Having never owned or driven a car and being in my mid-30s, I have always been apprehensive of driving and high speeds (read 30-40 mph). I called the driving school and opted for a 6 hr course (3x2hr sessions). Ray was my driving instructor. He is one of the best teachers I've had. He is patient, knowledgeable, punctual, and polite. Is it any wonder there are so many bad drivers on the roads these days? As an aviation instructor, I hold high standards. Unfortunately the DMV doesn't hold as high a standard as the FAA. One such standard that the FAA requires to get a pilot license is to be able to read, speak, and understand the English language. Communication is extremely important and there was a breakdown in communication with the woman I spoke with on the phone. When I explained that I need to schedule lessons around my child's school she went right into scheduling times during the day when school is in session. Perhaps she couldn't understand my thick American accent. read more

I wanted to learn driving from scratch, and one of my friend gave me sue's (Instructer in zip driving school) number. Sue taught me everything from scratch in 4 lessons. but also she suggested me to do more practise for behind the wheel test because sometimes I was doing mistakes and I am not ready for the test. So, I took her advice and I rented a car for practise from enterprise car rental. They have $10/day deals on weekend. She took me to various parts of Sunnyvale, El camino and Santa Clara on test day.Her rates are competitive and much cheaper than other schools around($90 per lesson and $400 for 5 lessons).Her english is perfect, very easy to understand, she picks you up and drops you off but you need to tell her early because she is very busy person around 5 to 6 days before. She was very patient with me, pointed out the mistakes I made, gave me a summary of my mistakes when I left, what I needed to work on. I kept making the same mistakes again and again and she pointed all of those out to me without getting frustrated. I was so comfortable to talk with her because she is very friendly person. I gave my test today at the Santa Clara DMV and In first attempt I passed with 3 small mistakes.(if you do more than 3 mistakes its automatically fail). Update in response to zip driving school: I wasn't your student and never said that either in my review. It was my wife's experience with your school, of which I was a spectator at every step that I detailed. You were not driving around for 20 mins as you said, but were simply waiting at the Starbucks which was at the other end of the apartments. The address and cross street was provided to you the night before and on the day as well not once but thrice, but you simply refused to drive over. If we hadn't had a toddler, we would have spared you the trouble and walked over. It was highly unprofessional of you to just wave and leave when you finally saw her standing. A common courtesy would call for you to stop and say that you are late and the class has to be cancelled. I don't think that's much to ask for. ---------------------------------------------------- Review: This is with regards to our interaction with Sue from The Zip driving school which is diametrically opposite to the ones mentioned here. I don't usually write reviews, but I felt the need to share this experience with the yelp community. I realize that a low rating would hamper a small business, however, even small businesses need to maintain a sense of decorum when it comes to interaction with their clients. Short version: Our experience with Sue, was unacceptable and I would have given 0 stars if I could. Highly unprofessional, with traits that are unbecoming of a teacher, like rudeness, yelling, screaming, constantly interrupting and utter disrespect for others, I am surprised this school has such great reviews. But, again, this is strictly our experience with Sue and not Ray, who seems to be shining in the reviews. Long version: It started with my wife getting her learners permit a few weeks back. I realized a good driving school would do a better job than me trying to teach her, and so the hunt began. After reading the amazing reviews about Zip driving school, we contacted Sue. She pointed out that there would be a 10$ overcharge for the pickup, which we agreed too.The meeting location and cross streets were informed via text the previous night and confirmed. From the outset, Sue came across as a bit brash over the phone, but we assumed it was the teacher in her (dealing with teenagers probably), making her behave that way. Disregarding that, we set up a 2hr driving lesson on 3/29(today) at 11.30am. Around 11.07, we got a text from Sue that she was on her way to pick up my wife. At 11:30, my wife messaged asking where she was, and at 11.32 she received another text that she's a minute away. My wife and myself were downstairs to wait for Sue from 11.25, so she wouldn't have to wait at all. We live in a large apartment community and had given exact location and street intersections for Sue to find us, as the main entrance is a good long block away. Sue texts again and says she's by the starbucks. We inform Sue that Starbucks is all the way on the other side, and it would be easier for her to drive a block to our intersection, rather than us walking there as we would probably miss each other. She called, and said you can't be inside the apartment for the pickup and you have to be outside. My wife explained that we were standing outside since 11.25 and gave the directions again and again. Sue just kept repeating and talking over her and would refuse to move from where she was. I was shocked to see such behavior exhibited by the same person, who's supposed to be an instructor. After a while, Sue drove over to the closest signal to us and saw her standing outside (I had to get back in for a meeting by now) and honked to get my wife's attention. Their eyes met and Sue just drove a block down on the opposite side. Tired of arguing, my wife started walking toward the car and Sue called. To quote her, "You can't even see? You are not even looking" in a highly condescending tone. My wife explained again that she was in fact walking towards her, at which point, Sue was yelling over and over. At this point, my wife pointed out the rudeness in her tone, despite the fact that my wife had been waiting at the same spot for 20 mins, where the meeting was supposed to happen. Apparently, Sue didn't like that and she hung up the phone. Next, she drove by and waved her hand. A few minutes later, she sent a text asking my wife to find another instructor. This was highly unprofessional and unacceptable behavior and I would recommend other yelpers to find better schools around. read more

I was thinking to take a class with Ray based on yelp reviews. When I called to this driving school, one lady picked up the call and she was too rude. I asked her very politely that I wanted to talk to Ray before scheduling any classes so that I can let him know my expectations. She raised her voice and told me that you can only talk to him once you take 2 hour lessons and asked why do you want to talk to Ray? Have you taken any classes before etc etc? I had to disconnect the call because she started shouting and then I had to tell her that she is being very rude and I am not going to take any classed from this school. Great driving school! I took the 5 course option for $500 and it was a great deal. It was 10 hours worth of training and I passed my driving exam on my first try. I did not even practice outside of this course. They prepared me really well and overall did a great job. I just passed my driving exam and I have to say it was because of Ray. I failed a few times and was starting to lose confidence that I would ever pass! Ray is very knowledgeable, patient and really takes the time to explain everything...and he knows his stuff! I really feel like I have become a better driver because of him. He even took time to come to the DMV on the test day to help me practice on his day off. If you want to pass the driving exam, do not waste time taking classes from anyone else but from Ray (I took classes from other schools and failed a few times but passed in one go with Ray). As I needed to get my driver license I had to find a good driving school but I had no idea where to go. I heard about zip driving school from a friend of mine. And she suggested to take some classes with them. I ended up taking 8 hours of driving time with them and my instructor. She is very nice and professional. She does not talk a lot ( like some others) however, she was quick enough to tell me my mistake and give me confidence. And with her help and teaching I was able to pass my first driving test.
