Not just a treasure trove, it could be considered a landmark. This place is so wonderful...I thought I was in heaven (largely due to the fact that I am a succulent NUT). What makes the place so great is that you will find succulents you've not seen before. We all appreciate unfamiliarity. You will find new at Succulent Gardens. I have been doing living walls and roofs for many years, this place is my candy store! A great selection and reasonably priced. There is also great inspiration here. My juices get going when I see people being creative with nature. If there is an artistic side of me this is it. I love the way nature can interact with decommissioned every day items and make beautiful art. There are a lot of niche areas here, so make sure you walk around the grounds. This place provides you with a lot of great ideas for the home project. Definitely make this an annual stop during my yearly Thanksgiving vacation. read more

Super well-stocked succulent paradise! Tip: Don't miss the Screen house. All the sedums and sempervivums are there. There's a very cute sitting area for photos. I always try to make it here when in I'm Monterey, the only thing I can complain about is that they close at 3 on Saturday and I can easily lose a good hour in there just looking through all their options. It's a huge warehouse/garden space with tons of succulents & cacti types, and in different pot sizes too so you can pick depending on your project/budget. They do occasionally get rarer specimens that they'll call out on their social media pages, or just trendier in the moment houseplants. For example, greenovia rose succulent, brain cactus (multicostatus), rarer euphorbias.. Their airplant section is pretty well stocked too, lots of airplant balls and cholla wood sections. Their pottery section with wooden planters is super cute and you can buy different types of dressing by the pound. Coolest part is the amount of arrangements they have around the place, the car, the chair, the walls to inspire your own ideas! read more

I'm just gonna throw this up there in the conversation for GOAT succulent farms. If you wanna @ me with another one, then by all means go ahead, because I'd love to visit that one. That said, Succulent Gardens's jersey is going to be hanging in the rafters one day. Like seriously, come on. You get out of your car or I guess like horse or whatever you were riding, and you're met with just like crazy succulents planted around the parking lot as decorations. Then you walk around and just see like houses and houses of crazy different succulents. Like all kinds. Pretty much every one you can imagine, and just rows and rows of them! It's such an amazing sight to see them all neatly packed in, and you have the tiny tots to the big boys. Succulents are super photogenic, and the ease of which you can snap some photos here adds to Succulent Garden's legacy. I mean, come on, you're not going to be taking pictures of succulents at Home Depot or Lowe's or something. While you may be able to get succulents a buck or two cheaper at a wholesaler, I just feel like the variety and care they have for succulents here is worth it. The choice isn't just between succulents; you can literally choose WITHIN a species of succulent. That way, when you choose the perfect one and it dies, it's probably your fault. I could spend the whole day here! So much variety and of course it's constantly changing as the seasons do. Succulents and cacti; big and small; indoor and outdoor... you'll definitely leave with a new plant. The staff is very friendly & knowledgeable and the place is dog friendly (leashed)! Everywhere is beautifully decorated with different displays and planters that you'll probably get inspiration the minute you drive in. You can also get materials to design your own stuff as well. It can get pretty hot and humid inside the greenhouses for the plants, so bring some extra water for you and your doggo if you plan to spend a while there... or even if you don't because you probably will accidentally anyways! Pretty fairly priced succulents and cacti per plant, but it's unfortunate they only sell wholesale to retailers and businesses (I assume landscapers). We visited here to see if we could order about 150-200 succulents for our wedding favors and the woman told us they don't do any kind of discount. The best place to go for landscape quality succulents or for a good selection to make that vertical garden you've been dreaming of. They are open to the public, plus they also provide stock to the Nursery trade. Every Year (September) they have their Succulent Extravaganza (maybe not during Covid) with tours of the facility and with interesting speakers. If you haven't been, but you are one of those gardeners who is smitten by the "succulent addiction", then you certainly must drive along the Coast on Highway One until you see the Power plant in Watsonville and you know you are getting close. If you have anytime left over, try to squeeze in a visit to Elkhorn Slough as well! read more

great succulent selection- TONS of cute little babies and huge established plants. Some good pots too, with drainage! I spent over an hour looking at all their plants. The only thing that could have been better was more identification on the plants- I don't know why but I'm obsessed by knowing exactly what variety I am buying ‍. However, I did send an ig message to ask for identification to succulent gardens and they responded and I love them for that. That shows me great customer service and I will definitely be back here!! My husband and I came here for our Anniversary present to each other. We are new succulent lovers and here about this place by looking on the internet. It was over whelming how big this place is, but exciting too. We were first greeted by a younger lady, seemed to be a college student and was helpful about showing us were we could go and questions we had about a few planets. After we were looking around inside for an hour we came back with a few more questions. We were not greater friendly by a brown hair lady and a older lady that sweep to maybe the owner. They were short with us when we asked questions. Rudely whispering about us. I almost left my $150 order and left in tears. But not wanted to make my husband upset. I will not be going back. I did have a amazing time looking at all the beautiful plants. The other staff we met on the grounds we smiling and kind as well. read more

The stars are for how well organized this place is and really cool potted arrangements but very expensive compared to Ortega nursery. I did however find some useful plants that keep rodents out of my yard. I'll be planting them after the rain so they can get established first before they get rained on. I'll definitely go back. Needed a variety for baby shower favors. Sold in 2 inch square pots we can wrap with burlap. Luckily they had a sale when we arrived- 20%off everything. With two green houses to choose from we were able to find 18 different varieties in various colors for party favors and centerpieces. Each normally priced at $3 each or can add up with how many varieties they have. I was specifically looking for string of hearts and senecio peregrinus. Both of which they did not have at the time but still did not leave disappointed. read more

My wife and I drove here from Monterey (a 30 min drive) because we heard the selection of succulents and cacti could not be beat. Although the selection of succulents was impressive, the prices were high and the selection of cacti was poor. I asked an employee if there were any large cacti elsewhere and he showed me into another greenhouse on the property (greenhouse 3) which was full of cacti. I spent over 30 min selecting the one I wanted only to have the cashier tell me that I wasn't allowed to buy cacti from that greenhouse (despite that fact that her employee had shown me inside it). The cashier also accused me of entering the warehouse without permission and proceeded to have an attitude with me, refusing to allow me to speak with the manager. I approached the manager about the situation and asked why I could not purchase the cactus. She stated she did not want to sell the cactus because she planned to chop it up and replant the arms. Even after I reminded her that she had at least 50 other similar plants in the greenhouse and that her employee had spent half and hour with me picking out the plant, the manager still refused the purchase. Meanwhile, my wife had selected probably $150 worth of succulents while I was cactus shopping, which we ended up not buying because of this incident. Overall, our visit cost my wife and I two hours of our day and cost the succulant garden over $200 in business... great management decision. If you're looking for succulents or cacti, just do yourself a favor and try home depot or lowes. The prices are cheaper and customer service much better. read more

A place entirely devoted to succulents and cacti? Um hell yes! This place was a dream. They have over 700 different kinds of succulents and an enormous property. I spent well over an hour here with my mom looking at all the different types of plants and displays. They offer workshops here too, to make your own display or terrariums. The prices are pretty average for the market, but not too pricey. I could have easily spent over $500 here though. There are just that many that you want to buy. It was a beautiful day, so that was an added bonus! Loved spending my afternoon here! read more

It was my first time at a succulent nursery, but they seemed to have a huge selection of succulents you could plant/pot, but also some pre-potted designs. They also sold vases/pots, frames, and like decorative gravel material. Even if you're not there to buy, it was still worth a visit because they had displays sprinkled throughout, so it almost felt like visiting a free botanical garden! read more

We were here today at a little before 2:30. The lady wasn't too friendly to people waiting to get in. She seemed to be insinuating that we arrived to close to closing time and shouldn't even bother coming in. We walked in and she was giving her same rude spiel to the lady behind us, poor woman came from Sacramento. I have no idea why they're only open till 3 lately. There's tons of ppl who want to shop. We waited probably 10-15 mins to get in. We've been here probably a dozen times over the last few years. So we walked around. Picked up 3 plants. Got to checkout and my husband wanted to get an aeonium from out front. I took our box of 3 plants and got in line. Told the lady that he wanted to get the aeonium and she was just said "whatever". They had a big sign about them being on sale for $15. He brings it in and they said it was a 5 gallon planter and was $50. So we said nevermind. She said it was just one row on sale. But their sign made no mention of it just being one row. It was a massive grouping of aeoniums so having the sign there really made it seem like it applied to all the aeoniums After we left we were both a little miffed at their rudeness. That "5 gallon" planter wasn't 5 gallons...so who knows. Planter was significantly smaller than a 5 gallon bucket. Likely we will shop elsewhere due to the straight up rudeness mostly, let's not split hairs here it was rude. After the vibe we got standing waiting to get in I was ready to bail. My husband had the same opinion by the time we left, especially with the aeonium sale sign issue. They seem to carry 80-90% of the same stuff most of the time. We probably have 200-300 varieties of succulents, maybe more. We shop around at a lot of nurseries in the South Bay Area, Monterey, and we've even gone up to SF to shop for succulents. So it's not like we don't know what we're talking about or looking at. read more

If you're a fan of those low-maintenance, low-water freaks of nature known as succulents, the Succulent Gardens growing grounds will look a lot like heaven to you. Aeonium, agave, aloe, crassula, dudleya, echeveria, euphorbia, ferocactus and probably the rest of the alphabet too stretch on for acres and acres, each plant as impeccably grown, potted and labeled as the next. Outside, the overcast coastal climate offers the perfect environment for the hardier species, while several huge greenhouses keep the more temperate specimens happy, in rows that seem miles long. I venture there is nothing the avid succulent collector could want for here. (One hint for the enthusiastic shopper: even if you think you're just coming for that cute, fuzzy little dudleya, consider wearing long pants and long sleeves and bringing gloves... it's almost impossible to resist some of the larger, more treacherous agaves, and their thorns are not at all forgiving.) Prices are typically per pot size (e.g. 4", 10", 5 gal.) rather than per species, and may seem steep (e.g. $40 for 10" pot) unless you recognize how much time and attention (i.e. money) it takes to grow a beautiful 2' tall agave. Besides, prices aren't out of line compared to what you'll find at your local garden center... and the variety and quality of these plants absolutely blows away anything you would find there. I only deduct one star because the staff are (a) too busy propagating and cultivating these gorgeous specimens to be out in the grounds helping lost souls like me, and (b) mostly non-English-speaking, which is to say I am mostly non-Spanish-speaking, which is my problem more than theirs. Nonetheless, there's nothing to keep you from wandering quite happily here and finding your own treasures, which will be dutifully written up once you track someone down. (If you want a more retail experience, there's always the Succulent Gardens shop in Carmel.) There's no street signage, just an addressed mailbox, and the driveway is behind you before you know it, so drive slowly up Elkhorn and be ready to swing a quick right on Amaral Rd. -- or make several U-turns -- to enter this very succulent paradise. read more

This place is very cool. If you love succulents, it's worth the trip down a few random roads in Castroville. It's a little more expensive than I would have expected (they must give wholesalers much better prices, because *these* prices weren't that much lower than the places they wholesale to). As other reviews have mentioned, I wish the plants were labelled a little better. All in all, though, this place rocks! Just walking around and seeing all the aeoniums and agave going crazy is super cool. We managed to spend under $100, but it was tough! Two things to bring on your pilgrimmage: 1. WATER! It gets unbelievably hot in the greenhouses. I didn't realize it at first, but after being in there for 30 or 40 min., I thought I was going to faint. 2. CASH! My family and I were here last weekend for an out of town fun trip and was excited to see this place. I specifically researched online nurseries where we can stop between Santa Cruz to Monterey. I begged them if we can have a detour and they agreed. I was ecstatic to see the massive warehouse. It's was amazing! I would've given a 5star rating and would recommend everyone to come but sadly when i was checking out, the older lady was not happy I had taken some plant name tags with my purchase. I didn't see any signs saying it's forbidden to get the plant name tags. Come on, it's only plants name tags! I even asked her to just remove it but she declined and says "never mind, for next time you know." There won't be a next time. I won't bother to come back. Some nurseries have plant name tags on every plant they sell and it's ok to take them. I would rather go to a smaller nursery but have a warm reception than a big warehouse with a rude treatment. I felt sad leaving. read more

Succulent heaven! So much to choose from. Not a lot of staff but just walking around can give you lots of inspiration. More tags to identify with care instructions would be helpful. The larger plants manage better and seem hardier. Three of my 2" plants didn't make it past 3 months although maybe Mission SF weather wasn't warm enough. read more
