Visited Sugar Restaurant around 3PM and the place looked really nice. It also wasn't crowded at that time which made it comfortable. The music selection was definitely a vibe with good R&B and Hip-Hop playing throughout the restaurant. The service wasn't terrible but could've been better. The staff didn't really check on us much to see if we needed anything. We had to ask for extra napkins and it would've been nice if they automatically brought extra plates in case couples wanted to try each other's food. They also had a baseball game on the TVs but the picture kept freezing. Now for the food, this was definitely the highlight. We originally ordered the Chicken Mofongo but they accidentally brought out the Beef Rib Mofongo instead, which actually cost more. We didn't complain and honestly I'm glad we didn't because it was really good. The beef was flavorful, tender, and literally falling right off the bone. We also had the Half Rack BBQ Baby Back Ribs with mashed potatoes and those were good too, tender meat and tasty mashed potatoes. The Crispy Chicken Donuts were different but surprisingly solid, and the sauce that came with them was really good. For drinks, we had a Piña Colada and margaritas. Both tasted good, but they definitely weren't strong enough to justify the $15 price tag. Overall, it wasn't a terrible experience, but probably not somewhere I'd return to. If you are bored and want to grab something to eat locally, this is a decent spot as long as you manage your expectation accordingly. My guys took me out for dinner on a Saturday evening a couple months ago. I didn't want to go too far so I elected for us to try Sugar. A reservation was made however, it wasn't clear that it was needed. We were seated quickly before the hostess realized we had one and then moved us. Here is where you must mange expectations, service was extremely slow. Even though our server was sweet, she seemed to be totally out of her element and this definitely hindered the experience. I don't know if it was age (she appeared to be older than the others), a language barrier (English was not her first language), or unfamiliarity with the menu and/or equipment. It could have been any combination of all of the above. We literally entered our own orders into her handheld a couple of times. The table next to us was seated after us, order and received their food & drinks (a couple of rounds) and was done and we were still waiting for our orders to be entered correctly. I kept it simple with a Jack and Ginger ale, she wasn't sure if they carried Jack. Thankfully they did, they seem to focus on pre-made frozen drinks and none of those appealed to me. We order wings, and I must admit the wings were a bomb 10/10. Seasoned well, crispy, yet juicy and cooked to perfection. I did the stuffed red snapper and the guys both did chicken breast one with white rice and the other with a house salad. The guys enjoyed the chicken breast and while I enjoyed the stuff part of my snapper the fish itself was a little dry and in much need of a sauce since it also lacked flavor. I requested a chimichurri-ish sauce to help carry the dish. As you enter the front is a little misleading as it seems to be the staff chill spot, but once you go up the stairs, the main dining area was cool with cute lighting and decent tunes playing. I went for a date night with my boyfriend and we liked the experience so much we booked it for my birthday dinner on last night. Our waiter Gabriel was so attentive and super nice even brought our cake and sang Happy Birthday with my friends and family. The food was amazing i had the Ocean Rice with extra shrimp and a couple of Sugar Signature Drinks. Avoid Sugar Restaurant: A Mother's Day Disaster I've been wanting to try Sugar for months, and I thought Mother's Day would be the perfect occasion to finally celebrate with my family. I couldn't have been more wrong. What should have been a special meal turned into a masterclass in terrible service and cold food. We actually started on a high note; we only waited about 10-15 minutes for a table. However, once seated, we were told the food would take 40 minutes. We decided to stay--big mistake. Our waitress was clearly overwhelmed with too many tables and basically disappeared. The real kicker? The manager. He asked how we were, we explained the disaster, he took our plates promising to return... and he never came back. As we were leaving, we saw him laughing at the bar. Totally unprofessional. The Food (or Lack Thereof) The kitchen timing was a total mess:My husband and two kids got their food, but mine didn't show up. When my plate finally arrived, it was stone cold. My husband's mashed potatoes and vegetables were also cold. The kids' meals were missing the garlic bread promised on the menu. They took our food back to "fix" it, but when my plate returned, it was still cold, and my husband's food never came back out at all. We ended up paying only for the kids' meals and leaving hungry. Bottom Line: This was a shitty Mother's Day dinner. To be ignored by the manager while he's hanging out at the bar is the ultimate slap in the face. We will never spend another dime here. Happy Hour margaritas were on point--super tasty and refreshing! The wing sauce had great flavor, but the wings themselves didn't have the best texture. I would've given this place 1 star if it hadn't been for the wonderful young lady who was outside the restaurant welcoming people (I think she was a hostess) with a warm smile. The place was very nice in the middle of the block. In the middle of the South Bronx. The food I was not a fan of, all the hype just didn't add up to me. The hype is about this chicken donut. We tried it and didn't like it. It leaves an after taste in your mouth. When you see the video, a guy takes a piece, and you see the mozzarella cheese. In this chicken donut, there is no ooze of cheese. Maybe I came on the wrong day, but it's a no-no for me and Brown. I asked for it to be taken off the bill, and we requested the 3 wings for $8.99. It's an okay place in terms of size & decor. The food- Lemon chicken, Mozzarella sticks, Fries, Mac & cheese, Wings and Sauces (we're a family who shares so I tried a bit of everything) ALL okay. The drinks are much better than the food. I would say Sugar can be an ideal stop for a drinks & appetizers kind of night if the following issues are addressed. My experience fell short because the place was fairly empty (Friday afternoon 2pm-ish) so our server was super laid back eating, chatting and missing at times. The biggest issue was the flies. As soon as our drinks and food arrived so did a hand full of flies and gnats which made for in uncomfortable experience as we feared them landing in our food & drinks. A few of us had leftovers but everyone refused to take a doggy bag home because due to the long wait in between the flies had likely made contact. I kindly bought this to the attention of our server who laughed it off. This is a new place that opened up in Southern Blvd. The location is definitely needed in the neighborhood. It brings the city vibes to the bronx. You don't have to travel far. The service was great, they make sure they are coming around to make sure you good. The food is okay too. The place wasn't too busy although there was a large party of maybe 15 celebrating a birthday. The ambience was great, really great vibe and I was super excited about trying the food. The hostess was fine, our waitress was great with getting our order and bringing our drinks. She took our order and we then that's when the problems began. about 40minutes went by without getting our food or hearing why it was taking so long. When we asked, they said that it was because we'd order our food well done, which we had not. We had order pulled pork sandwiches. The expectation is that pulled pork will be well done. We were told the food was coming shortly, but it didn't. We told the waitress we didn't want to eat there anymore and to just give it to us to go.
