Saw this place finally closed, thought I left this review years ago but I didn't. I bought jeans from them and said I might buy a black pair eventually. The owner kept sending me messages on instagram inquiring if I am going to buy the black denim. I stopped responding and he eventually called my place of work at the time and said I tried to steal something but put it back. I gave this business money and he tried to get me fired from my job. I love Philadelphia and am proud to be from here. But I have never encountered anyone as rude as the salesperson at this store in my life. While the store was supposed to be open for business, the door was locked and I had to wait outside for the salesperson to even acknowledge me, much less to open the door. He finally came to the door fully masked and cracked the door open leaving only enough room to toss a mask at me before he would even consider letting me in. Needless to say, I walked away. The issue wasn't the mask, the issue was his rudeness. How is this place even in business? Don't waste your time - so many other great stores in the area -even right across the street. As locals - hyperlocal, in this case - I'm admittedly grading Sugarcube on a curve. I love having a shop nearby that offers a nice selection of men's and women's clothing, spanning styles and price points that resonate with both my wife and I. It's a massive store with a lot of merchandise, so you're likely to find something you like if you're in the mood to shop. Even when we haven't wanted to shop, we've found things when just popping in to say hi. You can dress up, or dress down. Shop affordably, or splurge a bit. They've introduced us to brands that we didn't know, and are always refreshing their assortment. As an independent business, they're obviously not getting in a ton of sizes, so as with all boutiques, if you see a piece that you like, you're wise to jump on it at that moment...even if you may pay a premium. A lot of the negative reviews here seems to fall into the buckets of price, assortment, or staff attitude, which may have validity in those instances, but for myself, I've only had great experiences. From the first time I went in when visiting Philly a few years ago to now as a neighborhood resident. The consistent, positive experiences we've had is why we continue to go back and spend the few extra dollars on a piece to support their local business. Plus, the men's assortment usually has things that work with my own style preference (casual, understated, but seeking quality materials and a more tailored fit in the $40-120 range). The women's assortment tends to run a bit higher, but that could just the difference in what my wife and I have shopped there. The staff are always eager to talk to us about their new arrivals, but they haven't been too pushy, thankfully. Regardless, Sugarcube likely has something for just about everyone, and if your experience mirrors ours instead of some of the more negative reviews here, hopefully you'll enjoy shopping there and find that piece you've been searching for! I stopped in while strolling in Old City the other day. When I asked the owner/salesperson, out of friendly curiosity, how long the store had been there, he asked me if I lived in Philly then launched into a rant about how unthinkable it was that I didn't know it was there. Then I overheard him explaining to another customer about how cell phones and uber are why world is going to hell. I don't know why there aren't more five-star reviews given my experiences at Sugarcube. This shop has quickly become one of our faves in Philly! I love the diverse selection of clothes for both men and women... and for casual or more dressy attire. It's like they have something for everyone and every occasion (less the more formal ones though). Another bonus is the varying price points... also something for everyone from the the more budget conscious or for a splurge, you can definitely find great stuff here. I have discovered a few brands that were unknown to be here, too. The owners are super nice and always very engaging. It's been an awesome experience every single time, so much so it will keep us coming back. And now that we live closer, I have to admit I'm a little worried about my pocketbook now. Now that everyone got to see me rocking my brand new hat during the Hollywood Party at Valanni, I figured that it was time to give credit to the store that made it all possible. First I should say that for the longest of times I wasn't exactly a fan of hats. They're the natural enemy of spiky hair which I have sported for several years prior. But ever since Jeni from Plume gave me a new lease in appreciating letting my hair grow out, I figured it was due time to rock out a new hat. And at Sugarcube I found a black Layne Coal fedora that I simply had to have (as well as several other AMAZING hats there were about two to four times as much). But Sugarcube doesn't just stop at offering elaborate hats, and if you checked them out when they were on display at Yelp Homegrown you might have gathered that by now. between the swank boots, styling shirts & pants, and eclectic jewelry; you'll find yourself suppressing the urge to walk out with a whole new wardrobe on the spot. Especially since Edward and Eliza are masters of creating such enticing displays! The price can be up there for a lot of the items 9along with the quality of what they are), but if you do some digging you can also come across plenty of amazing finds that don't break the bank. And either way it all goes towards a local boutique that puts serious thought into the products they sell, and how they display them. Another thing that credit needs to be given to is the customer service. Even though my friend and I walked in during the tail end of a First Friday without realizing that they were gearing up to close in a few, Edward was unbelievably accommodating and friendly . He and Eliza took the time to engage every customer despite there being an in store art opening with plenty to take care of. When I found the hat the I fell in love with and needed to have, I found it on a week that I didn't get paid ad was therefore feeling sad about parting and leaving it for good. But Edward was extra helpful and put it on hold with one of my business cards until I was able to pick it up the following week. For that reason, and several others Sugarcube is a spot that I can't help but recommend. read more

The store has a big selection and i was excited to find a local store that had a men's n women's collection. The salesperson seemed nice and helpful but not great at customer service when there was an issue. I talked my friend into buying an $80 tshirt and it didn't make it through one wash on gentle cycle with other tshirts n no dryer. The store wouldn't return or exchange the shirt and said it was his fault for washing it. Its a cotton shirt, and the tag said wash on cool. What was done wrong?! If you want to buy expensive clothes that fall apart after one wash, this is the place to go. I bought other items for myself and stopped in a few other times for gifts too! I'm worried those clothes will fall apart too!! I will not be shopping here again! Terrible customer service!! read more

A mix of old meets new, Sugarcube is a dream for fashionistas and frugal shoppers alike, male or female. Every item is hand selected by the dedicated staff, and the owners are passionate about their customers just as they are about their business. Anyone searching for a unique piece that no one else will have should consider this store. In the fall, I coveted an 80s-inspired silky black and white blouse with billowy sleeves and slender, buttoned wrists; the back was cut in a sexy but flattering v-shape. Much to my chagrin, the piece was one of the new items and therefore, out of my price range. I'm still a little tormented by the memory of feeling like a stone cold fox in that top. As I sit here typing, overseeing the gallery I intern at, I'm tempted to quietly step outside, lock the door, and go around the corner to Sugarcube. This is a fantastic boutique - probably the best in Olde City, at least of all the ones I've been to and I've been to alot - me + shopping = a bad, bad habit I should try to quit. But it feels so GOOOOOOOOD! The store itself is very large and I love the overall feel of the interior: funky, upscale rustic, there is wood EVERYWHERE which lends a homey feel to the place. Even better, they offer both men's and women's fashions, although the women's section is larger for obvious reasons. Their selection is very clearly hand picked of the best of the best. Its hard NOT to find something I want, which makes it impossible to leave this store empty handed. Their dresses in particular are fantastic, and lately they've had more leather boots than any other store I've been to. The prices, though, are what prevents me from stocking my closet full of their goodies since they aren't as recessionista friendly as Lost + Found across the street. But then again, these designs are unique and fun and beautiful and you are sure to make a statement when you wear them. Maybe I can close the gallery a little early today... read more

Hellooooooooooooooooo new awesome coat! You will be mine, oh yes, you will. So yesterday, my girl Carrie E and I were doing the boutique crawl with a no-prisoners kinda dedication and Sugarcube, well, once I walked in, I knew Sugarcube wouldn't dare get me out the door without sending me home with some solid purchases :) The first was this awesomely weird and oh so cool pair of earrings featuring a drawing of a bird with a caption bubble that said, "Word." Genius. Now this would have made me a totally happy and satisfied camper, but then what was that off in the distance? Is that? Could it be? The newest member of my coat family just waiting to be scooped up and taken home to SF to be loved and adored and fondled and fuc...well you get the point. Enjoyed to the fullest, shall we say. The answer, yes!! And when I looked at the sizes, I saw that they actually had mine!! Yay. And so I stripped down to my tank top (I swear, that's the problem with shopping in a cold weather city, you have to remove far too many layers, so if you are going to try something on, it better damn well be worth it.) Lucky for me, this coat was, only, was it actually a little too big? That never happens with coats and I since, well, since I am pretty much smuggling a pair of obese kittens under my shirt, but anyhoo. This one was a bit too lose and added the look of an additional 15 lbs, can't have that and then I spotted a smaller size and put it on and I tell ya, it was like Cinderella and the shoe, PERFECT!! Then I looked at the price tag and did a little *gulp,* but immediately kicked the rationalization train into high gear and determined that, this is a coat, a solid, nicely designed and TIMELESS coat. (Psst, ladies, if you ever wanna sell yourself on something you know you shouldn't be spending that much money on, just throw out the word timeless and you can't argue with that ;) I then got a second opinion from my girl Carrie, along with a thumbs up on a really cute little purple baret and we headed to the register to pay for the goods only to hear that my bank had put a "suspected fraud" hold on my card. No, no, no Wells Fargo, I just have a seriously problem, but thanks for the head's up. At that point we decided to take the financial hint and call it quits for the shopping day. But I am soooo glad that we stopped in here and so thankful for my new adorable coat. So far it helped me escape the torrential Philly downpours last night and today, unscathed. If you're lucky enough to shop at Sugarcube when owners, Eliza or Edward happen to be in, you're in luck. You can't help but be attracted to their energy. Theirs is the kind of friendly face you need on those less than extraordinary days. I'm so used to going into boutiques where the sales staff makes you feel like you're back in middle school, sitting by yourself at the lunch table and feeling generally ugly. Sugarcube isn't that kind of boutique... and thank god for that because their clothes are right on par with my taste. I'm the kind of woman (am I already a woman?) who wishes men's clothing was made for us ladies. Is that wrong? Either way, Sugarcube caters to this sentiment and hosts a wide array of androgynous (for lack of a better word) clothing. Sugarcube is a store full of beautiful items. And when I say full, I mean full, unlike a lot of the boutiques on third street. They do not mess around. They utilize their space to its maximum potential, stocking it with goodness for both sexes. The store aesthetic is spot on, with wood and trees, and gorgeous fixtures that don't just give clothes and accessories a place to hang, but elevate them into art. The clothing selection is stellar, though a bit on the pricey side, and ranges in style and comfort level. For example you could purchase the most comfortable t-shirt, or a really ornate and special dress. Men's fashions are not simply there to appease, they are abundant. Service is amazing, and not pushy, just well done and thought out. The jewelry and accessories are also quite lovely, and on a different day I will be back to peruse them with a more watchful eye. I was a on a mission and a meter during my last visit and so purchased only clothing- a lovely dress and adorable cat print blouse. This is the sort of place you go to add "pieces" to your wardrobe. It would also be a great place to purchase a gift, say for someone who has a birthday approaching. Ahem. read more

This fiercely fashionable little boutique is the reason I have recently started a vintage purse collection. In addition to a beautiful assortment of colorful, modern, creative "dream closet" apparel, their collection of vintage handbags is out of this world. And if you're on a budget, they run a little cheaper than the other items in the store. The woman who works there is so lovely and friendly. For all my New Yorkers out there, this is the sort of boutique you'd expect to find on Smith Street in Brooklyn. Heavy on the wood, heavy on the trendy-vintage-kitschy, heavy on the wallet. My aforementioned fashionable friend considers this to be the only other acceptable place to shop in Philly (aside from Matthew Izzy), and I appreciate its point of view, even if the clothes don't speak to me personally. The selection is well chosen - a notable collection of APC, Mike & Chris and some great vintage leather coats. I also flipped for an amazing scarf made of llama wool, but was forced to put it down (and rightfully so - it was $150). The owner is friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful. My friend bought an adorable APC sweater. Not a bad end to a two-day jaunt to the city of Brotherly Love. read more

I'm not the biggest fan of shopping, but my wife needed a winter hat and this place had the best selection on the street. I got the sense that this was a high fashion store for hipsters and they had some great clothes to choose from, but the price tag was always high. Yes! I like to shop here for pretty dresses. The best place ever for cool clothing and jewelry. My husband loves his shirts he got here. We go in and owners so helpful and funny, too. Previous review is true and I just got shouted at by the angry male shop attendant when I tried to return a piece. He treated me exactly the way another reviewer wrote "[to] say the gentleman owner lacks social skills and professionalism does not even touch the rudeness that I experienced in this store. Do not shop here unless you like to be talked down to, disrespected..." The female attendant was friendly, but the man was just so rude and I actually felt threatened by him. I need a lot of time to be able to go through all the clothing they have at this store. Huuuge selection! What I like is that they offer brands that I most often find when I travel to LA. This makes me happy as I really like this style of clothing. They are not necessarily very pricey but you'll find a few pieces costing few hundreds of $$$ (like the ones from Religion). My friend and I visited Sugarcube this past weekend and found the store to be delightful. I purchased several items of clothing, ranging from a lightweight beach cover-up skirt to a silk dress perfect for a nicer evening out. I found the staff to be incredibly helpful and accommodating, which I like when I am shopping and trying on lots of clothes. I don't agree with any of the negative reviews below. I am both happy and sad that I have to walk by this store every day. The window display is always enticing. Sometimes I am drawn in by what I see. And I always see something I like. They have a great selection of...everything you want to wear. Dresses, shoes, coats, hats, scarves, jewelry. There is such a good selection of items to choose from. I especially appreciate the fact that they stock many items made of natural fabrics, unlike some of the other clothing boutiques in Old City. Who wants to pay $200+ for a dress that's made out of polyester or rayon? Not me. The items can be a bit pricey here, so you probably don't want to make shopping here a habit, but it's definitely a place you should visit every once in a while to treat yo self. read more

I was visiting from NYC and I have to say, I wish there were more shops like this in Brooklyn/Manhattan! I don't think stores like this are a dime a dozen in NYC...namely because the store is massive. Great stuff...discovered some new labels too. Some tencel dresses from LA caught my eye, along with a bunch of great hats. Service was friendly, all women working there when I shopped. Update: Recently visited again and I'm taking a star off for being told how to properly and more delicately look at clothing along their "non-slide" racks by a man working there. I was a little put off by that. The racks were pretty packed with stuff, so it was a little hard to look at the clothes "like I was looking through a book," as he suggested. Maybe it shouldn't have annoyed me so much, but it did. I noticed little signs posted near certain racks after that...sheesh. read more

So my buddy was looking for some vintage stuff and while I hadn't been in this place I knew that 3rd street Old City was the place to go. After browsing a couple of other stores in the area, we almost passed this one up. It's funny that despite there being a male (and female) mannequin in the window, we thought it was mostly women's clothes (this is true of many places) and to our surprise, Sugarcube has a strong balance of each. They even had a couple of brands that I had only seen online before. I twisted my buddy's arm to go in because I spotted the hats. I figured that it couldn't be that bad and it certainly wasn't. I saw a few things that I liked and even a couple that made me gasp. I think this is what boutique shopping is about (...and I'm not a boutique shopper). In a way, this is what Philly is about. I appreciate these sorts of small businesses. It feels good to expand my horizons a bit so the next time I'm looking for "x" item I have one more place to go and better yet... one more place to recommend. read more

This store should be called Lemon Wedge, as Sugarcube does not adequately describe the bitter taste left in your mouth after dealing with the pretentious, snarky male shop owner. This is quite a shame because the female owner seems to be quite a doll. However, this condescending, arrogant a-hole makes shopping there quite uncomfortable. From the second you walk through the door you feel like you are not worthy to be in his presence, let alone his anally displayed over priced garments. Forget about casually browsing through the racks of clothing. The moment you attempt to simply shift a hanger, you get chastised for not understanding the complex "non-skid" clothing racks. He even attempted to model the proper way to browse to me. This is not a one time occurrence, on several occasions he's made snide comments, not only to me, but to other shoppers in the store. With all of his rules, attitude towards paying customers, and unwelcoming demeanour it is absolutely not worth walking through the front door, especially with so many other awesome boutiques along 3rd st. Save yourself from the harassment, and the feeling of inadequacy you get from shopping here. read more

Let me start by saying, I have been inside this store a few times. It's mostly a window shopping experience for me because I believe that most of the items that they sell are overpriced, but I enjoy going in to look on occasion when I am in the area. I went in a few weeks ago carrying a bag from a purchase from another store. They have a sign displayed inside that asks you to check your bags. The hipster wannabe store clerk asked if it would be ok to take my bag. I told him that honestly I find it incredibly annoying when I go into stores and they ask me to check my shopping bag. I just feel like you are saying that you don't trust me, but I let him take it anyway cause I didn't want to cause a scene and that's their policy. He seemed upset with my comment. A few minutes later, said hipster wannabe goes over to female store clerk and whispers in her ear about something.......then they look over at me. I was BEYOND annoyed at this. Really? Can you at least pretend that you are not talking about me? Or wait until I leave the store. Just found it to be incredibly rude! Really, I would suggest going over to Third Street Habit or Vagabond. Those places never give me any problems. I'd rather spend my money at those establishments. read more

Sugarcube's new location is great and it looks hip and the kind of store i would like to shop in, but the clothes are very overpriced. I love all of the wood and the handpicked vintage items, but you cannot find much in this store for under $100. I would feel a lot better about spending money on a dress that was expensive if I could find a few vintage pieces for cheap. A great selection of cowboy boots and shoes and definitely a good place to go if you just came across some serious cash, otherwise the prices will hurt your wallet. read more

I completely agree with a previous Yelp post that this boutique, while still unique to Philly, would be a dime a dozen in Williamsburg or Greenpoint BK... a hipster's dream boutique there was a range of designers, vintage and eclectic wares. The menswear was essentially one-note though, APC, Pendleton, and Dunderdon. Women's wear I thought was slightly wider ranging, brands included Shay, French Connection, and some off brands I didn't recognize. Overall, buying seemed to be trend-following versus trend-setting. Now the true review for this place rests on the owner's personality, or lack thereof. When I inquired about particular sweater's material, he told me quite condescendingly that the materials were always noted on the tag in the bottom of garment. Thanks a$$hole, appreciate the lessen in how to buy clothes. I did find a cute cardigan I wanted to buy though after that off-comment I almost preferred not to give him a sale, but I'm not one to hold a grudge when a cute sweater is involved. Trying to engage him in banter or friendly conversation was truly a difficult exercise and not worth the trouble. I wouldn't need to go back there, but figuring similar stores are rarer in Philly, go for it if you live there. read more

One of my favorite boutiques in Old City. I don't always buy things from here since it's a bit pricey but I like to browse the unique items they have here. They carry a wide range of designers as well as some vintage items. The only downfall is that I recently bought a dress that looked fantastic in the window. I tried it on at the store and felt that it was a bit see-through. I asked the sales clerk and he INSISTED that it wasn't. Well, I got home and tried to wear it out.....totally see through. Guess I'll only be wearing the dress as a swimsuit coverup! The owner is always really honest with her opinions, but I guess not some of her staff members! read more

Certainly one of the pricier old city boutiques, and I have to say I was immediately turned off when they "checked" aka confiscated my shopping bag as I entered. It immediately made me feel awkward and none of the other places we shopped did this. Not a fan at all. The selection is huge, but so huge that it is rather difficult to search through the items because much of their inventory is packed tightly and it's tough to move things around and really look through the clothes. They must have just gotten in their fall inventory, because other than some adorable shorts in the front of the store, the whole place was filled with dark dark dark clothing. I'd definitely come back to take another peek since the clothes are cute and great quality, but the inflated price coupled with the bag check (did I mention you can't bring in your coffee either? More understandable to me than the bag situation, but just a heads up!) makes me think ill probably head to the other chic boutiques in the neighborhood first! read more

I live in the neighborhood and I like to support local businesses so of course I checked the store and have shopped there...once! The store has a decent selection of items and I like that they have some very interesting clothes from up-and-coming designers you've never heard of (I work in fashion). But let me tell you, the costumer service is appalling. You have to check your bag, your coffee, your kidney, your child and your pet before you can even enter the store. I get it, people steal things, spill things...but there are better ways to handle this. They have life-threatening signs about theft and how have the right to call the police etc. etc. in the fitting rooms. They had a sign with pictures attached to a broom (I kid you not) outside the store during the snowstorm showing how to brush your shoes before you could enter the store. They look annoyed if you don't fold things perfectly back to how it was, if you're just browsing and don't buy anything and god forbid if you have to return an item. I refuse to go there again. There are far better stores and a lot more friendly in the neighborhood like Lost & Found, for example. I doubt very much they have regular costumers, who would want to put up with this kind of treatment on a regular basis? read more

I LOVE Sugarcube. This store is a great boutique. It's filled mostly with an array of small but quality name clothing, and great vintage clothing and accessories. These items make the store great enough, however, they carry a TON of a A.P.C. and are one of the only stores I've come across that sells this fantastic brand outside of one of its own stores. I don't think Sugarcube can or will be topped in this city. Love Love Love. read more
