For fun, ask your nurse or healthcare professional at Elmhurst or anywhere else if they used to work at Rush, and they'll fill you in on the behind-the-scenes: VC capital all the way, decimating entire departments, centralizing in the name of "efficiency", cutting staff and paying badly (so they all leave and go work elsewhere.) I've been trying to get my name changed in my account since my divorce in January. After getting it changed everywhere else -- including the health insurance I was using! -- I was told Rush wouldn't change it until I brought in my corrected drivers license. (Even though the name they had in the system is no longer my legal name, and the insurance card they're using is corrected.) Finally, I bring that in to my appointment yesterday, the receiptionist in the office says she'll get it changed and it'll happen right away. Still hasn't happened today so I call the number that was in the notice that they couldn't process my insurance before the visit (because it's not correct because it's not in my name and new plan, which I can't change in the system because it doesn't match the name in the system.) This woman interrogates me as to whether the receptionist called medical records in front of me beause there's a "protocol" and the ID is in their system but "only that guy can change it." One guy. And because I didn't know, and told her, "I don't know what the receptionist did, it's not my job to know the protocol, can you just look into it and call me back?" she told me I "didn't want to work with her" and hung up on me. And then pretended she couldn't hear me when I called back. (I'm sure because my phone shows my number.) Add this to the monthly prescription filling madness that's overcomplicated by a "centralized" system where that person never checks the right file, and so I get denied all the time, and I have to call Rush central and wait on hold (because you can only message the office through myChart, which can take 72 hours to for them to get back to you.) You will be on hold forever and still not be any closer to an answer, but AGAIN they will tell you about a protocol they have to follow, which is different from the one they had to follow before. AND you can forget about going to Patient Relations, who yell at you and say you have to talk to your doctor when there are problems with billing charging you for two different procedures when only one procedure code was given on the referral form print-out -- which I confirmed over a year later with the Ultrasound Department head herself. (And mine wasn't the only one that was incorrectly printed.) But Billing will keep talking to you like you're an idiot who doesn't undestand how insurance works, rather than they have a paperwork "protocol" issue that the doctor can't solve. I am so glad I moved away from Oak Park, because the ambulance would have to take me there or to West Suburban, and both are routinely terrible in surprising ways. West Sub has been shut down for good reason. Rush just stays bad and keeps adding layers of hell to make sure you can never reach anyone who can fix your problem, and no one will ever be accountable for not doing their jobs. Ever. (Looking at Robin in Patient Relations for starters. Still haven't heard from that office about the medication errors, so I guess I'm in some "don't help her" file... or maybe that's a double-secret password protocol no one's told me about yet.) RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. IT'S PROFITS, NOT PEOPLE. NO ONE IS ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANYTHING. PS - Thurston, try checking the Patient Relations email, because calling gets you nowhere. The ICU staff on the 2nd floor were exceptional--kind, professional, and attentive. They consistently checked on us and treated both patients and family with care and respect during a very difficult time. However, after a few days, we were moved to the 3rd floor, and the experience changed significantly. During overnight hours--around 2 AM--the environment has been surprisingly loud. I heard staff using profanity, watching videos or news on their phones at high volume, and openly complaining about long shifts. I understand healthcare is demanding, but this is a hospital setting, and patients (and their families) can hear everything. My relative is here receiving end-of-life care, so I stay overnight. At one point, a nurse questioned my presence rather abruptly before knowing the situation. To her credit, she apologized once she understood, but in moments like these, a little more compassion upfront goes a long way. One of the nurse was rude and jist keep using profanity and stated this is who she is. Wow, Loyola use to have professional nursing staff, what happened? I also noticed interactions where staff spoke to patients in a very casual, sometimes inappropriate tone. Maybe I'm a bit old-fashioned, but professionalism matters--especially in a place where people are vulnerable, grieving, and trying to find peace. My takeaway: There is clearly a strong, compassionate team here--as seen in the ICU--but consistency matters. Professionalism, awareness, and respect should be maintained across all floors, especially during overnight hours. Hospitals should feel calm and supportive, not loud or chaotic. Patients and families deserve that--especially during life's most difficult moments. I will give a 4 star due to our first encounter here and the kindness nurses such as Nicole and Quand and Jordan. Very kind d and attentive. And I just heard 2 nurses use profanity to another nurse. I am sincerely flabbergasted that they speak like this so openly and there are patients present in their rooms. The level of unprofessionalism is amazing, and i am really saddened by this as this hospital was once top hospital. Being part of the joint commission will definitely reflect not only my review, but how I move forward. This is really upsetting me.

They blamed their new system as the reason for not contacting me, even though they could see the appointment on their end. They gave me an appointment for 20 minutes later at MacNeal. When I went to MacNeal, they told me that they should not have done that, since they did not have an available appointment that day. MacNeal did accommodate me, and they were very professional. They handled the situation very well. The staff in North Riverside were unapologetic, and this incident was totally unacceptable. They are not competent and poorly trained. I called Patient Relations, so hopefully this will not happen to anyone else. I'm very dissatisfied with how this situation was handled.
