Left the civil rights museum and last minute got told about this place. I got the Suga Hot fried chicken. Sweet Jesus that chicken was amazing. For the sides I got the Mac and cheese and the cabbage. That Mac was very good when it came out hot. The cabbage flavor was great but probably a little soft for my liking. My boys got the wings and they said they were flavorful and crispy. My fiancé and I went to the Suga Shack because we heard about it from a relative who mentioned a specific radio personality had advocated for the eatery. Little did we know upon visiting the so-called establishment this Sunday afternoon that the service would be exceptionally poor. First, it took several minutes for the hostess to seat us (a party of two) when there were empty tables. Then once we were sitting, no one ever came to bring us a menu, offer to get us a beverage, etc. After almost fifteen minutes, I looked at my fiancé and said this is ridiculous, so let's leave. We walked out of the restaurant and the hostess who seated us looked up at me and said, "Have a nice day!" Wow! Nevertheless, I will tell everyone I know to never eat at this place again. On top of that, I noticed how unclean it looked. We went to another restaurant and were welcomed with open arms and with exceptional service. Food, atmosphere and music ---great but drinks are weak and they charge a 20% service charge where other places might charge 15%. Their Hennessy Margaritas taste like Whiskey Sours. I ordered a double Tito's with splash cranberry and it was brought to me in a shot glass and looked like mostly cranberry juice because they didn't have anymore glasses. They need more servers when they know they have a good crowd and you can't go to the bar to order. I was sent back to my table to wait on a server, then I had to wait. My wife found this place on Yelp as we were walking around Beale St. We were in town for the Beale Street Music Fest. It was around 4 pm. The restaurant was mostly empty. Great music was playing on the sound system. Not too loud at all. Service was fast and extremely friendly, but the star was the food. Absolutely spectacular. I had catfish with yams and fried okra and cornbread. I've been eating catfish since I was a kid and this was the best I'd ever had. The fried okra put any fried okra I've had anywhere else to shame and the yams were sinfully good. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The tartar sauce was also delicious. My wife also had the catfish with mac and cheese and potatoes. Everything was great. My 18 year old son got the Suga hot fried chicken. He never gets food like this. He loves fried chicken but never gets sauce on anything. He loved it. His girlfriend also got the fried chicken and said it was great. What a wonderful meal surrounded by nice people and great music. Let me first say, I think we just picked a really bad day to visit. Now got the review, all the fryers were down so we couldn't order most of the menu. We had reservations but we still ended up waiting about 20 minutes for a table but we didn't mind that much. Our waitress was really nice but was clearly overwhelmed with the amount of people and the issues. Oh and they didn't have several ingredients for the mixed drinks we wanted to order. Unfortunately, we did not get the opportunity to listen to the show although we arrived early as instructed by the representative that is over your facebook page. In the future, if your entire building space has been reserved please inform the customers immediately upon arrival or when an inquire. You don't know how far people are coming to experience your atmosphere. Do not wait until they have order food and begin to slick rushing them to pay to clear out. It feels like we were robbed of money and time that we can't get back because you all were not upfront about what was going on. We had to leave because there was no room. Everything was reserved. Although we arrived early as instructed, we had to give up our current seats only to be told after waiting for the show almost two hours because the advertisement said 6:30..not know the show doesn't really begin until 7:30 (per our waitress)...
