Lets go Timbers

I am sure there are better stadiums. Better locations. Personally I love the Portland Stadium in the downtown location. What are the advantages to this location? Well there is plenty of parking all around the stadium. There seem to be lots expecting twice the amount of people that show up. I take this as a good thing because the crowd can exit just as quickly. The stadium is situated on a river. Three sides of it allow for parking lots and club meetings all around the stadium. Each club has its own location and plenty of room to meet and greet with fellow club members. The club we were in had multiple beer kegs flowing. Multiple food trucks serving hamburgers hot dogs and kielbasa. Too much to eat and drink The clubs all ring bells and let you know before the game starts. The seats are well spaced and allow for a little arm room. They have plenty of food selections inside with all kinds of gear stores. Prices are stadium inflated and are typical of modern stadiums. Most stuff is prepared and served wrapped in foil only the fries and the drinks being cooked and served there. It was a long awaited reunion with my brother and his team won. The visit alone made it a three star event regardless of anything else. The clean and friendly atmosphere inside and out put it at five stars. The food and the beer we enjoyed at the club event made it even better. À truly great event.

First time here and really enjoyed the game. This was the home opener and it was freezing. But that was okay. My husband and I were in section 108 and we were really close. I can't wait to go back for another game when its better weather. While walking to our seats there was a lot of food and drink vendors. I also really liked how they were selling not only shirts but hats ans scarfs for the game. Also I used the suite bathroom and it was really clean. I think they had about 4 stalls and 3 sinks. The reason I gave it 4 stars is becauae I didn't' like was the parking. It was $20 which is usually the norm but it was really dark and if I came by myself to meet up with friends I would not feel safe. Other than that everything was great. The walk from the parking lot to the stadium was about 5 minutes.

Really want to give this more stars but can't. The workers were very nice. Overall the stadium is also nice. Nice view with the river in the back. The trumark club was very nice. The restrooms were a total disaster. I went to 3 different men's restrooms from before the game started to after it was over. None of the paper towel dispensers had any towels in them. The floors were gross.

Very cool location and stadium. It isn't very big and is a perfect environment for a soccer game. There aren't a ton of box suites but every seat in the house is a good one. It is right on the water and so the wind can pick up from time to time. The one big negative is the parking is atrocious. There are no signs and the traffic in and out of the stadium is horrible. So much delay and it isn't even that big of a stadium. Needs more organization. The game was very enjoyable and I liked the set up. There were a lot of concession stands and all the amenities of a top class stadium. I would come back as long as they figure out the parking.

The Philadelphia Union soccer game was lively and a lot of fun to watch! There were lots of positives and negatives about the total experience. Talen Energy Stadium was easy to get to from I95. Once inside, the parking lot was hard to navigate. Employees sent us down a lane where many people including children were tailgating in the middle of the aisle. The employees could clearly see the people. We ended up in Parking lot C which we knew was a 10-15 minute walk to the stadium. What we didn't know was it was unpaved with big chunks of concrete. This was dangerous to both drive and walk on. The stadium is new and clean. It's a smaller stadium. The seats were typical stadium seats. Sight lines were good. The food also was typical. The servers at our event were very nice as were the other employees we came in contact with. We did have several issues trying to get to our event. We asked 6 people to direct us. One told us there wasn't an event even though I had the details and tickets. The rest had no idea where the location was. All were polite and nice. The event hosts weren't allowed to put up signs directing people. It took close over a 1/2 hour to find the event. By the time we arrived, we were frazzled! The experience here would be much better if staff knew logistics.

We went to the first Philadelphia Union game at the newly built soccer specific stadium, PPL park. The stadium is located right on the waterfront next to the Commodore Barry bridge. Getting to the stadium is very easy by car because you don't have to deal with Philly traffic if you're coming from the northern or western suburbs. The main mass transit option is to take the R2 to Chester, and then they have constant free shuttles going back forth from the train station. For those coming by car, the current parking situation is a challenge. A lot of good parking areas are taken up by the onramp construction. The parking near the stadium is all permit, and the pay lots nearby fill up quickly. We just parked on the street a few blocks away for free, with zero problems. The areas around the stadium are not very nice. That being said, I never felt unsafe walking to and from my car. The locals were friendly and most of them were selling water on a 95 degree day. The stadium is a fantastic configuration, because there is not a bad seat in the house. Every seat has a cupholder, and the seats were comfortable. The food and beer options are pretty good. We opted for Chickie and Pete's, and some Hoegarden pints. Crappy beer (Bud) is $7, and good beer like (Hoegarden, Victory, Stella) is $8. Beer sales stop after the 70th minute of the game. I was shocked how well the place was run considering this was the first event. As a former 76er season ticket holder, I'm use to dealing the absolutely idiotic concession sales people at the Wachovia center. The people at PPL park were quite friendly, and didn't have the attitude that I see at most Philly venues. The game itself was fantastic. Not only was the game extremely exciting, but the atmosphere was great. The Philly supporters section was amped up, and the Union came from behind to win 3-1. Considering 1/2 the sold out crowd already has Union gear on, you would have no idea this was an expansion team having it's first home game at their new stadium.

As a Major League Supporter of Major League Soccer, I'm proud to say that I have been to several of the league's soccer-specific stadiums: The Home Depot Center (L.A. Galaxy and Chivas USA), Pizza Hut Park (FC Dallas), Red Bull Arena (New York Red Bulls), Crew Stadium (Columbus Crew), Dick's Sporting Goods Park (Colorado Rapids), and now PPL Park, home of the Philadelphia Union. PPL Park is a cozy stadium (seats 18,500 for soccer) right on the bank of the Delaware River. The views were really beautiful, and even sitting at the top of the stands, one does not feel removed from the action. I was impressed by the variety of food options available. I ate a Philly cheesesteak (had to, right?), but there are also seasoned fries, half-pound hot dogs, chicken fingers, sausages, burgers, fish and chips, nachos, popcorn, and lots of other things to nibble on. Sure, prices are fairly high, but not any higher than if you visit any other stadium, really. My only real problem with PPL Park is that it is basically in the middle of nowhere. You have to have a car to get there, and even then there's really nothing in the area. There's certainly nothing within walking distance. Suburban stadiums have been popular in recent years, but I think those located in more populated areas (such as the newly-opened BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston) are likely to draw more fans and feel more connected to the community. But if you have access to a car, I highly recommend that you head out to PPL Park to see a Union game. Go MLS!

I wish that PPL were closer to public transit, and needs larger parking areas and wider access roads. PPL has beautiful sightlines as far as stadiums go, and over 65% of the seats are in view of the Delaware river. All of the seats can see the Commodore Barry. I intend to revisit for another game in section 129 which is at midfield so that I may experience a game from the "good" (expensive) seats. However, both times I have gone I stood behind the home goal in the Sons of Ben supporters section which costs around $25. One of the positives of the PPL experience is interacting with so many fellow soccer fans. The supporters are very vocal and their passion for the game, standing for the entire 90+ minutes, is worn right on their sleeves. When you're behind a goal you see half the game up at arm's length instead of all of the game from proverbial stone's throw length. (Don't throw a stone, literalists!) Some of the vendors at PPL are more than a little bit outrageous. PPL charges $8 for super dogs and $5 for regular dogs. The minimum outlay for a soccer shirt or hat is $20, and a foam finger will cost you seven or eight of your hard earned dollars. I felt that this particular item was over the top for a purchase that advertises for the home team (they could use the publicity), whereas the others were just typically overpriced. The stadium was built in Chester to support local business and employment. However, the stadium is only used about 19 days a year. I am really hoping PPL Park will in the near future be rented out for college soccer tournaments, Women's Professional Soccer, outdoor concerts, etc. in order to fulfill its founding mission of helping the local economy. I also hope the nearby shopping center eventually comes to pass, or maybe the union fan zone itch a restaurant. In the meantime, local residents of Chester still await fulfillment of the building initiative. This is all in all a fan friendly experience and a great place to spend latter part of a summer afternoon. 4 stars.

Maori All Blacks v. USA Eagles

I went and saw a rugby game this weekend (Maori All Blacks vs. USA Eagles). This was my first visit to PPL park, and I was very impressed. We were in the third row in the end zone and it only set us back $25! Really, the worst seats in this park are still pretty terrific seats (I suppose it pays sometimes to be a fan of a less popular sport). I had a pretzel, a beer and some hot chocolate. I appreciated that they had a wide selection of beer at the concession stands. The hot chocolate was pretty terrific as well. The prices were ridiculously high, but on par with other stadiums. The only thing that I didn't like about the park was getting in. It was a bit disorganized, getting to the ticket takers, and that disorganization slowed the "line" down to a crawl. Parking was surprisingly difficult. With the size of the park, I would have thought we'd have been able to get out of there pretty quickly, but I would say it was just as difficult as leaving an Eagles game.

I recently decided that over the course of my life, I must visit every MLS stadium. PPL is the third MLS stadium I have been to, and this is including seeing NE Revolution at Gilette Stadium, but I unfortunately have to admit that PPL is better than Toyota Park in Chicago. It is really a beautiful soccer stadium. The architecture is pretty cool looking. I felt the energy of the riled up game on September 11th, which had an awesome attendence of 18.000 people. We sat in section 133 which gives you an excellent diagonal view of the field, a panoramic view of industrial lights (which are really quite beautiful in large quantities) and on your right side, a truncated view of Commodore Barry Bridge, which is huge. While watching a Union game on FSC, and seeing the view from the other side of the field, I was really impressed at the decision to build the stadium right up against the river. Union may be the perfect name for the team, as well as the fans. They are diehard! I'm quite certain I saw more MLS jerseys than I have at any other game. The gift shop was huge and crowded after the game. We got lots of hell for wearing Chicago Fire attire to a Philadelphia Union, and to make it worse, we lost 1-0. Props to Philadelphia for setting up a great new expansion team, complete with great new stadium.

In 2020, the Union advanced to the semifinals of the MLS is Back Tournament. The Union finished with 47 points on the season with a 14-4-5 record during the pandemic-shortened 23-game season. Curtin has been head coach of the Union since June 2014. Recently, the latest gameday parking prices have been anywhere from $32 to $45 per game.
