Ive only tried one sandwhich (Divine Love) FOUR times. That's how good it is. Im NOT a vegetarian but this is SO good. I do have to say there was one time the samdwhich was underseasoned and had sharp dried twigs from the yellow peppers. It's located on the bottom level of a surprisingly large and complicated strip mall in Santa Ana. When I came here, I actually parked really far away from the store itself because of how labyrinthine the strip mall's buildings are. I know the "sub" in subVegan refers to the fact that they're submarine sandwiches, but I'd also like to think that it refers to the layout and location of the interior, which feels like a hidden vegan basement safehouse in a world where vegans are persecuted for not eating meat. Get it? They're underground vegans? Otherwise, the "sub" only works one way, because what does it mean to be below vegan? I know some vegans are preachy and hated, but to call yourself a subvegan seems like too much--or like you're hating on vegans. I'm not a vegan, but I sometimes play one on Yelp. The kids who work here are nice. A little bit space-cadety, but friendly and vaguely helpful nonetheless. They also keep the place pretty clean, but maybe that's just because the vast majority of people take their sandwiches to go. It's really pleasant eating at the booths, which feel fun for some reason. The interior might make some people claustrophobic, but I really like it. The sandwiches themselves are 4.5 stars. I was really excited to try Sub Vegan but unfortunately the experience was frustrating. We originally thought they had a location in Garden Grove since their sign is still up, but it turns out that spot is actually Shane's Tamales now. After figuring that out, we drove to their Santa Ana location. When we arrived at 1 PM on a Thursday, they weren't open even though the hours listed said they should be. It's disappointing because vegan options are already limited in the area, and when spots aren't consistent, it makes it hard to support them. We ended up going to Ike's Love & Sandwiches instead -- they always have several vegan options and are reliable. Hopefully Sub Vegan can work on consistency because it would be great to have another solid vegan option in OC. read more

I am not kidding when I say that I love vegan food and have had some amazing meals, and some not so amazing meals. However, this place just served the best vegan sub that I have ever had.
