First time taking my 6yr old to a dentist. It's nice that it's a dedicated kids dentist and that they have things to entertain. The dentist was gentle and helped ease him while he was in the chair. I had very bad experience with this facility. I felt that they value their profit over the safety of their customer. Yesterday, I got a call to go over the procedure from the office for today appointment which was booked 2 days ago. I mentioned that I was in the hospital because my father is getting chemotherapy and I said I will call back. Instead of allowing me to call back, the customer service said that let he finish it first and then he can let me go. I was like "are you serious? I am in the hospital right now" in my head, but I was politely listened to him. When he was finally done with the procedure instructions, I was finally get to hang up. Later on the day, the dentist called and go over the procedure again. She did mention that the schedule potentially could be changed due to the safety caused by the Mountain fire. After we hang up, I called my wife and wife wanted to move the appointment to another date. I called the office back to see if we could move to another date. The customer service told me that I can't cancel the appointment because it would violate their "24hr cancelation policy". I told him that I am not canceling, but just want to reschedule due to the pollution from the Mountain fires. He is still not canceling the appointment due to their "24hr cancelation policy" Honestly, the Mountain Fires air pollution is really bad and we keep our daughter at home 24/7 for her respiratory safety. Based on these 2 incidents, I have concluded that sugarbug doesn't prioritize their customer well being and safety first but they prioritize their profit first. When I asked what they loved about their experience they all said the following: the staff, the vibes, and the knowledge of the dental team. When we took my son to his first visit, I understood instantly what my friends were talking about. The front desk crew was exceptionally kind and welcoming (my toddler loves attention so this was great). The atmosphere of the building, while at times hectic, just felt fun like everyone loved working there. When it was time to leave, they made sure we were set with our next visit and were prepared to answer any and every question we had. Cannot express how grateful I am to the staff and to the dentist at Sugarbug for the wonderful experience we had yesterday with my daughter. We had previously been taking her to another pediatric dentistry in Ventura, but she was always very anxious and nervous when going because of a bad experience she had her first time around, and never let them do anything to her without crying and going into full panic mode. They based her dental care off of assumption rather than professionally, since she never let them take x-rays or do a complete examination. Not to mention, they never were able to do a full cleaning nor apply fluoride to her teeth, but they always billed out that service to my insurance for whatever reason? When it came down to talking about a treatment plan, that other dentistry ended up sending me to their financial advisor who failed to inform me that my dental insurance was not within network. All she kept saying was there was a share of cost, and she kept pushing for my daughter to get IV sedation With one of their dentists that requires the patient to be under for a minimum of 2 1/2 hours and also required for the child to get a shot prior to the oral surgery so that they can forget anything ever happened, and I was told that the child needs to be in comfortable clothing like pajamas, and a diaper needed to be put on her in caseshe wet herself. Mind you my daughter is five, and all of this seemed extreme and scary. I was forced to leave a $750 deposit to secure her appointment and I was told that they do not accept payment plans that I would have to pay upfront what the estimate is on the day of her procedure, which was estimated to be approximately $1700 out-of-pocket and that is after the $750 deposit, could be faced with a larger charge, depending on what was found during the procedure. I knew we needed to get a second opinion and that's when my husband and myself decided to take her to Sugarbug, not only was I informed right from the beginning that they accept our dental insurance, but they explained everything in full detail about what she needed, which is half of what the other dentistry was saying that she needed and they also said that they do not push for IV sedation because that is the worst case scenario for them. They assured me that they can get everything done in one hour or less and could use the laughing gas or give her a liquid sedation to drink that is similar to Benadryl. When I tell you that I felt like 50 pounds was lifted off my shoulders, that's an understatement. I felt so much relief that my daughter would not have to be put under a dramatic experience just to get one tooth fixed. I recommend every parent always go with her gut feeling and get a second opinion when something doesn't seem right, and you are being withheld information regarding dental coverage, and if you are within network, or you have a share of cost meaning that they are not within network. Also pay attention to your children and their reaction when they see the dentist, kids know before we know as adults when something isn't right, and I'm glad that I paid attention to how my daughter reacted and knew that I needed to seek care elsewhere. They let you wear pajamas and bring a stuffy and a blanket and put on a movie for you and have flavored "laughing gas"...hence the "Wanting another cavity". Con's: Very busy-almost too busy at times Seating area is often crowded. For the most part, you cannot sit with your child during a procedure as space and furniture and traffic flow does not allow it. Small parking lot shared with other restaurants so it is often hard to find parking. Bad Personal Experience #1 My 17 YO niece had not been to the dentist in quite some time. We started at one dentist and did not like their assessment or treatment or facility so we went to Sugar Bug because my other children go there. I scheduled her appt and they agreed she had multiple cavities, approximately 7. She needed some fillings, and other work. They said they couldn't do the procedures and kept flip flopping and my niece already has severe anxiety at the dentist. They would make and cancel appointments and we would show and then they would only do part of the procedure. It was a mess. Bad Personal Experience #2 My husband is a RN and Sugar Bug would not see my family when they reopened after COVID due to fear of exposure. If they were clean. hygienic, and following proper procedure, that isn't something they should have to worry about. I found Sugarbug Dental when a friend referred me here. This was about 3 years ago and the first visits were 5 star, but I have noticed in the last 1.5 years that the customer service has gone down hill. It appears they have expanded so much that they don't even have time to address their clients discomfort in an appropriate time frame. This week I found that my daughter had a chipped tooth, with an exposed root, and they found it appropriate to have my daughter wait over 6 months to have it corrected because this was their soonest appointment. My daughter was comfortable here and this is what is so important to me. So for the last 1-1.5 years I have dealt with the minimal effort customer service, arriving for a confirmed appointment to be told it was cancelled by the office and they would not see us, to no return phone calls, promises from the management team (Patricia, Lizette and Teresa) with no follow through. I have requested on multiple occasions that my contact information or my email address be forwarded to the owner of the business so I could communicate my concerns, but I have never heard back. My daughter cracked a tooth this week and they saw us the following day. The hygienist told me, "that's not cracked, it's chipped". I explained that I was sorry but I didn't know the difference. For a moment I felt bad, but then the dentist confirmed that the tooth had an exposed root and that we needed to schedule an appointment to have it fixed. Their earliest appointment was for July 2020, OVER 6 MONTHS FROM NOW. When the scheduler asked a manager about it, she came to make excuses for the long wait and I explained that it seemed cruel to allow a young child to wait for 6 months with an exposed root and I asked if there were other options and was given a list of excuses. As we were leaving Sugarbug Dental my 6 year old said "mommy, they are nice to me but they are rude to you". I have since found a dentist to see and examine her and have surgery scheduled for 1 month from now, possibly sooner if there is an opening. Again, my daughters comfort is the most important aspect, but it's pretty sad that she can also feel the mood present at Sugarbug Dental. Loved our experience here! Scheduling was very fast, there are quite a few locations. They got us in the same day when my daughter was in pain. The waiting room had books and each room was very clean with movies playing on the ceiling. The dentist worked with us when my daughter refused the laughing gas. We scheduled her for oral sedation because she is very strong-willed and had no problems! They even finished both sides of her mouth in the same visit with no soreness after. I've been bringing my kids to Sugarbug for years so this overdue. The staff is always so kind and gentle in their approach since they know my kids can get very nervous (2yr and 6yr old). Use to like this place when my son first starting coming here. They got him comfortable with seeing the dentist and cleaning. We waited over an hour to been seen. They definietely don't respect their patients time. Was told to come in earlier and still here 1.5 hours later just for an X-ray. I provided a panel Xray from another provider and it "wasn't bright enough" even though other doctors were ok with it. They are more of a mill than anything, just getting the numbers. Camarillo location is hands down the best. All of the employees from the moment you walk in gives you a calming effect. My 6yr old needed some cavities done and he walked in a little nervous and as soon as they addressed him he was calm cool and collected. The dental assistant was nothing but kind. When my daughters mouth hurt bad and swollen they wouldn't initial schedule a apt to see if her tooth was infected for antibiotics... really had to push for an apt.... They lack empathy with kids that have anxiety and told my daughter to stop crying to not scare the other kids. Extremely long continuous loops to get IV sedation for treatment that never ended up going through and they resulted in referring her to UCLA.... Didn't want to travel that long and they lied and said theres no where else in the county to take her.... I have had a great experience with Sugar Bug dental until my son had to get his wisdom teeth removed. They would not refer me to an oral surgeon that is covered by my insurance unless it was Western Dental who wanted an additional $2700, for a covered surgery. I am shocked that they would refer over to a dirty, deceiving office than to a oral surgeon that could help within my insurance plan. I don't know if cash is not flowing correctly between hands, but a referral on a paper to get a kids wisdom teeth out within my insurance plan unless does not seem like an out of hand request. Now at one point they were thinking off offering oral surgery, but I was not willing to pay out of pocket for that either. Why don't you want us to use our insurance???? Sugarbug you have always been great, but this money grab really disappoints. Did Western Dental buy your morals out??? I am in shock. I couldn't be more happier with my choice in choosing Sugarbug Dental and Orthodontics to take care of my children's oral hygiene needs. Even though the drive from Sherman Oaks to Oxnard City is long, I still couldn't be happier with my choice. The offices are clean and organized. The doctors and staff are amazing and always greet us with a smile. My two teenagers have always been afraid of visiting the dentist. However, when we started our dental journey at Sugarbug they seemed to get more comfortable with the idea and even agreed to getting braces. Both recently graduated about a year ago from ortho and I don't think words can suffice with how happy my husband and I are with the results and care our children received! I believe we have been visiting the Oxnard location for over seven years now and have also visited one of the newer offices in Camarillo. Both the dental and orthodontics offices and staff are incredible, informative, attentive and professional. At this point I wouldn't trust any other dental group to take care of my family. Don't waste your time. I decided to go to this place because it seemed kid friendly. Well turns out they are not very kid friendly and o my care about the money. They had did this more than 2 times. Literally told me I could not leave the exam room until I paid. My phone had died and my husband was outside because we weren't both allowed to go in which is understandable because of Covid but they literally said, "you can't leave here until you pay by the link we texted you." This place is a waste of money and didn't even wan to treat my son and how can I access the link if my phone was dead and they treated us as if we were criminals by forcefully keeping us in the exam room. She made her very comfortable and introduced every thing they would use on her in a slow paced , gentle way so she would not get startled . We LOVE our Pediatric Dentist at Sugar Bug. The only reason we go to this office is to see Dr. Patricia specifically. She's incredible. It's unfortunate we can no longer visit this office due to their discriminatory policies. I called the office today to confirm our upcoming appoint and ask for accommodations regarding their mask policy for children. Our children cannot be masked. I made it very clear we were happy to wait outside until the Dr. could see us, they stated I was asking for "special treatment". I told the women I spoke with my children were unable to wear masks and I was rudely questioned why. A reminder to all parents, nothing scientific backs masking young children. You do not need to answer why, perhaps my children have trauma that prevents them from being masked? Perhaps they have special needs or speech issues. They are not at risk and they are not at risk of harming others. Forcing a child to restrict their oxygen intake is harmful however. I informed her, due to medical concerns we choose not to mask our children. I was told we could not be seen if we did not comply with masking our children. Refusing dental services based off children unable to wear a mask is discrimination. You may want to consider making your policies more inclusive to all your patients. read more

Also, I would have appreciated their honesty if they would have told me they were no longer contracted with my PPO. Instead, I was charged a cash price and told it was their new contracted fees. When I posted of a recommendation from a children's dental office besides Sugarbug dental after being treated very poorly. Their employees somehow saw it, which is understandable because it was posted on county discussions forum. Very unprofessional of them they knew exactly of what had happened earlier and mocked me online. After rescheduling with them because they cancelled my appointment was a huge mistake, before arriving i spoke on the phone with an employee and they said they would see me. their employees ask you to text once you have arrived during the pandemic, and i did, but did not get an answer, so i called them, then the phone just magically hangs up. I called again put on hold, then hangs up again, so i knock on the door just to be told i can't be seen because they didn't receive my message. So the employee asks me to see my personal phone to verify if a sent the message which in fact i did and i did show her. Just to be told you are 2 minutes too late we cannot help you. I said fine i wish they had told me sooner instead of waiting outside for about 30 minutes for nothing. If I wouldn't have knocked on the door they would have never even spoken to me and let me know my appointment was cancelled.But as soon as another car pulled up they swang the door right open for them. They offered to reschedule and someone would call me, but i declined. So unfair and treated very poorly. No professionalism what so ever. Also have pics of the employees mocking me online.
