However Safeway continues to NOT provide its customers many advertised item discounts to customers unless the customer carefully checks the receipts after every visit. Most people don't realize how narrow profit margins are in the Supermarket business. IF a certain amount of customers think the sale discount was applied Safeway makes up for narrow margins because items are not keyed into the pricing program always in the favor of SAFEWAY ! Recently I contested a discount not provided at the Customer Service counter. A manager scolded me in an authoritative manner saying, " you need to tell the checker that you want to enter your phone number in order to get the discount " ! I reminded the manager a customer should NEVER be responsible to provide or direct a Safeway employee. That is store managements job. Some checkers ask you to enter your number, others don't say anything. Walmart and Food City are straight forward and old school. Safeway uses every marketing trick in the bag to get YOUR $.
