I had Raymond as my instructor and passed on the first try! He was super patient, nice and explains everything in so much detail to make sure I understand the how and why behind each maneuver. He gives a lot of tips on not only how to pass the test but also be a safe and good driver. We practiced all of the routes in Redwood City multiple times just to make sure that I'm more than well prepared. He also likes drawing diagrams to explain things in the beginning to help me understand where to look when turning and where to look when parking/ pulling to the curb which was very helpful as well. Passed my first road test after taking 4 classes with instructor Sandy. Yay! (I have only driven in parking lot prior to this, and am very scared of driving.) I was expecting to drive around in the parking lot during the first lesson, but she took me to the residential area and the main road. I was scared but this actually helped easing the anxiety, realizing that driving is not as scary as I thought. I actually got excited about driving after the first class :P She taught me how to read traffic signs and how to handle various traffic situations. Horrible experience. The car was in bad shape, gear shift used to get stuck. The instructor was even more horrible, most of the times I had trouble understanding her english, she had a really thick asian accent and I couldn't understand what she was saying even after asking her to repeat several times and she seemed to lose patience with that. While driving also she was consistently commenting on things which made it hard to concentrate on driving and contradicted the rules herself. This one time she asked me to change lanes but didn't specify which lane, left or right and when I moved to the left she said lane change always means right, which sounds stupid to me. Well, my daughter passed her behind-the-wheel test on her first try with just a few minor errors, and I certainly should give some credit to Success Driving School for teaching her many of the rules of the road. However, because I didn't realize that she had to take a driving class before her permit was actually valid, I had already been teaching her for several weeks and had her driving on freeways and everything before she had her first class with Success. Anyways, our experience with Success Driving School was fine. The lessons took place during the peak of the Covid-19 surge in December and January, which made us a little nervous, but both student and instructor were masked the entire time with high-quality N95s, windows were open, temperature checks were done, and surfaces were sanitized. Because my daughter already knew her way around the car (I also taught her how to check fluids, jump start a dead battery, change a tire, and replace burned out bulbs), she required little actual instruction about how to make it move correctly on the road. Nevertheless, there were a few nuances of the road rules and other safe driving techniques that she learned from her instructor. The only problem that we encountered was that her teacher's command of English wasn't the best, but in the end it was fine. She had a very gentle approach and was polite and respectful, which was appreciated. Maybe if my kid had been more of a hot mess at the beginning it would have been different. read more

I recommend this driving school. I took 4 lessons with Raymond and 1 lesson with Ken. Each lesson is 2 hours long. They are always on time and pick you up from your house before the lesson and drop off afterwards. The rates are affordable for the area. The lady on the phone was also very nice while scheduling lessons. I mostly practiced freeway driving and parking. Raymond and Ken were patient and taught me good driving habits such as where to look, where to place your hands etc. They are also very knowledgable about the rules of the road. Never again! This driving school only serves a particular community!!! Ken the driver did teach much to my son and his car was very dirty and his behavior very unprofessional. The other yelp reviews are from his community that has praised him so he can get business. He charged me $130 for 70min of instruction. Took my first lesson at Success Driving School with Ken and did not learn anything useful. The drivers side seat belt was in poor condition and the car was messy. He wasted about 30-40 mins out of my 2 hour lesson just sitting in the car explaining driving techniques that didn't actually help improve my driving skills. In my personal opinion, it felt like he was trying to squeeze more lessons out of his students rather than having their best interest. He also made a pit stop at HIS own house DURING my lesson. NOT ACCEPTABLE AT ALL!!! The lesson was a waste of my time and money. Would not recommend taking lessons with Ken! read more

Tldr; Go for anyone except Ken. Note: This is not a hate message, I did pass my test on the first try itself. After reading a lot of the comments, I booked 2 sessions with Ken, and honestly it was the worst decision I made to have specifically requested for him. I should have just not said anything and gone with whoever they would have sent me otherwise. Ken is a horrible instructor. He completely destroyed any confidence I had. He kept saying things like "if you do this, you'll fail" repeatedly. Kept interrupting me during practice, telling me to do things I was going to do just a second later. For example, I know I need to turn off the indicator after a lane change, but as soon as I've gone into the new lane he'll tell me to turn off the indicator and say that I'll get points off for this for not changing the indicator. He'd tell me obvious things like to get on the break when the lights at the intersection are red, when I know that, and will be doing it in a couple seconds. Its like he doesn't really give you a chance to display your skills, and just assumes you don't have any. The first time, or even second time, you make a mistake or miss out on something, a good instructor would tell you what you leacked. He would "instruct" you, and tell you to do it next time. But Ken would tell you you would fail the test because you did not do this. When practicing something you're nervous about, he'll keep making comments and telling you how to do things right instead of letting you try it out and then tell you what to improve on. This just made me so nervous. He is also always so agitated and does not handle mistakes calmly. If anything sudden happens, you would expect the instructor to be prepared and handle the situation calmly, but no. I had issues with distance from the curb when backing, and he kept passing remarks about what I was doing wrong, so this one time out of confusion I hit the gas instead of the break, and he just shrieked and yelled at me. He would keep instructing me on every little step of complicated steps like pulling over + backing + merging back into traffic, that it just got me confused and made me feel like I didn't actually know what needed to be done. Ken also wasted a HUGE amount of time the first lesson just explaining everything on the handbook because I hadn't gone over it yet. He spent almost 40 minutes of the 2 hour lesson on that, and then at the end told me to go over the handbook as homework. What a waste of money that time was. He also seems to money-minded, and would ask me for the check the first thing as I got into the car. He kept correcting me on the freeway for not being close enough to the car in front of me. And then repeatedly telling me when to slow down or go faster. I don't understand the need for that, when you're not even tested for the freeway! Half the time it feels like he's either mocking you for things or being condescending or yelling, from the way he talks. He just has a horrible tone and way of speaking for an instructor. And his accent just makes it worse. I knew I was a fairly decent driver, but after my experiences with Ken, I was terrified of the test. Thankfully since he wasn't there during the test itself, so I had told myself that I just needed to be calm and think things through and follow things step by step, and I would be fine. I highly recommend this driving school. This is my first time driving car and had no prior experience. Ken was my instructor and he is very detail and technique oriented. He will tell you your mistakes without discouraging you. He will tell you when you are ready for your test. I cleared my behind the wheel test in first attempt only because of Frank. Took classes with Ken and Phuong. If you are rigid and clumsy as new driver better go with Ken he can correct you on the spot.
