Went to try those viral fruit shaped desserts, and they're actually pretty good. So good we went back a second time. They ARE pricy though so just be aware. So far Mango is the best flavor we tried. Banana was good but it is a little small. Strawberry was good. Passionfruit was too sour for us. Blueberry was good but not my mothers favorite. Raspberry was a little on the sour side as well. The man behind the counter was very friendly, if its your first time and you like sweets probably get the mango, banana, strawberry and blueberry. We didn't get the coconut because that also has passionfruit inside which was sour. Nor any of the more dense choco or PB flavor ones. read more

The infused ganache inside is missing flavor complexity, and the texture is too greasy; more like a pudding than a mousse or chocolate ganache. The crunchy coating has no value add for me; it seems more like a gimmick. I'd rather have no coating, but higher quality flavor. Be aware that on a hot day, you need to either eat it right away, or get it to your refrigerator super fast, before the coating melts. read more

Had a chance to finally try Sugar Bakery after seeing all the hoopla on instagram. I mean who doesnt want to try those viral crunchy desserts, bc I do! Glad we were in Santa Cruz so we got to try it out. This is a very cute pastry shop, small but very inviting. The service is fast here and there are a few seats inside to sit if needed. For the desserts, I tried the Mango and Pistachio. The mango was very yummy and tasted like a real mango, I loved that there was fresh chunks of mango inside! My favorite though was the Pistachio, if you like pistachio, you will LOVE this. It has a nice crunchy piece inside that I loved and the pistachio cream is spot on. I stopped by Sugar Bakery with my dad on our way up to Santa Cruz. After seeing videos online, I needed to partake in the crunchy fruit cup! I arrived around 1:30 PM on a Saturday and the line was about five people out the door. We were only in line for maybe 12 minutes before we were at the counter, they still had over 30 fruit cups in the display counter and might have been hiding more in the back. $35 and cold, the crunch on these were phenomenal. They nailed the flavor, I was worried things would taste artificial but everything was made with real ingredients- there were chunks of mango falling out of the center. There are a few tables inside. Phenomenal through and through. We had our share in the parking lot and put the rest in the cooler for the beach! read more

Okay, I broke down and had to try the viral crunchy desserts. I went around 12:30 and there were only 4 people ahead of me. They had all of the normal sized selection but had ran out of the minis. They said they made 75 mini cups and they all sold out in the first hour!! I didn't really know what to expect but they were really good. They no longer bake custom cakes. This surprised me just Well, since they state on their page that they make cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations... They took orders for cakes--or rather, you could place an order in advance. The service has become very meager. I get that the name is sugar bakery, but I think that there could've been a way to contrast the flavors better without it just being super sweet.The crunch inside of the coconut one was a good touch. Stumbled upon this bakery on the way from Big Sur to the bay area. The cookies I had here were the most delicious I've ever had in my whole life. I ate them when I got home and warmed them up in the oven and they tasted just as fresh. I was able to rescue two boxes of injured macarons and got a great deal on them! I shared them with friends and they were also super tasty. The girl that helped me at the counter was really kind and patient and explained all the flavors in the box to me, even helped write them down so I could remember for later. This bakery is located in the food court of Capitola Mall. The beautifully decorated macaroons is what initially drew us in. Once you approach the counter, you realize there are so much more choices than just macaroons. I think they change things up so not always the same things are offered. But the one constant I have seen so far are the many flavors of macaroons and the Ukrainian honey cake. I chatted with the owner and found out the honey cake is a traditional Ukrainian cake recipe passed down from his wife's grandmother. The cake is very subtly sweet, and layered with a light cream. It is so good that once you start you can't stop. I like that it's light and not too sweet. Over time, we have tried many of the macaroons. They are all very good, including the non-traditional flavors. They are perfectly crisp and flavorful. They last for a good couple of days if refrigerated. read more

Stopped by Ulta and took a quick walk through the mall to see if anything was actually open. Well this place was new and open so we stopped to see what they had. Picked up a 4 pack of macarons. The amount of filling in the macarons is nice, especially for the price. The fillings were decently flavored. I liked the chocolate on the best. The ganache was a little thinner and sweeter than what I'm used to but it was good. I would say their shells need some work as there wasn't much flavor and a couple shells were hollows. I went in about 3 weeks ago hoping to place an order for an upcoming event. I spoke to someone at length, gave them what I was interested in ordering, and was told someone would get back to me with a price, etc for macarons. I even purchased 4 flavors to try, and see how they held up over a week. The macarons were fantastic, flavors amazing, but I never heard back from anyone. Aside from the amazing goods, what sets this place apart is its story. Everyone that makes this place run had different lives before working regular jobs. During the pandemic when the owners were about to get married, their catering service cancelled on them. So they took over and catered their own wedding and realized, "hey we can do this". Left Message for owners and they were able to assist me in getting the special treats I needed for my daughter's college graduation celebration! They were French macarons! These rival any French bakery we visited while in Europe 4 years ago, and I would say we're even better with the flavors they offered. Two of my favorites are their strawberry and the coffee flavored macarons. If they haven't already, I'm hoping they add some more unusual flavors like lavender, rose, plum, passion fruit (a few of our favorites while in Europe), to their already wonderful selection.
