Predatory sales tactics! Dealing with Kristian I was asked to put down a deposit to hold the vehicle. I declined twice as I was not 100%, but he kept persisting that I put down $1000 just to hold the car. At no point was it mentioned this is non refundable. People at the dealership are also impossible to get a hold of. Was put on long holds multiple times and told people would call me back who never did. 77 days (and counting) without our car... On July 8, we took our 2018 Subaru Crosstrek to Subaru City (SC from here on) to investigate what seemed to be a CVT transmission issue. The transmission seemed to be "slipping" to the point the car was undrivable. We chose Subaru City because there are only two Subaru dealers in Edmonton and we live north of the river. For weeks SC kept the car for tests and to establish whether the transmission problem would be eligible for Subaru's 160,000 km warranty. Our car has barely over 100,000 kms on it, and due to the **prolific** issues Subaru transmissions of this generation, Subaru chose to extend their original 5-year, 100,000 km to 8 years and 160,000 km. Good thing for us, right? Over the course of the first few weeks, updates from SC and their service department were few and far between. Coming from the Customer Support business myself, I have been taught that updates to customers should occur every 48 hours, regardless of progress on the issue. This is not a philosophy that SC follows. Every week, we would call SC service for an update. They would tell us things like "our warranty lady is away", "we are awaiting direction from head office", etc. Eventually, they swapped the transmission with one that came from Ontario. But apparently it didn't take. So, as the story goes, they tried another. Still not happy with the results, they suggested to us a carbon cleaning of the direct-injection valves. How this relates to transmissions? I don't know, but $1,500 for a problem that could cost $10k (or who knows) without warranty, ok, let's try it. So, we pay $1,500, they clean the valves. On August 21, 44 days after initial drop-off, we were told to pick up our car. We're told that for all of our troubles, SC is going to give us 15% off our bill. Ok, a nice gesture. But when we get to the desk to pay, we find out that additional service parts and fluids, etc. were not part of the initial subtotal, and would ultimately eat up the 15% discount we were given. And on top of that, a day after picking up the car, we start to feel the familiar slip of the CVT... So we call back to SC service. They are, of course, **shocked** to hear the car is not fixed. They tell us to arrange a ride with the shop foreman because they want to see this for themselves. We make an appointment and go to the SC service desk. As always, the service desk is a picture of chaos. The service department is always incredibly busy, no doubt dealing with all the CVT issues. We find the foreman and after 5 minutes of driving around it is agreed that the transmission continues to slip. So, on August 29 we take the car back in. It has been there ever since. I should say that SC has provided us with a rental car. After about a month (and only at our request), they first provided us with a car off their lot. But the very next day, they said they needed it back because they sold it. They gave us another car off their lot, but then needed that one back. Now we're driving a VW Tiguan rental. I am hoping to get our Crosstrek back before winter, as the heated seats, AWD and other features that drew us to the car in the first place are absent in the VW. This 2018 Crosstrek is my second Subaru. The first was a 2012 Impreza, which I loved. Up to this point, I have been a supporter of Subaru and last year convinced my parents to buy a new Outback. But after this experience with SC and Subaru corporate, I don't know how I can ever spend another dime with these people. The transmission issue is one thing. Car problems happen. But the ineptitude of the mechanics, the lack of communication, the unprofessional and inconvenienced service staff, the stall tactics of corporate and the ineffective process that has cost us nearly three months without our car is going to be on my mind for a long time. read more

Have been going to this dealership for 30+ years. I'm still driving the car I bought there 23 years ago with 485+K and they've done all the major servicing. The engine and transmission are still in good shape. When it comes to service and reliability, that record speaks for both the quality of the dealership's service department from 1990 to about 2022 and the vehicle. Five stars for that. EDIT 26 October 2024: In my opinion, the mechanics there are competent, but I have no respect for the current sales department management and don't think much of the current service department front end staff, some of whom seem to think the customer is now responsible for ordering their own parts. My partner was interested in purchasing a new Subaru. We thought things were going well; we test drove the models we were interested in, took the time to compare the specs, got an initial estimate of the vehicle's cost, made an appointment for a trade-in appraisal and returned the day after the appraisal. First warning: the sales department failed to communicate with the service department and the 9:00 appointment I made for the vehicle appraisal was basically cancelled, to be replaced with an estimate of the amount we "might" get and the promise that this wouldn't happen again. It was pretty much unnecessary because they have 15 years of service records on that vehicle and a walkaround and a drive through the parking lot should have sufficed, but whatever. My time is unimportant, apparently. We were in the middle of negotiations with a salesperson who had to seek an answer for almost every question we had from either the finance manager or the sales manager. We were actually going to make a purchase and went out to take a final look at the one available car. We were not sure on one issue, and that was the colour of the car. Not a big deal, except that when you're spending $50K on a new car, you can surely get what you want. Our alternatives were, apparently, take this one or wait months, and we've seen from other reviews that their promises of delivery five months in the future can evaporate. All we took was 15 minutes to have that conversation and were ready to buy. When we returned, the salesperson told us it had just been sold. We feel for her, as she did do her best to get us the information we needed. She lost a sale due to the unfair and dishonourable conduct of her sales and finance managers when they made the conscious decision not to notify us that there was someone else in the dealership interested in the same vehicle. One wouldn't look at me when I confronted them in the sales office, and the other said "Well, you told us you didn't like the colour, so what are we supposed to do?" Buddy, you knew what you were supposed to do; you were at the salesperson's desk when we asked for a few minutes and you said to go ahead, and you knew at the time that another deal was in process, of course. We surely had earned at least that level of respect because of our definite overall interest in the vehicle and the fact that we had done in excess of $150K sales and service business over the years. But thanks, Eric and Philip, you helped us dodge a bullet as post-sales service and trade-in valuation seems to be an issue identified by other one-star reviewers. Yes I had a bad experience at this dealership. I have waited a couple of weeks to post this review so I cooled off and don't say anything rash. In September 2024 I visited Subaru City with the hope of purchasing a new car. After some discussion I realized there were no 2024 models left and I would be purchasing a new 2025 model. I spent some time chatting and a mutually agreeable deal was worked out, I was ready to buy a car. With the options I wanted I was told the car would have to be ordered from the factory. The time line given was 4 to 6 months. I was fine with that. Both parties then signed a contract and I paid the deposit. I left happy thinking I would soon enough have a new vehicle. After 4 months had elapsed I phoned the sales person and asked if they had received any word on a delivery date. The answer was not yet. After 5 and after 6 months the process was repeated. There was still no word on the expectant car. We were about to leave for an extended holiday so I phoned again just before we left and was assured that if the car arrived when we were away it would not be sold and would be at the dealership when we returned. When we got home there was no message waiting informing me the car had arrived. So 8 months after ordering the car I phoned once more to see if there was any word on a proposed arrival date. This time I was set back a little. The word was they could not fulfil the order BUT if I came in they would see what they could do for me. A meeting was set and two days later I was sitting in the office expecting to have to take a car that was on site. Probably not to my spec but at least the model of the car I had ordered. The salesman disappeared to talk to the manager and he came back to me with a proposal that was $5000 more than the contract offer both parties had signed 8 months earlier. I explained that it was the dealership messed things up, I upheld my end of the bargain and they have to at least match the contract price but frankly I expected to have to pay less. The end of the story is I left with my deposit repaid. There was no interest added, a legal obligation when holding a deposit for any length of time. I'm not sure about this part but talking to another car salesperson I was told it is a bait and switch kind of game. First you are given a very good price, and then told the specific car would have to be ordered. Later you are informed the order cannot be fulfilled and the price has gone up so in order to get any car you will have to pay $5000 more. I will not cross the threshold of a company that treats it potential customers as described above. Not honouring a contract is very poor business practice. If you are intending to deal with Subaru City be very leery of what is proposed. Keep your head up and avoid the disappointment I have endured. read more

-Came in, was assured that the price of the vehicle I was looking at was the price I would pay, no hidden fees, no extras. I was OK with this. I had a bit of a time crunch, so I expressed this. I picked a vehicle, and was assured it may be ready by my leave date (end of Saturday). It was Friday. - I came in for 11:30, they said it would take an hour or so. It was actually 6 hours later when I left the dealer. I had brought a colleague with me, who was my ride, but every time he came to sit with me, the guy with papers would leave the room. They kept telling me they were negotiating with the guys in the back for having my vehicle to me "that day", even tho I kept saying the next morning was fine. It was like they were creating an artificial problem with timing. I was on the phone getting stuff insured for the next day, so I kept having to amend my insurance based on the updated information they kept dropping when I was on the phone. I was missing work calls and appointments like crazy, and every time Ideen would come back in the room with a new update on timing, I'd pass it off to my colleagues but none of them wanted to deal with me by the 4th or 5th time a timing update came. I missed out on a lot of time-sensitive work that day, and it's going to affect my performance. - Finally, the paper explaining my payments came. It was around 2:30-3:00PM when it was put in front of me, nearly 4 hours later from our original time frame. - Ideen kept telling my friend and others he was "showing me the options", but I was never told that the extra 16k of add-ons they he had hand picked for me were additional to the warranty coverage I was seeking. So they got all these 16k extras in on my final pricing whcih explained why my biweekly cost went up. I had literally 0 idea what I was looking at - not once did he say the things on the paper were options. Again, this added 16k of extra monies on my bill but I thought this was all standard comprehensive coverage warranty stuff. My colleague had left by that point, and work was furious with me, so I thought if I just signed whatever he had and left I could salvage those relationships. I should not have caved to the pressure to leave right away - that was my major mistake. I think they banked on me being exhausted and confused by the end of the process, and really got what they wanted out of me. - I was asked if I wanted to leave and come back, and said yes, but they didn't arrange a ride and when I went to the salesman they said was off and would drive me home, he changed his mind and kept me there for another hour and a half. - When everything was signed, I drove off the lot and went to see my colleague to see what I could fix that I missed that day - he handed me a stack of deadlines I'd missed, and I handed him the paperwork I signed. He took one glance at it and said: "I thought you only wanted skid plates, winter tires, and a roof rack? Why did you get all these extra add ons?" and I said, what do you mean "add ons"? That's the price for the warranty stuff - isn't that warranty work stuff? And he laughed and said 'you even took the life insurance'? And I said, 'What do you mean, "took" it? Isn't that standard with the coverage?" and he laughed again and said they put me in a room for 6 hours and separated us so I would be exhausted and sign anything they put in front of me to leave. I literally never saw it that way - I believed every single time when Ideen came into the room and said he was 'working hard' to get this thing set up for me and that was the reason he was out of the room so often talking with the guys in the shop, and that leaving on Saturday woldn't work for them I needed to leave with the vehicle today, etc - When I got home, my boyfriend said I wasn't stuck with it - he said I had 24 hours to go cancel the vehicle sale altogether, but too bad I drove 15 hours to get home, I could have just returned the vehicle the next morning. - Me, feeling completely taken advantage of and stupid by this point, tried calling the dealer to at least cancel the life insurance and all the other things, but they wouldn't pick up the phone, Ideen was out, the finance manager was out, I said give my information to whoever is dealing with sales and finance today and call me back, but they didn't. - - It is now Sunday, and they're open, so I'm going to keep calling to see if I can cancel any of this additional 16k of extra services they sold to me in bad faith, making me believe it's all part of the package, and hopefully I can figure out how to afford this thing. My boyfriend says if I need to go bankrupt at the end of the day to get out of this, he's probably seriously reconsidering some aspects of our shared finances... I feel really bad now, my relationship with my boyfriend, my clients, my work, my colleagues, all of this was seriously damaged by this visit and now my future finances look like they're ruined too read more

Recently purchased a used Honda Civic. The car was driven 200 km and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Took it to the dealership and then had to take the car to a Honda dealership because they couldn't fix the problem. Needless to say $5000 in additional damage that was not found on the AMVIC inspection prior to purchase. Communication has been absolutely horrendous and still has yet to be resolved. After speaking with the salesperson, service manager, and sales manager, nothing has been resolved. It has been 6 weeks since I purchased the vehicle and 4 weeks of nothing but headache since. Since we were looking for a specific family vehicle and there were few of these used on market, we settled for it anyway. We drove this vehicle 49 days from purchase date and less than 5000 km in our ownership when the transmission failed. I understand that it is buyer beware, but when I called to inquire about any help or compensation I was told by Praveen (**supposedly such a great salesman; obviously does not care) "I will look into this matter and get back to you." One of the parts personnel went way above and beyond to help me find an 18 year old OEM FOB. I love my Subaru Tribeca and it has been super reliable as we approach 300,000 km. We have always dealt with Subaru City for our service needs and have always ended up satisfied. The part we needed is now obsolete and it was only with a bit of hard work and digging through old parts bins, that the wonderful lady (name protected but she knows who she is :-) ) that a version of the old FOB was located. I doubt anyone else would have gone to so much trouble to help a customer in need. Congratulations Subaru City. You are a shining example of what a dealer should be. We recently had our subaru serviced here, and upon picking up the vehicle, noticed that the passenger door had a dent on it that wasn't there previously. Recently took Rhoda, my new Forester in for her first checkup, and she did well. So did Subaru City! Everyone was masked, and the checkin process, around 7:15 a.m., was fast and efficient. My office is only a few blocks away, and now that Covid is limiting the courtesy van, they call you an Uber for dropoff and pickup when your ride is ready. The Uber to take me to work pulled up just as we were finishing my checkin, when I'd expected to wait. No complaints. Subaru City is continuing to knock it out of the park as far as I'm concerned. From what I can read of the reviews here on their service department, it appears they've really tried to address those previous bad reviews and improve their service. read more

I hope my experience was a one off, because it was the worst experience I had ever had. the only good part about it was my salesman JJ! and he is the only reason i am giving a 2 star review at all Firstly, the sales experience was fantastic because of the salesman (I want to point out that he was the only reason I purchased the vehicle) everything after was absolute garbage. When I made the purchase and had almost all the paperwork signed for a 2024 Subaru Outback Limited XT they said that due to it not having its PTI (Post Trip Inspection) that i would have to wait a week to finalize and drive my car home, NO PROBLEM! throughout this week I kept in touch with both my salesman and the accountant, set up the transfer for my insurance, made sure i had everything associated with my trade in collected. I took a day off work to go and pick up my car on the proposed date, i arrived on the Saturday as planned and they send me to transfer my registration of my trade in (I live 3 hours away from the Dealership so my only means of getting back home) when I returned to the dealership I was then told that my car was not ready and in the body shop still getting transport damaged fix. At this point I couldn't drive my own car back because it had no insurance or registration at this point. They set me up in a rental (thank goodness) and gave me an oil change and some cash which was nice but overall still mad I took a day off work and no one told me it wouldn't be finished even with me talking with them throughout the week. My car was not ready for another week and a half, where I drove the rental, luckily I had another reason to go to the city on a Tuesday. I set up the appointment for 1200-1300 to pick up my vehicle, I was told at 12:15 "do you have anything else to do in the city, your car still isn't ready". The wife and I tried to find things to do for another 2.5 hours and finally when we arrived at the dealer at 3 it was just barely getting finished. i drove my car home and was mostly happy, ticked I got pushed back 3 time! A few days later I checked my credit card statement, noticing a charge on my card from the rental (dealership agreed to cover all costs of the vehicle rental when we got it) I immediately contacted my sales rep about it, he brought it forward and said they would deal with it. After a WEEK and a half hounding them they finally had a cheque written out for me to reimburse the cost. This was an unacceptable experience for picking up a vehicle that the pick up date costed me a day of work, the fuel of driving twice to get it, the lack of communication to me the buyer. I cannot recommend this with the experience I had to pick up my car. Again the only reason I purchased the vehicle was because of my Salesman and that I wanted this particular vehicle, but if I had known the PITA it would have been to get it, I would not have purchased it in the first place Thanks for reading read more

We brought a 2015 Outback in BC with only 69000 KM The car is in mint condition. To pass the inspection they claim the steering wheel is off center which it is NOT ! So that is $159.95 for a wheel alignment that doesn't need to be done. Then they say the stud bolts have to much grease on them and will cost $136.43 to clean off with a rag. And the rear wiper is torn. So that is a total of $295.00 worth of repairs that do not need to be done. Total FRAUD. They have you over a barrel with these kinds of inspections. If you don't get the fake repairs done they fail you. And you can't take it anywhere else. They know this so they stick it to you. read more

I took my car there to be fixed. After they fixed my fly wheel on my car they decided to do a compression test and found out I have a couple dead cylinders. AFTER THEY REPLACED that part ($4,500). Then I told them to put it all back together and kick it out the door due to being expensive to go any further. They DID NOT PUT ANYTHING BACK TOGETHER AND DID NOT TELL ME!! I had the worst experience in buying my Subaru Solterra from this dealership. To begin with, when I first bought it, no one brought it up that the range will drop to barely 200KM or less in Alberta's cold weather. Although I have been in negotiations with them for over a week due to living in Calgary, when I had the car it was at 65% charge which required me to stop twice on the way to Calgary for a charge. After having the car and reviewing the documents, I realized that they charged me for a block heater ( this is only applicable to gasoline powered car). Now, for the car itself, and having had it for over 5 months, the car is a complete joke. The range is never accurate ( it's more of a Guess-O-Meter) than a range. The car promises to charge from 20 to 80% in less than an hour; however, when it's 0 degrees C, it barely gets to 16KW on a 50KW, 150KW or even 350KW. Absolute Joke! When I called the dealership to try to sell it back to them, they offered a price 13K less in value than what I originally had it for (obviously because they know that this car is worthless) . DON'T buy the Solterra. When I made the switch to Subaru, I thought it was a reliable Make, but I realized I was mistaken. On a side note, all other EVs don't have a charge rate cap and can get to 150KW for most brands, while others get onwards from 300KW. The maximum charging rate I've seen on this car is 45KW in a good weather. read more

I walked into Subaru City and met John who proved to be more than just a car salesman, but also a genuinely nice person who helped me save some cash in places I wouldn't have even thought to look for. I was quite set on finding a Red 2010 Imprezza and he managed to find me the only one left in Western Canada! It was brought in for me and I picked it up the following week. Back in late July 2022 I order a 2023 cross trek - was told 4 to 6 months. Was reminded several times by text by the salesman that "it was coming". I get a call today (December 8th - 5 month mark) saying that "we have to put my car on order again" I'm like WTF? we ordered it in July!! He says "oh they have no more 2023 left so we have to order you in a new 2024 - will take another 2 to 3 months!" I'm flabbegasted! Now you're trying to sell me a 2024 and I have to wait another 3 months!! Also did the price go up on me??? "oh well that's the market today, blah, blah," I said "ya right - you probably just sold my 2023 car from under me for a higher price" - Of course full denial and they never would do such a thing. My first Subaru was purchased from another car dealer 5 years ago, and I was so impressed with how well it functioned and moved, especially during the harsh and icy Alberta winters, so I decided to trade it in and get another one. I walked into the dealership and was courteously greeted by Bill Wong, a soft-spoken and professional-looking gentleman. He asked if he could help me with something, and as I explained what I was looking for, he listened with interest and took notes. Today at 11:49 AM Humm...I would have to say that owning a Subaru has been one of the worst experiences of my life. I bought my car from Subaru 5 months ago with less than 50,000kms and it has broken down. I now have to spend 1000.00 to fix it and will be without a vehicle for 2 days. The service department and the dealerships in ability to see how ridiculous it is that I am going to be forking out this money so soon on repairs is atrocious. I would NOT ever recommend a Subaru to anyone...even their maintenance schedules are completely stupid - costing over 2000.00 a year replacing sensors and other stuff that should last a good portion of the cars life. My car is three years old and runs like one that is 6-7 years old. Maybe in the past Subarus were good, but I venture to say they be better left in the junk yard now with all other things junky and rusty! read more

We love our car, but the service department is terrible. One of the last service appointments we had cost just about $600, and they only had the car for 1.5 hours. They didn't really do anything to the car. If you're waiting for service, they don't give you an estimate of how long it's going to take, or how much the service is going to be. I don't think we would buy a Subaru again for this reason alone. read more

Just bought new cross trek from here. We had an excellent experience. We inquired online about a particular one and Greg Harrison promptly answered. We ended up purchasing. He was very helpful and very informative. Very professional from start. Service dept was great as well. They squeezed my vehicle in for winter tire placement. As well promptly sending guy out when I returned to have wheels retorqued Paula was terrific as well! Definitely ask for Greg H and Subaru city is the place to go. read more

I LOVE my SUBARU, I don't like Subaru City. I have had my Impreza for 2 years now and every time in needs to go to the dealer, I have to take it back for the same issue. I think the slogan should be we do it right the second or the third time while we take up more time out of your life. Excellent place to buy a car. I have bought two 2010 wrx's from Subaru City over the past year and our sales man Jim has been nothing short of fantastic. My first time buying from Jim I knew what I wanted and he provided all I asked for. No pushy sales tactics, hidden agendas or surprise costs. Just an honest man selling cars. Working with the finance department was also easy and pleasant. Again, no hidden costs or pushy sales, just nice people helping to get me into a nice car. My second buying experience there was virtually identical to the first and went just as smooth as the first time. The first car was written off in a flood and while my wife and I were carless, Jim offered to sell us his own personal car at a very reasonable price until we could find something for my wife. We ended up not needing to accept his generous offer but his willingness to help was nothing short of amazing. I can highly recommend Jim to deal with and look forward to buying my next subaru there next year. read more

Well, I'm from Yellowknife where car care is difficult at best to receive. I have a 2000 Forester and have in the past done well with service at Subaru City. This Summer however was a different story. I took my vehicle in for a thorough check and was told that I had a cracked head gasket ( this was replaced here in YK two years ago),and the struts were leaking but that they could wait till my travels were finished at the end of Aug. to repair. When I left the lot, there was a sound that was not right. I took it back in and the mechanics took it for a spin. They returned and told me the struts were completely shot and needed replacing right away.How they went from leaking to shot in an hour was kind of disconcerting. I had them replaced. When I was further south I needed a wheel bearing replaced ad I told the shop of the head gasket. They don't deal with that but suggested I get a second opinion. The price quited for the job was 3,000. I decided to have it done in the states where the cost was 1,800 at the most. The Subaru dealer/service there asked if the crack was internal or external. SC never told me. The shop in the states said they could do the job if it was needed. When I arrived they said they would look everything over. Something I had asked Subaru city to do. In the states they called, and told me that the head gasket was NOT cracked that the valve cover was leaking. As well there were many other little overlooked, but important things that needed attention. When I returned to Edmonton I called and spoke to the service manager. He was not apologetic for the oversights, rather he said it was a matter of "He said She said" and one shop seeing something another didn't. Frankly, the head gasket is either cracked or it isn't. The simple fact is that Subaru City Edmonton did a half assed check of my vehicle then tried to pass it off as no big deal. The misdiagnoses could have cost me my vehicle. I had four cracked boots, and a very old timing belt that they also missed even though the sheet they gave me with all they checked was all good. I will not take my vehicle there again and you shouldn't either, I was going to buy my next Forester from them not now. Flippant attitude, and compromised safety are not good practices. Subaru city/ Wentworth In Portland Oregon was professional, thorough and honest. All things that Edmonton should be. Shame on you Subaru City for somehow resting on your Laurels. Apex Specialized in Edmonton did my last oil change on my way home they are very good, excellent in fact. maybe Subaru City should learn from them. read more
