Sugarfish has these preparers now in a kitchen, unseen but still are doing what they do best. Yet, the plates these artisans are giving you are sensational and best of all, not breaking your bank. Went to Sugarfish on a Friday night. The wait was quoted at an hour, but we were seated after about 45 minutes, which was a nice surprise. Sugarfish is located in a nice plaza, so it was easy to walk around and kill time, and there was plenty of parking. My boyfriend and I both got the Nozawa Trust Me, and everything came out at a reasonable pace. The fish was extremely fresh and everything tasted delicious. It was definitely filling enough for the both of us, and we would definitely get this again next time. The biggest downside was that our server wasn't very attentive, and dishes started piling up at our table. We also had to ask multiple times for water refills. read more

Surprisingly my first time at Sugarfish, despite many years of eyeing their different locations. Sugarfish is know for their quality cuts of nigiri and for being uber fresh. This location doesn't take reservations and is typically pretty busy so be prepared. We waited under 10 minutes for a table for a late lunch so we were feeling pretty lucky. This restaurant is a well oiled machine as the crowds keep coming and the fresh plates of fish doesn't stop cranking out from the sushi chefs. I will say that the staff were kind and that the service was fast and efficient. They don't skip a beat. My friends and I opted for the Nozawa Trust Me special (each) which included: -Edamame -Tuna Sashimi -Salmon -Scallop -Albacore -Blue Crab Hand Roll -Toro Hand Roll -Hirame -Yellowtail -Sea Bream The three of us agreed that all of the fish was super fresh, delicate, buttery, and delicious. Also the prices are insanely reasonable for the amount of food that you get. For under $50 a person we were absolutely stuffed. I'm also going to dream of that fresh scallop nigiri as that was absolutely my favorite. It was a good meal for sure and a very fun experience. The main reason I'm docking a star is that I had much higher expectations for this place. While the nigiri was fresh and the experience was fun, I do feel like I have had better sushi in the area without having to wait in like supporting a small mom and pop sushi restaurant. This spot was definitely good but not the best I've had/didn't 100% live up to the hype. Would I go back? Yes definitely. My friend and I stopped by because he was craving sushi, and I mean good sushi. We arrived late, about an hour before closing and waited 20 minutes to be seated. The place was popping. The crowd was young, hip and dressed well. My friend has been here and other eateries in the small chain many times. He knew the menu by heart. The host was very accommodating in finding us a booth setting to the corner. I've been to Japan and always love seeing the authentic food combinations and flavors in a place like this with a solid chef in charge. We ordered the Trust me Medium because I wasn't very hungry. The first plate was edamame- fresh delicious and we soaked them in soy sauce which was so tasty and combo. Then the plates started coming out so fast we were still eating one and the second was right there- warm rice got cold. One server in particular seemed like she was having a bad day or something. She literally threw the plate on the table, worse than one would expect in a diner. The plate hadn't stopped spinning and she already had her back to us and was flying away. People two tables o we said she did the same thing to them. This is premium sushi and sashimi and any person dining here expects the ambiance and service to be part of the experience. This particular server glared at us from across the room and we summoned the manager who apologized. He promised she would not be serving us further. The manager was really chill and very kind and articulate. We finished before closing but the whole experience was pretty much ruined. I have never seen flippant, slamming and service with attitude like this in my life, even at places that charge 1/5 the prices. Will not be going back to this space. LOVE THIS PLACE. Just really good basic sushi with warm rice. Not sure why more places don't do warm rice. Only downside is that they don't do reservations so there is basically always a wait. The trust me is enough food but the Nozawa trust me is worth it if you want a little more. Absolutely love the food and the ambiance. The tuna sashimi is so good that I crave it on a regular basis. I think Sugarfish has ruined me for other sushi restaurants, because nothing else will fix the craving! The only downside is their reservations (specifically, the lack of them). My husband and I can't make a reservation since it's walk-in only. We don't get to visit as much as we'd like because we don't want to wait too long for a table. They don't take reservations, but the wait is usually manageable (30 mins-an hour), and this time the wait was only 30 minutes even though the place was packed. I also like that even when the restaurant is full, it's not super loud. The servers are very fast and the food was delicious. We always get the Nozawa Trust Me and it always hits. Came around 5:30ish on a Tuesday, and surprisingly it was poppin'! It was about a 20-30 minute wait for 2 and everyone has to be present to be seated. They don't text or call so you have to stick around the area to wait for your name to be called so that's kinda inconvenient. Ordered the Nozawa Trust me for about $46 and it was fillingggg. Paired it with the Super Dry Nozawa for $14 and it was perfect between two. I'm usually not a fan of sake but I appreciated how smooth this was! We arrived around 5pm on a Tuesday and were seated at a candlelit table for 2 within 30 minutes (Of note, the entire party must be present before being seated). It's a tad crowded at dinner time, but lunch hours are usually less so. I usually order the Nozawa Trust Me, because it's the perfect balance for the price and quantity ($46 at dinner hours). I usually leave feeling satisfied but not super full. We paired with the Nozawa Super Dry Sake (shared between 2 people). This is the SUGARFISH location where I fell in love with sake nigiri back in 2023. Prior to that, I would only eat cooked rolls. Eating raw anything used to blow my mind. I'll never forget that day, two years ago, when I tried a piece of my partner's salmon nigiri. I was in heaven! The way it melted in my mouth was divine. I remembered thinking, that looks too pretty to eat. And next thing I knew, it was in my mouth. I ordered a few more orders, and came back the very next day for more! Don't try asking for a side of ponzu sauce though. They cannot give any extra out. The ponzu sauce is strictly for the dishes that include it. And when we went to a New York location, I was cut off from ordering more salmon nigiris. I guess there's a limit and I reached it that night lol. Albacore and yellow tail is always a good choice. And you can't go wrong with toro! There's a no tipping policy. They say it's factored into the prices which I feel like are very reasonable. I'm sad locations are only in LA and NY. Sugarfish has been on my list for awhile; glad we finally got to try it! There are several locations throughout the LA area. I first heard of them through those cool IG photos of their to-go arrangements. Parking: The plaza gets busy and the parking lot fills up, but it's a big lot, so parking isn't too difficult. We were able to park within 5 minutes. It's a cool plaza that I recommend checking out as well. Customer Service: Customer service was decent. They are quite busy, so it's understandable that they cannot be attentive to every customer. The employees were nice. The only thing that can be better is the pacing of when dishes came out. At first, we were receiving dishes really fast; new items were coming out before I was finished with my current plate. However, we then received no new dishes for a while. At one point, my partner received a plate with a bunch of items on it, while I did not receive my next dish until he was done. It kind of threw off my eating pace. Wait: It was a somewhat busy Saturday afternoon. We were told the wait would be 30 mins, but were seated in about 15 minutes. Atmosphere: It's a cozy, modern space inside. The tables are very close together, but not uncomfortably close like some other places I've been to. Calabasas is a nice area, so everything is up to standard. It's clean; I enjoyed the sliding bathroom doors haha, but make sure you lock it properly! Pricing: I thought pricing was very reasonable. The omakase-style sets: Trust Me Lite ($22), Trust Me ($30), The Nozawa Trust Me ($39), and Don't Think. Just Eat ($59). These are the lunch prices; the dinner price is a few dollars higher, but you also get more/some different items. You can also order a la carte, with items ranging from $3-$15 (most under $10). Food: The offering is pretty good for the price. Of course, don't expect top-notch sushi and authentic omakase (if so, salmon would not be on that list, and no condiments...maybe even no chopsticks at some places). We got the Trust Me and The Nozawa Trust Me. The Trust Me: Edamame, Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi, Albacore Sushi (2pc), Salmon Sushi (2pc), Toro Hand Roll, Japanese Yellowtall (1pc), Hirame Sushi *they actually didn't have this-scallop was the substitution*, Blue and Dungeness Crab Hand Roll. The Nozawa has everything as the Trust Me, but includes Chutoro Sushi (2pc) and New Zealand Sea Bream Sushi (1pc). It was just enough food for us. I felt full, but not too full. At first, I was thinking of getting the Don't Think. Just Eat; I'm glad I didn't, that would have been too much. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The rice was warm and sweet. It's quite soft, so may fall apart on you at first touch. I was bummed that we didn't get to try the Hirame, so I will need to come back for that. I kind of want to order to-go next time, but I don't know if that will be as good/fresh as dining in. We will definitely be back though! read more
