel is very different. I read all the blogs and comments about the place and heard from other Hostels about Preston. But this place is one of my greatest Hostel experiences. It was a great honor to meet Preston. He is a Genius in his own right. His place is amazing; greatest location, free food, a car collection I envy. Chores so what, I spent 15 minutes doing my chores and I felt like I wasn't doing enough. If you want to be waited on; hand and foot , stay in an expensive hotel or stay with your mommie. I ate enough food her to pay for my room. Eating out it Sante Fe is expensive. By doing a couple of minor Chores , you can have a gourmet Dinner or Lunch for next to nothing. Wake up and Smell the Roses. Life is what you make it! Carpe Diem! " Sieze the Pleasures of the Moment Without Concern for the Future" For most of those who are into the enviroment: Most of those Mercedes vehicles run on Vegetable Oil, if you smell french fries, it is one of Preston's Mercedes running on recycled cooking oil. I absolutely loved this place, and I don't say that much about places. Firstly, it had a great sense of community. People offered to help you before you even asked for it. People smiled a lot here. It was a great meeting place for travelers. You meet an eclectic group of people who are really interested in connecting. People here like to exercise, particularly outdoors, to cook, and make art. There were yoga trainers, meditation students, and people on journeys of self-discovery. You can give and get travel ideas in the area from these people and even find travel partners if you like. The food was free! It was also very healthy and tasty. So that was another way to connect with people eating the same foods. The kitchen was the main communal area, and as someone who likes to cook, that was amazing. The courtyard is extremely comfortable. The overall area also had similar traits. This is a great place for all travelers, but particularly for young ones who are on a budget. I will probably be coming back, even though I live in Maryland. read more

Good hostel, lots of free food, though a lot of it going bad, so be careful. Rooms were basically good, a little pricey for a hostel ($30 for two people in a private room) and they make you do chores, but Santa Fe is pricey so it is what it is. Get up early to get the quick-and-easy chores before everybody else does. read more

Don't stay here. Way over priced for what it has to offer. The rooms were dirty and there were urine stains on the toilet bowl. The sinks were not in any better shape either. There was no A/C .The showers were covered in soap scum . Kitchen smelled and looked disgusting. We were very disappointed so we spoke to the owner and the manager and he was very defensive and rude. When I told him about the urine stains on the toilet he said :bullshit! and then offered another room, which was not much better, and wanted to charge us 10 more dollars for it. read more

Really cool old building. Very nice patio area where you can watch the sunset. Kind of far from the city center. The only thing that turned me off was they had roaches in the kitchen. read more
